For years, I had been shooting medium format and small format cameras. I was introduced to 4x5, 8x10, and larger format cameras when I got a job at a reproduction studio where I was hired to make large format images of original flat and 3-D artwork. My introduction to large format cameras inspired me to make a variety of 4x5 and 8x10 inch sheet film pinhole cameras. Eventually, I purchased my own 4x5 inch press camera and normal lens. I now own and use a 4x5 inch Calumet monorail view camera with 47/65/90/135mm lenses and about a dozen 4x5 inch film holders. I also use a 120 roll film back on my 4x5 camera.

I inherited a Linhof technika 4 and LOVE it. I’m lucky in that the camera needed little elbow grease to get running. I have been collecting different parts for it to widen its use n the field. Glade to see your channel, keep up the good work. L/S

While you present good info for the most part, you are not correct about vibration. Carbon fiber is much better absorbing vibration than aluminum. That's mostly why we buy them.

Those Majestic tripoids in the back are so necessary for big cameras. I have had one for 40 years first for my big wood B&J 8x10 and now my Calumet C-1 8x10.

Recently found your videos. You are clearly very knowledgeable and I like the straight talking approach. People could learn a lot from you. I love large format photography, makes you really consider the image. I have used one for nearly 20 years and consider myself experienced but nowhere near expert.

one observation the majestic head socket, this also imatates the manfrotto, the 400 geared head, this plug is the top plate for that system, specifically for these large camera systems.

also a tip, the tripod heads from manfrotto are a later version, an early one, with longer slender handles is called the 029 same plate, etc, just the handles are different and you probably find these at studio sales, as this is old pro gear.

Great tips! I like your no bull style. Like you, I've been shooting since late sixties. I sometimes use my cloth as a camera wrap on my field cameras when packing. Less space taken up in pack And extra padding/protectection for the camera. I like the tube type clothes until I have to loupe focus..... Keep up the good work.

Well, solid advice. No pun intended. I like the Mole Richardson (hot light, anyway if not a Mole. 2000 watts?)in the background next to the large format enlarger--5x7? In one studio where I cut my photo-teeth, we used a Majestic with our 8x10 Deardorfs on location until we got a Saltzman. Now there's a tripod. Bloody thing weighed about 30#. Maybe more. In studio, we always used a studio stand. Now I'm just using a Bogen 3036 w/ a 3047 head with my Sinar Norma. Works OK. And of course, if needed, I can always sandbag it.

If you’re short on cash, and have access to an air compressor, I find that GENTLY blowing out your light traps is a helpful tip to keeping your money in your pocket, and other holders available at $5-7/ea for other to enjoy and use. For those of us using larger formats like 5x7, 8x10 or larger, maintaining film holders is really the best option, seeing their much higher price. A couple gentle puffs of clean, dry air from a compressor help to clean out dust that has accumulated in the light traps, and in the grooves where the dark slides run. I use a little bit of hard paste wax on the slides as well, right on the outer edges that make contact with the grooves. Very smooth. Replacing hinge tape is quite simple, and using a high quality self-adhesive BOOKBINDING tape(not gaffers tape) to replace the hinges works remarkably well, and I find I get around 10-15yrs of service from them (this is based on holders I repaired in 2007/2008 still going strong).

I always found that baby powder helped greatly to lubricate sticky dark slides

if you're too lazy to spend the literal minute it takes to fix a sticky dark slide or retape a hinge, give your old holders away to someone who isn't.

That’s all well and good. But if I’m gonna walk a few miles I do not want one of those. I love my carbon fiber simply because of weight. My pack loads out at 35-45lbs, camera lenses, filters, Grafmatics.

Excellent point. There are all these noobs on TH-cam trying to teach large format photography and many have half a clue what they're doing. For example focusing a view camera correctly. There are mountains of old books that have deep knowledge of film photography in them which ought to be preserved. The current fad in film photography online is ridiculous and unnecessary pushing of film. Many think that this is artistic expression and will make their images stand out somehow, rather than actually focusing on creating a good picture. Most good photography comes from studying other images and really challenging your own creativity.

Also for those complaining about carrying equipment, you're unfit! Even old men should be able to carry heavy stuff. Unfit and unhealthy, low testosterone, inflammation ridden and poor self expectations. Get Off the screen, dump the junk food, exercise and make photos you love.

The other moronic thing you see often is people extending the center column fully and not the legs. Basic physics people! Then they tell stories of how their camera got smashed out on the wilderness.

The film is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy overpriced and digital can now achieve the same look 90%, save your money and get off the old skool film bandwagon and save cash. I was going 4x5 and film till i realized how much film , paper, chemicals cost, for what ? whats the point. There is now software that simulates film that looks so real and inkjet papers that look so dam real.

Great video! You know, the old Sinar F (for 'Field'!) is a very overlooked camera - lots of bits, lots of interchangeability, weighs a ton, but can compact down onto the 6" rail for travelling and they're built like trucks. I prefer carrying my Wista these days, but the old F and I took some decent photos.
