I am currently rebuilding my 1975 ex national grid 406 and am having difficulty referencing a colour code/ details for the particular shade of green that you have used. Any info would be greatly appreciated . Apologies if you have previously covered this in a video that I have yet to view. Many Thanks - Tony.

    Always nice to have the "Banane" on a Unimog and a second one with perfectly good spares. In some weird twisted way the chain driven relocating gearbox wasn't too far off. The really old 401s and some 411s also had a really simple chain drive one. Open, with no guard, fixed to the holes in the frame end left and right with a bar going to both sides just below the tow hitch. It had the secondary purpose of stiffening the tow hitch for higher tung weights. Early 421 already had the relocation box shaped like yours but smaller and still chain driven on the inside. So whoever built it was on the right track but not there yet. The chain also shouldn't really have to be that tight to function per design. But the chain was probably too weak to transmit the power spikes. If I remember correctly the chain gearboxes on the Mogs had double row chains. The wear on your sprocket probably didn't help. One thing I noticed: your rear cross member seems to be thinkered with? Looked to me like there was weld on the bottom corner, which should just be bend? The additional plate around the hitch and the hole for the PTO seems also a bit weird? It looks like someone tried to beef it up, which surprises me as it's already rated to pull 13+t at full speed (which it will never reach). The banana gearbox is important if you need your pro center for like a muck spreader. But if you just want it lower, to do your cardans a favour, there is a little hack. You can just mount the bearing block of the PTO below the cross member on the same holes. You only have to take an additional look at how far your axle can travel and maybe limit that. But I see quite some people doing that. I also saw somebody mount the PTO bearing block below the axle on the rod where the lower links mount to. Not just that it costs ground clearance, but it must be hell for your joints.

    • @Classicworkingvehicles
      @Classicworkingvehicles 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The chain drive wasn't a bad set up in some ways, but I wanted to fit a tow hitch so I needed to make room for that with the centraliser gearbox 🙂. Yes the rear crossmember has been modified and plated - not sure why as there is no obvious damage to the original! This did mean the holes that should have already been there for the mount were plated over though - so that's the reason for having to align things with the bottle jack etc and drill new holes. It was one of those jobs that was meant to be an afternoon, but turned into days of work spread over several months! 😁

    Hi, as far as I understood it the 411 never came with double rams from the factory. They always had the single cylinder version. Well, that is not completely right. The early 411 with only pneumatics had two air cylinders for the 3 point linkage, but as far as the hydraulics are concerned. Similarly early 421s with the 40 and 45hp also came with the single cylinder version from factory. Another difference seems to be the big mount for the lower links. The early 421 really shared an identical frame with the late 411. However, the 411 was only available with the F gearbox and the F axles , whilst the 421 switched to the G versions in the late 60, still on the U40 and U45. Another difference seems to be, that the later 421 have two holes for the big mount for the lower links and the early 421/411 usually seem to have just one. However, that's all just how they came from the factory. As you described it, everything fits everything so everybody fittet whatever they had or wanted over the years, no matter original or from another model. I heard it can get tight on the 411/early 421 with the double cylinders and a PTO. But it still fits and you'll probably cross that bridge when you get there. When you limit the axle travel you could also mount the PTO below the rear crossbeam, maybe already mitigating the need for the additional gearbox.

    • @Classicworkingvehicles
      @Classicworkingvehicles ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comments. Yes it’s interesting how both the 421 and 411 evolved over their production life and how they seemed to converged in some ways. I suspect you’re right about the 411 having only a single lift hydraulic cylinder from the factory - although the mechanical convergence with the 421 seemed to accelerated towards the final years of the 411 so I do wonder… The same kit is offered for both models and having two lift cylinders seems to only really have advantages in practice, although I take note of what you say about fitting the PTO. Time will tell I guess!
