The Legend of "Tate's Hell" is enduring folklore from the Florida panhandle. My father told the story to me when I was 10 years old. There are multiple versions of the story of Cebe Tate. All versions agree that Cebe's last words were: "My name is Cebe Tate and I've just come through hell."

มุมมอง 542ปีที่แล้ว
The "Starliner" was the first roller coaster in Florida. It was also the first ride on site at Miracle Strip Amusement Park. Starliner was a wooden roller coaster designed by John Allen of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1963. Miracle Strip Amusement Park closed in 2004. The Starliner was moved to Cypress Gardens in 2007. In 2008, it was dismantled and placed in storage.

Lee Koplin was born in the mid-west. In 1932 he worked in the concrete and steel of Hoover Dam. In 1942, he was managing a failing mini-golf course in Guerneville, CA. His wife suggested he create some fanciful sculpture on their course. After sculpting steel snakes and dinosaurs, Koplin encased his works of art in concrete. Lee Koplin's creations were as durable as they were popular. The origi...

Going to the Beach 100 Years Ago

This is a video that I created for the Bay County Historical Society. A century ago, there was a brisk business in ferrying tourists to the Gulf of Mexico via St. Andrew Bay. After the Hathaway Bridge was constructed in 1929, that business model came to an abrupt end.

Before a bridge building program in 1929, the was no automobile access to the gulf beaches in Bay County. Tourists that wanted to swim in the Gulf of Mexico had to take motor launches to "Land's End"-today's Shell Island. The snow-white sands and sparkling emerald water have not lost their appeal.

The hang out was the mecca for teens as far away as Ohio and Michigan and every southern teen listened to what was on the juke boxes there for an entire decade of the 1960s. In 1971 a hurricane destroyed this place.

My gosh. Burning your feet off because your flip flops broke, going to Alvins to buy a new float, bringing extra batteries for our boom boxes, the Miracle Strip Amusement Park, putt putt and go carts, and a refreshing dip in the pool at The Admiral Inn! We stayed there every Summer for YEARS! There was a Micky D's across the street. But my favorite place was on the beach. I've gotten so many sunburns but didn't care. We were kids/teens and nothing else mattered back then. Lord, let me remember those days of happiness. 💯🙏👍

I was born and raised in Panama City. It would be easier to tell you where I DIDN'T live in Bay County. The footage of the entrance at night, with its glowing orbs. My parents would save up and take my sister and I once each summer. I still remember the absolute THRILL I would feel as I looked up at that sign while walking to the gates. The sound of the bumper cars to the left of the entrance. You could hear the bell of the High Striker game and, of course, the smell of cotton candy, Carmel and candy apples, burgers and fries. The sound of the carousel. Above it all, the click clack of the.roller coaster. The looper. We.called it the bullet, but my wife(from up north) calls it the salt and pepper shaker. Just as apt to make pee your pants as it was to make.you throw up. The Music Express, the Spider, the Log Flume, Wave Swinger, the Dungeon, the Abominable Snowman. All of these rides run by 16 year olds...lol Yes, as I got older, I was one of them. For 2 years, first year, when I worked the roller coaster, the "Beach Needle" was across the street. The next year, it was an empty space.

I went several times in the mid to late eighties with my buddies. Rudy a local there that worked on the beach renting chairs and taking people out on his sailboat for hire. He was cool enough and took me and my buddy out on his catamaran sailboat we had no money he just wanted to give us a little treat. Almost 40 years later and it is still the only time I have been on a sail boat. Thank Rudy, I wonder what ever happened to him. He was very tan with very blond hair. Does anyone know him? Also late at night we could see a boat anchored all the time way out offshore, me and 3 buddies hijacked one of those tricycle pedal boats and we pedaled all the way out there to that boat for some crazy reason we got kinda close and the man inside came out with a gun and threatened to shoot us we turned and pedaled back as fast as we could. On the way back in it was my turn to be in the water at the back kicking and pushing, because there was only room for 2 at a time. I was scared to death of a shark biting my legs off it was dark and quite a ways out. This was very close to the Top of the Guld and La Vela.

My parents were on their honey moon in March 1978 when Jim (King) Barnett broke the Guinness book of records for riding a roller coaster the most consecutive times. He rode the Starliner for an entire week. They sat behind him at some point when he was doing this. They told me he had a pillow and a blanket with him and slept on it lol. He later returned in 1980 and rode it 15 consecutive days.

Hello Dear, I've already checked out your TH-cam channel and reviewed the all videos. Your content is excellent and very enjoyable, but I noticed that your video SEO (search tag optimization) are relatively low. This could be a significant issue as it might be affecting the visibility of your videos, leading to fewer views, likes, comments, and subscribers. Effective video uploading plays a crucial role in SEO. TH-cam channels require proper SEO and promotion for optimal growth. If you're interested, I can prepare a report on the progress of your channel. I am waiting for your response. . Thank you.

I remember it being next to Goofy Golf and watching the people ride it. The hang out and the little places along Thomas drive. Nothing stays the same long. After that it's all changed so much, Petticoat Junction amusement park, then the Miracle Strip amusement park, now the water park. It's not the same an that's a shame. Mexico beach is nice now, like pc beach was, nice and quiet. 😅😊

Thank you for sharing this video! With the information you provided I took a little mental trip back in time and realized that I may have been one of the last people to see the sky-buckets strung up on the cables in their original form before they were damaged by the hurricane. One of my first vivid memories of Panama City Beach was when I was seven years old. I had been picked up early from school in Central Alabama on the Friday before Labor Day in 1975 and we headed to PCB. We got there about an hour or so before sunset and I will never forget riding along highway 98 and passing hundreds of billboards, Miracle Strip, Goofy Golf and the old Genie with the sky ride behind, still standing and the buckets strung off into the distance. It was a beautiful sunset with the clouds off toward the north which appeared black as they were rain clouds and the backdrop of the colorful buckets against that dark grey sky is something that I will never forget. We stayed for labor day weekend at the Trade Winds Motel just a few steps from all of this and walked past the sky ride several times on our way to and from the attractions. I do not remember if the ride was functioning then or not but it seems like every time I saw them they were not moving but I do seem to remember my brother and sister wanting to ride in them and being told that they couldn’t for some reason or another so they may have still been in operation. We left on the Labor Day Monday to return home and Hurricane Eloise would come through a few weeks after that. Although at the age of seven I did not keep up with any news or events I did remember the hurricane and the aftermath all the way up into Alabama and heard on the news that it was bad in PCB and hearing my dad wonder what all it had done to the things that we saw just a few weeks back. I never saw the Sky-ride standing again on any other trips (and there were many) but do remember the roller poles that held up the cables but no buckets in sight on my next trip there which was in '76. Fond memories and again, thanks for the video and glad to see that there are still some remnants of the ride if one knows where to look.
