I enjoyed your video. So sad that Tobias Peak was lost in the fire. Lots of great memories there. Love your images from there.
Oh no!?! Awful. I'm really glad to have spent time there and document it. It's so sad that these fire lookouts are slowly succumbing to these fires....
what kind of mpg's are you getting? I am debating the exact same set up
Lol It's bad... 9 city & 12 to 13 hwy.
@@BackcountryPassportgood lord. Lol. Yikes
@@BackcountryPassport how has it been off-roading? Has size or length become an issue? Is there places you haven’t been able to get to that you would with the PW?
@ivanvujosevic289 it's great on easy to moderate trails. Size does matter for offroading. So depending on your use case mid size vs full size can make a difference. I needed the space and so that was a compromise I was willing to take. My gladiator can and take on almost everything... except for camping gear and a family of 5 with a dog!
What year is your PW? Very beautiful truck!
Thank you!! It's a 2022 that I got in 2023
F L E X
so you gotta air your tires down to get that truck outta the garage? that is a tight fit lol
Hahahah, no kidding. It's got maybe an inch or 2 of clearance 🤔 😆
I use a product called Jet sleds to organize my rear bed area. I use 2 large on the bottom and 3 mediums on the top layer. They work like a double decker drawer or decked system for only about $300 and they have elastic covers so no dust gets in. They slide in and out easy as they are designed to remove big game along the ground. Great video.
Thank you! I will definitely check those out. Do you have a pic or video of your setup??
Pictures but no videos
Bro now I have to buy this 😢 - love the vid
It's trouble man! 😆 🤣
This is not Jean Lafitte National Park, it's nearby, but there's no commercial airboating or feeding of wildlife allowed in the park. It does the park a disservice to title this video so, because it gives people the impression that anything goes in National Parks.
Really nice video. I had an '85 royal blue and silver Trans Am. Fully loaded. I really miss that car and the t-tops!
Thank you! 20+ years ago, I almost bought an '87 TA 2 tone blue with silver trim. I still have the ad somewhere... I'll have to post it on my community page early next week.
Trademan with power wagon package. Seats 6 and around 50 gs on sale if you watch. Gets you into a piwer wagon cheaper. Then modify.
Love the tradesman. It's great they still have that option!

Very cool experience to share with your daughter, thanks for taking us along!

How has the wind noise been with the habitat on the freeway?
Compared to my gladiator on MTs it's like limo quiet 😆 I haven't noticed much when I added the Topper, but again coming from a Jeep I might be skewed a lil
Awesome content, love it !! I just went out today and explored a little past the first gate on foot. Were pretty local to the area but its been closed for as ling as i can remember. Family of five over here and we all ride. Ages 6-33 :)) Wondering how far the first campsite is ? I know 4x4 is recommended but during a dry season do you see it being necessary// have you ever NEEDED to use it lol ?? And lastly, any water holes up there ? Cheers & Happy Trails
Thanks! I think you could make it in the dry season if you have like a 2wd truck or a vehicle with a Lil more ground clearance. Or if you have low ground clearance being selective on the lines and don't be afraid to turn around if you're by yourself. Hope that helps!
Welcome Aboard, cant replace the space you get. The truck far more capable than the General Public is aware of.
Thanks and you are definitely proof of that capability! Long time sub of your channel!
I did the same thing - went from a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon (Had a 21 Willys before the 23 I got) and needed something with more towing capacity/payload - not quite as much as a typical 2500 - so I got a 24 Power Wagon with Ramboxes (not sure what/if any topper options I have with that) - LVL2 equipment group was cool to see it came from the factory with a warn zeon 12s winch and all the rubicon jeep stuff (disconnecting sway bar/lockers front and rear).
Awesome 👌 I don't know if you can do a topper but there might be rack options for you!
Have you noticed the boats that look abandoned along the water itself, mostly (I think) on the Vallejo end of 37? When the water is flat at sunset with high tide covering the area between, from the road you can get a mast lined up with Mount Tam and both reflected. Needs a boat to get to the boats as far as I can tell. Just surveying that shore with a drone would probably be interesting, throw in biology from the preserve folk with ghost ships, and it'll sell like halloween pizza.
Interesting... I'm always looking for excuses to get the drone up!
Thanks for the click bait
👍
Congratulations to your new rig! My wife and I have outgrown our JLUR and I had my eyes set on a JTRD for better range and payload. After checking out a PW recently and we felt in love with the space it offers. What kind of mpg / range do you get with your current set up?
Thanks! The space is amazing the range and mpg is awful 😖 bigger tires and a Topper don't help but right now, 9mpg in the city and 13mpg highway. If you want range/mpgs, check out the half ton diesels like the Chevy trailboss.
When will people learn that adding music to MOTORSPORT drives away people from watching? LET THESE ENGINES BE HEARD!
👍
Nice! I’ve ordered a 2024 PW. I’m not sure how I’m going to rig it up yet. I want to take my two grandsons gold panning in BC. Some natural hot springs and some fishing and hiking. RTT or just a tent on the ground.
That sounds like all the things I love doing and have made videos on! I am NOT a big fan of RTT, but I do like my Habitat to be able to stand in my tent. IF I didn't have it I would be sticking with ground tents like my Shiftpods.
@@BackcountryPassport what is a Habitat?
@@Kanakid the AT Habitat is what I have on the back of my PW. Here's a link: atoverland.com/pages/at-habitat-truck-topper
Nice! I currently have 3 wranglers and been thinking of gladiator for long time perfect truck/jeep but than the size just the space to accommodate everyone as my kids are now older too. And I just got my 24 pw a month ago and so glad we did wow it’s comfortable.
Great minds think alike! So comfortable and quiet to take phone calls, unlike my Gladiator on 37s, lol. The PW is very upgradable too... I will be posting on them once I get through my Hammers series!
Nice video man. If you don’t mind. Do you have coordinates to the spot overlooking clear lake??
I think this is it... where I had the drone going? 39.12318, -122.77602

@@BackcountryPassport yea I think so. Time stamp 12:28
Welcome to the PW family!
Thanks!
I'm building a 1952 Dodge M37, I think I'll bring it here for testing, I was wondering what this place was like. I live in West Marin. I'm doing a diesel swap soon, just getting parts. We finished some WWII wheels and got some 40" Michelin XZL on them so it should eat this up.
If it's got 40s you'll have no problem. The obstacle course or the waterfall area is maybe the only spots that might challenge you. Sounds like you've built up a beast of a rig. Post a pic if you can?
Best thing he did was get rid of that piece of shit Jeep😂😂😂😂❤
Lol, that Jeep can probably take me farther than whatever you got 🤣
Man. Not a fan of that new Defender. Never would've happened to the LX.
I get it. To the defender's credit, the driver was looking back at the trailer instead of the big rock that high centered him. 😆
Any vehicle can get high centered.
The hot springs was a functioning Talc mine up into the 70s .It has to much asbestos in the area so be carefull of the dust. The big swimming pool was all hot water into the 90s and later.used to be many more buildings there. The geo cabin used to be so quite not sure it needed sound the silence is so pure out their till the jets come by..thanks for the video i just hope people dont destroy the place.
Thank you for the interesting context. It's a great spot and I hope people keep it that way!
I have a ‘21 PW and just ordered a GFC for it and my family, I can’t wait! Nice to see videos of PW overland set ups.
Awesome! I love the GFC, but my family is too big for one!
@@BackcountryPassportthinking of trading my Gladiator in for the exact reason. Any thoughts or regrets now that you’ve had the PW for a while? Would you do it again? Miss the gladiator?
@GYMGUYFE the gladiator is a more capable offroader than the PW due to the sheer size of an HD truck. However, if you need the size for family overlanding, the PW is a no-brainer! Other bonuses of the PW is a quieter interior and a full size pick up bed to do pickup things. Hope that helps!
Yes. Get a CO detector. It went off in our hunting cabin.
Yeah, I would not use a buddy heater without one!
Those were some nice fish you guys got, reminds me of Eagle Lake trout.
I'm going to have to get to Eagle Lake one of these days soon!
Nice trout fishing! We did not make it to Lake Crowley/Owens River that Nick recommended. Most definitely love to try. Nice video ❤ 1-2-3 Dzô cheer ❤❤
Thanks! How far north did you guys make it??
@BackcountryPassport We made it to Lake Tahoe. The plan was to stop at Owen's River fishing on the way back, but we ran out of time.
@hdoan0001 too much to see and not enough time ;)

Awesome!!
Aren’t you suppose to wet your hands before handling trout?
Crap… you’re right… thank you. Amateur hour on our side. I just found this link for those that want more info on the subject: fishingwithbait.com/why-wet-your-hands/
One thing that concerned me about a Habitat or Canopy that retains the tailgate is the dust ingestion in the bed area. Do you have a lot of trail dust build up?
Correct dust will be an issue. I did add a felt barrier to the tailgate and that did help. I have a blower and after I stop I can blow the dust out easily. Also consider the holes and gaps to let water drain thats in every truck bed. What solutions are you looking at that could do better with keeping dust out?
@@BackcountryPassport All that you said is a great start, I've seen where people add some type of barrier at the tailgate hinge as well. For me I'm considering an Ali-Cab where the gate is replaced with a vertical door.
@TheUnorthodoxx the alu-cab is a great system. Doesn't it have a negative pressure vent to help with dust? I needed more space for the fam so the alu-cab, GFC, etc wasn't going to happen for my setup.
@@BackcountryPassport I don't think it has negative pressure, just a sealed door because it replaced the tailgate
So jealous of the nature in California. Definitely on my bucket list.
Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. About a 6 hour drive can get you into all different kinds of terrains/climates.
I watched again today, you guys are brilliant!
Hahah that's great 👍
Your problem is your at higher elevation which changes the burn air/fuel mixture and your not even vented at all , your oxygen sensor tripped because there is less oxygen at higher altitudes , it failed because you dont know how to properly use a propane heater at higher altitudes and rather than say it , you blame the heater !
I have had others experience this in another insulated tent. Properly piped diesel heater or wood burning stove is far superior!
Ok i see a few dont know 0-25 is a safe level for Carbon Monoxide, also tanks have a purge valve so dont store the tanks inside or enjoy being on the end of a blow torch, and always crack a window for fresh oxygen and to vent any gases away safely .
That makes sense. I think my tent is too insulated and so it struggles to get fresh oxygen.
Alabama Hills a beautiful place! Looks like you guys are enjoying the beauty!
What a great spot, right?
@BackcountryPassport Very nice place! I will never forget it! Hope to visit it again in the future Matt & Nick ❤️
@@hdoan0001 sounds great 👍
Nice! I have never camped in Alabama Hills and now I hear they have designated camping areas and it's awfully crowded for my blood. I've heard about the Reward Mine but never visited it either, thanks for the tour!
Thanks! You definitely have to try to get to harder to reach places in Alabama Hills to get a Lil seclusion. If you're around reward mine, I would definitely take a detour to visit!
Do you have the coordinates for that camping spot or directions? How to get there? I want to go this November.
Come in from Indio off Dillon Rd. The best campsites are within a mile from the entrance of Joshua Tree NP. No shooting in the park and camping is only in designated areas. Outside of the park the world is your oyster, but just try to clean up after yourself. Or you can camp in the north on BLM land off old dale rd like my original Joshua Tree videos. That’s near 29 Palms. Hope that helps!
