My understanding is that adding sand directly to clay creates cement. It's a bit better if the sand is heavily mixed with compost and organic matter, but if you work sand directly with clay you create cement. In my years of working in the industry the best thing to do is to mix compost into clay as the first option. Yes you will need a LOT of it, but that avoids cementation of the clay binding to the sand early on in the process. Later on, as the clay slowly breaks up within the increasingly organic soil profile it's okay to add some sand in to aid in drainage, however sand early on in the amending process, is a big, big, no, no.

One thing Id add is to treat the base of the wine barrel for termites if you are in an area where termites are an issue. My wine barrel planter got eaten out in a few years by termites - obviously love French oak! There are commercially available termite sprays (eg David Grays Ant and Termite Spray - get from Bunnings). If you dont want to spray the barrel wood, you could rest the barrel on a timber base and just spray that.

i picked up one with a rotted out base, might have to put it on a gravel base, or screw in some wire mesh and put in a coir liner.

Displacing other cations doesn't mean the clay has changed. That clay is still there. However if the soil is sodic it will remedy that and cause the clay particles to flocculate.

The rear deck is looking pretty good there bud. Got myself some organic 100% cold press neem oil yesterday and applied it (mixed it with surfactant and bicarb) to the lawn and the frangipani that's got rust on it. Cheers 🙂👍
