How to rig lips in Blender - Part 2/3 | Intermediate level Tutorial
Here's the second part of a tutorial on how to rig lips in Blender !
Part 3 coming soon 👍
This tutorial is not for beginners. I try to explain the steps as much as possible but you'll have an easier time following it if you already know the basics of rigging in Blender.
This technique has worked for me so far, but I can't guarantee you'll get results similar to those in the tuto. It really depends on your character's anatomy, topology, the weight painting job and the rest of the face rig.
I tried to slow the pacing down a bit, but do not hesitate to pause or slow it down if it's still too fast 😅
Constructive feedback is welcome ! I'm still learning and trying to figure out a good tuto formula to stick to.

i didnt check in detail but man this is one of the greatest lip rigs id follow for sure
thanks for the tuts man, wanted to to know if you can do another one on how to do a cheek puff manual facial rigging stuff is hard to find on blender
Thankyouuu
You deserve so much more for teaching this for free. Cant wait for part 3 ^^ Btw if you ever create a paid course I would 100% buy it youre such a expert
Thanks a lot 😁
How would you make so the tongue stays on the bottom of the mouth when opening?
You just need to parent the base bones of the tongue (first deformation bone and CTRL-Base) to the jaw controller of your character's rig
@@rakenvalnot working for me, when I open the mouth the def bone and the ctrl base move making the base of the tongue go to the other side of the throat and the tongue doesn’t stays fully on the lower part of the mouth, it goes with the motion but doesn’t stay in the same position,it start just below the teeth and when fully open it’s above them
Hmm it could be due to multiple reasons, I can't seem to reproduce a similar issue on my rig I would unparent the tongue from the jaw, make sure the Master Controllers are parented to the Base Controller, and rotate it to see if the whole tongue moves as one (except for the first deformation bone that could stretch depending if it's parentyed to the base or not, it's ok it dosen't matter). If it does move "as one", then it probably dosen't come from the tongue rig. If it dosen't move "as one", you'll have to recheck the parenting hierarchy, and if the Hooks modifiers of the curve are working correctly. I can't really guess what the exact issue is since I don't know your whole rig Sometimes it can also be a weight painting issue, but I doubt it is the case here If you have multiple jaw bones (def, mechanisms, controllers...), maybe some will work better than others
@@rakenval ok, know it works, after remaking to see if I miss anything, I didn't anything, there are a few more that need to be parented to the jaw, the MCH_FK_loc_tongue.001and CTRL_IK_tongue.001 and both first deformation bone and CTRL-Base, the problem I had was the system use to stretch the FK chain was been left behind and the MCH_FK_loc_tongue.001 was the source of my problems, now i have different problem that been the scale, when i scale in FK and change to IK the scale stays and then if i scale in IK i'm scalling over the scale made in FK
Thankssss
this would do great if it had some sort of speech pattern tech behind it. If it mouthed letters from a speech. Or even if it worked with rokoko or something I've been dreaming about both. glad to see this implication tho
Yeah, the only automatic lip sync tech I've seen so far required Shape Key-based rigs (but I admittedly don't know a lot of them). I'm more interested in manual posing/animation though.
this work for all model low poly
I assume you need a minimum amount of topology for it to look good but otherwise yes
Christ. Can simulating the new hair system be so fucking complicated?
I'm sure they'll add a built-in hair simulation for it eventually
keep uploading sir
I will 👍
very good content
Waoooooooooo You are the Best 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Incredible work! Gonna try and integrate this into my own rig! Cant wait for part 2!
thanks! I aim to upload part 2 wednesday night or thursday 👍

спасибо for the support ! And you're welcome (I'm sorry I don't know any other russian word 😅)
Мак Высер вновь сменил род деятельности ❤
very nice! does the alt click, to affect all bones, not work anymore on the deform button?
As long as you hold it at the same time as you click, it should still work 👍 But tbf this one is easy to miss It works on almost every type of value or option, as long as it shares the same name and / or number as the rest of the selected bones (or objects)
@@rakenval tysm for your response!!
Ok your rigs are so amazing like i love your stuff, your shading is also SO AMAZINH WHDISHOSJS!! I was wondering where or how did you learn a lot of your rigging skills??? I really want to learn to make my own rigs at some point, and was hoping maybe i could get a few pointers!
Thanks 😄 I started learning with the first course "The art of effective rigging" from P2Design a while ago, also read "A complete guide to character rigging for games" by Armin Halac, both are really good for beginners and will give you a solid base. P2Design yt channel has really good tutos too. But at this point most of my skills come from experimenting when building rigs on my own. Practice is the best way to learn and come up with your own techniques 👍
I really would Like to know how u rotated the dublicated curves so good
I'm sorry I'm not sure I understand the question 😅
My dublicated Curves are not rotating that much Like yours…just a lil angel
Do you mean you can't bend them as much with the comb brush ? Maybe you do not have enough curve points ?
@@rakenval no the dublicated Curves…are rotated…in your case in some cases 90 degress…in My Case they only rotate in 25 degress?
@@rakenval I found only the Way to Select all Curves. Copy them on the same Place and then Rotate them with Ctrl-T....Did u make it with this Way?
Thanks for the free textures my mate
This channel has potential! so how about the bendy curve and stretch constraints how can I mimic those when I export my character to unreal?
I've absoluetly no idea, I'm sorry 😅 I know unreal allow for alembic export for hair grooms but when it come to simulations, I've never tried so I don't know how it works
im in blender 4.0, i add a empty hair and nothing shows up in sculpt mode
That's normal, you just need to add strands with the Add brush or the density brush
@@rakenval na, after i add a hair empty and go to sculpt mode it doesnt show hair tools like in the video, it shows sculpt tools
@@Bryce-s4pAh, make sure you're going in Sculpt Mode for the empty hair object, not the surface mesh
@@rakenval not working bro, im telling you. im doing what your doing and not seeing the same thing.
well then I don't know I'm sorry, it's kind of hard to guess just like that, with blender a million things can go wrong😅 But if you're seing regular sculpt tools, either you're definitely not in the empty hair object, or this is a bug I'm unaware of
Possible tutorial in the future? 😄
Probably not, at least not on this one 😅
Bro I don’t have any idea how hard I tried to find a good tutorial like this, thank u 🩷
why sooo speed video whyyyy!
I'm sorry it was what worked best for me 😅 You could slow it down and follow the subtitles maybe
@@rakenval 😘
Wow this is amazing.....how did you make the wings retractable......did u create a shape key and minimize the wing in the body
All the bones from the Wing rig are scaled down and folded thanks to an Action constraint, no shape key required ^^ The hair curves used for the small coverts are also shortenned with a Trim modifier and a driver (otherwise they stick out of the back)
When bro opened his mouth, I had had to shit myself
Fantastic rig! Did you fully create the model yourself too? The texturing is done well! Would love to see how you accomplish that.
Thanks, yes the model's mine 😄 In a nutshell it's handpainted (well except for the hair ofc), plus toon shaders I don't think I'll make a tuto on how to fully recreate it but maybe I'll post some techniques or a creation timelaspe in the future
@@rakenval sweet! no worries about making a whole tut. Either way the texturing on your models only come second to your rigging, can't wait to see what else you do!
Amazing work! Would love to see a rigging tutorial!
Thanks ! Maybe in the future !
Why are you make tutorial video or course video? If you make couse, i will buy your course
I'm thinking about it, either a full course or a short tuto per technique, I don't know yet
@@rakenval I have been using and learning blender for 3 years but your artworks is really very nice, i have not ever seen this quality rigging work. please make rigging course...
This is soo good! I would love to follow a tutorial how you rig a character or crearure.
Thanks ! A tuto for the whole thing is a huge task, and while I'm thinking about doing more tuto/courses I've no idea when it'll be 😅
si this cycles? how are you getting that painterly feel to it ? i know its off topic by i love the style and the character design. great work
I think this is in EEVEE.
Thanks ! It's Eevee, textures are hand-painted and the material uses a toon shader
Dude, you're a Rigging god. Truly incredible, especially the colour quality of the models, truly incredible.
thanks a lot !
Amazing!
one for the ladies...am i right eh? Eh?
my brain just exploded
Amazing setup! Helped me with simmulating full on spartan helmet hair with the proxies. The result is amazing and so epic! I adjusted the Pin group so that more of the hair segments are pinned to achieve this "stiff look", and so that only the tips of hair are moving with animation and physics. Thank You for this video!
Looks good, but what kind of mantis is that? Never seen one with this kind of antennae...
Thanks It's a fantasy made-up mantis 😄
damn, i would love a tutorial, nice bag
👏
this is so good! hope u go into more detail for this style of hair/feather tutorial in the future. Ill take me a week, but this seems like an insanely useful method :)
bro. blender's interpolate hair curves not working with this. is that normal? Fixed. The geometry node will go after the interpolation node. and then it works.
Yep, the node converting curves into cards must always be at the end of the stack, because after turning the curves into meshes they loose their curve status and cannot be affected by hair modifiers anymore
Hey man, your tutorial is great, there's only one thing I would have hoped to make work and there's probably just a little tweak to do, but I'm a geometry node newbie: instead of having only one plane controlled by the curve (or a tube) I am trying to have 3 planes set together in one mesh (that technique people use to have volume on your hair card is setting up a couple of them in a sort of triangle shape). I tried to do that but instead, the curve only randomly chooses one of the three planes to place on the curve. How would you achieve that with your geometry node system ? Thanks
With this specific technique that would be more complicated to achieve, as it relies on the planes and the curves to have the same amount of vertices / same index numbers I've been working on a new technique that allows you to have whatever mesh you want on the curves, no matter the point count and indexes, but in the meantime, I'd recommend to either use three curves instead, with one plane per curve (you can tweak the tilt manually in edit mode with ctrl T) But if you're feeling like learning more about geonodes, I can also recommend the channel of ErindDoes, he has a great tutorial about deforming meshes along curves with geonodes, maybe it'll help you achieve what you want
@@rakenval Thanks for your quick answer. Even though I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean, I'll try making that, and watch Erindoes' tutorials as well. Thank you :)
this is awesome, how did you learn rigging? university? Or did you learn from other courses? i would love to learn this but i unfortunately don't have the funds to go back to full blown college if that's the case. i know p2 design has a well regarded rigging course. I just always feel i'm at the mercy of auto riggers that don't have good constaints or drivers so it's a pain to actually animate. anyways fantastic job!
Hey, thank you very much ! I started learning with the first rigging course from P2Design, then completed it with youtube tutorials and books. It also took a whole lot of experimenting on my own. Once you know the basics from courses and tutos it becomes easier to build you own mechanisms, even if it still requires a lot of trial and error
@@rakenval which books and tutorials you watched after? I'm learning rigging with the P2Design course but the stuff you have done seems so much more advanced
I can't really tell you the tutos because it's been a while since I've started learning and I've watched a bit of everything, I only know for sure that I reused part of the technique from the IK dog leg rigging tuto from P2Design. The books were the Anatomy for sculptors collection (not about rigging, but anatomy is super important for bone placements and undertsanding of the movements the rig is supposed to achieve), and "A complete guide to character Rigging for games using Blender" by Armin Halac, you may have already heard of this one if you follow P2Design tuts. Great one for beginners, and even more advanced riggers can find interesting stuff in there. But you won't find techniques similar to those I used on the mantis in the books. I've been buidling rigs on my own for like 2 years now, practice is the key to make more advanced custom mechanisms 👍
