Retiring To Asia
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 มี.ค. 2015
Hey y'all, my name is Michael, I'm 58, and I retired to SE Asia in December 2023. After working many years in law enforcement, followed by a second career in banking, I wanted to retire while I'm young enough to be able to do some of the things I've always dreamed about! Follow along to see everything I go through and what this new life is like.
How I Invested to Pay for Retirement - My Dividend Income
I'm paying for my living expenses with passive income, most of which is dividend income. In this video I'll discuss the details of two investments paying monthly dividends, tell you how much I invested in each and how much I earn every month. Would you like living on dividends? Here's how I'm doing it. I'll talk about 2 of my investments in this video and there will be a series covering other dividend focused investments I've made that pay me a steady passive income that is paying for all of my expenses living in Thailand after retiring early and moving.

Hi and thank you for this nice video ! Question : what us the policy re. dogs ...are they allowed in the unit, around the pool..??? Thanks !
Thanks for watching. No pets.
Is it me or do the pools in Thailand look to be about 3 feet deep...
Often they are shallow and the "deep" end is about 5'
@RetiringToAsia Thanks! I'll do a little research to find out why. ( I'm guessing the water table is high)🙂
Can wait till I get there 😂❤
great video thanks!
Thanks for the detailed information. I am doing that trip in 10 days. THANK for talking about the AC on the bus I will be dressing correctly. I got stuck on an 12 hour train ride with killer AC.
BTS and the bus are always freezing to me. 🤣
Very nice place, Micheal. I did enjoy the tour. I may send them an email and I will mention your name. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Glad you liked it
I'd like your opinion on something, and I'll say ahead of time that I know that you are not a Financial Advisor, and I'm not asking for advice...but just your opinion! Would you take 300k and purchase an Immediate Paying Annuity at about 1,400 per month with a 3% annual Cost of Living Adjustment and Guaranteed Lifetime Income? Or would you go the route that you are taking, and Dividend Invest on your own, keeping in mind that the 300k Annuity Investment funds are handed over Permanently, so you will never get those funds back. If you could answer me as soon as possible, I'd be greatly appreciative.
I would not buy an annuity, but that's just me
@@RetiringToAsiaI got you on that!
@@georgeandy6923]I agree on not buy annuity, but that’s just me also.
Thank you for your videos., i am planning a trip to Hua Hin very soon and looking to retire there thanks again !
Sounds like a great plan! Thanks for watching.
@RetiringToAsia Have you done a retirement visa video ? I have spoke to a agency there in Hua Hin and they said just bring your passport and they will do the rest.
Nice video mate, subbed.
Thank you
Great video !! Just curious, is exchange rate better in Pattaya or at Bangkok airport . I’m coming from Canada middle of this February. Also should I bring USD or CDN ? Thx for any info
Thanks for watching and great questions. If you're just coming for a holiday you can probably exchange some at the airport and "as needed" in Pattaya without making much of a difference. If you're coming from Canada, you probably wouldn't want to pay to exchange to USD then THB but it might be worth a Google and some math just to be sure when February rolls around.
@@RetiringToAsiaok so they do exchange Canadian bills then ? Thx
Do they accept credit card?
"They" who? The bus, online reservation yes but at the counter, cash only - small bills only.
I have invested in MPLX been a really strong growth in share value and around 8% income. Dividend has been increasing steadily each year
Sounds great!
This is exactly what I'm doing. I'm from the UK. I hope you don't mind me asking, would £30,000 ($37,500) annual dividend income be enough for you to live comfortably in Thailand (for your current lifestyle)? Thanks for the great content.
For me, yes, but not everyone.
You could live well off half that.
100% VTI
Very interesting topic!
Thanks. More to come!
I'm having such Deja Vu.
555 yes little different edit. Restarting the series.
What are your favorite investments for retirement? **recommendations of advisors or investments will be deleted **
Right now you can get over 4% yield on a simple Treasury money market fund, which seems like a great deal for something that is liquid within 24 hours (on business days) and extremely secure. However, interest rates may go down in the future, which would make these less attractive (but they could go up, too!). I personally don't invest solely on dividends, but I'm also not retired. I do hold a substantial amount of a fund that uses the CRSP US Large Cap Value Index as its benchmark. These are large, conservative equity stocks that frequently pay a solid dividend. The specific fund I use is up 17% YoY and the dividend yield is currently about 2%. That is a crazy-good total return, but of course it can also go down!
Thanks for watching and sharing the info
I am currently in higher risk income funds while I am still working full time. I am slowly diversifying out to lower risk dividend and covered call style income funds. Nearly 100% is currently reinvested. 2 year goal to SE Asia retirement, at least partial. I may elect to work up to 3 months a year in the US ( while I am over visiting family) spring time to keep cash account up and potentially offset some necessary tax withdrawals to allow more reinvestment.
what's the name of the condo building
Sea and Sky. It's in the first 5 seconds of the video.
Nice room great video😁
Thanks for watching
Glad glad you are ok. Sounds like a nice time coming up!
Thank you
Nice, something you can talk about this year can be a health Insureance for older guys because it's a little bit of the jungle.
I'm glad you had a good first year. I've been following you since before you made the move and have watched with fascination as it is what I am planning also. I am looking to move to Thailand before the end of 2026 and would love more videos about the mechanics of the moving process e.g. best resources for finding rentals, where to live, transferring money (e.g. Wise) etc. Difficult to find resources for under 45s on visa issues :( It looks like the Destination Thailand Visa might be my best bet but I need to do more research. Thank you very much!
Thanks for watching and sticking with me.
I came back to Thailand for a longer stay since I enjoyed my first visit so much. I have been to Pattaya, an awesome city, Koh Larn, awesome beaches, and now I am in Bangkok. I really do like it here in Thailand. If I had to retire here, I could. But with a choice, I am leaning towards not. I think I would have an issue with the weather. It's very hot here in general, and even though I have not experienced the wet season, I think I wouldn't like all the rain during thar time. Coupled with the heat. Everything I know is back in VA. It's where I was born, where I grew up, where I worked for a long time. I have met a lot of very nice people here in Thailand. One in particular who seems so very kind and sweet. If there was anything to tip the scales in favor of me living here, she would probably be it. From what I know. Which is not a lot. There is a huge language barrier between myself and the Thais. It makes meaningful and deeper communication and understanding difficult. It's hard enough getting to know someone in the US who speaks English. Sometimes in life, the things that we fear the most, are the things we should do. I believe in that, and I don't fear the move. But it's more a question of happiness. If I am not fully happy about everything in my life living in VA, then I might not be fully happy wherever I go. In general I am happy. But things are not perfect. And that's ok. I just question how living in Thailand would be something that would improve my happiness. Apart from a relationship, that is. With the right person, that could change everything. Being that I won't be here long enough to be able to develop that, it comes down to the weather, way of life, culture, and things like that. I do love it here, but I enjoy exploring the world, seeing new things. I think this second trip here has shown me that this probably won't be my home base to do that from. And if I did have to move here, I wouldn't want it to be in the big city. Bangkok is far too crowded, and traffic is chaotic. Smaller cities would be better, but then easy access to some of the small things you like might be reduced. The one thing about the US, is that it has virtually everything. Even a grocery store in Bangkok doesn't have what a lot to most of the grocery stores in the US have. But those are the smaller issues. The larger issues were the ones I mentioned at the beginning.
All things you have to consider when making a big move. Enjoy your visit.
@RetiringToAsia I am enjoying it very much. Thailand is an awesome vacation destination. Thank you for your videos. I am sure they will helpful to many because the information is very good.
I'll never understand why you give baht price we dont live in Thailand dont you think you should take the effort to list 5 or so exchanges US $.Australia and euros or are you just looking for Thai people to rent or buy.
🤣🤣 well, if you come to Thailand you won't be renting using any of those. If youre considering moving to another country, don't you think you should learn to adapt to it? I've explained this MANY times. Baht is used here. If you can't Google your conversion, you probably can't survive in another country. If I post 5 conversions, they're all wrong the next day because exchange rates fluctuate and 6 or 7 others will complain that I didn't list theirs. I know because I used to waste my time doing it. Thanks for watching. Good luck.
FANTASTIC SO LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR TRAVELS 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 HAVE A GREAT TIME FILMING
Thanks so much!!
I'm finally back posting after more than a month away.

Fine
Lol. I left VA on the 7th to come to Thailand for a month. It was freezing there. Icey cold. The weather here in Pattaya is very nice. Hot, but nice. I love it here.
Hahaha it's cold for Thailand now
@RetiringToAsia That is what I have heard, but I get hot pretty easy. Sweat like no one you have ever seen before. So this is hot to me. I see where the temps will be climbing back up into the 90's soon. I was expecting that. But right now, I am on Koh Larn, at Samae Beach, and it's wonderful here! The water here is much much clearer than the beaches in VA. I'm sure you know that.
Samae is my favorite on the island. Enjoy
Wow!! Thanks for taking the time to shot this video. Really good info. Is it possible to rent and secure a place without actually being in Pattaya? I will be there in late February.
