    I spent time at a shop being the only lasting SW for 10 techs. 3/4 of them didn’t want to keep up, one of them was always in his computer, one was lube only and the last was months from retirement. I kept everyone working with as much as they wanted. That was the one close to retirement and the lube tech. Everyone else spent time on their computers or finding ways not to work. The last month I was there they produced $30,000 worth of work between all of them. Never looked back.

    This is why everything goes in writing. I've actually had the service manager yelling at me in the middle of the shop for something that happened 6 months previous. I demanded to see the paperwork, and he pulled out something that was written on a computer by somebody else, probably him. I then demanded to see the paperwork in my own handwriting, and wouldn't you know it? it was quite different than the computer paperwork. Things like this happened multiple times under this "manager".

    Recommend: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie and Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink. You’d be trying lead across the organization. It isn’t easy, it takes time, and starts with building a relationship. Then compliment what you want to see more of and go slow with some small tips and how it helps them (first) and how it helps you (second). That could be better work for the customer through improved communication, fewer times you two need to discuss what it was (because it was clear the first time), and just plain saved time. It’s not easy and it doesn’t work flawlessly but people are people and we have to work together. :)

    This sums up how I was out of trade school. Problem was that I didn't have a coworker like this that was actually able and willing to teach. Instead it was a constant barrage of petty middle school bullying. Tradesmen like you are what keep America's trades going. 👊🏼

    Man as someone that was a tech for almost a decade then moved into the office and became a service advisor / warrant administrator I was the go to by all the techs just to find out that the other service advisor I had in the office with me at the time were the most useless person I’ve ever met. Even when bring up my concerns to management it was met with a “yeah we will get on that to fix it” nothing ever came to light. Needless to say I didn’t last much longer in that shop as an advisor or tech.

    Two people are at fault here, an employer that thinks a fresh out the oven guy will know how to properly operate unfamiliar equipment in an unfamiliar environment and an employee who thinks that they're cool just because someone stamped a paper for them. All it takes is an hour to give the guy a tour and help him get started on his task. Then you just check in on him to make sure he's not a total screw up.

    If you wanna be an automotive technician just go work for an independent shop. A little over 3 years in I can use a scope, diag just about anything confidently. I’ll do any timing job you throw at me. Motors, transmissions, fords, Chryslers, gm, imports. Hell even been having diesels thrown at me. Welding a cracked 24v block next week. Don’t be afraid just get to work, you’ll make it. Oh and always always always torque wheels down, not worth killing someone over saving 3 minutes

  • @Irishrebel092
    @Irishrebel092 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I manage a heavy diesel shop and i refuse to hire anyone right out of school, and I've only made an exception to that once or twice. They don't teach you to be a mechanic, they tech you to be a technician. Half the training aids are already out of the truck, so they don't teach you that you'll need 3 extensions and 5 swivels to reach the air compressor bolts, or how to get to a fuel check valve on the back of the block while it's in the truck. The most you get out of those schools is a $15k toolbox and $30k of debt

      As an HVAC tech the hardest part of electrical troubleshooting is getting used to different manufacturer's schematic layouts. There is a lot of room for variation within the standard practices. Under standing PIE and EIR formulas is pretty easy once you understand how watts, volts, amps, and ohms relate to each other.

      Sounds like a you issue. As a tech of 22 years, I can 100% day there are major differences in equipment between two shops. At first,the lift had 2 arms and lifted the car from middle of the frame. At chevy, I had a traditional 2 post with 4 arms. Then you get into lifts designed for lifted pickups vs sport cars and they can work funky. Being a lube tech doesn’t do anything but teach people bad habits because honestly, most of you dumb fucks shouldn’t be anywhere near a car. The fact that you can’t understand any of this speaks volumes of your training ability and reflects more on your skills as a trainer than it does the skills of anyone under your wing, trade school graduate or not 😂.

    technicians dont get paid for stuff like this. we get paid for actual paying customers or warranty jobs for a lesser rate. for instance, i work at a shop owned by a company that makes tires, while airing up your tires if you pull up and ask is nice, im actually taking time that i could be getting paid for and instead doing free labor to help someone out. this is also why places insist you make a ticket too, even for just reattaching your bumper with zip ties. we're not all out yo get you and most of us want to give you peace of mind, but peace of mind doesnt pay bills unfortunately

    And this is why I buy private. No obligations. Im not a moron i spend days, full days looking into any vehicle i think about buying. From parts prices, to NHTSA ratings. And i do not buy new. You know a lot of people rag on Ford's for having an aluminum body, but they still hold higher safety ratings then dodge and Chevy. They have for a while. Dodge rams are and were some of the most unsafe trucks by domestically owned companies. The cabins crumple. 80k for a car that sounds like a beach is under it. Congrats on your purchase. Buy domestic.
