At this stage we hope that the sterns are in the water and that would mean that they won't slap. I an hoping that the sterns are completely water tight and that would mean that we won't need any foam for buoyancy. Cheers for the suggestions though. -sam
Hi guys, another interesting video. Those stern platforms will make a big difference to your ease of getting on and off and are great for reversing onto a dock. They are a common feature in newer cats. In your video you say you will be adding a whole load of new stuff on the back! More weight usually means slower boat. I am sure you know what you are doing and have done the calcs. The asymmetric hull shape was a bit of wishfull thinking from the designer. Lifting a hull on a 17 tonne cat would be a hairy experience! BTW congratulations to New Zealand retaining the Americas Cup. Your team was yet again in a class of its own although the gap is closing. It seems Britannia is the Challenger once again for the next round. Perhaps you should think about some foils! That would give you something to think about. (Just kidding) FYI the Dazcat boys added foils onto their rudders for extra performance....lots of engineeering and complex carbon work.£££££££ PS did you try the cardboard cutout exercise?
Hi Chris, thank you we are very happy with the sterns. I was doing the calculations for the sterns but unfortunately we came to the conclusion that we want the extra stuff for liability reasons so I would just have to make it work. I am lucky as we have great bug lockers foward and aft so I should be able to balance the boat out with them. A friend of mine put foils on his rudders and they did make a difference but our rudders and daggerboards are a bit clunky and there is so much I could do to improve them before going foils. I haven't tried the cardboard trick yet. We splash in a bit over 2 weeks and we are getting to the panic stage of trying to complete and finalise everything. I do hope to do it before we splash. -sam

I love how you don't jump into things, you take your time discussing what you want, the pros and cons and prioritizing what is more important. That is an outstanding addition to your boat. We aren't doing anything inside on those refit but we do have plans for the inside to come. There is more comming for the outside but we are down to the wire as we get launched in 3 weeks!
Interesting. With the extension I would be worried about buckling where extensions join the existing hull. That part of the hull is now carrying increased compression loads.
We increased the t bar in that section to counteract that. We also added a ring frame or baffle plate for strength. We made it so strong so we wouldn't need to extend the sides of the boat but if there is any signes of buckling then we will just extend the sides. -sam
Yes we are very happy with the extensions! The big platforms are excellent! We have the ladder there all the time so it is easy and if we unexpectedly go swimming then it is there ready to go. -sam
The 1 disadvantage will be when your in a marina and have to pay for the extra length of your Cat.. Great job by your welder, looks great. Thanks for the video.
They've come out beautiful! Great thought and good question! Did you re-insulate the area of the swim platforms? I noticed you had to chip away at the spray foam, at inside of the old sugar scoops. Nice work. It's so interesting your boat is not mathematically accurate in dimensions from starboard hull to port hull.
I have talked to a few alloy boat builder and they say it is fairly typical of older alloy boats. They just warp and buckle a bit and as English rolling is an inexact science any alteration is always better done by eye. -sam
Oh and we didn't insulate the pods. We did buy a small can of spray foam to replace the foam that we dug out for the welds and then used the rest of the can in the pods but there wasn't that much put in the pods.

Hi Frank I couldn't agree more, when we were organising the refit we couldn't get everything we wanted so we sat down and thought about the type of life we wanted to lead and everything that encouraged that stayed on the refit list and everything that didn't came off. So no air-conditioning or new TV sadly but heaps of other cool things. -sam

Not this time,, she's has the classic crowther flare on the bows which we love, a lot of the fiberglass versions of the Design 85's have the bulbous bows and they are 🔥👌 -Cait
Really nice work! Glad to see the extra bouancy to also replace the lift lost from chopping the skegs also. That was interesting to hear about the transom edge flat spot to get a cleaner release of flow for the wake. Reducing parasitic drag at the transom is important for light air multihull sailing & I learned that directly from Lock C. himself. But he never mentioned having a flat spot there. Is that a fairly recent development?
I learnt it from a friend of mine who races full time when he was on commanchi at Hamilton Island race week. It is important not to have it kicked down at all so if anything still the slightest rake up but it also allows us the have a hard edge which alo helps he water release from the transom. For our boat it isn't super important but just another thing that I want to play with and as it's all bare alloy at the moment it's not to hard to give it a go. Robin (the welder) offered to make the corner hard out of alloy but we opted for a standard stern in case it's not the best idea. -sam

Hello! Hello! Great questions! AMSA is the Australian Martime Safety Authority, we had to file paperwork with them for the new length. We are going from 15.24 meters to 16meters, in regards to marinas we were always in a 16m pen at 15.24m so nothing will change with marinas. With boatyards and shipyards it might be different as they normally charge by meter or foot so we might have to pay for the extra length on the hardstand. We are really excited about the new suagrscoops and getting relaunched shortly and using them! 👍🌼✨️ -Cait
@Sailingwiththejames's To Assist with added buoyancy did you consider a closed cell polyurethane foam? It comes in 2 parts that you mix and pour into the space and it expands to fill the voids. Dont shoot me if I am wrong I am no boaty just a wannabe boaty :)

@@sailingwiththejamess With the new 16 metre overall length, I guess the marina /haul cost will be the same in down under locations, as the boat was already longer than 15 metres prior to the modification. It will be interesting to see how the forward/aft balance goes with your sail plan? You should see ~0.25 knots of additional boat speed with lower stern drag and longer hull length, unless additional weight is also added.
We are hoping the costs will be the same. We could have gone slightly longer but brought it back to keep it in line with 16m. We are hoping for a bit more of a speed increase as we have brought the stern up to allow for the extra weight but yes sadly we are putting more weight on lol. -sam
Just a thought from a new admirer of your videos and thinking...If the extensions do slap too much at anchor in a bit chop, you could always make your stern bulkhead water tight and fill the transom cavities with closed cell foam as an option. Should they be ruptured or torn off somehow, they wont fill with water also. You could test one side first and record the sound difference? You wont be able to inspect for damage / leakage from the inside, but you can still inspect from the outside should you ever suspect damage?
It I'd a good plan, and I definitely think it would make things quieter. At this stage, they aren't slapping, but we keep on talking about getting lighter, so it may at some point. I have reinforced the sterns on tugs and it made reverse alot quieter. It's a good thought and suggestion my friend thank you. -sam
So true, The challenge you face with steel is that it pays about %10 of what alloy pay which means that instead of recycling at a cost neutral basis it would cost you money to recycle steel. In Australia old steel boats are a problem and the government has had to pay private contractors to clean up the old steel wrecks left in the rivers and creeks about the coastline. -sam

Hi Patriot! Cheers for the idea, but we have water tight bulkheads in the case of water ingress. I would personally prefer to keep the space open so that if the worst did happen and we started to sink that, I could see where it was coming from and hopefully deal with it. -sam
Step 1: How to start and extend your back of the boat, you start with buying a: mason's line. Then you tie it to the rudder end up against your boat so you don't have a cap between your ruder en boat with the cord, step 2: you make a 3 legged stand, now you let it stand after the boat further than you gone extend, now you can tie the mason's line cord to your 3 legged stand en and make sure you can adjust it up and down, because you have to align it to the upper end of the boat corner, now you have a perfect working line to make your extents' en it gone be even with your boat, now you can start with making a template. Hi kevin, Yes I can weld. We got our sterns miged and tiged which would have meant that I would have had to buy 2 machines and sticking old alloy to new alloy is a bit tricky. I am confident that I couldn't have done as good a job a Robin so we are very happy that we outsourced thus one. -sam
I am glad to see someone getting out of the box. I believe we have all been brainwashed into thinking that things have to be a certain way. I have saved every gallon of motor oil for over 20 years. The hurricane hit and we were cooking on wood. We were starting fires with a torch striker and alcohol. We pumped water by hand and ran our old backhoe on used engine oil. If you draw a one bar vacuum on water the temperature goes down to 36 degrees F or 4 degrees above freezing. The average air-con or refrigerator uses hundreds of pounds of pressure to cool. Our overlords don't want you to know this.

You should fill the inside of the extensione with fpoam to stop the slapping sound and also to create boyance lift inthe sterns.

This is turning out nice and clean. That swim platform ladder looks like an easy and safe way back on the boat. Even after a big long day exclamation.

Not it's a great idea, it would stop cait and I from filling the space with stuff which in turn is weight.

@@sailingwiththejamess With the new 16 metre overall length, I guess the marina /haul cost will be the same in down under locations, as the boat was already longer than 15 metres prior to the modification. It will be interesting to see how the forward/aft balance goes with your sail plan? You should see ~0.25 knots of additional boat speed with lower stern drag and longer hull length, unless additional weight is also added.
We are hoping the costs will be the same. We could have gone slightly longer but brought it back to keep it in line with 16m. We are hoping for a bit more of a speed increase as we have brought the stern up to allow for the extra weight but yes sadly we are putting more weight on lol.

Just a thought from a new admirer of your videos and thinking...If the extensions do slap too much at anchor in a bit chop, you could always make your stern bulkhead water tight and fill the transom cavities with closed cell foam as an option. Should they be ruptured or torn off somehow, they wont fill with water also. You could test one side first and record the sound difference? You wont be able to inspect for damage / leakage from the inside, but you can still inspect from the outside should you ever suspect damage?
It I'd a good plan, and I definitely think it would make things quieter. At this stage, they aren't slapping, but we keep on talking about getting lighter, so it may at some point. I have reinforced the sterns on tugs and it made reverse alot quieter. It's a good thought and suggestion my friend thank you.

steel is as easily recycled as aluminum...just dont get as much per lb for it

The challenge you face with steel is that it pays about %10 of what alloy pay which means that instead of recycling at a cost neutral basis it would cost you money to recycle steel. In Australia old steel boats are a problem and the government has had to pay private contractors to clean up the old steel wrecks left in the rivers and creeks about the coastline.

If your not going to use this rear add on as storage, I would put flotation foam in both of them.

Cheers for the idea, but we have water tight bulkheads in the case of water ingress. I would personally prefer to keep the space open so that if the worst did happen and we started to sink that, I could see where it was coming from and hopefully deal with it.

Step 1: How to start and extend your back of the boat, you start with buying a: mason's line. Then you tie it to the rudder end up against your boat so you don't have a cap between your ruder en boat with the cord, step 2: you make a 3 legged stand, now you let it stand after the boat further than you gone extend, now you can tie the mason's line cord to your 3 legged stand en and make sure you can adjust it up and down, because you have to align it to the upper end of the boat corner, now you have a perfect working line to make your extents' en it gone be even with your boat, now you can start with making a template. This looks familiar lol. Cheers for the comment l. I'm a firm believer in " if it doesn't look right then it probably isn't right. The bow and sterns always start from the centre of the boat and you need to look at the lines all the way to the centre.

Hi kevin, Yes I can weld. We got our sterns miged and tiged which would have meant that I would have had to buy 2 machines and sticking old alloy to new alloy is a bit tricky. I am confident that I couldn't have done as good a job a Robin so we are very happy that we outsourced thus one.

I am glad to see someone getting out of the box. I believe we have all been brainwashed into thinking that things have to be a certain way. I have saved every gallon of motor oil for over 20 years. The hurricane hit and we were cooking on wood. We were starting fires with a torch striker and alcohol. We pumped water by hand and ran our old backhoe on used engine oil. If you draw a one bar vacuum on water the temperature goes down to 36 degrees F or 4 degrees above freezing. The average air-con or refrigerator uses hundreds of pounds of pressure to cool. Our overlords don't want you to know this.
Modern Aircon systems and pumps have come a long way in the past 3-5 years. Ditto electric motors and fans .
Wow, I love been out of the box and wherever possible we try and give it a go.
