Time's Dark Captains
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 ต.ค. 2019
This video channel was conceived to promote the founding and evolution of my business Time's Dark Captains. This video channel will provide to my existing clients and colleagues educational topics addressed in classes addressing asbestos, lead, and mold training courses at. In producing these videos I hope to acquire and hone the skills in video production necessary in the digital media community. This channel will explore some of the environmental challenges that concerns us all. This channel will later promote the theme of Time's Dark Captains which is to reanimate small town American with economic development at former industrial/manufacturing sites and environmentally impacted sites and not following the same tired "mixed use development" of contemporary economic development of gentrification. That would be a win-win for everyone. This channel will also address some other fun topics and activities as well that I find fulfilling, satisfying and necessary.
Houston Contract Worker Asbestos Exposure KHOU
An event that happened in 2012 in Houston, Texas. During the drought the City suffered many pipe breaks and interruptions in water service. They had to repair many pipe breaks. The composition estimate of the totality of pipes in the City of Houston is 20% estimated to be asbestos cement pipe and and 22% is unknow composition. Many workers are getting exposed to asbestos using power saws with no engineering controls, and then later exposures by asbestos cement pipe "replacement" by a method called pipe bursting or pipe sleeving. This method leaves crushed asbestos cement pipe debris and particles mixed up with the soils after process to be encountered by unknowing workers when repairs are needed.

Another great video!
Very interesting!! I'm wondering if we can video the image with the graticule for training videos? Thanks
Help yourself. I took those pictures.
The garbage export series never used timber until the 80s.
They were made out of poplar and luan mahogany plies. What do you mean "timber"? Export was one of he largest selling series and pretty good drums for the economy models. Still has multi-ply compression shells. Just needed some finer finishing. The real secret to drums is the bearing edges and heads make all the difference. DW/Sonor/Tama/Pearl. The high end sets just have cosmetic superiority. Drums are really pretty simple.
I have three Pearl vintage drums BURGUNDY RED AND LIPSTICK RED
Best drums made!!! Thatnks for watching...
Just bought an pearl maple made in USA love it don’t know much about it supposedly was built around the 80s if anybody knows more about it I would greatly appreciate it
TH-cam has throttled this video. The resolution is HORRIBLE. Anyway, there are several social media groups that discuss Pearl Drums. On FB it is Vintage Pearl Drums. Anyway, if it has a black badge like those in this video, it is late 1970s early 1980s. If it has the gold badges the it will either say MLX or MX on the badge. anything later I get mixed up with all the versions. Go to Wikipedia and also search for "Vintage Drum Badges" and you can find the rough timeframe yours were made.
Looking back it was such a killer value to own a Pearl Export kit as my first. I paid for it by saving my money from my paper route, which took two years - the same amount of time it took me to get my parents to approve of it! But with my 1989 Ferrari Red Export kit - two 22" kicks, 12, 12, 13, 13, 16 and 18 toms, and of course the stock metal snare drum and excellent hardware, highlighted by the chain-driven foot pedal. I learned to tune drums using them - and boy did they tune up great with Remo Pinstripes on the kicks and toms. The snare was capable of sounding like a Supraphonic, and that pedal was adjustable to where you could easily dial in your Bonham doubles! A 14 year old could feel like Tommy Lee after school for hours every day! BTW once I had the experience of lugging this kit in the Dodge Caravan to my first gig, and the sound guy mic'd one kick with reverb and the other without (and about half the volume) I decided to get a double kick pedal hahaha. Fast forward 35 years and today one of my kits is a late model Crystal Beats with 24" and 22" kicks, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 toms. And man do they sound f'n great!!! Thanks for the info and trip down memory lane.
I recovered a thrift shop Export kit just last year. Pearl knew what they were making with the Export series: the luan mahogany compression molded shell, tough and round, lasts forever. They sound great!. So thanks for the reply and glad we could take you back a few years.
Good stuff. As kids growing up in the 70s, I think we are all obsessed with Peter Chris’ monster pearl drum kit. I still love to see that 70s vintage badge. That era the kits were out of reach for me. When I was 14 I settled on a pearl export kit. Took me till I was 33 to get an MMX kit and since I’ve owned 10 more kits😬
Yeah it is a disease, getting more sets. I think have enough by now. I think the 80s went overboard with the huge sets. But the same is true today, it seems that most drummers sport a 4 piece kit and smaller more portable kits and suitcase kits. That will NEVER be my thing. I like minimalism as much as the next guy, however, every drummer playing a 4 piece is kinda the same thing; current fad.
@@timesdarkcaptains9170 I absolutely hate everyone’s backline kit is a stupid four piece lol. The more toms the more voices!
Great Explanation. Very helpful. Thanks!
Thank You Todd. I appreciate it. Glad it helped!
Does any commercial building owner in the state of Texas need to have an asbestos inspection and asbestos report before renting out their space? Thanks
Under the Texas asbestos Protection Act TAHPA and the Regulation TAHPR, A public or commercial building or apartments over 4 units have to have an asbestos survey to get a building permit for renovation or demolition. Under the Federal NESHAP any facility has to have an inspection before any renovation or demolition. There is no requirement to have an asbestos inspection for any building except a school building has to have a survey andd a management plan. There is not State or Federal requirement to have asbestos surveys for merely renting. However in Texas if there is knowledge of asbestos. lead or mold that has to be disclosed in residential and commercial leases.
So essentially if I'm hearing you correctly, you are saying that to be in compliance with state law: You need a mold assessor to come out once mold is detected. Once the mold assessment contractor shows the entire area of where the mold is in the home, you can hire anyone to remediate the mold? The detail about who is paying for it doesn't matter, insurance coverage or out of pocket. Is that what you are saying?
Asking from the point of view of a contractor, not a home owner. Also from the point of view that the mold growth is greater than 25 square feet.
No not what I said in Video. ALL mold projects regardless of size has to have an MAC come out and do an assessment AND write a Mold Remediation Protocol. THEN the Mold Remediation Contractor (MRC) who is licensed has to do the mold remediation. There is NO provision for a contractor intending to do mold remediation to not follow the rules. After the remediation is done then the LAW requires a mold remediation clearance assessment with sampling and if successful an Insurance document called a Certificate of Mold Damage Remediation (CMDR) MUST be issued to the Property Owner.
The TMARR applies "regardless of of the amount of mold growth" The TMARR is based on certain exemptions by property type. The Total area is the area that needs to be cleaned or removed to remediate the "mold contamination" not just the visible growth. Most contractors do not read the rules and just go on "what they heard". THAT is their problem. I clearly stated in the video the "25 contiguous square feet" issue and stated quite clearly that even under that level the LAWS must be followed with licensed people. If you need more specifics, the rule is available on the TDLR web site for your reading enjoyment.
@@timesdarkcaptains9170 so what does from 8:00-8:37 in your video mean?
My pedals. Gen 1 swivo with needle bearings. 69 speed king, 75 slingerland yellow jacket double spring.
I messed around with Speedkings a little, but really do not have the experience to comment on them good or bad. The guys that like them, LOVE them and swear by them. I always wanted to play a Yellojacket, but never got the chance. Those looked like awesome pedals. The Swivomatics, I played around with some of those because some friends had Rogers kits, and I liked them. About the time I was getting exposed to the Tama King Beats. My point on this video is there are a LOT of great older high end pedals, and the youngers should check them out too. Great pedals, cheap prices and durable! I think any of the pedals you mentioned would be great. I only commented on pedals I was experienced with. Thanks for you comment!
Great kits. I've always loved Pearl drums and they are for whatever reason underrated. I regularly see kits where I live for sale for great prices. I just bought a 1972 Wood Fibreglass kit " the professional Jazz kit" according to catalog for $300 with the copper on steel snare 4214 maybe it's called. Although the seller thought it was steel. What is your thoughts on early export kits to refinish?
I did a refinish a 1976 Wood Fiberglass in that video. I also saved and refinished an Export and have a video about it with a re-wrap. Search for Superman Drumset and you will find the steps in refurbing a set. Sounds like you got a lot of drumset for very little money! A pearl WF for $300 is good if hardware is in good shape. Exports are great sets, well made and mass produced they have seen the worst wear we can give 'em, and most are in great shape, just needs some cosmetic care.
I still own the t rex base drum pedal speed king .someone snatched it at the hard Rock in Niagara falls 35 years approx
I do like the king beats, they are beasts, and a bit slow though. The Ludwig speedkings I have never played. People do love them but I know little other they are well build and durable design..
I own the bsae drum pedal that belonged to the t rex s drummer
Don't know if it's true or not bout t rex pedal but that's what I was told
Thank you so much. There are barely any videos on these topics
That is why I made them. I also followed the Standard of NIOSH 7400 faithfully when developing the script. I am glad they helped you out.
What was that? You have shown nothing about capsule replacement. We got to hear you sing and paint.
That was a new capsule with the inside spacer the capsule is is secured to with an o ring. Didn't you watch the video? I said exactly that. I have had others commenters say how valuable this was. It was not just painting and singing.
@@timesdarkcaptains9170 The video needed to focus on you changing the capsule to be of any real use given your title. A little thought goes a long way.

Those King Beats were out around the same time as the Premier 252. Similar feel and grunt.
I always wanted to play one of those Premier 252, just never got the chance.
Great informative video and I appreciate your time putting this together! I have a Sennheiser E835 with no signal out put. Do I need to replace the capsule only or the complete assembly and where is a good place to buy parts?
You can get the capsule and just use the original assembly. If you replace the entire assembly, you do not have to do any de-soldering, and resoldering. It is two pieces of plastic surrounding the capsule, held by an o-ring. You an purchase replacement capsules or the complete assembly on Ebay or Amazon. I would also look for an original Sennheiser part if you can. I just got a generic. Or go buy a working E835 that looks bad cosmetically but works and put in the good mic. E835 will get cheap. Live music places are drying up. In our area, 30% of the venues closed because off expense. Musicians will be selling all kinds of good to decent mics in anywhere from 2-6 months from now. Go on Ebay and search for e835 replacement capsule and up will come some results. THANK YOU for the reply and so glad it helped you. BTW search for e835 mics, you just may find a good cheap one.
You have an amazing collection, learn so much about vintage pearls. I have a president series I’m restoring.
Keep at it! I am "recreating" my very first drum set; a 1975 Pearl Jazz Rock with White leathertette covering. Took FOREVER to find that material. It is almost done. I found some old Pearl Luan shells and refurbed them, found period specific hardware and badges. They look great. I may have to do another video on the three sets I built since this video! THANK YOU for watch and the reply. Just work slowly and deliberately on the restoration process.
Vintage drums are made with old growth timber and have thicker plys this is the difference in the sound of today’s drums I think
I think that is true. But a lot of the 19070s sets were made with Philippine Mahogany, kind of stuff the used on door skins, but the Pearl compression shell construction in those days was a game changer and they were thicker. I am now working on a 1975 Pearl kit an they are all the 9 ply luan shells and they are fantastic.
Subbed! My first unbelievably good drum set was a Pearl Blx, in Arctic White, it was an absolutely killer drum set, the shells were just The Best sounding I'd ever heard. Loads of people who heard me playing it while rehearsing or gigging would mention it as well. I even rented it out for trusted people to use, for recording only. Since then, (early noughties) I got hooked on maple set's and branched off and on to Premier Signia maple drums, other's too, another massive favourite range of mine from Premier drums. Now I'm back trawling the web for deals and classic Pearl drums, especially from the eras you're talking about in this video, I recently bought a GLX Super Pro bass drum, it's unbelievable!! Deep Cherry red colour and it's in absolutely great condition!! I'll build up a classic set of Pearl maple drums and in whatever colour they are available in, and the Japan made ones.... say no more. 🙏
Pearl really upped their game with the MLX/BLX/DLX series. The compression constructed shells last literally a lifetime. Working on a 1975 Pearl Luan set right now. Will have some more videos coming this Nov/Dec.
I hope it was a good gig.
Good job covering some classics. Just a side note, the Sonor is largely a Speed King clone and the DW is a Camco Clone. The other two are just variations on the Ludwig and Camco designs.
The TAMA King Beats were the response to that awesome Premier 252 I believe. Thanks for the comment!!!
Brilliant help, Thanks!

I’m back for more, I respect your cause. What are your thoughts on companies using encapsulates before PRV which has become more popular now?
Well, now you are being discussed in mold class, LOL. I would go with the IICRC S520 that states the Visual Inspection by the IEP, (or in Texas, an MAC) on of encapsulants and treatments.
@@timesdarkcaptains9170 pg 51 I believe, I’ll have to double check. Just wanted your professional take on it. I’m pretty sure it’s a “should” that no sealants or encapsulates go on until PRV passes. I’m an IICRC AMRT btw.
I’m back for seconds :) I’ve noticed to success rates for a Condition 3 are higher if an IEP always writes the scope of work for the remediation contractor. Accountability is crucial too (PRV). Speaking of PRV, what are your opinions for post testing surface sampling and what counts determine a pass or a fail? Raw count for example?
Thanks for the response sneakypete. Since I am in Texas that is a must regardless of the amount involved. Under the Texas rules (and some other state rules) the Mold Assessment Consultant (IICRC equivalent of an IEP) must write the protocol AND the Mold Remediation Contractor must write a work plan the supports and executes the protocol. We also have have a 3 step clearance process: VISUAL: absence of mold and wood rot, PROCEDURAL: analysis of whether the project was conducted with the protocol and the work plan, and ANALYTICAL, do the samples meet the predetermined levels in the protocol. Does everyone do this or hang paper? As for the surface sampling and levels, in the proposed rules in Texas was "30 counts/square inch" and suggested to have a minimum of two samples and collect them at a rate of one per 500 square feet of containment. I think that is reasonable, but sampling alone is not the whole picture and never was in mold investigations and remediation. Air samples particularly need to be taken in conditions where they will work and at the correct number which is not one here and there. That did not make it into the final rules. For analysis never use raw counts for anything other than proportion, especially with air samples. In short, the Texas rules did not establish levels or practices, but require every one to work out what they are going to do prior to starting and notifying the client beforehand. Accountability has gone south in Texas because the TDLR did not enforce this rule after DSHS gave them the program since 2017.
@@timesdarkcaptains9170 Awesome, thanks for sharing. So the 30 counts for the sq in surface sample is not the raw count then? I ask this because surface results will have mc3 (sq meter as you already know) multiplied by the detection limit, which that part (DL) I still don’t have down fully yet. And for example, what if it ends up as 20 count of Stachybotrys or Chaetomium vs. Aspergillus/Penecilium surface results. Is that considered a fail because different molds are obviously more toxigenic?
It blows me away remediation company actually use client HVAC’s to mitigate humidity…
You don't use a swivel base or two leg hi hat stand with a double pedal? I won't use a static leg stand with my double pedal if I can at all help it. It's just too much of a pain.
If I were playing more often, yes I would get a two leg stand. However, I have become used to the setup with a regular hi-hat stand and double pedals.
Thumbs up, keep up the fight. This industry is a disaster.
i didnt know how much i needed this video until now. My sennheiser e835 stopped receiving signal a day before my show
Hello. I own at least two used Tama Kingbeat b.d. pedals. You said yours were fast. Mine are durable, but not quite as fast. They are a bit clunky. Did to refurbish the ones you own?
Yes, and I just messed with the settings and the adjustments to get spring tension right then beater throw, and then the angle of the beater. They will never be a speed king or a DW5000, but they can be as fast as most people.
@@timesdarkcaptains9170 thanks. That was supposed to be " did you refurbish" , but you got what I was trying to say.

Is Aggressive air sampling required for PCM final clearance?
In Texas in Public and Commercial buildings it is by law. In general practice in using clearance by PCM taking the proper amount of volume with aggressive sampling and using that to compare back to a blank level (which is what we are doing) would be required as proper practice. In a school under AHERA, yes any clearance would have to be collected aggressively. In all the guidance books they say you should collect any clearance samples aggressively..

Gaines Investment Trust owns and manages many apartments in DFW. Many tenants have issues with mold in their unit but good luck getting help. City of Irving Code Enforcement ignored my written request for a licensed Mold Assessor to inspect a building with Stachybotris and instead sent someone out to paint over it! Everything that protects consumers is corrupt!
Sorry for the delay in reply. Catching up. You can contact the State AG office and they have a form to fill out to break the lease if there is a mold and water problem, and the tenants have continued to pay rent. IF you are behind in rent or threatening to not pay rent, that can upset this process. I had the form a long time ago. But you can take it to a City attorney or a Justice of the Peace, and if you have shown the landlord the problem and have given them reasonable time to fix it and they do not and it is a safety and health issue, the lease can be broken. No simply assuming the mold is a water damage indicator species like Stachybotrys is present and from a water source without a MAT or MAC determination. YOU can hire a MAT to do some air sampling to confirm, but make sure there are no damages caused by the tenant or the inspector. You have to have permission to damage or open walls. Good Luck.
I have a question, for a house that was built was in the 70’s that might have asbestos should they install air circulation equipment while they get the results back. Won’t that disturb the asbestos and circulate in the air.
The question is "why" then installed the circulation equipment. Any air circulation equipment for asbestos, mold, or lead should ONLY be running within a containment or enclosure to not blow it through the house. If the people that set up the circulation equipment for say drying out wet building components, they should have tested the building materials for asbestos or assumed, as we have NO BAN on asbestos in the United States. Most of the restoration and drying companies do this because they are charging insurance for the machine on a daily rate. Same reason we have $200 aspirins in the hospital. The IICRC is clear with drying in their Standard S500, and in the Mold Remediation standard S520 that the building materials a positive for asbestos until proven otherwise and the remediator MUST enclose or abate those hazards BEFORE continuing with active drying. Active drying is employing the fans and air circulation equipment.
@@timesdarkcaptains9170 so just so I’m clear even though there was asbestos they can still place equipment like air blowers as long as they contain the area. Can they remove materials on the floor like carpet or flooring?
@@Sipher97 No that is not what I said. IF they are removing the asbestos materials or mold , they that would have to be done in a containment. IN my reply I said they can only use air blowers for drying the struture if the asbestos, lead, mold, or hazardous materials are either removed or contained. So the asbestos or mold has to be isolated or contained BEFORE they can run the air blowers. Most drying companies say that is BS, that they have to dry first. But the IICRC S500 clearly states what I said, and states that active drying must cease until all hazardous materials are either removed , remediated or contained. Active drying is with the air blowers. Dehumidifiers would be somewhat passive.... However air circulation equipment in the mold remediation is common. what results are they waiting to get back??? Are they doing a mold remediation or an asbestos abatement? If they are just drying then they would not be waiting for any results "'to come back" as the drying instruments are in the field, not samples.
