The engine, frame and in particular the 6 speed gearbox and even the suspension on this bike is so super tight when brand new that it can be seriously discouraging for the first 599 miles and it can be difficult to remain patient with your 11k stock bike while it is vibrating your brain around in your skull just sitting on it and then trying to kill you every chance she gets when you ride it. But this bike runs and rides like a dream once it is well broken in and I love just listening to the motor idle like a Swiss watch while letting it warm up. For example both my hands would go seriously and painfully numb every ride for the first 600 miles but after that it has not even come close happening again so just imagine how many pro taper bars were purchased for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I almost feel guilty now for owning the most comfortable thumper on the road and which I never really even expected from this bike but I am definitely very grateful to Honda for it. You hear this advice over and over again about this bike- Go put 800 miles on it before you buy anything except for a seat, a gallon of oil and a couple of oil filters. Yeah don’t fight that stock seat it will win every time.

Good stuff! I agree with you on the front fairing. There is so much more wind noise with the fairing. I kept mine for 2 reasons: I tuck in when we hit the road in cold weather AND it holds my tablet/GPS. I agree with you about the ECU as well. You don't have to have it, BUT if you're doing tight trails, the throttle/flame outs will wear you out until you give into the upgrade. If I rode the bike mostly on road, I would not have gotten the ECU.

You have a similar opinion to myself about people carrying on about the way these dual sports are tuned from the factory. Bunch of it out there for the KTM brands as well. There is truth to the fact that the bikes are detuned to meet regulations. However, they are not unrideable. A competent rider can get it done stock, and if you want to tune it the support is there. Pick a bike and roll my friends.

Exactly, a pipe and a tune made this bike ride way different but that doesn't mean these bikes aren't amazing out of the box. Hopefully you ktm is treating you well as I was on the fence as well but went with the CRF.

Nice. I had a 2021 250RX. I made it street legal but it wasn't really happy as a "dual sport". But I loved it so much, I got the closest thing to it for the road, the CRF450L. I already watched your 450 video. I bet if you took the 450 out on those same trails, it would make riding the 250RX out there even easier. There was a lot of overlap with those two bikes, although the 250 was much easier in tight, technical stuff, so I traded my 250 for a 2-stroke. But I would be lying if I said I never missed the 250RX. Mine was the last of the twin exhaust CRFs. It sounded amazing. The 2 stroke I got is the Beta XTrainer. It is super easy to ride. It's given me enough confidence and all that I wish I could ride a 250RX again. It was too much bike for me at the time, to be honest, and I was intimidated by it. I feel like if I still had it, I'd be much better on it now. Any way, enjoy your CRFs. They are awesome bikes!

Definitely, after the ECU and the pipe the 450 turns into a lug machine. The 250 is my cross country race bike and I was doing a casual break in ride on it. I'll do a race on it soon and see how it truly performs.

I have a 2019 CRF450L and it was really bad for single track before I got the AIM ECU. It would flame out any time when rolling off the throttle, in a really bad way, off road and on the street. It was seriously pretty dangerous whenever I first got the bike. Now it's great. I use my CRF450L as a daily commuter and I take it out on tight, technical single track. With my ECU, I got the switch to go from full power mode to enduro mode and it truly does make a big difference. I forgot to switch to enduro mode last time I took the bike out to the woods and I was stalling all over the place. Then I remembered to switch to enduro mode and didn't stall again. Also, I owned a CRF250RX at the same time and I'd ride them both back to back on the same trails. I no longer have the 250RX and I some times miss it.

I mainly ride double track with this so nothing too extreme and I haven't noticed flame outs to the extreme of most people. I'm excited to try the aim ECU, got a nice FMF to pair it with. My 250rx however I love it, it's great for the type of racing I do and makes for a good trail bike. I'll probably do a review on it once I hit the 10-15 hour mark.

I really kind of wish I would have gone with a CRF RL over the KLR, I thought I would be riding on the road more than I do, I really dislike riding on the road..... But... IDK... the 6 gallon tank is nice, the 400 lbs and 40 hp isn't great.

    • @The450Kid

The klr is an awesome for dirt roads and touring. There's definitely some headaches you have to get over with the 450 vs the klr, like uncomfortable seat, small gas tank, wind on the highway.

@@The450Kid Yeah, I have the Risers on my wind screen on the highest setting which really gives it a Rally look, and I have the Eagle Mike Fork Brace. I was surprised that the gearing is such that when you are in the power you go into 5th gear at about 70mph. Its pretty stable on the interstate but here the 80mph speed limit is just at the limit of my feeling comfortable, it does it fine with limited shakes but the vibes aren't great. The mirrors are rock solid so its very high freq vibes but it will make your hands numb even when you are holding the handlebars very lightly. It cruises fairly comfortable at 70 mph and it will pass at 80-90 fine. With enough weight on it (IE my hard paniers with Tools and Tire spoons etc etc a decent gust of wind on the interstate will make you poop your pants. The Adv LED lights on the Gen 3 are great for watching the ditches for deer and whatnot, but they would be a whole lot better if they were adjustable. I used to ride dirtbike with light mounted to my helmet and that is actually really nice because the light is where you look. When I first got it, I would ride 50 - 55 on gravel roads and felt fine but one time I hit a patch of soft stuff and that weight on the front tire can be very bad, I luckily had just enough power to hammer the throttle and get just enough weight off the front tire that I didn't go down, but just barely. And off road when you hit deep sand or base course it just sinks. I haven't been able to get over 40 on the gravel mostly because at 35 you are just right in the power band that you can hit the throttle and get out of a mess but after that I slow down. I am just new to such a heavy bike. Watching videos of pro level riders just throwing around a KLR is very deceptive, it takes a lot of practice to get there. One thing I am really struggling with is what tires to go with. I already don't like the vibes at speed. but I really want better traction off road. One thing I didn't complain about or think was any big deal with the ABS, because it does lock up for a second, but then I went on some single track with my 13 y/o on his dirtbike and I couldn't keep up because I couldn't use the rear brake the way I do on my dirtbike to start a slide around a corner. Anyway.. I like the KLR a lot, but its going to take a lot of practice to get good on it.

Yea I honestly hated my klr... I felt like it's so under powered for it's size..if it had like 20 more HP and tq then it'd be a great bike. It's just too heavy for the power.

@@aboveworld8209 I put a delkavic 8” carbon fiber exhaust on the klr and modified the airbox and got a lot better power, waiting on a better option for the fuel mapping, as it is though at least it will pick the front tire up without the clutch, which.. Im not doing wheelies but for logs, bumps etc I feel like that is important. I also put a fork brace on it, and now 75 mph even with 20 mph winds is comfortable. The weight still kills it on gravel. On my mx bike I can do 60 mph on gravel no problem, on the klr you get over 40 and it feels really shifty. I am kind of happy I went with the KLR over the Africa Twin, just so I have a better Idea what Im getting into, but I think after a few years on the KLR I will be ready for the Africa Twin and I will have an idea what to expect. Really wish that Honda would start making the xr650r again… Seems like the undisputed king, a real shame they don’t make it anymore.

did you have the valves checked at 1800 miles?

I had them checked at the break in service and at 1800 miles. No adjustments needed at all. I'll check them again when it has trouble starting.

With the REALLY mild camshaft on the L vs the R bikes I don't expect them to ever need adjusted. There is Slaugo here on TH-cam that has over 30k miles on his and never needed to replace parts during the top end tear down. Hasn't needed to shim the valves either and he's not nice to the bike at all.
