Setesdal Sweater Tutorial // How to Steek and Attach Sleeves & Collar

Hello friends! 🤗 This is my first ever "tutorial" but since it was my first *EVER* time steeking a garment, it's kind of more like a walk through vlog. Each step isn't explained in a lot of depth, my intention was more to give a broad overview for intermediate to advanced knitters who will be familiar with the techniques used and are only needing to see how each is implemented step by step. Did you block the pieces before you startet measuring the sleeve? 🥹 Going to work on a steeked sweater, and I’m so terrified, but your tutorial is so good! Thank you ❤
@@nannaschjdt8174 I didn't block the pieces before I measured them 😊 But, with that said, the yarn I used didn't change much pre and post blocking (which makes life very easy). Good luck with your sweater! You've totally got this - it definitely feels very scary the first time that you do it but it's SO much fun and a lot less intimidating than it might seem! 💐💞
That was a fantastic tutorial, but also rather terrifying. I am not sure I am brave enough for this. 😂
@@puppydood it definitely looks scarier than it actually is - you could absolutely tackle this! Especially if you use non-superwash 100% wool yarn, the stitches aren't that interested in unraveling which makes the entire process SO much easier 💞
Excellent!
Hello :) Nice podcast thanks a lot for sharing! I also am struggling with the gauge in Gudrun Johnston patterns 😭😭 but I’m not motivated as you are in doing all this maths😅
@@knitemall I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone with the gauge issue! 😭 haha fair enough about wanting to avoid all the extra math... another option would be to size down several needle sizes until you hit a gauge that works. Although I'm not sure if knitting several gauge swatches is all that much more fun than doing math 🤣
@@acornknits ahaha exactly! And also, I quite like airy and drapy fabric.. so not a fan of going down a lot of needle sizes! But one day for sure I’ll motivate myself for the maths ❤️ 🧮 now thanks to your video I know it’s possible 🙌
@@knitemall yes you can absolutely do it! 🎉💃🍀
I’ve never attempted a yoke because I don’t believe it will fit my shoulders… I’d love someone to explain the fit issues with yokes.
@@VeeZee2194 I know what you mean, yoke style sweaters seem to be the most hit and miss when it comes to fit issues. I'm just guessing it has to do with the increases being evenly spaced, which can cause a poor fitting tube. Whereas say a raglan is only increasing either side of the shoulder, the fabric is a bit more human-shaped....I don't know 🤣 Definitely a question for designers!
After watching more reviews than I can count, I ordered this one!
@@RC-pn8zu Yay! I hope you love it as much as I do. Three years later and it's still performing as perfectly as the first time I used it
A quick steam will flatten the rolled edges so you can measure more precisely.
The cardigan is so cute 😂🤣😂🤣🤣 That’s good to know about cashmere growing Eta that lace cardigan is gorgeous
awesome tutorial!!!
Clear, concise, so well done--congratulations on both firsts. This was immensely helpful--thank you!!
Thank you for a great explanation. Can I ask what wool you used? I am making a jumper with super wash - should I do anything different as it is a super wash? Thanks
I used Rauma Garn Finull which is a non-superwash wool yarn and worked wonderfully! But I've steeked with superwash yarns before and it will also work well, you just want to make sure that you reinforce your stitches very well to prevent them from unraveling. A zig-zag stitch on a sewing machine would be perfect to do the job!
this is insane. im so exited to get to do it sometime!
Is it just my phone or is the footage incredibly choppy around the 13 minute mark?
Omg you're right, it is super choppy around the 13 minute mark! I'm certain it never used to be like that...so weird 😵💫
I am just starting to knit colorwork. I have knitted fine lace shawls for 40 years and can design them in my sleep, but now that I am retired I wanted to try something new. This is wonderful information and so far beyond my skill level that I have to do a lot more practice on other colorwork techniques before I try this, but I now know where to go when I get to this stage. Thank you so much for this information.
Thank you, I'm so happy to hear you found this helpful! Although, I disagree that this would be far beyond your skill level - if you can knit fine lace shawls in your sleep, then you *absolutely* have the skill to knit colourwork! It's just a new technique but I'm confident that you'll easily find your rhythm.
@@acornknits I see lots of swatches being cut in my future. I have always seen fine lace shawl designs in my head but now I am starting to see colorwork patterns there! LOL!!
OH MY GOD THANK YOU ❤️ You just answered my most pressing question : "Is it possible to knit a big tube of colorwork in the round and add a nicely shaped collar afterwards?" I could find answers for sleeves, but not so much for the collar. You juste made my idea of a sweater possible 😊
YAY!! That's so great to hear 🙌
I just added extra stitches to steek sleeves for the first time. I’m glad I watched this so now I’ll add a facing to hide the cut fabric.
Congratulations, that's so exciting! ✨
I am very glad you are back! It's nice to see one youtuber with the same build and the same taste as mine, and also one who also lives in the South Hemisphere. Your videos always inspire me!
Thank you so much, that means a lot! It's really great when you come across someone who shares a similar taste in design and style - especially when they live in the same climate 🌏🧶
Hi There! Thank you for the video it is really helpful! I do have a question though, where do you pick up the front stitches for the collar? Is it in between the two lines that you have sewn? or is it below the two lines (if you're looking at the sweater with the bottom closest to you). Thank you in advance for your help!
Thank you! I picked up the stitches for the collar below the two lines that were sewn (if you're looking at the sweater with the bottom closest to you). This is so the lines act as a barrier to prevent any stitches which unravel from where the collar was steeked, from reaching the stitches that are picked up for the collar. I hope that makes sense! ☺️🧶
@@acornknits Thank you SO much! This is perfect! I really appreciate the help and this definitely makes sense! I am working on a design and will definitely put this video as recommended watching!
@@chin2tog you're welcome, I'm so happy to hear that it helped. Good luck with the design, I bet it's going to turn out beautifully!
Love your tutorial. Thank you. And that sweater 😍
Knitting for Olive merino is oeko-tex certified which means it is superwash treated 😊I agree it behaves differently to other superwash yarns, and might have a diluted coating. I wish there was some standardisation of disclosure including the percentage of resin used in the treatment! great podcast as usual, thanks for all the chatty info 🤎
Oh really? I didn't know that oeko-tex certified yarns were all superwash treated - I thought it the certification could also just relate to the dyes that were used for natural, non-superwash yarns. That's good to know 😊 The Knitting for Olive merino is such a delight to use and feels so natural in comparison to some of the squeaky, heavily coated superwash yarns.
Thank you ❤
I love the dress. But I can't find the pattern. Do you have a link??
I'm so sorry, the pattern hasn't been released yet 😭 However, from looking at other designs by Fabel Knitwear, I think you could get a very similar garment if you adapted the Norma Jean Turtleneck pattern - swap the 2x2 rib collar for 1x1 twisted rib and extend the body of the sweater to a dress length. You could also add in waist shaping like I did, or just leave it out for simplicity (most of the other testers who knit this dress didn't bother with waist shaping). I hope that helps!
Just wanted to let you know that the dress pattern has now been released!! www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/academia-dress 🥳🎉
Great show, I'm nearly finished Natajsha Hornby summer top "Joni" purchased on Ravelry.
The Joni top looks like such beautiful pattern - I really love the curved hem and the cap sleeves. What type of yarn did you decide to knit yours up in?
I used BC Garn Lino 100% linen..hey say it gets softer with wear, it is good but quite 'thin'.If knitting it again I would use a soft cotton/linenblend maybe. 🙂
@@salomeelizabeth6026 pure linen yarns can be a bit hit and miss sometimes! Although BC Garn make such great yarns, I'm sure it will soften up beautifully 😊 Ohhh a version in pure silk could be another great pairing!
I just finished test knitting poison grrls sleigh ride Christmas sweater but before that I did the test for the “two bit tee “ which is similar to the top Marilyn wears. I recommend that pattern, that would be great for the current Southern Hemisphere weather.
Ohh you're so lucky - they're both such stunning patterns! Although, what Poisin Grrls pattern *isn't* amazing?! You're right, the Two-Bit tee would be a a great option for warmer weather. What yarn/fibre did you knit yours up with?
@@acornknits I had a knit picks sport weight that unfortunately was discontinued it was the paregon line and it was beautiful cause it was merino silk blend. But the top is a sport weight I did mine in a lovely royal blue
Check out the Other Loops Tops by Other Loops if you are looking for a summer fun top. I have a couple I knitted on my Ravelry if you are interested.
Thanks for the recommendation! I've heard a lot of good things about the Other Loops Top 😊 I'm curious to hear what fibres you used to knit them up with - which ones did you feel worked best?
I used Morris and Sons Empire 4ply for the first one and for the second one Önling No. 11. While Empire wasn't as soft it was certainly so much easier to knit with. Önling No. 11 is incredibly fine but unbelievably soft. It was almost painful knitting all the ribbing on this yarn. Overall I think if I knit it again I would use Empire - simply because it felt more robust and easier to knit with. I am curious if you do knit this what you end up using@@acornknits
Ooh you’ve inspired me to look at the poison grrls patterns, they’re lovely! I definitely need to practice doing some waist shaping, it always looks beautiful on your knits 🩵
I'm so happy to hear it! Her patterns are so beautiful and classic. Waist shaping is a breeze and once you start, it's hard to go back. I also think, since wool has so much elasticity, there's a lot of wiggle room so you don't have to get the waist shaping 'perfect' for it to still look amazing.
New sub! For the vee tee, if the sleeve really bothers you, you could maybe put some elastic (or a crochet edge) to have it gather like puff sleeves :) Lovely channel!
That's such a brilliant idea! I love the idea of adding elastic to create a cute little puff sleeve, so adorable! And thanks so much for subscribing 🧶✨
If you like the Ankers summer shirt have a look at Sommerknus by elsebeth judith it's a similar style but more interesting to knit. I made mine in King Cole Finesse cotton silk, it's very reasonably priced and feels lovely next to skin. Great pattern and mine was a perfect fit.
Ohhh that sounds like a great recommendation! I remember seeing that pattern trending on Raverly a few months ago (when it was summer in the northern hemisphere) - it's almost like a summery Guernsey-style sweater and a cotton/silk yarn would be perfect for warm weather.
@@acornknits one thing to mention the 5mm recommended needle was too big for the cotton silk I went with a 4.5mm. Also even with short rows the back neckline sits a bit too low for me it was knit with 4.00mm but next time I will use 3.75 or 3.50. Just my preference it might not bother you.
Beautiful work.
Thank you so much 💐
I teally do enjoy your podcast everytime. I like designs you knitt, very feminine what I sometimes miss. Amazing, thank you for your work❤
That's so kind of you to say, thank you! 💖 I also enjoy finding other knitters who have a similar taste in knitwear to me - feminine, tailored and simple 🥰
Congratulations on your engagement!!! Loving your current WIPS and the finished burnt orange shawl is stunning. Brisbane is getting warm too but I too like to keep my hands busy. Good excuse to keep buying yarn 😅😅😅
Thank you so much! 💞 Haha agreed! Literally any excuse to buy yarn is a good excuse to me 🧶😅 Have you got any summer knitting plans to get you through the Queensland heat?
@@acornknits I am currently knitting scarfs and beanies as we are heading overseas to have a cold winter in Japan and Korea to get away from the Brisbane humidity and heat. I want to feel the snow.
All your projects are so beautiful! Love how the xmas coloured shawl turned out as well! You finished so many projects!!! 😮
Congratulations on your engagement as well!!! 🎉

Thank you so much that was very helpful. I’m knitting a Norwegian lice sweater with very basic instructions so your video has given me the confidence to carry on! Thank you 😊
Thank you for taking the time to let me know this walkthrough was helpful, I'm so happy to hear it! ✨💞🌿
Congratulations!!! I have been thinking about making the Robinson wrap and after seeing yours, I will for sure! How amazing to donate to charity and they are amazing😃
Thank you!!! 💞 ohhh yes, you definitely should! It's such a great pattern, really easy to follow and the finished object is stunning. I'm tempted to try it in a cotton/silk yarn for summer...
great podcast!
This is very helpful, I want to do one for my husband. I don’t have a sewing machine, do you think I could do those steps by hand? Thanks
I'm so glad to hear it - you definitely should, they're such a great project! And yes, you absolutely can do this by hand without a sewing machine 😊 Instead of using a sewing machine, you use a crochet hook to do a single crochet reinforcement - I actually did this on another project and it worked so well (the Vair pullover by Gudrun Johnston). The crochet method is more time-consuming but gives a lovely, polished finish. If you search 'crochet reinforcement steek' on TH-cam there's a few really helpful tutorials 💖🧶
For your Pictus socks: could you duplicate stitch or darn in some 100% nylon in the heel to give more strength/wearability. I live in 🇨🇦 and its easy to find this kind of nylon made just for this purpose. Thanks for the lovely podcast.
That's a great idea, thank you for suggesting it! I think that's such a clever way to add extra durability to a finished pair of socks 🧦
Wow! I’m in love with your Bifurca vest - it is gorgeous! Also, I have never seen such beautiful charity knits - so lovely!
Couldn't agree more! The Bifurca vest is such a beautiful design and the construction is so unique - Teti really out-did herself with this pattern 💖
Lively knits. For the corset, you could try sewing some poppers between the buttons to take up the strain.
Ohhhhh that's a brilliant idea, I hadn't thought about that!
The shawl you made for charity looks really beautiful 😊 and what a nice thought and reason to make it too
Awwh thank you! 😊 I hope it's keeping someone warm and brightening up their day
Woohoo a Sydney knitting podcast! I am from Sydney too!! I have been trying to make the Honey Clutch - stalled a bit ...maybe one day.
Wooo!! 🦘🙌 You definitely should - and you can TOTALLY do it! The hardest part is getting started and wrapping your head around the honeycomb brioche. But once it *clicks*, it's so much fun and absolutely flys by!
Nice to see a new podcast from you. Your projects look beautiful - especially the Destination Unknown. The mosaic knitting really works well with the gradient. Someone will definitely appreciate that lovely shawl. :)
Thanks for stopping by 💐🤗 The Destination Unknown was such a fun pattern and I agree, I think the gradient yarn worked really well with the pattern. I'm tempted to do another but with a dark navy as the main and a speckled white as the contrast colour...
So nice seeing you again!
Thanks so much, it's good to be back! 🥰
So there is no way to knit a Norwegian sweater the way you would knit an Icelandic sweater? In the round bottom to top with grafted sleeves? So you can do away with the stressful part of the steeking!😅
Oh absolutely, you could definitely adapt this style of pattern so there's no steeking needed. But nothing quite compares to the feeling of cutting into your knitted fabric...terrifying and thrilling 🤣
How do you determine how long to cut for the sleeves
I use the width of the sleeve to determine how much need I need to cut so the sleeves can be attached. The explanation is between 0:40 to 1:30 - but essentially, if your sleeves are 20 cm wide (when laying flat) then you will need to cut 20cm into the body to attach them. Hope that helps! 😊🌿
Your knits are so so gorgeous, but I am especially in love with that dress! I checked if the pattern had been released since then, but no :'( You did such an amazing job, it fits you absolutely perfectly!
Thank you! I'm in love with this dress as well - I've been keeping an eye out for when Fabel Knitwear will release the pattern and I'm so surprised that it hasn't been released yet 😭 It's such a shame because it's a beautiful pattern and so simple to follow. But, I think you could get a very similar garment if you adapted her Norma Jean Turtleneck pattern - swap the 2x2 rib collar for twisted 1x1 rib and extend the body of the sweater to a dress length ✨💃
