Korean Octopus Stir Fry | Catch & Cook
Conditions looked promising due to the low surf and winds leading up to the dive. The target species was White Sea Bass for the dive so spearing reef fish would be put off in order to keep our stealth. As soon as we hit the water we found that the conditions were not good whatsoever with visibility being a murky 5ft. Despite the terrible visibility, we knew there is still a chance a "Ghost fish" could pop up at any moment. We ended up not seeing one but I was able to grab a two spot Octopus on the way in.
One of my favorite Octopus dishes is Korean Octopus Stir Fry. So check out the video to see how I prepare the Octopus to eat.
Surf: 1ft
Winds: 3-4kts

The conditions were looking good leading up to this dive. The visibility was pretty good at around 13ft. I went out with my two friends @slammahyak & @HonestPickleballto hunt for some fish to eat. Slammahyak was heading out for his 2nd time and he ended up catching his first fish. We all know the first fish is really tough to catch. Congrats broski! Possibly my last lobster dive for the season. Conditions were primed to be amazing, and the visibility didn't disappoint! Lobsters were abundant as it is getting close to mating season. I think there’s no question a double wrap is “better” (on paper) in a pool. The problem is giving a fish, what is it I don’t even know, over twice the amount of a “head start” to run into a cave is a nightmare. Id seriously rather single wrap even if it only saves me one bad deep rocked up fish a year. I hate retrieval dives. But also I think a lot of that can be overcome with a double wrap if one gets good at immediately throwing their gun behind them after a shot and grabbing the line as soon as possible. As a reflex. But still, all things being equal, if you’re reflexive about grabbing your line the single wrap is going to be so much better.

    Great gun with next to nothing loading pad. IT HURTS after 10 shots even with mako padding. Also, after 7 years, that ugly "loading pad" almost disintegrated. Other than that, it is an amaizi and accurate gun.

    What do you use to check conditions? And what are the things you look for? ie what should the surf and wind ranges be to be safe?

    • @divespeareat
      @divespeareat 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Without over complicating things I primarily look at these as a shore diver: Primary: - Surf Height: I try to target less than 2ft. But I also factor in the entry/exit environment. So if it is a sandy entry and exit, I would tolerate higher surf - Wind Speeds: Generally speaking I try to go when winds are under 10mph. You also want to see if you are or aren't protected from your dive spot. Secondary: - Wind/Water direction: how and where will the waves be hit on the spot - Tides: Depending on the entry/exit you want to give yourself the best chance for easier entry/exit - Chlorophyll density: if it is too dense you could have higher health risks and bad visibility

      You are not alone. Visibility has been really rough for shore divers over the past weeks. I have heard that it may be from the red tide primarily, but even if the red tide was gone the surf hasn't been great (2ft or lower), which doesn't give particulates time to settle. Just not a easy season for shore divers IMO

    This is a great idea. But distance traveled isn’t really what is most important. It would be interesting to see the Maximum Effective Range for your set up. Meaning the furthest distance you still have enough velocity/power to penetrate a flopper through your target species. Shaft travel may not matter if you can’t penetrate a fish at furthest distance.
