Smt. Rani Karnaa
Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee, Smt. Rani Karnaa was born in Hydrabad Sind now in Pakistan and nurtured under the great gurus Nrityacharya Narayan Prasad, pandit Sunder Prasad and Birju Maharaj. Rani Karnaa is one of our foremost exponent of kathak .She is known to have enriched and integrated the great traditons of Jaipur and Lucknow Gharana with an unusual sense of aesthetic adventure. Her creative repertoire finds expression in integrated compositions of Sahitya ,Sangeet and Nritya drawn from different cultural and literary treasures -such as Parvarti pujan, Shiva Vandana, Chatushpadi Chakradharan , Kajari and many more. Her works on aesthetic of kathak with professor S K Saxena of Delhi University is now well recognized.
Widely traveled in India and abroad she divides her time performing and teaching.

Rani Karnaa at her best
Kajari depicts the pangs of separation of a Nayika as she awaits the arrival of Krishna after decking herself in the solah shringar. Her life is empty, she mourns, without Krishna. The gathering clouds add to her mood of despondency. The sound of the raindrops, the plaintive cry of the peacock further increase her sense of desolation, as Krishna does not appear. She laments that he has abandoned her for another and pleads for someone to coax him to come to her. Only then will her agonizing suffering be appeased. But Krishna does not come. Totally disheartened the Nayika tears off her jewellery and disposes of the flowers she had prepared to welcome him.
This composition depicting both the Vasaksajja and Virodkanthita Nayika is from the Benares Gharana. The music in Raga Mishra Pilu is by Smt. Girija Devi.
