Dave's Classic Garage Tours
Australia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 มิ.ย. 2022
- Classic cars as well as vintage, veteran and RADwood cars from the vantage point of the mechanics, technicians, panel beaters and painters that work to keep our motoring heritage on the road.
In this episode ....
Two videos a week featuring cars from the veteran to RADwood eras, including car restoration, rebuilds, repairs and restomods to anything from Aussie & American muscle cars, Euro exotics, JDM, your coveted everyday runabout and more. If it's built before 1999, I'm interested.
My name is Dave and I simply l love classic cars and visiting garages and workshops to chat to the people working on them. I also devour car content on youtube so I thought I'd join in and make some myself. Hopefully you might like to come along for the journey as well.

Had my Xf stripped down to the firewall, rust done then stitched back together, rust in the same place on the top of the pillar roof areA , ten grand to fix . Still needed sills etc on my Ute . Front of sills done but another ten grand to replace all the rest. V8 falcon Xf . Is what it is.
Poor thing looks like Eric Bana drove it. It may not be the most valuable Ford muscle car ever produced, but it is the most desirable even in the states. In the US we got the same sticker package on the Cobra II with 105 hp 302. The Australians were super lucky.
You got that right. It’s weird how just because it’s not got a GT badge, Aussies look down on it. It, along with the Goss Special, is plainly the best looking hardtop of all. And may I tell you, it’s on its way to being back to rude health once again.
Not in the Shire of Casey.
Here is my comment. I'm an experienced auto body technician and can say with confidence that the panel will NOT take 300 hours to have ready for paint. If it does, I suggest you fire your metal guy or bill accordingly. I will turn it around on you, lots are wondering why they need over priced body shops lying about hours spent to finish something. When it sat in a corner for the majority of the time waiting for its couple of "get it done" hours. Greedy owners making bank off others talent just because they have the "overhang" and a greasy paycheck to provide are coming to an end thankfully. Lots are leaving this old BS and turning things around for themselves. Making things affordable for the majority and showing a lot of people it's really NOT that hard and most anyone can do it after the proper lessons given. Anyways, you keep trying to play everyone with them BS hours.....
Nice of you to put such a thorough case forward but the 300 hours is to get it back to on the road, epoxy, primer, multiple paint, multiple sand and clear to show condition.
It called the Mach 1 because as Americans we’re a country obsessed with fast fighter jets lol
I just never equated naming something after an event over a decade before as something worth wild celebrating on a new car
Should buff out
In a weekend
Personally, to me it’s just a 2 door chook. Nothing special, but as a classic car guy (especially 105 series Alfa Romeo’s) Fiats and Lancias, let alone classic Jags, Mercedes, BMWs etc, I get it that someone would wish to have restored such a car as the Cobra. Each to their own re which cars one likes in the end. 😁👍
Plenty of Euro classic car content for you to enjoy on the channel.
Hard top Cobra, looks more like the top was a little soft
Boom boom
300 hours, you are a rort!!
Dent repair, wipe and lead, epoxy, primer, paint, clear and multiple sanding. It’s not a five minute job
Hey Mista! Wot happened to the caaah??
It’s well on its way to being restored
@8:00 Back in the 90's l watched a silver Shelby GT 500 cruise out of the Frankston carpark, raced across in front of him to the driver's door and asked if it was the real deal ....he showed me the dash badges and the inertia real race seat belts attached to the factory roll cage ...that was enough for me . At the time he said he paid $90K Aussie. Bargain l said......he drove away happy happy!
A friend has a one of one....let's just say _Alan Moffat_ for now! XA/XB
The Cobra model was a solution to all the Coupe bodies Ford couldn't sell back in the day. Ford was selling two to three Hardtops a week back in the day and there were 500 Hardtop shells sitting in the yard. The XD was fast approaching, so the Cobra package was suggested by Edsell Ford II (Australia's Sales Manager) at the time as a way of getting rid of the surplus shells. I can't see the price this guy is asking for being realistic as even the dreamers on Carsales are asking $165-175K for their XA GT's, a vehicle with arguably greater provenance than the Cobra. MAYBE if the car was one of the 30 Bathurst Specials, built for the Australian Champioinship of Makes (apparently) The package equipped on those 30 cars included redesigned rear wheel wells to allow wider tires, reinforced front shock towers and strut braces, a beefed-up suspension cross member, a bespoke fiberglass front spoiler, and a scooped fiberglass hood. (The Series was won by ford that year, but it was a Ford Escort that won the series...) I couldn't bear to watch the repairer any more to find out if that was the case... After he stated that because a customer was "not from this area... we can't do your car" Must be nice to be booked out, but that doesn't make you recession proof...
I always find it funny how people to tell others to run their business and spend their money.
300 hrs is a little much even with a repair with minimal filler he must have mentioned the full rear section of the car the last quarter I did with similar damage only took around 80 hrs and I thought that was longer then it should have been and I don’t like filler
Plus Wipe and lead, epoxy, filler, paint, clear and all the sanding in between?
@ make more sense when using lead. Lead is a lost art these days
Two main differences of vee belts, Jacketed (Wrapped) and Raw Edge. Jacketed vee belts when worn will tend to slip and squeal long before failing, it's why they're preferred by car manufactures. A Raw Edge belt can transmit more power for the same size belt section, however will tend to burn and snap if not tensioned correctly and allowed to slip. Belts drive through the side walls by wedging into the Vee groove, a belt should not touch the bottom of the pulley. If belt is touching the base, then pulley &/or belt is worn. I'd suggest the rounded shape of the pressed metal pulley may be causing belt to spin, the deeper straight grooves of the orange pully help keep the belt more stable under high loads. Good video guys.
There is no way Id do crap with that POS. Australia has different ideas
You’re mistaking it with a 70s Mustang Cobra. This is an entirely different beast
I liked your clip... Thanks. Although.. The Camera guy said this was a unicorn being a 69 Mach 1 compared to the 70.... But I'm pretty sure there were a hell of a lot more 69s built than there were 70s.
You’re probably right. I just associated the 60s with the original design
Matching numbers original?? No question that it's worth spending the time to repair! Nothing but respect for those willing to put time effort and love into restoring classic Aussie muscle!
You got that right
It’s in good nick tho
“You’re not from this area we can’t do your car”. Why not?
Because locals have kept him in business for forty years and he gets enough work from them and has a sense of loyalty so that they’re not left waiting for their cars to be worked on.
Ony the ford Granada came to us
How much is the total restoration cost? Cool car.
A lot
Is it an aftermarket or sleeved 351c with a 4.155" bore and 4" stroke or is it a tall deck 400/351m block 0.030" over with a 4.25" crank? Either way should work ok so long as it's a well thought out package, the 400/351m block would be much cheaper in the USA and the 434 stroker kit is readily available...not sure how difficult it would be to do in Australia, the other two options would be very expensive generally but the larger bore would work great with 4V Cleveland or aftermarket Clevo heads. The long stroke would crush on tq and make very aggressive heads and cams much more drivable...not sure how much better than a common 393 or 408 stroker Clevo.
God this guy can talk up 💩
37 eight hour days on that quarter panel? One bloke on $60/h = 60x8x37 =17,760
$60/hr? What year is it? 2004?
Who knows - this may be the one that was stolen from me. One day I will find it and take it back with a court order.
Let me assure you. It wasn’t this one
Thanks for sharing the update on the ESP good work keep them coming
those saying 300 hrs is bs don’t understand the value of good work
A man talking sense at last
On a 1/4 panel. You are dilutional
The cobra was a bit of a joke really….rhe story was that hardtops wouldn’t sell so Edsel told them to paint some blue stripes on them and call them a cobra! All fmx autos from memory.
Best looking “joke” around IMO
@ each to their own, blue stripes and a sticker pack 😂😂
Most of that will buff out
In a weekend
300 hrs for one 1/4 panel, 300 hrs = $30K
Show me a resto shop charging $100/hr. - if they’re any good, they’re being mugs
@@davesclassicgaragetours you have to remember you have U.S. people watching so $100usd equals to $160aud.
300 hours. ROTFLMAO. Even bringing that panel back to dead straight with pulling and shrinking the metal to near perfect would take nothing near that and you might have a very fine half a mill of lead in a few places. It will have bog or spray bog in places to hide the gravel rash anyway so will not be 100% filler free anyway. Taking into account 300 hours would mean about 5 years to straighten just the panels.
Plus epoxy, primer, paint and multiple rounds of sanding.
300 hours my arse!
Add it up. From tapping out every dent, wiping and leading, straightening, filling, epoxy, primer, paint and multiple rounds of sanding
@@davesclassicgaragetours If you are charging 300 hrs for that, then your business licence should be revoked.
I know where one those is on blocks
What number cobra is it? 302 or 351, manual or auto. How can you be restoring a Mach 1 mustang when you don’t know that Mach 1 refers to speed.
Wonders never cease.
From the internet: The Mach 1 name is taken from the term used to denote when something is travelling at the speed of sound. Ford had first used the Mach 1 badge on the futuristic Levacar concept, first shown in 1959. I have a 69 and 70 Mach 1, my 69 is also green, from the factory, love the color !!
To get it where you use hardly any filler, I can see it taking long. Labour of love
I think it's a total waste of money. It's scrap.
To much bog dust 😂😂😂
I love watching the restoration of classics cars on UTube. I am a true blue Holden man ( love my HQ vans) but make no mistake I love the old Fords, Mopars as we had the best era in cars from the 50s to the 80s. So happy they are all coming back to show this generation what they missed out on. Can’t compare the cars of today to those from our era. No comparison!
7.5 weeks full time on the LR guard… would not want to disrespect the guy, but…….I’ll change my mind if they video all the hours and prove that’s what it really takes…. Otherwise I’ll just assume he’s taking the P
If a clean sheet of metal takes 100 hours to form into a rear 3/4 filler side panel by the most respected supplier of hardtop panels in Australia, can you not see 300 hours in the process of stripping the car of paint, taking out every knock, lead wiping and filling, and all the techniques used today to epoxy, prime and paint not to mention the multiple sanding backs to get the perfect finish of a battered and bruised 45 year old car. Or do you think it’s just a matter of 20kgs of bog and a long weekend?
What a swindler 🫠
Is there going to be any more videos on this VL Turbo Commodore
Afraid not fella. All my videos are just me passing by
Great footage regards from Jolly Club GB.
Birmingham not Solihull.... when he's chatting about the 86"
My forman til lme three hundred hour on that! he would have got the sack a rediculoues Aussie cowboy .
You realise when there’s a red dotted line under a word it means you’ve spelt it wrong don’t you? When you’ve assembled a coherent sentence, get back to me.
Absolutely stunning attention to detail through Grand Tourer, no one gets things this right in the Holden scene. Im predominately a GM guy, but love anything Aussie and US muscle, id love to take a tour of this shop.
Great bunch of lads as well.
That's a lot of cars in 1 workshop, they've obviously got a good reputation. That Cobra is a massive job, credit to whoever repairs it.
They are a talented bunch that’s for sure.
Howard Astill knows more about repairs from xb xc cos he's been there for many yrs I think was more 2- 3 yrs do 1 car spot on
New subscriber here!! really awesome DINO restomod! super cool..That is exactly the kit that I want to build..I am in Pennsylvania so that guy he is talking about is pretty close to me...I have been looking for a VW bug that I can strip and rebuild the pan from the bolts up and build a 959 on with a turbocharged VW or Corsair engine in it..I have been sourcing metal working and woodworking machines to start the build of my 1928 Morgan/GN special hillclimb racer .. I am going to start by posting videos on the sourcing of the machines and then continue to the first build...Thank you for sharing such awesome information and a great builder..-John
Thanks, follow the build over on the DDO channel
