I had a similar die back after a re pot. By chance I was misting the plant (between two ficus) and now it's thriving.
Interesting, I should give that a try as well!
This is so helpful! What type of wire is this if you don’t mind me asking?
In this case it was copper wire, but aluminium wire also works well
@@ThatBonsaiGuy Thank you! :)
Which period was when you repot rosemary?
I repotted it in summer
😂
They need to be outside
Can you share more details about you inorganic soil?
It's a pre-made mixture of volcanic rock of different density, pumice and some already mixed in fertilizer.
hi, my daughter bought a beautiful tree from you, what's the best way to actually get a hold of you. my friend who lives in thamesford is very interested in some trees and knowledge... please and thanks.
Beautiful little tree, good sir! Hope your new method gets her going strong and vigorous
Thanks!
I love the fragrance of the lemon cypress tree. My local nursery sells these especially near Christmas. I've tried to grow these over the years and managed to keep one alive for two years before it died. They do well outside in the warm summer, but indoors over winter is when it's easy to kill these plants. I think indoors over winter they like higher humidity and be in a cooler room with bright light. That's kind of hard for me to do in my house. They are not too expensive so I might try another one this year.
Definitely give it a try again! I think also for me it was the not-that-great conditions during winter that had my previous tree struggling.
What happened to the tree after repotting !?
Sadly is was too far gone already
My Bertha Bonsai is sooo happy after 6 weeks in my home. I bought a bonsai mix & she is in a clay pot on top of a deep dish of lava rocks with spring water. I gave her a good drink 2 days ago with 1 tsp of fish emulsion to 3 cups of water. 2 days later I can’t believe how much more green & lush she is! Lots of new growth. I don’t want to prune her just yet…. Im liking her “hair.” Next feed Potassium& Magnesium too. Slow & steady wins the race. She likes a bedtime misting too.
Can you Bonsai a Ficus bush! It's 5 ft.tall now!!
Absolutely! Ficus normally buds back nicely, so you can shorten it and grow a nice new canopy
@@ThatBonsaiGuy Thank you sure would save a lot of time for large wide trunks I think 🤔.However budding depending on keeping your cuts above other blossoms or branches would have to be maintained from what I read ?? Stated that you cannot make your cuts beneath such blooms it wouldn't grow with new sprouts?
@@sandradaeschler6620yes, when trunk chopping it should still grow new branches, even from older wood
I have one that is 2 yrs old, I repotted it too soon, my first attempt at wiring (those branches are brittle), poor watering technique ... it still survives. Repotted, fair root structure, but lost some branches. Have fun with the pads some day, branches grow straight up as in nature.
Is it wrong to repot and prune indoor bonsai in the autumn? I live in Sweden and it is very dark in the winter time
Here in Austria I have not had problems with repotting indoor trees in autumn as we still get a decent amount of natural light, but I can see how the considerably darker winters in Sweden could be a problem. Normal indoor temperatures, paired with a grow light maybe could be a possible way to go?
I live in Stockholm sweden I try to not touch my trees too much from september to spring because its geting so dark hehe, if I do I always put them under my growlights
@@bonsaiandskate Yeah I usually try to leave them alone as much as possible as well in the winter
Thank you.
How are these progressing? I just got 3 little tiger bark ficus yo make a clump with. Thx for the video
Lots of growth, but for the trees to actually fuse together, it will still need sometime, at least one more good growth season
I’m having exactly the same issue as you have here. I’ve had my tree about a month so am just getting used to it. I’ve noticed over the last few weeks that I can go a full week without watering the tree and it’s still wet through. It’s September now, do you think it’s safe to repot it now? I’m worried if I don’t it’ll get worse, but I don’t want a repot at this time of year causing more issues
If you keep it indoors repotting in September should not be a problem. Better to have a tree in well draining soil that normally will bounce back from repotting quite fast, than a tree suffering through cold season in wet soil.
@@ThatBonsaiGuy you’re an absolute gent. Thank you so much for getting back to me and sharing your knowledge
It's best not to use 'fertilise' as a transitive verb when you aren't meaning adding sperm to egg or pollen to stigma. I know you will here it all the time but that doesn't mean they know what they're talking about. Americans say it more but again it doesn't mean it's right and as a once professional hort I can't help think you're talking about pollinating. Horts say add fertiliser or just plain and imply, 'feed'.
How long does the wire has to stay on branches to have the proper strength to stay?
It depends on how fast the tree is growing, but it is usually some months
Is it normal for the Musa Tropicana to Cry😢 From its tips
It is a sign of overwatering. It releases excess water over it's leaves
bekommt man die ablagerungen an den wurzeln wieder ab?
Ja, die kann man z.B. mit einer Zahnbürste entfernen
Good video
Thanks!
Nice lot of trees
Thanks!
Hello. I got my tree a few months ago and i have now seen ne growth. With it being September now should i touch it at this. I dont want to damage it
I understand that you want to start working on your tree. However, I personally would leave it be until the next growth season. Take care of it and keep it healthy and come spring you can prune it into shape ;)
Much better now, not so top heavy
Thanks! It was literally top heavy - the pruning also helped a lot with the stability in the pot
Nice video.... Give videos on adenium plants also.... From india.... 🎉
I wish! I am still looking for a healthy adenium here in my region. They are very hard to find unfortunately
@@ThatBonsaiGuy then its ok... Love your content
th-cam.com/video/HHoQ_ElOc8A/w-d-xo.html
I just bought one but sadly it is shedding super fast! It arrived bushy and bow it only has about 5-7 leaves left. What should i do?
Hard to say without knowing more about it. A common problem is overwatering. Make sure to let the top layer of the soil dry out in between waterings. If there is already root rot, you would need to remove the rotting roots and repot the tree. But as I said, there could be many other different reasons
What season can I repot?
Normally indoor bonsai can be repotted all year round. If you want to stay on the safe side, do it in late winter or early spring.
@@ThatBonsaiGuy many thanks 🙏🙏
Skinny fingers or Coral jade...its definitely not gollum or Hobbit...
Thx, that's good to know!

I have had a Ficus microcarpa for a few months now and at the middle of the summer I pruned and wired it. I've now noticed that one branch is losing leaves. What could the issue be?
Is it only the one branch that is losing leaves? It could be that the branch was damaged/snapped while wiring and is dying off now. If all the other branches seem to be healthy, that would be the most logical explanation.
@@ThatBonsaiGuy Actually that is true that branch snapped and I tried to tape it back if it could heal back. The rest of the leaves are fine but some of them have curled a little bit. I'm trying to figure out whether I'm using too much fertilizer or too little. Also some leaves have some dry areas but I'm confident that I'm not underwatering, could I be overwatering?
Hi:) I've had my ficus microcarpa for 2 years now and I've never repoted it. It is in the same soil like your ficus in the beginning of the video. Lately (the last couple of months) its trunk started shrinking a bit and the soil kinda dissapeared, so it isn't stable. Yesterday because of the wind from the window the ficus even fell on the side. I was going to repot it today, hoping that I can still save it. Do you think that will help? Thank you!!
Yes it will definitely help! The old soil seems to be completely deteriorated and no longer holding enough moisture for your tree to absorb through the roots.
Hi, I bought a Ginseng Ficus a few days ago... the size of the tree and the pot and the soil looks exactly like yours in this video, It's leaves are now turning black at the tips but they didn't start to fall yet, I didn't water it yet because I think it was overwatered already when I bought it and now I even see a bit of mold on the top of the soil. My room is very hot and humidity varies from 30% to 50% depending on when I turn on the AC. I placed it today near the window to get more sun maybe it helps.... but I don't know maybe should I just repot or you think it can recover?
By what you wrote it sounds like the soil is staying moist for too long. Repotting to better draining soil should definitely help with that problem. Also placing it in a sunnier spot will benefit the tree. The high temperature shouldn't be a problem, ficus as a species is normally used to that :)
Chinese pepper is NOT Z.piperitum, but Z. beecheyanum
Hi, and thank you for your video. What gauge is the recommended wire, please?
It depends on the thickness of the branches you would like to wire. I usually find that 2.5cm (1 inch) wire works for the most branches on my trees. For thicker branches rather opt for a higher gauge wire.
Thanks bonsai guy😊
Makes me want to do my first wiring
Thanks! Definitely go for it :)
Thanks Mr bonsai guy!😀
Love it
My microcarpa has been outside and had been doing well. I got it at Ikea so figured it could probably do with a repot as I don't know how long it was sitting there. I made a mix of general purpose potting soil with a lot of perlite and orchid wood chips mixed in. I've now started getting brown spots on my existing leaves while there are a bunch of new light green leaves coming in as well. I recently learned this may not have been the best mix for soil. Should I repot again or are these brown spots expected with stress of the repot and completely new soil environment? Should I let it drop as many leaves as it want to and see how it goes from there and if it adapts to the new soil, then repot in a year with better soil mix?
I would not repot again right away, as it is a lot of stress on the tree. Keep an eye on it - if there is new growth that's already a good sign. And some leaves dying back after a repot can also be expected. If no new growth is showing and the health of the tree gets worse, then repotting would be a viable way. But generally ficus are very sturdy and also forgive not so optimal soil.
@@ThatBonsaiGuy thank you!
Is myrtle tree deciduous?
Yes
I just did the same with the cuttings of my ficus…I really hope to be as successful because my cuttings are quite bigger…almost already tiny bonsai!
With ficus there is definitely a chance! Just don't give up too early. It took almost a month until I saw the first roots on this cutting.
@@ThatBonsaiGuy ah ok danke dir
Great work 👍
Thank you! I must say I'm also really happy with how it turned out. Now it's back to waiting 😅
I'd love to know what inorganic soil mix you're using! Is it leca?
It's a pumice and lava rock mixture
Thank you, always informative.
Thank you for the kind words!
Australian figs are very different to Asian figs, faster growing, cold hardy and super easy to grow from seed, cuttings or airlayers
Sounds interesting, I will definitely read up more on them
i have many banyans now, most are horror styled! i love them!
Oh that sounds so interesting!
Do I have to cut the branches back. I just bought one 2 weeks ago and had it put into a new pot because the roots were coming out at the bottom. Is it ultimately necessary to prune the tree. I love mine. I had 2 over the years and they died. I didn't know how to look after them. Thank you for your help. Hope you have a beautiful day.
If you want to keep it small and tidy, pruning will be necessary. Otherwise it will grow out over time and either become very leggy or shrub-like.
