Note: I totally mis-spoke in this video. You don't need to have a college degree to qualify for and get a job as an Associate Governmental Program Analyst (AGPA). You simply need some combination of education (4 years) and experience (3 years). AND, experience can be substituted (year for year) for education. So, for one example, you could have 2 years of education (about 60 semester or 90 quarter hours) and 5 years experience and still qualify. And so on and so forth. Too many possible combinations of education and experience to name. I hope this clears this point up and is helpful! Coach Kent - out! ;-)
These videos are extremely helpful and informative. Thanks Kenn! I really appreciate all the useful videos, tips, and strategies. I am excited to begin my job search for a state position! I can't wait to update your channel when I secure a position!
I'm a former County Employee and had such a BAD experience with SacCounty and Placer County! I never thought I would lose my job overnight! There was no Reason given to me for dismisal. I had all good feedback in my training. I passed the Medi-Cal Test 84%. I'm now wanting to get on with the State but my Fear is that with me being a fomer County Employee, am I going to be "Black-listed" at the State? Am I just waisting my time? I'm also older, I thought there were Laws to protect a Public Servant from being abruptly Laid off? No Union Representation because I was only 4mo. with Placer County. No Attorney will tk my case, not sure why? I have filed a complaint with the EEOC. Thank for any help you can provide.
Okay, I will keep trying. No Employment Rights Attorney seems to want to take me case. Do you recommend I still try for the State Job, or am I just wasting time? Thank you so much. Your very Kind and Helpful to Other's. Much appreciated.
Hi Kent, thank you for your videos! Another retired state employee I took a training from recommended watching and I’m glad I did. I have public sector experience on the city level as an office specialist for the Fire Department and I have a degree in Hospitality. My favorite part of my current job is interacting with the community at public events. I would love to find a position with the state that allows me to help plan community / other events. I have used the search feature typing in “events” as the keyword and found some general results. I wanted to know if there is a specific position type that is geared towards community outreach?
@@MadisonNegrete-l6t , No specific Classification that I know of for Community Outreach. Sorry. Just search on keywords "Community Outreach" would be my suggestion.
If I see the job description shows Work Location: San Francisco County but also Telework: Telework ,does that mean I need to be onsite or it's remote job?
You need to read the posting VERY CAREFULLY. If it says 100% telework - then it's 100% telework. The San Francisco County is just the place that has the budget authority and ability to staff the position. Lots of jobs are a combination of telework and on-site work so carefully read to see it this might be the case. When it is, the expectation is that at least some part of the work - a day or two a week - would be done on-site. Hope this makes sense and helps! ;-)
As far as my own personal experience goes, all State of California jobs do require that the applicant has passed an exam for the applicable job classification.
Hi Kent, I’m applying out of State. I noticed for a Cali state telework job, it’s encouraged out-of-staters can be admitted to the interview, but it’s required to provide proof of residence in CA. Do you know what that process is like and suggestions?
My experience is that out-of-staters can apply, interview, and even get offered jobs with the State of California. But, to actually start the job (I think HR calls it the "appointment"), you'd have to actually have moved or have residence in California. I hope this makes sense and is helpful! ;-)
State residency is a general requirement. Each job comes with specific knowledge, skills, education and experience requirements. I hope this helps. Coach Kent - out! ;-)
I am a past state employee looking to get back into state job. Do state hiring managers discriminate against past state employees who had left for private sector and want to join back to the state?
Huy Huynh, thanks for the comment or question. Give me a chance to explain and/or be more clear. Each job classification has different requirements for degrees and experience. You need to carefully read the Class. Specs for the particular Classification you're interested in. For example, for Staff Services Analyst (one level below the AGPA classification I focus on for this series of videos), you can qualifify with only a Bachelors degree (Arts or Science). ABSOLUTELY NO WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. This is a really great classification to get started at "the State" for new grads. Or, for AGPA, the spec. calls for a degree and a minimum level of work experience (read the spec. but I believe it's a minimum of 2 or 3 years). For those without degrees, take heart. One of my Staff Services Manager III's (SSMIII) supervisors qualified for her job without a Bachelors degree. She qualified with a combination of education and work experience. In qualifying, you can substitute work experience for education on a 1-to-1 ratio. Of course, you need to read the class. specs. for each class interested in to know the details. Hope this helps! Coach Kent - out!!

I appreciate a former state employee sharing what they know about navigating the state hiring process. Looking forward to watching them all! Thanks!

Great content! I've never done an advanced search on the site because I didn't know how to go about it. Thanks for sharing!
Glad to assist!

Eric Korbly, Thanks for the positive feedback. Much appreciated! Coach Kent
Hey Ken, I found this video very helpful. Can you please give any insight to remote work/telework with the state?
You mean in an upcoming video or to you right now?
If you want to know right now, please email me at CaliJobCoach@outlook.com

Also, I have 60 college credits, not actual AA and 15yrs of Medi-Cal experience.
You definitely need to speak with an attorney as this is way out of my scope of practice. Good luck though!

When you click on the job it will reveal the exam.
