Why the 49ers offense is in good shape moving forward if Brock Purdy "lets it rip"

Against the Seahawks, Brock Purdy had an off game. Many people blamed Kyle Shanahan, the lack of separation by the wide receivers, or the offensive line. It's OK for all of these things to be true, but I explained what Purdy's issues were in the video.

The word is his shoulder was/is hurting and he CANT throw the deep ball. That would make sense.
In terms of "Predetermining a pass" isn't that just pre-snap processing. Most QBs do that to a certain extent and it allows them to know if they'll be hot or not and how much time they have in these cases. It also allows them to change plays up sometimes. I think that's a good thing. IMO, most of these routes are taking way too long to break compared to the pressure on thr QB. If he sits in there all the time, he'll be taking hits like Stafford all the time.
I counted 4 plays that Seattle defenders were in Purdy's face literally a second after the snap. 4. The reason Purdy scrambles so much is that he's got dude's chasing him right off the snap.
Stats sent me. Glad to be here. 🤙🏽
I agree, I think Feliciano is going to at least get a chance to start once he's fully ready to go, and Brendel would be my first choice for who to replace. If Feliciano can provide at least adequate-level center play, that would be a significant improvement. Aside from that, though, I just don't see who else we have that can provide any upgrades anywhere. Banks hasn't been great, but I don't think anybody believes Burford would be an improvement. As for RT, McKivitz is only a borderline starter at best, but Moore is hardly even a backup. My biggest disappointment with the offseason was that the Niners somehow couldn't find *anybody* (in either the draft or free agency) to be a better backup tackle.
Feliciano for Brendal and Burford for McKivitz. Banks has been solid for he most part and he’s playing injured. Brendal and McKivitz are the reason for all Oline issues and always have been.
I agree 👍. I want to know how well Moore would be at RT.
I was laughing on other post stating the line is not the issue 😅
Kyle Shanahan's greatest failure is his inability to change, to evolve, to grow. Nothing will change on the o line. Let it go.
Feliciano is a starter Brendel is a backup
Brock has no confidence in the protection. That’s why he has to run.
I’ve been saying this for over a year and a half. When a team looses two quarterbacks repeatedly the protection is the issue. Bank Brendel and McKivitz should have either retired or been waved three years ago.
Should Banks be replaced by Burford? I can't forget how Burford left Chris Jones unblocked in the Super Bowl, causing Brock to miss an open Aiyuk that would've won the game.
Open Jauan, but your point is well taken. OL depth is not exactly our strong suit, but I'm not sure if its ANY teams strong suit save for a few. OL play has gone so far down these last 10 years due to all the quick spread systems in college; these guys never even HAVE to block for 2 seconds anymore, they never learn that in college
Foerster keeps getting questioned by reporters about replacing Brendel and he keeps saying he's the best they have for the position. Foerster has to see the tape on Brendel, there's no coaching up a lack of strength and speed. Is it too late in the season to swap in Feliciano since the center also calls the protections on the line?
That part is what's bull shit. Why would you have someone other than the QB call protection on the line. He is supposed to be the General out there. Whoever is calling out protection is so bad at it. There are free runners coming at Brock even when they don't blitz. Kyle can't even call run pass options because when they do Brock gets smashed the second he turns back around.
3/5 of the line is sub-standard and Trent isn't in top form (his hold out hurt). With Kittle, they can cover up these deficiencies somewhat. Without George they're hopeless.
I disagree, Dominik Puni has surpassed Trent Williams on the OL. The numbers don't lie!!! Regarding Aaron Banks, he has a similar build to Trent Williams. I would like to try him at left tackle before giving up on him.
Thank you for raising your voices!! It’s been an issue at least since our protection scheme was exposed by Flores and Spags last year and now the players are performing below their level and not giving Brock time or confidence to throw. Appreciated the video. I wonder why Cosell basically said the issue is mainly Brock? Makes no sense, seems like he’s gaslighting for some reason.
Remember when Jon F took over for Burford last year? The team looked liked utterly different. A change needs to happen.
Desperately brendel is a huge liability he was the 42nd ranked center coming into this game.
@@terrythegnome2408and for people that don't know, that means that he's worse than some backups... Really wish they would have addressed the offensive line this past off-season.
Jennings was not that open at 12.30 😂
Sauber ran into the throwing lane and dragged his LB into the window. Conley wasn't open either. That MLB had too much depth. Even Purdy who's amazing at those layered passes wouldn't want to risk that pass, especially to Conley..going for the easy 7 yards to Juice is a great decision. Tbh, the one Purdy got wrong is the CMC pass.He forced that
@micahkiyimba8641 completely agree bro this guy was knit picking like crazy
Facts! People tout the Lions which is warranted, but the reason they are having the success they are having is because they have the best OLINE in the NFL. Goff is good, but he is playing out of his mind right now with a crazy online in front of him. The Niners staying pat with their Oline during the draft other than Puni, as well as previous years has culminated in this.
How come you only do our losses? Why didn't you Tampa last week when he threw for 353
Is it a coaching problem?
Your tabulations are consistent with my eye test. Get Feliciano in there.
I have no idea what the O-line coach has been watching when it comes to Brendel and Banks. Brendel, in particular, gets rag-dolled regularly by opposing tackles, as you noted. And he gets flagged because he has to clutch and grab.
Forrester is letting the coke get to his head.
I would put more blame on Brendal and McKivitz. They have to help them so much it’s holding the offense back
What nonsense are you talking about he was in the MVP talk when it really was CMC did he forget how to play football in a few months no he is just mid
You're sick in the head.
I honestly only saw line 2 misses by BP. The corner he didn't throw to Pearsall and the CMC INT. Otherwise, I don't see what else BP was supposed to do. He's creating throws that aren't there. He pauses the video and tells BP to throw and then when he plays it, WRs are running past the spots where the ball should go? You only throw to the top of routes not where they break
I'm not seeing a lot of play-action. I think it's messing up Purdy's reads and timing. Kyle decided at the start of the season, for whatever reason, that the Niners were going to use shotgun a lot more this year-- even with 7-step drops at times! Purdy was killing it last years with play action. Unclear why Kyle would walk away from what was working so well. As for the OL: PFF numbers say one thing, but the eye-test says something else. Even Trent has been subpar this, whiffing a lot. He's seemingly always nicked up. Banks has been truly awful. Brendel has been subpar. H's too lights, gets pushed around and seemingly gets flagged at the worst times. Feliciano -- who is experienced at center and has some 35-40 pounds more ballas--should take his spot. Puni has been pretty good. He's been the bright spot. McKivitz has been better than in prior years but is still below average IMO. Even juice has whiffed a lot and has lost a step. Purdy is aware of these short-comings and it has sped up his clock and given him happy feet.
Something is up with Purdy's arm and his confidence...he hasnt been pulling the trigger on a lot of those mid range throws....25+ yards he doesnt want to throw it....he's becoming a checkdown QB...
Earlier in the season he was getting criticized for not checking down enough.
what you aren’t abandoning the niners like all these people in all the comments that are so called “faithful”!!?? I have full FAITH we are going to beat the packers! and you doubters, why don’t you become eagles fans, your easiness to turn on your team aligns with those people lol
Call me crazy but didn’t Trey Lance have the same problems letting the ball rip??…looks awefully similar…those return routes are almost useless and Banks is on the struggle bus
You're still seriously trying to compare Brock and Lance? That ship has sailed a LONG time ago. Get over it. Pls
probably, u need really shifty, quick guys for those and I don't see those types running it (BA was good at it) ; have Cowing and Guerendo do 'em
season is over for the niners. no sign of improvements since week 1 plus guaranteed losses against the bills, lions, packers and probably AZ. 8 - 9 and missing the playoffs.
I *think* they find a way to beat the Packers and eventually sneak into the playoffs
22:41 this one is so rough for me 🤯. Great play design by Kyle
Deebo would have to be first read on that play and the ball would have to be thrown the millisecond he comes off 53s hip. 53 was all over that route and he’s already waiting to make a play on the throw even when KP is repeating “wide open” Best solution for that play is Deebo continues to work away from 53. Settling down in the middle of the field is what kept 53 in the play
Ya I get what you’re saying. Brock is just late getting to his second read. He breaks to throw initially and then by the time he comes back that window to Deebo is closed. Brock has not found a way to get Deebo the ball in tight windows. Oddly enough Jimmy G excelled at it.
@@jamesfoster2408 Deebo has extremely low target separation. Can’t agree that Brock doesn’t fit it in tight spaces for him. It’s usually what needs to be done to get him the ball I think 53 is ready to jump that route quicker than you guys think. Either way if Deebo just keeps working towards the sideline more 53 isn’t a factor at all
@ Deebo has always had low target separation though. You got to hit him between the numbers. Brock always throws it too high on the dig route or often too low on the crossers Deebo runs.
@@jamesfoster2408 Jimmy did the same. I just think Deebo isn’t as good and teams have also figured out that he can’t beat man. It’s tougher sledding for him these days Brock has hit him in tight windows all year
I think Brock can get rattled a little too easy. When things are working well, hes great. But when he gets hit hard or makes a bad throw, I think it challenges him mentally and he's not great at recovering. Like the BAL game, he threw 5 picks. You would think after the first 2 - that's it, be more careful, but I think with BP, he can't shake it off real well like Jimmy G. Every time JG threw a stupid pick - he would be solid for the remainder of the game. So in this game vs SEA, I think after that stupid pick, he probably wanted to be ULTRA safe by taking more check downs and running for yards instead of trying to throw in tight windows. Good on him to be more careful with the ball but at the same time, gotta hit those throws that are clearly open. Easier said than done right? But he really needs to improve at shaking it off after a mistake.
4 picks against Balt, but 3 of them were tips/arm hit while throwing. He was still hitting tight window throws downfield in that game even after all the tipped ints The biggest hit he ever took was his first play in his first start against the Bucs. Didn’t rattle him at all. I think he’s just overthinking this season. He’s never been rattled
@@kevinalan2028 I disagree. In the CLE game last year he got hammered and he played poorly the rest of the way. In the MIN game, he might have been concussed but he didn't play well and in the CIN game, he threw a pick near the goal line and he kinda struggled the rest of the way and in the BAL game, even tho those were tipped passes, its partly still on him for being predictable on his throws that allow a bat down. I think Brock does get rattled and he needs to improve on that.
@@bobbymira8234 I think you just chalk a bad game up to being rattled. It’s clear by watching him in both playoff runs that he doesn’t get rattled. Shanahan literally praised for not getting rattled in that Ravens game, but you still seem to think the struggles were due to rattle
@@kevinalan2028 I give him a lot of credit for those two playoff games, but he's lost 5 games this year and he's had opportunities to make things right. That last pass to Deebo vs SEA was off and that could have sealed the win. I like brock a lot but sometimes he shows why he was picked last in the draft. I don't think he has the mental make up to be an elite guy. Hes a trooper for sure. But when things start spiraling downward, I don't think he has the ability to overcome it consistently. Vs CLE last year, I was waiting for him to "snap" out of it and he never really did until the last drive that shoulda won us the game.
@@bobbymira82342 playoff games? Hes played in 6 playoff games including the sb and was never rattled in any I used to wait for Tom Brady to snap out of it back when he used to always lose to the dolphins. Instead he would show his weak mental make up and why he was a 6th round pick We can say these stupid things about any qb when they have a bad game
Thank you for calling out this junk narrative about separation of the targeted receiver only. Purdy been statistically showing up, but not executing at a high level when it’s really been counting. He’s seeing ghosts and he’s getting skidding. I don’t get it. Pull your head out Brock.
I believe it’s several reasons. He obviously doesn’t trust Sobert (ie the crossing route being almost ten yards deeper than it should have been), too many free rushers getting through and the long routes rarely being open. Kittle and JJ seem to be the only receivers who as good as they were last year. The rest seem slower and tire easier. Finally, I think DCs have gotten Kyle’s number. On the interception the closest linebacker was telling the DB the ball was coming to CMC before the snap. They need to shake it up some for sure.
Do wish you had covered some of the good plays at the end. Just because you were right when you said it seems worse with them all strung together
I think Brock is at times trying too hard not to turn the ball over. I think the training camp turnover stuff was maybe at the back of his mind and then the Chiefs game happened. And with each game growing in importance i think there are times where he's hesitant to throw downfield. It sounds weird because he forced it to Christian early in the game, but psychologically a short throw might seem safer, even when a guy is covered. If I were Kyle i'd tell him to forget about being cautious, because they need the offense to start putting up points. If being cautious isnt working, you might as well take some risks
He threw 3 INTs vs KC...he had to dial back some of the forcing stuff
Great job KP. Something changed with Purdy after the Baltimore game last year. He has been much more inconsistent since that game, not bad by any stretch, but not the same confident QB that he was going into that game. Is he afraid to let it rip because his arm isn't 100%?
For a QB who was one of the league leaders in throws over 20 yards before the bye and hasn't had an attempt of 20+ since the bye you would imagine so.
Great analysis. I think Purdy is being spooked by the sudden appearance of numerous free runners in recent games as DCs have spotted a flaw in Purdy's game. Rather than scanning the entire field, he's scrambling much too quickly and clearly doesn't trust some of his receivers to be where they should be and therefore can't make pre-emptive throws like he did to Aiyuk and Kittle.
How do you know what the reads are? Watched the QB school breakdown and JT did not see any of these issues you are mentioning. I will take the word of a former NFL QB.
Mostly just the coaches and players know the reads, but a lot of times you can tell what the reads are by which side of the QB starts on and goes left to right or starts right to left in his progressions. Kyle Posey is correct in that Brock missed a lot of opportunities. We usually have 5 or more explosives a game, and I think we only had like 1 in this one because Brock was off this game. Was not impressed with his accuracy and timing. A lot of QBs can make nice throws while scrambling. Brock didn't make any throws that I remember while scrambling, he just ran for yards. not ideal if he doesn't want to get hit.
I thought some of the receivers were well-covered, as well, in several of those plays. One problem with Deebo is that he doesn't run his routes at a consistent speed. I can see how that would impact timing and trust. Moreover, there is a certain amount of predictability in the play-calling. Opposing DBs seem to often be sitting on routes.
I have the playbook that tells you the name of the play and what the reads are. So I have the answers to the test. And it's a position that I've played and coached, just not in the NFL. And just because JT didn't mention them or talk about a specific play doesn't mean that they didn't happen. You're acting as if I'm attacking him. I'm highlighting the plays he's leaving on the field. It's not personal. Let's not act like the former players (not JT) on TV aren't often loud and wrong, either. The only time anybody ever says "I'll take the word of a former player" is when they don't agree with my assessment. It's never an issue when there are rave reviews about Purdy, which is generally the case in my videos.
You say Brock is predetermining his throws but you can see his helmet turn as he goes through each of his reads.
This video has a lot "open" non open throws. The pass he wanted Purdy to make to Conley is a low % layered pass to our WR5 when Juice gets an easy 8 yards? That makes no sense
In my opinion, just my opinion only, I feel like Brock is playing super safe this year because of the contract coming up at the end of the season, whatever he thinks is a risk or a window throw he won't rip it like how he did in the previous seasons, once again just my opinion
I partly blame Grant Cohn for the fixation on training camp interceptions. It happened in his 23 camp, too and that was a hell of a season.
Great work KP! It’s interesting how anticipation throws were Brock’s thing last year, and now he’s not doing it as much 😤
Not as much trust in the players available, I think. Aiyuk is the best at being on the same page
Looks like he already started his motion to Deebo before Sobert broke open. Would help to know the concept and the coaching points on this
Common denominator to success feed more Jennings
Been saying all year that purdy has not been doing what he was doing before like the throws he isn't hitting all of the them are not out of his skill set throws but the routine ones that we was used to him hitting
Thank you
Figure it out.
Literally half this is not 21 personnel.
I wish this video was about how well the center and right tackle are playing. They really need to upgrade both positions.
