GEAR: Upgrading your Pump
EN: This is a comparison between s stock pump and the Olab silent green pump in the new Xenia Dual Boiler (DBL) machine. According to Xenia, while both pumps are pretty much the same volume when used in the Heat Exhange machine, the Olab silent green makes a significant difference in the DBL. in this video we will find out! Oh yes, there is also some footage of the upgrade process ;-)

      Hi @joesimpson4655, yes I did. I dialed in both espressos to roughly a 2-2,2:1 ratio in 25 to 30 seconds having grind size as the variable.

    • @simmesreviews

      @@KhoaNguyendz13 I can’t tell you an exact number. However I would always start with the recommended recipe of the roaster or if not available the standard recipe. So fix all variables you want to achieve, except grind size. E.g. standard recipe: take 18g of ground beans and aim to get 36g of espresso in 25 seconds. Now if the 36 grams came out to quickly, say in 20 seconds, you need to set your grinder to a finer setting. If it took to long, than set your grinder coarser. This should lead to a tasty espresso. From there you can adjust to your liking by aiming on a different ratio (e. 18g to 42g for a more balanced but watery espresso or the other way round for a more textured but probably bitter shot. Hope this helps

    • @simmesreviews

      Hi @lailahossman, I would say ratio depends on personal preference. It can be the same but doesn’t have to. I would not generally say, that there is a rule to use a different ratio just because it is Arabica or Robusta.

      To be honest I am currently using the 2 hole tip again. I have my steam boiler set on 1.5-1.6 bar. The 2 hole tip is more forgiving, as you have more time. I still love the 4 hole tip for its speed, but it needs you to be more present at what you do

    The ulka seams a bit quieter / smoother under load but much louder while getting there the olab seems to be quite the opposite. But as you mentioned noise isn't noise and some high pitched rattling sounds can be perceived louder / more annoying then lower frequency noises . Thanks for the video

      Thanks for your comment! I promise to continue to make videos… it just a lot going on right now. I feel the silent green is an improvement. But more so the upgrade of the Xenia to a Dualboiler system with the ability to regulate the pump. Turns out you can reach the needed pressure while running the pump at 70 to 80%… which in itself makes the machine more quiet

    • @Gk2003m

      Thanks for the vid! You’ve convinced me that the ever so slight drop in noise level is not worth the $20 or whatever needed to purchase, and then the labor necessary to install, the Silent Green pump.

  • @simmesreviews
    @simmesreviews ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Coffee Friends! I guess my conclusion may seem off, when you look at the numbers only… Of course it is difficult to capture real live sound… so some of it will be subjective of course. Also the dripping coffee amounts for some good part of the noise, too. I feel the absence of rattling is what makes it more quiet (at least subjectively).

    The Vortex with a 4 hole tip is hard to manage especially with smaller ammounts of milk. I had the 4 hole wand nailed at work but got a barista express machine for christmas. Since I did steam wit a single hole wand for days now I struggled hard today at work with the 4 holes, since it blows in sooo much air initially Making Espresso machiato milk is near impossible

    In croatia in cafees there is served mostly a blend of robusta and arabica, i got used to it and it tastes pretty good, i like how it has a nice crema from the robusta and its not so acidic like the arabica

    • @simmesreviews
      @simmesreviews 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @huhDisabo that is very common I think in many places. The reason is as mentioned by you the crema which many enjoy to see and also that robusta is a bit less expensive than arabica, so you can bring your costs per shot down. I also enjoy blends from time to time. I feel the combination of arabica and robusta also leads to a more diverse taste profile.

    If robusta have 4% caffeine content,and if i pull 18 gram espresso made of robusta bean, is that mean i got 720 mg caffeine in 1 double shot?

    • @simmesreviews
      @simmesreviews 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good question…. I am not an expert, but I think that extraction level is at around 20%. So I think a double shot with 18g of espresso in your example should have around 18g *4% *20% = 144mg of caffeine. However a more realistic caffeine level is around 1.2 to 2.2% This link might answer your question coffeebros.com/blog/how-much-caffeine-is-in-espresso-and-coffee-hint-its-not-what-you-think/ They say a double shot has more like 80-100 mg of caffeine… depending on the bean. Unfortunately they don’t show the calculation. But with the 2.2% caffeine level in the bean it would be 18g * 2.2% * 20% = 80mg Hope this helps!

    Hello there! I see you have a Xenia. I was about to pull the trigger on a Lelit Bianca, but then, when I’ve learned about the Xenia I got hooked with the project. My main concern with regards to milk steaming is the steam pressure stability. I saw in this case that you were starting with ~1.5 bars of pressure. Do you have that much pressure availble only in “cappucino” mode or also when prioritizing espresso? Do you normally wait some time after you brew your espresso before steaming the milk or is the pressure available right away? Also, it would be interesting to know whether you own the standard Xenia or you asked for the larger boiler. Thanks!

Also if I am not mistaken Xenia is currently working on introducing a slightly larger boiler as an option - so in case you are worried, go for the larger boiler.

    The only negative thing about arabica is the price with robusta it's cheaper but it is at a price, too because it's bitter you will need more sugar and that's not good for health it has more caffeine the taste is so different so I prefer arabica even it's more expensive.

    • @simmesreviews

      That is true, however I prefer leaving the sugar out with any espresso... but the taste profile is very different. There was a robusta in the tasting Hofmann did, and even blind it was very clear how it differs from the arabica coffees. There are times when I like one more than the other.

Dadurch muss man automatisch feiner mahlen. For me design was highly important. I do like the balance between classic portafilter style and modern coffee machine. For the more modern look you could go with a bolder color, for the more classic look you could choose the stainless steel or brushed steel look.

    EN: Hello coffee friends, please excuse the missing caption... the second „latte art“ attempt is made with milk steamed with the 4-hole tip in the large jug (used 300ml of milk). DE: Hallo Kaffee-Freunde! Bitte entschuldigt die vergessene Info... der zweite „Latte Art“ Versuch wurde mit Schaum gemacht der mit der 4-Loch Düse im großen Kännchen geschäumt wurde (300ml Milch waren im Kännchen).

      Very helpful and great video.I have an ECM Synchronika which came with a 2-hole tip, but since I do a lot of small 35CL pitcher (4oz milk) single cappuccino I think the 2-hole is perfect. I was considering upgrading but I think the 2-hole is the best fit. Thank you!

      @@postbeam8200 thank you! Having used both tips for a while I see your point and totally agree. The 4-hole is too much for smaller pitchers. I even found myself using the 2-hole with a 50cl pitcher since it gives you more time (which I do need in the mornings...)

      Ok! I am thinking about making a espresso tasting series. Each 1-2 weeks another espresso :-)
