Montgomery 17 Sailboat Tour (SOLD)
มุมมอง 80K13 ปีที่แล้ว
Here is a tour of the boat I have been sailing since 2006. It's a fantastic boat that is stable, quick, roomy, solid and well made. I've had a lot of fun sailing on local lakes and occasionally, down along the Texas Gulf Coast. I did make one trip to the Florida Keys that was the trip of a lifetime, from Marathon to Key West in five days. The boat is great for camping out, and can comfortably s...
Montgomery 17 Sailboat - Late Evening Sail

Late evening sail on Lake Somerville..... Beautiful night. Raymarine ST1000 in charge at the helm. The only boat on the lake that evening. Two reefs in the main, full 110% jib.
Montgomery 17 Sailboat Bimini Part 1
มุมมอง 9K14 ปีที่แล้ว
Sailing without shade on a sailboat gets old after a while. I've thought about the placement of a bimini for sometime on this boat. The mainsheet in the middle of the cockpit makes it difficult to have a bimini for shade, as well as considering the jib lines and split backstay. This is the best compromise I can come up with without moving the mainsheet to the back of the boom and attaching it t...
Sunfish Sailboat Dolly... Homemade Part 5 of 5
มุมมอง 13K15 ปีที่แล้ว
Here I am at Rockport Beach on Aransas Bay. The dolly worked great and had fun sailing. Add anti-slip material to the bunks to keep the boat from sliding around on the dolly. Als, use straps to secure the boat to the dolly or it will slide off if you go over any curbs or mounds. If you can find bigger wheels/tires that won't be so heavy that you strain your back lifting it in/out of the back of...

See part 1 for comments. The comments about it being "rough" in Hawk Channel are from my own perspective and experience level!
Montgomery 17 Sailing in the Florida Keys 2009 Part 1
มุมมอง 8K15 ปีที่แล้ว
I took a few weeks to take a trip I'd been planning for some time. Towed the M17 from San Antonio TX to the Keys. Not a bad road trip. Towed with a V6 Chevy Silverado short-bed. Put in at Long Key, Seabird Marina, took my time sailing, and anchoring out along the way, down the island chain. Finally made the trip down to Key West via Hawk Channel. I don't have a whole lot of sailing experience a...
Montgomery 17 Sailing on Corpus Christi Bay part 2
มุมมอง 4.1K15 ปีที่แล้ว
A friend and I having fun on a downwind run from (starting out at...) Rockport Tx to Corpus for an overnight stay at the city marina. 2-3 foot waves, an occasional 4. Irregular wave pattern with a short wave period (CHOPPY). We had a blast!
Montgomery 17 Sailing on Corpus Christi Bay Part 1
มุมมอง 6K15 ปีที่แล้ว
A friend and I sailed from Aransas Bay (Rockport Tx) to Corpus Christi, then back to Rpt the next day. Some motoring against the prevailing SE winds but a great run from Port Aransas to Corpus, a beam reach to downwind sailing. I'm fairly new to sailing at the coast so the choppy Corpus Christi Bay (fairly large, plenty of room for the wind to build up waves) was "rough" for me. The waves weren...
Sunfish Sailboat Dolly...Homemade Part 4 of 5
มุมมอง 36K15 ปีที่แล้ว
Part 4 on How to build a Sunfish Dolly. Part 5 will be added in a few days when I get back from the coast! Thoughts on tire size: Diameter is more important than width. (as long as the width isn't TOO narrow!) When pulling the boat/dolly across very loose sand, a tire of small diameter sinks into the sand a little bit, so the tire is trying constantly go forward and "up" over this "wave" of san...

Very nice, I will be putting one on mine soon
George, Thank You for taking time to share your Bimini install & tips. I realize your video is now 12 years old (but still very useful). I sail Montgomery 17 #410 and I'm looking for ways to add shade. My M17 does have the split backstay tensioner and a stern rail. Both seem like a challenge for adding a Bimini. Just wanted to take a moment and ask you - since making these videos do you have any other thoughts or information to share regarding? How well did the Taylor Made Bimini hold up? Thank You and Greetings from N. Idaho
We have a Sunflower sailboat really like your plan!
Did you ever get a replacement? What do you think of this mower?
Where do you put the dolly when trailering the Sunfish?
Your 44 inch steel is what I'm referring to
Your 5/8 Axel? Where did you get that? What material is it? Man I had a hard time finding something that worked
What did this boat sell for?
I'm building one today for my Butterfly sailboat. I have a bunch of aluminum tubing I was going to use. Mine will be a slightly different style than yours. The cradle strap will be looser so the boat will sink closer to the frame. The frame will look like a T with a handle at the front of the boat. I am hoping to walk the boat back into the water like with a trailer. I then could do the reverse when loading the boat. I enjoyed watching your video! Happy sailing!
Found this vid looking for butterfly dolly info. How did yours turn out?
*_this machine is awesome !>>>_**_t.co/4tylI32Rfl_**_ I could not believe how sharp this thing can turn. it mows good, it's comfortable, and very quiet. I think it will stand the test of time. It is very well made._*
Just bought a Monty 17'. I have a Monty 15 already. I will decide which I want to sell soon.

Which did you go with?

Wheeleez wheels they are most suited for the beach which is over $100 per wheel. as lawn tractor front tires are adequate and cost less as they should do the job and not dig a ditch in the sand. if in the water i would recommend a stainless steel axle. the lawn tractor tires the universal replacements come with 5/8 and 3/4 bushings as most tractors have 3/4 spindles. the wheeleez wheels the 16.5 X 7.9 wheel they come in either 3/4 or 1 inch axle sizes as im building a wheelbarrow for next year's beach trip and the Wheeleez wheels two of them will be used. the others will use the lawn tractor tires the 15 X 6 -6 tire size.
Had you tried the Wheeleez wheels they are lightweight the ones close to your wheels from wheeleez is 16.5 X7.9 as its a low pressure balloon wheel which will flatten the sand as you are using regular lawn tractor turf tires which i think is OK. but Sandhopper the electric beachwagon maker don't reccomend turf tires for sand. but if u lower the tire pressure it will work like the Wheeleez wheels do as the lawn tractor wheels are an alternative and are lower priced then the wheeleez wheels. as i would use a alunimum or stainless steel axle if this to be used in salt water enviroments like most beaches. as i believe these lawntractor wheels can fit the Wheeleez canoe and Kayak carts if u get the ones that has the solid tuff tires on it these wheels will work if u have a 3/4 in bore. as these lawn tractor replacement wheels come with either 5/8 and 3/4 axle adapters which are ment to fit most lawn tractor front spindles or the axle of a tow behind dump cart or sprayer that are towed behind a standard residential lawn tractor. these wheels are also ideal for dual wheel conversions on most standard wheelbarrows. its not just lawn tractors like your video there is other applications using these wheels or the wheeleez wheel using your own imagination.
nice job now this is a real one that can go threw more then grass thx lol
Overall good videos although would have liked to see more details on actual measurements and construction. Last vid stopped before water. Are you rolling into the water and the wood is getting wet each time or sliding off to sand first? Our sunfish is really heavy so the load/unload part would be difficult.
great explanations thanks for sharing
Great concept! I will construct one for me canoe. Thanks for sharing.
auto pilot and bimini , nice to watch your boat sail itself ,,,,,,,,,,,for a little bit.
i bought one and the reel bracket that is attached to the rear roller would fall off. Not made for yards with tree roots. I noticed that yours has plastic parts. That must suck. Otherwise, cuts great.
A custom Bimini for $137? Where did you get it?
You are a brilliant man. You built this for less than $20 and I am sure it is available commercially for $200 or more. Thanks a for sharing your well made videos.
I wonder what you can tell me about your auto pilot. Did you like it ? Was it expensive? Easy to INstall thanks Richard
Nice job man, thanks. Very helpful. Have a '80 Laser with no trailer and moving it around is getting trying. Appreciate it!
Just a few months ago i made the same design using your video, it works great for my Sunfish sailboat, thank you for the help ....
I am curious to know the reason you had for selling the boat, as I am thinking about buying one for the first time. Did you get tire of it or are you getting one bigger? Please let me know. Thanks.
I want to purchase a montgomery 17 and am impressed with your video. Excellent job. I realize yours is sold but wonder if you would consider talking to me about some questions I have about a 17. My email is richard.wayne.evans4433@gmail.com Thank you Richard
Given that the width of the block will cause it to extend back at least two inches from the tang position on the boom, if you do not move your bimini further back than mentioned the forward end of it will chafe against the mainsheet as well as the mainsheet chafeing against the front rod of the bimini. Bimini's are a must in Texas and worth every penny.
Wow nice sailboat!
do you plan on sailing solo or with company often? I find the smaller the sailboat; the more often you sail. I have a Renken 18, and I sail 4 times as much as all the 20+ footers I see at the docks...and I don't have slip fees?!
What a beautiful day
can you help me out? what would be better choice for someone with no experinmce? 23ft or 17footer?
nice boat young fellow. stay small and enjoy. smart. Extra battery is the way to go and second small solar. My first boat was simple and that was the most fun boat I ever owned. I have had three. Current one is 46 feet. There is a message here.
Hey man!! I appreciate your videos. I have a Mirage 24. I always thought it was too small for a Bimini and Autopilot. You proved it can be done. I am also planning on trailering down to the Keys. Thanks Again!!
how did you connect the boards? nails, bolts, screws? And did you buy galvanized iron pipe? How has the pipe held up to the weight of the sailboat? I'm asking these questions because i'm also building a dolly for my sailboat, and want to know if you, with the benefit of hindsight, would change anything you did to make the dolly better. Thanks!
Another informative video. I don't know that much about sailing and see where you said you started sailing in 2006. After you initial investments and now that you are set up, what is your biggest expense when you go sailing? Thanks for all the great info. Sparkie Waller Quinton, Alabama
This was a very good video. I learned a lot about sail boats. It looks like you've got it all the bases covered. I did have one question about the battery. Is there some way the battery is charged wen you are out on the water? I have trouble with my RV batter running down when not in use. All the best...
Well I made it through good vid and very desctiptive, didnot like those ugly screws sticking down inder the deck and the painting or fiberglass mess thereabots though...
oooh it has a stern and bow light.
sweet
What a wonderful little boat
Nice to plan a trip and then take it. I would imagine that the Florida Keys would be a great sailing ground. Will be looking for some more of you vids.
Very nice for it's size
Hi! Could you advice me on that accessorie you have to secure the rudder in a fixed position? Designation and makers? Thanks H
not so easy though to get it on the dolly on the beach like it is from the trailer to the dolly. Also, how's that wood holding up after a couple years? I'm guessing you need some better bracing.
WE sold several of the Montgomery 17's.Rick Montgomery got a very good lapstrake hull design. Incredible room inside for a seventeen footer. Ideal for coastal waters.
way to go...us Monty guys gotta stick together!! Sean M23 "Dauntless" M17 Flushdeck "Sneakers"
They're the best sailboats in the world, george! With a few mods you could sail it 'round the world!!
water is beautiful - see you are reefed too - I reef (and sometimes double reef), early as I am a wuss in my little boat.
