Cutlass Bearings | WHEN to REPLACE & HOW TO GET THEM OUT! (Ep. 99)
Replacing the cutlass bearings on our Aluminium Crowther Catamaran.
What are cutlass bearings? What do they do and how often should they been replaced? We are answering all these questions in todays video.
We have dropped our rudders, taken the props off, and the shafts out and we are now on the job of replacing our cutlass bearings. These bearings didn't want to come out first go, they were in there good, we took the heat gun to the outside to loosen up the epoxy and they slid out like a charm.
Let us know in the comments what your thoughts are!

    I was quite surprised to realise that boats used such soft materials as cutlass bearings being used to shell bearings elsehere in machinery such as bronze or Delrin. Mind you alighnments a key issue with boats and ships especially with longer shafts .. HMS Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales have had a series of service problems due to a misalignment in the design construction process.

    Hi I think a larger diameter 2 bladed folding propeller will be more efficient and you will use less fuel. Vibrations from your jamming 3 blade one may have all ready damaged the shaft ,bearings, jointa or whatever.

    • @sailingwiththejamess
      @sailingwiththejamess 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you!💖 We had to go with three blade because of the skeg, with the two blade both would enter and exit the skegs at the same time causing vibration. We are doing the refit now to the boat, props and shafts are out, we will be relaunched with the new props and see how they are, really excited to have the new props on! 💗💗💗 -Cait

    • @tanyalove6983
      @tanyalove6983 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sailingwiththejamess There are so many possible causes of vibration in a drive system! It sounds like you've already eliminated many with the alignment of the engine and shaft. The two remaining ones that come to mind are the possibility of a some play in the cutless bearing or a combination of hull shape and prop diameter. I understand that if there is insufficient clearance between the prop blade tips (probably around an inch) and any part of the hull, the tip vortices can set up vibrations, obviously more so at speed or when accelerating hard.

    • @tanyalove6983
      @tanyalove6983 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sailingwiththejamess Given that you have eliminated any alternative, the most likely cause is an unbalanced propeller, two bladed are also more prone to generate turbulence and hence vibration. A propeller is like a car wheel, if unbalanced it will vibrate differently at different rotational speeds, and the vibration may disappear at some. If not folding, double check the vibration at different speeds also with a freewheeling propeller (engine stopped). If still present, then the diagnosis is confirmed.

    • @tanyalove6983
      @tanyalove6983 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The most important thing is that you do not overload your engine. There is a recommended RPM it should be run at I think at 3/4 throttle. If your rpm is below that at full throttle then you are overloading the engines so then you have to reduce the size or pitch of your propellors. If you are above the recommended RPM then you can go for larger diameter or more pitch. Anyway best wishes and good luck. Hope you can find a place to let you try out different propellors till you get the right diameter and the right pitch.

    • @sailingwiththejamess
      @sailingwiththejamess 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We don't get vibration, if we put 2 bladed props on they would cause vibration which is why we have gone with 3 bladed flexofold folding props. We're moving from feathering props to folding props. Very impressed with Flexofold Folding props, looking forward to doing some comparisons between the old and new props -Cait

      Its a good point you have and would definitely be useful overseas. We are AMSA and Queensland registered, it is a legal requirement here in Queensland, tenders do not need certificates if they are used for transporting goods or people between the shore and the parent ship and they must be marked with the word 'tender' and the parent vessel. If its not marked with T/T we can be stopped and smacked with a fine, and its easy enough for remove when overseas. I do see the idea and reasoning behind not having it, as it lets everyone know that some or all crew from a particular vessel are ashore. -Cait

    I was going to say the best tender is one that one person can lift and carry up a stony beach…but with a tin boat you can just drag it! One point, how about floatation? Have you done a capsize test? Enough to stop it sinking is often not enough to let you bale it out.

    • @sailingwiththejamess
      @sailingwiththejamess 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      One of the criteria when looking for a tinny was the two of us being able to drag it, we are also going to be making and endless loop anchor so we can go ashore in any tide and leave the dingy and do an endless loop. There is foam inside the two seats in the tinny, it was designed and made so if it does capsize it will have stay afloat, the tender collar gives it more stability when walking and moving around in the tender. We are super happy with all the improvements!

    I'm planning on building an aluminum catamaran and really like the OC Tender but they are over my budget so I'm planning on making my own design. It will be about a 12.7 meter lightweight tender with carbon fiber and I'll either do a foam core or honeycomb core. I've been thinking of incorporating those pod designs into my build and am really happy to hear that you've gained an extra 2 knots with yours. Those pods also help protect other boats from getting hit by the motor. I really like that extra buoyancy on the chimes. That's a really good idea and design. I'll have to think long and hard how I will make mine strong enough to handle a 20 hp. It would be supper nice if I could fit a 25 but that might be too much power. It should be a ripper. Thanks for the tips in design. I'll try to put them to good use.

      Awesome, best comments ever! We love hearing that people are finding our videos are useful and helpful! We Love the OC Tenders, they are great, we looked into it but they are out of our budget. We plan on building our own version of an OC tender down the road. The pods have extended the waterline length which contributes to the extra speed and also to the buoyancy. They have been super awesome with giving extra buoyancy with two people are the back of the boat. What is not pictured in any of the videos is a rod holder and we got a cabana umbrella at Spotlight for 60% off and for days out fishing and spending time out in the tinny and in the sun we can pop the umbrella open and have some shade, plus we can bring it to the beach and have shade during a beach day (dual purpose for everything!) Awesome Comment, thank you!!

      Sailing Teilu tribe put opening windows into their saloon deckhouse front windows ...they are in Mexico now but they put them in for their south America trip . Their boats a 40ft colvic ketch. Jibsea had to modify their Al tender to fit a new outboard but hit the clearence problem ..after cutting and welding.

      @@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 We went down the path of making opening windows, but we ran into a bit more complication and we decided to go with polycarbonate and hatches. The full opening windows are super cool (pun!) and they look awesome open, and they would let is a lot of airflow which is the object of them opening! -Cait

    Pool noodles, ours don’t last a season before they start breaking down. Perhaps some of the insulated lagging used by plumbers might be a better bet. Or cover the noodles with canvas, that might work. As a Territorian I’d not feel comfortable in an inflatable so it’s good to see you are using a tinnie, can we get a demo?

    • @sailingwiththejamess
      @sailingwiththejamess 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We've been talking about painting them with cheap paint or gluing some canvas onto the pool noodles. We have some canvas left over from the boombag project and the canvas would give the noodles great protection from the sun. When we were sailing though Hinchinbrook Island and going for exploration up the creeks it was really good feeling to be in the tinny with all the croocs around!! Next week's video is the sea trial - stay tuned!

    Dinghy looking good, pool noodles are a fail team. They are going to look like death in 5 mins, better off with alkathene pipe split and riveted on if you want something rounded and less damage inflicting. Alkathene pipe riveted on will also look like death but itd last at least. Video skills improving👍 Aways a good watch you 3⭐️

    Interesting comments regarding the Kiwi Props. We went with them on our performance cat because I liked many things about them including the weight which i believe has an affect on the sail drives which are on most cats. I have been disappointed with the thrust forward and have lost quite a bit of motoring power.

      Hey Clive, yeah we are right next to one of our earlier models. It's amazing how much the design has changed. The tunble home is much greater. There isn't a flat spot on the decks and the camber is quite extreme compared to today's standards. She has very proud bows, she would have been a very seaworthy vessel back in her day. -sam

    Should not touch fiberglass with bare hands .. it is made of glass and gets into your skin and you feel it but cannot see it.. I had some fiberglass rods for a CB radio arial and they were nasty stuff to work with. (making what was called a box quad for long distance receiver/transmitter when 27 mg was the in thing. lol) (shows how old I am ) Thanks for the video.
