  • Opening up the splits on the lower and upper branches.
After splitting the 60mm x 15mm limbs with a 9 1/2 inch grinder they now need opening up so we fire up the Swan to make the job easier.
I show a few ways of opening up the splits, but all start with the vice and hot cut.
I also show the leg brace a commenter asked about previously. My balance is compromised without a walking stick, making forge work difficult to say the least, the brace allows me to basically lock a leg in place under my own weight and then lean against it. It does nothing for my nerve pain but it's still been a game changer as ugly as it is.

Cheers Grandadz, the leg brace has been one of the best things I've knocked together in a while, current work notwithstanding of course. That bending fork has raised a few eyebrows LOL. It was made to bend inch plus bar stock cold. You should see the jig it pairs with.... :D

..Gud-un Ian!! Piece by piece it's coming along. i'm scared to ask what you used that bending fork on. If you want, i'll send you a book of stamps and you can mail me one of those spare anvils, hahahaha...!!!

The bending fork was made to bend some inch or so round bar cold. For a large set of arches on a garden arbour.
It'd have to be a BIG book of stamps to get me to part with any of my anvils ;)

Caught this a bit late Ian but good to see you're still operating. Hope you are well through the covid crisis, I'll catch up for a beer one day when we can fly internationally again. All the best.
