to you, my crazy friend
Wonderful Carl. Merry Christmas from a land down under 🚂🎄🕹
This is so cool!! Do you have a video that explains how the layout came about? I watched the one where you were unhappy with early parts of the layout and problems with buckling track(2yrs ago) but that wasn't far enough back, 😄 I also feel I should know who Emett is but I'm at a loss
Many thanks for liking the layout, I have a Facebook page that I put most of this layout build on, it's called, Carl's Whimsical Railways, Rowland Emett was I believe a Draftsman, and he started drawing cartoons mainly of what was happening in the UK to the railway system, if you can get your hands on a copy of one of his collections, I would recommend the early morning milk train book, you can get it for around £15. It's by far his best collection. I'm sure you'll enjoy it., he was also invited to build a railway for the great exhibition in Battersea Park, it was mainly for children. My father was lucky enough to ride on it when he was a boy., probably his most famous work was the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, all of the inventions in the film were designed and made by him, wishing you all the best, Carl
Hi Carl, no worries, you're welcome. Excellent I'll come say hi, and take a look. OK, cool I'll have a look for it. I bet that would have been an amazing experience to ride around on his creations. Yeah, I found a video of one of his exhibitions and that said he'd made the Chitty Chitty inventions. Thanks for the info, Mick
Brilliant Carl, have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! Thanks for all your wonderful posts over the year, regards Colin
Colin my friend, you have supported me from the start and encourage me so much, I want you to know how very grateful I am, and I do apologise for not replying to everything or commenting on your posts, but be assured I do look and study your modelling, I've learnt a lot from you, wishing you and your family the happiest of times at Christmas, and of course you living where you do, will step into the New Year before us, it'll be a great one,
Absolutely brilliant, Carl. We love it. Have you seen our Dylington Christmas Special. Have a great Christmas and best wishes for the New Year... Cheers James and Dylan 🎅 🎄 🙂👍
Merry Christmas!! This is such a great layout
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year, thank you for liking this slightly different layout, I'm looking forward to doubling its size in 2025, it would be lovely if you hop on for the ride, all the best, my friend
Excellent Carl! Good wishes to you and yours from us all at the ‘other end’ of town. All the best for 2025!
Hello Tony, the builders are getting on well so hopefully in 2025 you could come and visit in the new model room and we could have a good chat about modelling, wishing you and your family the very best
@, ok to that Carl! I hope to restart on the Bowden Parva Railway in February (subject to
Subject to permission from the Boss, too many projects, too little time despite being retired!
Made me smile again. It's a great escape from the cares of this world. Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year! Can't wait to see what blossoms in your imagination for 2025!!
Hello Brian, thank you for your lovely words, next year I should have more room and a permanent set up, which I intend to double the size of the layout, it's a very easy railway to come up with ideas for, wishing you all the very best, and see you next year, Carl
Merry Christmas, and a happy new year to you also, Carl.
Outstanding Carl! Happy Holidays to you and your family and thanks for sharing!
So lovely to hear from you, and I wish you a very happy holiday season, and look forward to 2025, all the best my friend
Complete awe of what you continue to create with this layout Carl. The imagination and execution of these ideas is amazing. I love what you are doing look forward to more in 2025. All the best.
Hello Tony, I managed to find your amazing layout, it's so so good, and I met somebody, sorry can't remember who it was, that had actually seen it, and of course mentioned it was far better to see it in real life, so hopefully one day I will, Chris has bought a few more bits from me in 009. I believe she has a new layout on the way., I really must get my lazy butt moving and come out and see you guys, wishing you all the very best my friend
Happy Holidays and joyful New Year to you as well! Thank you for the videos!
Thank you so much, and I wish you a wonderful holiday time and look forward to a great New Year, see you then with some more silly railways ha ha, all the very best to you
Wow.
How did I miss this one Carl? Did you throw it away when you moved? I have smoke in the traction engine at Sylfaen Halt which I'm not sure ever steamed in real life.... Can't wait for your builders to get finished so you can get back to building railways 😬🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃
Hello John, yes, how did you miss this one? I still had three 009 layouts up until two weeks, unfortunately my eyesight is deteriorating and so this scale is out of my reach these days, but on a positive note, I sold the layouts and all my stock for a nice amount, and reinvested it in the new Bachmann NG7 range which I'm very much looking forward to Building in between visits to coffee shops, I can't wait also for the builders to complete my new modelling room or studio as a Net likes to refer to it, but with everything else they're doing first I don't think it's going to be ready until next summer, all the best lad and catch you soon
My dad loved English humor and he had a book filled with Emetts artwork. This is awesome.
Many thanks, I hope you still have that book, it's probably worth a fortune now, like your dad, I love English humour especially Emett, so I've tried to turn his artwork into a layout, all the best Carl
Awesome work!
The roofs on your pre-made buildings are the best part of the building! It's authentic rusted out sheet metal roofing that I have seen in many places in the USA. Great job on that!
Oh thanks for that, funny thing is, I'm in the UK and I bought these off USA eBay and when they turned up, boy were they battered, they must've had a hard journey, so I had no choice but to repair the roofs, and I wasn't sure how they go down, I build my layout just out of my head with no research or from pictures, so I really appreciate your comments, all the best year
Really awesome micro layout!
That's really kind of you to say, thank you so very much, wishing you all the best, Carl
In the US the rolling stock to hold the longer logs are called logging disconnects I believe
Thank you Robert, I wasn't sure what the correct term was, nice little wagons though, all the best
Excellent work! Hope to see more videos of this project.
Thanks Tony, not sure quite where I'm going with this one yet, did think about nicking your track plan from your lovely layout, it was a proper treat to see it running, the other layouts at the show were all good, but I've seen that sort of thing so so many times, where is yours Put a smile on my face and I watched from a distance to see the reaction the showgoers, smiles and interest from adults and children alike, top job mate, all the best and see you soon, Carl
Thank you I learnt a lot that weekend, change in plans over the half term holidays, so back into Grandpa’s repair shop later in the week, if I get permission………. 😂
Good morning from a wet and windy Sunday in Middle England! Just having my ‘fix’ of your videos for more inspiration. Great to see finally meet you at Railex 2024 earlier this month. Keep in touch!
Hey Tony, so nice to meet you the other day and what a lovely layout your creating, with lots of nice ideas to come, I especially like the airship thingy you have in mind, great to see so many people enjoying the show, sorry, I wasn't able to get back, hopefully when I get my train room open, you and your family will come and visit, you don't have an excuse as you're only down the road, ha ha, I should've asked your permission, but I'm Building or starting to build a new engine, which I would like to call the Cherrington I got the idea when I was chatting with you, all the best, my friend catch you soon
What lovely work, Carl. I was in a bit of a funk about modeling a few years back and a friend suggested I look at On30. I really enjoy that scale after seeing it in person and Calvin has been a great help acquiring stock. Then I saw On18 and fell in love with it. I've so many ideas for things to do that it's slowing me down getting started. I spent last weekend at a show and my table mate had an On18 layout he built on a bookshelf. It is lovely and runs a treat. I have a lot of N Scale track from my years building in N, and the greatest thing to me about On18 is that there are no hard and fast rules or rivets to count. It really puts me in mind of your work and seeing what you've done here is really inspiring.
Hi Jeff, lovely to hear from you and thanks for your kind words again, On30 certainly changed my modelling, I was in a bit of a rutt modelling UK stuff mainly, then I stumbled across the scale, so very different to what I've been doing and I just took to it straight away, and then of course On18 followed along nicely, Calvin has been super good to me, with helping advice and generally pointing me in the right direction, I do tend to go off plan a bit now and again, maybe a bit whimsical or just cartoony, but it's not hurting anyone, not sure where I'm going with this one as yet, but I think I might keep it micro, hope you're well and happy modelling all the best Carl
@@carlroberts2539 Calvin is a 🌟. How do you do your hook and chain couplings?
Jeff, I just use a track pin , bent slightly and short piece of chain, I do glue the chain to one of the wagons permanently, not a great way of doing it I know but I haven't come up with anything better yet
@@carlroberts2539 Excellent... thank you!
Nicely done,,thanks for sharing,,😊
Thank you, Frankie. Very kind of you to say all the best to you Carl.
Hi Carl, thanks for the kind words. Your models turned out to be absolutely incredible! At 1:08 I just call those "On18 Flat Cars." They are sprued that way to keep the printing costs down and simplifies my life greatly. At 2:46 those are what I call disconnect cars. In the real world, you could haul items of varying lengths with them and a chain or bar was put down the middle to join them together. I have seen tank cars done in that style, although it always looked like a derailment waiting to happen. 4:00 those are just plain On18 chassis. Currently, I am changing the printing material so they are grey, instead of white, but functionally all the same! For the fine details, the grey stuff is much more durable. 5:15 is an old crane design I am slightly modifying to meet the specs of my current printing company but I LOVE how it turned out! As for the weight issue in the boxcar, I am looking into having some weights laser-cut from steel but I need to figure out how much weight you get, relative to the cost overall. Alternatively, you could cut some lead flashing or metal balls in the voids on the underframe to hold things down. Sadly a cast brass underframe clocks in at a hefty $65 each for a 10-pack, so I think that's not really an option!
Hi Calvin, thank you so much for filling in the blanks, your models are an absolute pleasure to build there so well made it makes my modelling easy, I know very little about the scales and the correct terms for the wagons /cars even the engines, so it makes it very hard for me to answer some of the questions, folk been very kind about my modelling but that's all it is. I just build models., I have no technical knowledge, you have encouraged me, guided me and helped me so much, all the best my friend from across the pond
Wonderful work. I hope you post another video on this project.
Many thanks for your kind words, I'm a bit lazy when it comes to making these videos, but my Son is onto me, it's not like I don't like doing them. I just forget must be my age all the best you
Never heard of these scales but ON30. I sure can appreciate your attention to detail and painting since I do HO scale. I do a lot of scratch building and building kits from the turn of the 19th century models like IHC Old Time Freight Cars, Walthers, Silver Streak, Train Miniatures, Roundhouse and Tichy Train Group. Most of the freight cars were based on the truss rod flatcar with to hand grabs and no brakes. K-brakes were introduced soon after the turn of the century and AB brakes came out in the late 20's. To be correct I'd have to use link & pin couplers but prefer the ease of Kadee couplers. Cheers from across the pond in eastern TN
Great layout and very nice rolling stock or "wagons" as you blokes call them. I've never heard of 009 narrow gauge but I can appreciate the detail of your work. Is this narrow gauge O scale? I've been collecting some Lionel 027 to go with my train set like I had when I was 3 years old. I model HO scale at the turn of the 19th century so I usually have to build my rolling stock from kits like IHC, Walthers, Silver Streak, Roundhouse & Tichy Train Group. Most of the turn of the century rolling stock is based on the truss rod flatcar with no brakes or very early K-brakes (AB brakes didn't come out until the late 20's) or grab irons. I just finished an old time blacksmith car for the D.L.&K (Lakawana) which I painted with acrylics and weathered it with oil paints to give me that greasy look like a well used wooden covered flatcar of that period. Takes longer for it to dry but it's worth the wait. Cheers from an old modeler from across the pond in eastern TN
Thanks Rusty, I'm not very technical in fact don't know much at all really, just light Building stuff, I've made over 100 layouts for different folk mostly micros, but very little about scales, 009 seems quite big here in the UK probably because it's so small you can get a nice layout in limited space, your modelling fantastic I'd love to see more, all the best to you
Never heard of On18 but very nice work which I can really appreciate. We refer to those as flatcars. I model the turn of the 19th century in HO scale and I have to just about build all my rolling stock from kits like IHC, BTS (Better Than Scratch), Walthers, Roundhouse, Silver Streak, Train Minitures and Tichy Train Group and kit bash some. Most of the old rolling stock is based on the truss rod flatcar. They usually had no brakes and grab irons. The first brakes used were K-brakes and, I think, in the 30's they came out with the AB brakes. I just finished building an old time blacksmith car for the D.L.&W. (Lackawana) and weathered it with oil paints after painting it with acrylic paints. Takes longer for the oils to dry but it gets me that old greasy look like one would see on a well used turn of the century wood covered flatcar. To be correct I'd have to use link & pin couplers but prefer the ease of Kadee couplers. I really love your "wagons" as you call them. I love those couplers. I had to take a screen shot of your building as I do Lionel 027 which is O scale but kinda squashed down just a bit. I love to scratch build so I really appreciate your work. Cheers from across the pond from an old modeler in eastern TN
Hi Rusty, thank you so much for taking the time to comment, I haven't heard of On18 scale until I found some models that Calvin produces on his channel make it with Calvin, I had built an On 30 layout that went down well with folk, and as this is a similar scale, basically using O scale structures I thought I have a go, flat cars, yes, that's what Calvin calls them, your modelling sounds fantastic. There's lots there that I've never heard of. Do you have a channel that you show your builds, I would be fascinated to see it, wishing you all the best, Carl
Hi, Carl. Always nice to hear from you.
Very kind of you to say, I probably mentioned before I'm not the best at remembering to do these videos, it's my son that keeps having to remind me, wishing you all the best
Great looking models..just my kind of " funky" stuff. Exciting plans, makes me want to get busy myself!
Thank you Brian, I've always liked this scale and it's easier on my aging eyesight, as I mentioned, I have an Emett tram to build so will swap between the two, all the best
Those wagons and loads look great, Carl, as does the loco. We are looking forward to seeing this layout develop when you get the time. If the wagon with the barrel was on our layout it would be carrying Dylington Custard. Great video...cheers James 🙂👍
Hello boys, you've been posting some lovely videos, I'm pleased with the way the rolling stock is coming along and I haven't built in this scale for a few years now, Custard you say ha ha, I might have to do something for my Emett layout with you boys in mind, wishing you both all the best
@carlroberts2539 Thank you, Carl. Something on your Emett layout concerning Dylington Custard would be fun... Cheers James and Dylan 😁👍
Your choice of twig for logs is spot on! The bark texture scales down brilliantly as does the ring detail on the ends. Lovely use of these little whatever-you-call-thems!
Many thanks for your kind words, I was pleased how the twigs turned out, I have some plastic ones, but there's nothing like the real thing, all the best
Most everyone I watch on YT with amazing modeling skills and creativity are so humble about what they create. That includes you. So neat to see plastic pieces becoming real life models of what’s in your head.
What a lovely thing to say, thank you so much, it's funny when I look at what I've built I'm never that happy, I suppose it's because I can see where I could've done better, I explained to a chap once the bits and bobs that I had used to make a model, he said afterwards he wished he did not asked as when he looked at the model all he could see was bottles and coffee stirrers., wishing you all the best, Carl
Small is beautiful.....
This is fanTAStic and is my inspiration for the layout I’m just starting.
Many thanks Jordan, I hope you enjoy your build and maybe put some clips on TH-cam so we can all see what you create, I was very pleased with how this turned out, I copied the track plan from an old 009 layout, sold it a while back but in lots of ways, wish I had kept it, all the best Carl
Good morning, Carl. Thank you for sharing.
Many thanks, its not my best work, but im having fun,all the best
Funny 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Boing time for bed said Zebedee, brilliant Carl we love it... Cheers James 🙂👍
Hi James and Dylan, Liking and learning from your 009 build, great idea having access panels to the tracks, I found the metal container and the characters for the magic roundabout on our local market store, in a week moment I bought both and thought I'd knock this little layout up, all the best to you both and keep up the great work
@carlroberts2539 Dylan is pleased you're enjoying his 009 build. He's been doing a little bit more to it. Hopefully, there'll be an update once he's got a little more done to it . We really enjoyed seeing the magic roundabout layout 😁👍
This has just come up on my TH-cam, simply brilliant! I am in the UK, and model British in OO, but i can still admire your classic U.S. theme, and modelling skills.
Hello Phil, many thanks for your kind words, I'm in the UK too, I've gone off plan a bit recently modelling just silly stuff really, but this winter, I hope to get back to some British layouts, I have a micro 7mm to build so I'm looking forward to that, wishing you all the best, Carl
OMG the stuff you come up with!
HaHa thanksTony, my mind does wonder a bit. All the best.
Very nice model ....................
Sono piccole opere d'arte. Ciao.
What is the stone paving on the layout on the left?
Hi Joseph, its from Purple Bobs Hobbies in the UK, he supplies two different kinds. I've used the lighter one, not the grey.
fantastic work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cheers from CT USA!!!!!!!!!!!
I know this is 4 years old, but I just got 2 of my engines converted to RC/ battery and its excellent. I was in the same boat re- not getting joy out of the hobby anymore because of track maintenance. I genuinely think RC/ battery is the future of model railways. (Some) people dont want to muck about with track and the like. They just want to run trains.
Totally agree with you, radio control is a game changer, and if you shop around you can pick up the bits needed at a reasonable cost, it's funny you should mention this as I'm just Building a Gn 15 Emett engine with RC, all the best and happy modelling
@@carlroberts2539 I dont think I could ever go back tbh. Good luck on the new build!
awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many thanks, it was a fun build, such a lovely scale to working with
Looser , you don’t have any family or friends
I can't help but smile when I see your work. That is an amazing backscene; it almost appears 3 dimensional with the way the view splits, drawing the eye down the streets.
Thank you Jeff, always nice to see smiles, I must carry on with this layout, I've got a bit sidetracked, as I do, all the best to you, Carl
Carl we love it. Particularly like the yacht, my grandad had one like that and he was as nutty as you are with his models, we made a submarine once! Andrea says hello to Annette.
Hello both, I'm so pleased you like the latest layout, and even more pleased that I'm finally building one that Andrea likes ha ha, I can't recall you mentioning your grandad had a layout, I would love to see some pictures of that, and how funny that there's a half built sub marine on my workbench at the moment, struggling a little to get it to move up and down as I would like, I might have to resort to it just being the periscope, we have moved coffee shops again, still very close to yours, we are trying the new one wink wink, I think you know the one I mean, sending love to both
@@carlroberts2539 Actually wasn't a layout, we used to go to Abbey Park to sail the model yacht and the rubber band powered submarine. I hope the sub is "Ready to Eat" soon 😜
@@johnanderson9523 I used to go to Abbey Park with my dad, we didn't have a rubber band powered submarine, but a beautiful blue yacht and a long stick, happy memories indeed, were you the boy that threw stones and tried to overturn my boat ha ha ,and as for your sub joke, Annette has told me to ignore it, see you in Pret if you're passing
Carl it's looking great! Love all the movement. Looking forward to your progress on the moving platform.
