We used to take lawn darts (jarts) throw them straight up, then try to dodge them coming down.

Many of these toys were formative training for today's engineers, industrialists, physicians, teachers, mechanics, astrophysicists, sports enthusiasts, military, and others that were fortunate in having experiences in which future reward through play & experimentation far outweighed the usually minor risks involved. The stupid push toward personal safety at all cost is a disservice to the children of this generation, who are generally users but not creators.

ahhhh toys.... bought my son his first motorcycle at age 4. Race track age 8. No safety inspectors from the state or Fed were involved. I had Two Fanner 50's. I was 7. Wore 'em to shool, with spurs. (Like Johnny TV in Willie Wonka). In 2006 I went on ebay and bought a pair of 50's for $210. Sold them about a year later. I thought I might have a memory recall with the new toy. But, no. Had the 8 ball, slip and slide, vacuu-form, bozo punching doll. and a real Chemistry Set, which I didn't see here.

Wow, you put in all the effort of today's generation..half hearted. You really need to do better research. Over half of the images are from versions from the 90s or later, just a few examples: bull nosed Jarts, "chem" set was mostly cooking ingerdients Mom filled/bought (baking sode, vinegar, food coloring). The orginal slip & slide was 25ft long, yellow, had nothing infltable on it and was anchoted down with 10 plastic spikes to keep it in place.. You missed the real lab sets that had real chemicals, a bunsen burner (aka-sterno can), 150-in-1 electronics kit that you plugged into the wall because it used the same transformer as you TYCO race track. They neede to bring these toys back; as they were originally; for your generation. That way it would have toughened you up. You wouldn't have needed "saaaafe spaaaces" in college, of all places.

Dang, that Vac-U-Form clip triggered a very strong smell memory of the heated sheet just before forming. Good times!

I had 2 or 3 of these toys .do you remember Incredible Edibles. It was kind of like the Thingmaker, but you could eat the creations from the molds , just like eating candy.

Back when we let Darwin thin the crop...We had the best toys, who doesn't remember the smell of the creepy crawler or vacuform creating magic? Or mixing random organic chemicals from the Gilbert chemistry set because the the way the manual told you to mix it was pretty boring...LOL...Of course none of this was as exciting as riding our bikes in the fog behind the mosquito truck spraying that awesome smelling DDT.

OMG! I just realized my mom put the Slip and Slide on the driveway on purpose! B****!

I remember summer days with my slip and slide. me and the other kids in our home units joined three together on a big hill and used to put soap as well. We had a ball. The days when the local creek and swamp were all in a good day. No mobile phones and computer games.

Had most of these as a kid. I'd let my kids play with them if I happened to have one now. These were great. Kids have been dumbed down over the last 50 years.

We were tougher kids back then, who can forget the super ball or how about water rockets ,bb guns ,pogo sticks , epic jumps over your friends on huge ramps on your Schwinn stingray hell yea we were tougher kids today couldn't handle what we used to do for fun , we had real legal fireworks but ahh the world has changed.

Today's kids are molly ciddled by ridiculous parents who wonder are scared to punish kids let alone do things to toughen them up. I could spend hours telling what I got up to but our rules at 5, all out outdoor hard ass fun, bikes no brakes home made slip & slides, I ended up with a 12inch nail thru my ked 4 in below my crotch, still played until dark then it hurt. NZ in the early 60s was awesome brutal but fun.

The Clackers made a comeback in the 90’s, but instead of being attached by a piece of string, it was attached by a plastic handle.

Erector Sets was omitted.

One Christmas I had a toy which cut shapes using polystyrene sheets. The cutter was an unguarded thin wire about 40mm long which was heated to a glowing red and really hurt when it burned you !!!!

Most of these toys we never had in the UK, worse luck. Klackers, i remember, had a nasty habit of shattering, and shrapnel wounds were quite common. I do remember maiming a friend of mine, accidentally hitting him full in the face with the grenade launcher of a Johnny Seven machine gun. Worse, it was his birthday party. It was his Johnny Seven, too. Not one of my finest days ;))

Wouldn't trade any of those fun play days -- mostly outside -- for the mindlessness todays kids experience.

We would get wax paper and wax the slide at the park! And end up going so fast that someone would get hurt and still do it again. It was great fun!!

All us First graders had and carried our pocketknives to school. They were plenty useful for a lot of applications. Now sometimes someone might get a little hurt when we had our BB gun fights. It was truly great growing up in that time period.

when i was a child, my dad bought me a "Tonka-Type" dump truck, the thing about it, was, in the exhaust pipe was a little heating element,and, it came with a little white tube that contained real diesel oil. press a button and the truck would make a rumble sound, and, if you put 2 or3 drops in the exhaust, the diesel oil would burn and smoke from the exhaust,so, i was actually inhaling real diesel exhaust

I am surprised they don't mention mattel's toy guns with greenie stickum caps and bullets that fired out the barrel. I hear my mom saying "your gonna put some ones eye out"

You missed snow boats by K-tel you would strap them to your shoes and go down steep downhill slopes during winter and boy did you fly down those slopes with speeds that made them uncontrollable! Believe it or not I still have my pair in perfect condition I never crashed but many children did and that's why they got banned, truthfully I love them...lol

Wrap people in cotton wool, you get cotton wool people. We (4 brothers) weren't allowed to bleed in the house, so we got good at first aid!

Had creepy crawlers! Loved it. 69 years and still have the results in my scrapbook. Never hurt by Jarts! Easy bake oven no problem, had clackers survived! Blew a whole bunch of plastic bubbles! My lord, super ball? Come on!
