Hiking at Guadalupe Mountains NP cut short due to WILDFIRE! 🔥🔥🔥

I went to Guadalupe Mountains National Park (GUMO) with intentions of hiking every trail in the park over the course of a week. The first day I arrived late after the long drive and hiked several shorter trails taking pictures which will be featured as a slideshow in a different video (Smith Spring, McKittrick Canyon Nature Trail, Permian Reef Geology Trail, and The Pinery Trail). This is video...

Dayhiking the Buckeye-Caney Creek Loop in the Ouachita National Forest
มุมมอง 4394 ปีที่แล้ว
Sorry about the quality, there was a light leak between the lens and wide angle adapter on my camera. I'll be hiking the trail again to collect better footage. In the meantime, here's this...a 10 mile loop consisting of the east Caney Creek Trail and the Buckeye Mountain trail, connected by a short road walk to close the loop.
Backpacking Permian Reef Trail at Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Backpacking the Permian Reef Trail at Guadalupe Mountains National Park This is an older video (September 2018) of me and some friends hiking the Permian Reef Trail at Guadalupe Mountains National Park. We stayed the night at the Wilderness Ridge backcountry camp, then hiked over to the New Mexico border the next day. This trail is strenuous (especially with no cloud cover), but the views into ...
Backpacking Outer Mountain Loop / South Rim at Big Bend National Park
มุมมอง 1.2K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Backpacking Outer Mountain Loop/South Rim at Big Bend National Park The Outer Mountain Loop in Big Bend National Park is a hiking trail containing the Blue Creek, Juniper Canyon, and Dodson trails. I also elected to hike the length of the South Rim along the Southwest, South, and Northeast Rim trails. My total route was approximately 29.5 miles. I began the hike at 1pm Friday from the Homer Wil...
Hell yeah! That’s a wonderland!
Wow! That’s such an awesome place!
I had to know the elevation, so I Googled it. 9,055 ft. Are you gasping for air? Thank you for sharing with us!
Lowest point on the loop around 8200', highest around 10900', average 9500'. I had absolutely zero issues with the elevation, but I almost killed Ben. I think that was from the miles I was pushing though. Would absolutely do this trail again.
What a stunningly beautiful place!! I'm excited to see some more Todd v Tudd videos coming out, and the video is so super smooth!
I'm excited to see more JG! I miss you!
Stunning! I wish i could hike Wyoming right about now.
Insert Doc Holliday "Say when" gif.
Beautiful area. And a nice walk around.
Thanks buddy!
Absolutely gorgeous!!
Almost the entire trail was filled with stunning views. The Winds get most of the Wyoming love, the Bighorns are really underappreciated....and "no" grizzlies!
@@ToddvsTodd sounds like we need to check into this place!! We’ve been talking about the winds for years but I’m just not keen in sleeping in a tent in grizzly country.
What a beautiful area!!!
You guys would LOVE it!
That's beautiful. Thanks for sharing Todd.
Thanks Don, glad you enjoyed it.
I had to watch this again. One of these days I’m going back!
Whenever you're ready! Got an even better route planned out. 😁
I’ve always been in love with this area ever since my first visit over 40 years ago. It’s absolutely unique. There’s a whole lot of good shit packed in that far west Texas region.
Great video!
Thanks for watching!
Is there open camping anywhere up that canyon or is it camping at designated spots only. Great video.
The camping within GUMO is only at designated spots by (free) permit. The closest site is about 1.5 trail miles from the top of Bear Canyon. You need to get out there!
@@ToddvsTodd It is on the list for sure would be fun to do the top peaks in Texas as well
loved this video and stay safe .debs...
What a great video Todd! I absolutely have to get back out there pretty soon. It’s incredibly beautiful!
I appreciate it Steve! It really sucks that the Dog Fire is now over 1500 acres.
It's good to see you back out there man! I really need to get out of this part of Texas sometime and do a hike. At least I can enjoy the trail through your eyes until it happens. Sorry, you're plan got interrupted but it looked like an awesome trip! It's hard to tell on camera but it looks kind of flat in the beginning but I know it's hard to see elevation in a video, the bear canyon part looked steep though. Amazing look at Guadalupe Peak really enjoyed the view off of Hunter Peak as well, great video man!!!
The first part of this hike was in the low country. Interesting flora and fauna, but relatively flat. Bear Canyon is RIDICULOUS...and I love it! You really do need to join me for a trip out there one day, although it looks like the backcountry is getting decimated right now. The Dog Fire is now over 1300 acres.
@@ToddvsTodd I would love to do a hike out there with you sometime, I wish I had known you were going I could have made the trip with you but I know you will be going back. Keep in touch and let me know when you make another trip out and see if our schedules can line up. I think it would be awesome!!!
@@somewhereonthetrail I’m in!
You said the Texas top 10 is on your list. It's been a long time since I read about it, but if I remember right, isn't one of them on private property in the Davis Mountains?
Mount Livermore in the Davis Mountains. Not private property per se, but only open on certain dates.
Man, you are on the ball with your comments! I really enjoyed the video!
You've been having quite the luck on your recent trips! Unfortunately I think wildfires are going to be very bad across the Mountain West in 2021, so thankfully it sounds like this one was relatively contained. I think the Chisos might still be closed in Big Bend.
I swear I'm cursed.
Hi Todd. Unless, I am mistaken that huge pine is a Douglas Fir. My GF hugs that tree every time we pass by. And I always get confused as to which one is Shumard Peak and which one is Bartlett Peak as well. Thanks for sharing.
Todd Talks!!! Thank you for sharing details of the trails and your noted over-use of the word "nipple". 😀 Would love to check this place out sometime, but no one ever offers to go with me. Poor me. All joking aside, this was a gorgeous video and I can't wait to go check this place out with our little crew some day.
Nipple nipple nipple nipple!!!! 😝
Dork.
I took my topo map and followed along. I enjoyed the scenery and very much enjoyed your commentary. I plan to return to the Guads in Nov. The news of the wildfire had me biting my nails but looking at satellite data, it appears to have been contained. FWIW, it looks to have been centered around 1km to the East of the Tejas campground. It sucks that your plans got mangled but hey, you have another excuse to return. As of today (5/16/20), it looks like the backcountry is still closed.
Yes, the fire was located just northeast of the Juniper/Tejas intersection which I almost did first instead of Hunter Peak. Apparently, it is now contained and burned 33 acres. Thanks for watching, I'll definitely be going back to attempt my previous plan.
@@ToddvsTodd : I stand corrected. It appears to have burned more than 1,300 acres as of 5/21 and still going. You may have been one of the last if not the last person to have hiked the bowl trail in its 'semi-recovered' state since the last big fire. If it's grasses, leaves and pine needles that are burning, I hope the bigger trees don't catch.
@@exoterikestaseis7842 Yes, now burning almost all of The Bowl. Rain in the forecast, so let's hope for the best.
Gorgeous!!! Was really cool to see a different angle of Guadalupe Peak. Thanks for sharing your journey Todd!
You really did an awesome job of capturing the beauty of Big Bend in this video. I always love those hazy views deep into the desert like the ones you’re getting near the Juniper Canyon/Dodson intersection. The AOML and Mesa Anguila are both on my bucket list for the park.
Thanks Nate, I definitely love me some Big Bend. The BB100 is on my short list! 🤘
How lucky to have received this. Such a beautiful view. Were you using a GoPro? I have heard others having the same issue, so just wondering. Just found your channel and looking forward to seeing more :)
Hey there Todd! We just tagged you in a video regarding 5 tips for beginner backpackers. The video will post tomorrow morning. If you're not interested, no worries!!
What time of year did you go? Hoping to do this hike in 2021 and avoid high water and hot weather.
I started from Wind Cave NP on Sept 1. In hindsight, I should've waited until later in the season. It was hot! 🥵
OMG dude!! I randomly found you from Jetgirl! I'm doing this hike in June!! Where are you from man??!!
Jetgirl is my #2 homegirl, we've hiked many miles together!
@@ToddvsTodd I don't know her but I feel like I do. It's part of what I like about youtube....the community.
@@ToddvsTodd I have chatted with Texas HIKEaholics a lot too!!
That’s a painfully beautiful trail. Great video!
Thanks Steve! It's one of those places I could visit over and over again.
Wow!!! Looks amazing...
Absolutely gorgeous!!! Hope you'll be able to retrieve even more footage. So peaceful.
Very nice! Looks like you got that wide angle lens on there?
Actually, this clip doesn't have the wide angle or the anamorphic adapter. Thanks for checking it out!
@@ToddvsTodd wow really? Man it totally looked like it to me haha.
Beautiful!!!
It hurts my heart every time I look at the video and think about not finishing. 😢 It's just a snippet of video, but thanks for watching!
@@ToddvsTodd we understand! We have trail regrets too, but the truth of it is you went, you experienced it, and now you have the memory! Don’t beat yourself up!! There is so much out there to see!
Man I love that old shady lake recreation area. It’s a tired old CCC campground and I like to go out there during the week in late October or in November. For $15 you can have that entire place virtually to yourself. It’s paradise. Shhh! Don’t tell anybody.
It really is a great spot. I spent a TON of time there and at Albert Pike back in my youth.
@@ToddvsTodd lucky you. I didn’t discover that place until just a few years ago. Seems like the perfect place to build some good childhood memories. And how about Albert Pike? I kinda stumbled upon that place a few years ago, unaware of it’s tragic history. It really is a fascinating region. My family on my mom’s side is from south Arkansas nearby which kinda adds another level of interest for me. Anyway, I love getting up there to hike whenever I can because I live in a desert. A hiking desert. And by that I mean I have to travel hours and hours to get to any legit good hiking. I’m in Spring, just north of Houston. We’ve got the lone star trail, but that’s it, unless you’re prepared to drive out to Big Bend or the Guadalupe mtns. With the Ouachitas I can scratch that itch on a four day weekend. I could do it in three if I were still living in Longview.
Awesome brother!
Hey Todd, I planned a trip to GUMO NP and LNF this November. At fault are you, Cam, Zach and BlueCollar 😁. I'm also planning a [modified] GRT next year if all goes to plan. I want to commend you on your very well-written trip report I read on a forum somewhere. That, coupled with Cameron's videos, really brougt to life the highlights, struggles and victory of tackling the GRT. Would you happen to know if the boundary fence at the hiker gate runs all the way East along Wilderness Ridge or does it stop after a short distance from the gate?
Hey man, thanks for commenting! The GRT is a tough hike, but very rewarding. The boundary fence between GUMO and the Linc "dead-ends" to the west at the edge of McKittrick Canyon where the edge just basically falls away. I'm sad to say I haven't explored to the east to see how far the fence continues. I'm assuming it continues along the state line until it hits the edge of the canyon, but that's purely conjecture. Now that you mention it, it would be pretty easy to verify that. Hmmm...
@@ToddvsTodd I didn't see any obvious sign of a fence when looking at aerial imagery. Then again, I can't even spot the known hiker gate and adjacent fencing. There are several draws that come off the ridge and channel rain water toward the North. I wonder how they'd manage to fence them off without significantly impacting the landscape. Anyway, having easy access to the Northern sections of the plateaus up on Wilderness Ridge would serve dual or triple purposes for me. I suppose finding out when I get there will comprise part of the adventure aspect of the trip!
FWIW, I called around to get some general info and to inquire about the boundary. In short, the responses were as follows: BLM: "Huh??" LNF: "Good question; I dunno." GUMONP: "Yep, there's a fence all along the boundary except for rugged terrain areas. Fence only delineates the property. Hop over if you want, no problem." So....that takes care of that!
Need to add this to my "To Do" trail list ....
One of the best parts of the park, you won't regret it! Thanks for watching!
Thanks
Im about to do this trail in a couple of weeks ,You said counterclockwise but started off around the creek. It looks like thats clockwise according to all trails , can you clarify.
You're correct, I did go clockwise. Thanks for watching!
I watched till the end when u said clockwise , thanks
Awesome video brother! Never gotten on this one. It’s on my list though. Keep up the filming!
Just trying to keep up with you!
Well, this is embarrassing. At 5:37 you say, I don't see how anyone can get lost on this trail. I actually got lost on the top of Buckeye mountain on my first trip out there and had to bushwack off the side down to Katy Creek. Got severely dehydrated and vomited about 10 times or so, ah good times indeed. That view at 16:30 is one of the best views I've seen in Arkansas. Great video man!!!
Nice video!!! Really enjoyed it!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks guys, it was a fun little hike!
Great video. We just finished the OML yesterday and started/finished in same dir as you did. FYI, there was a bear at Juniper springs who was not afraid of the 4 of us and acted a bit aggressive (grunts and warning stomps), so we couldn't get water there. Afterwards he went sniffing around the area where we had briefly put our packs down, so be careful and do not leave them unattended. Luckily some awesome folks on the trail, and a couple at the Juniper Canyon road cache helped us out and saved our trip by sharing water.
Sounds intense! Thanks for watching!
Nice one, Todd! An area I love - the Ouachitas never disappoint!
I appreciate it Chris, the Ouachitas are pretty much my favorite place on Earth.
Very pretty area, and you had me cracking up with the final destination reference! The Milky Way pics were awesome.
I'm glad you got to do this hike, I know you've been thinking about it a long time.
Woulda been better if you were with me my brother!
Cool hike man. The video quality really didn't look bad at all. Can't wait to be doing it myself here shortly. I'll try to look up that campsite near the falls. I'm assuming there are several good sites down around the creek?
Oh yeah, finding a site near the creek won't be hard at all.
Heck of a nice trail and you did a really good job with this video Todd. I can't imagine anyone not liking the Ouachita or the Ozark National Forest. I'm right there with you on your feelings about uphill and downhill. Hahaha. Thanks for sharing your hike with us. You did Goo 'd
Todd...top quality video man! I think I’m going to head back out there soon...I NEED to get this trip under my belt!
