Truckers Protest, My Thoughts.

For three weeks now a few hundred truckers have been occupying the downtown core of Canada's capital claiming they are protesting COVID mandates which are scheduled to be lifted in a couple of weeks. Is that what they really want? Not if you listen to what they say. Here are some of my thoughts on the matter.
Dutty Large Condenser Microphone Part 2

In my review of this microphone I did not deal with using it to record into a digital voice recorder in any depth and since that was the only place I could get it to work, I felt I should look at that more closely. So, in this video I test this mic with my Tascam DR-05.

The Fosmon Studio Microphone is an inexpensive large condense mic. Here I test it against the Neewer NW 800 and the MXL 770 with lots of samples for you to compare. It certainly has less self noise than the Neewer but does it stand up to the MXL 770? You be the judge.

I know a couple of people who feel the science around masks and vaccines is all a hoax. They are, unfortunately not the only ones. Unvaccinated people are getting sick and some are dying. They are also infecting a lot of others. It is all so unnecessary. This is an appeal for them to just look around and see what really is happening.
Evistr L 157 vs V 508
มุมมอง 3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This video was made in response to a request from a viewer wondering how these two voice recorders compare. They are quite different beasts. One records in stereo, accepts an SD card and will accept either LINE IN or an EXTERNAL microphone and has a DENOISE setting while the other one doesn't. But the other one does have some redeeming qualities. Watch and see which one meets your needs best.

Gain Control with the Comica V-05 Lavalier Mic
I just got it today. Was trying to make a review video. I've never done one so dk what to expect.
Good luck with it!
My Evister started to freeze up after 2 years. The reset button did not fix it. The screen was blank. PC would not recognize it. Its garbage now. *Do not use a sharp metal object to push in the reset button. You can easily puncture the Li Ion battery and it can get thermal runaway and explode. I almost punctured the battery in my Evister v508 with a metal wire. It stared to get warm, but thank god did not catch fire. Use only a blunt non metal object to push in the reset button. Even a paperclip could puncture the battery, so be careful!
Thank you for sharing this important information! I'm sorry to hear that your recorder stopped working. Have you reached out to Evistr to see what they say? I would.
@@g.websterstudios6674 I can't find it on Amazon anymore. Its not a "real" brand like Sony is. I sent the information to Health Canada for safety review. If you go to far in the reset hole, with a sharp pointed object you can damage the Li Ion battery. I will let you know what the government consumer protection says. Take care.
Have you ever ordered any new $5-100 mic online that you’ve been impressed with?
Yes I have. I have a pair of LyxPro pencil mics which I use in many of these videos. I have a Zingyou USB microphone which isn't to bad and as I recall the Fosman Studio Microphone was pretty good, Here is the link to that review. th-cam.com/video/PwPAzVGWuLw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=y6txN0dbE3Pskrpl I have also tested and reviewed several so called video mics ( Neweer CM-15 th-cam.com/video/LF8e-YwoYBs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4MU14F8PL7MbaRIb, Moukey MC-m2 th-cam.com/video/2oZ6QO0adC4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Ae0rqzaKxkFhSxl6, Maono AU CM 10 th-cam.com/video/R2Am92wUUoI/w-d-xo.html) which produce reasonable sound quality for the money. How do you set get in mold start recording stop it play it back errase it?
Hi Niki. When you turn the recorder on it is in Play mode with the last recording set to play. To record you press the red Record button. To Stop you press the Play/Pause button in the middle of the direction keys. To play you press the Play/Pause button. To erase you press the Delete button on the lower right of the unit or use the Delete function in the Menu. I hope that helps, but if not, let me know.
Hope you show how to use.
Thanks for a very good and thorough review and demo of this microphone. I have a Canon Vixia R800 camcorder that also requires a battery powered microphone. I've been looking for an exterior mic so I'm not limited to the built in microphone. For the price, I may give the Sevenoak a try. Thanks again.
Thanks. This really is a nice little mic. I hope it works well for you.
Thanks for your video. I could not find this Evistr 508 model on Amazon. Would you happen to know a direct link to this product?
Thanks for your video. I could not find this Evistr 508 model on Amazon. Would you happen to know a direct link to this product?
A decent smartphone with a decent mic is good enough
"Good enough" is a very subjective term and is something that each user must assess for themselves and would depend on the purpose/end use of the recording. I use the recording app in my smartphone quite often and I am pleased with the quality FOR THAT PURPOSE. I would not use it for recording an audio book. For the purpose discussed in this video I would use a separate digital recorder to keep my lecture recordings separate and in one place.
My smartphone records better audio then my Sony audio voice recorder px470
How about using a phantom power unit?
Hi Marc. I did test it with phantom power but it didn't work. I did that in Part Two here th-cam.com/video/BteLpIySuo8/w-d-xo.html I will try it again and if I get a different result, I will either post a new video or comment here.
Thank you, very informative with good sound demo's. One thing to note is that another demo showed that this takes a 512gb tft card, a whole year of recording. Thanks again. 👋
That sounds crazy good
It is a very good recorder. Great size, very convenient and easy to use, good battery life and it sounds good too.
I was hoping you would tell how to set it for voice activated recording. The printed instructions were a little vague on this feature.
TO use the voice activated recording mode, go to the Record Settings menu, press enter (Play), scroll to Track AVR mode, press enter, select the AVR Level, press enter, select the a suitable level (you might need to try a few to find the level that works for what you what to do, the higher the number the more sensitive it is) then press the Back key, scroll up to AVR Switch, press enter, select ON. Now when you press Record it will only record when there is sound at or above the level you have selected. I hope that helps. If not, let me know.
price wisely i would go with mackie
The Mackie is definitely a nice mic at a great price and I have used it in some of my voice over work.
Hi, thanks for the comprehensive review. It's a big help. I just put in my order a moment ago while watching this video of yours. I have watched the rest of your Evistr videos before this video, and it gave me confidence to purchase it for my purpose. I am hoping to record meetings and getting clear voices from this device.
I'm glad you found the reviews helpful.
Pls suggest me evistr v508 or Sony icd ux 570. For music( vocal) classes.
I have not tried the Sony icd ux 570 but in general I think the Sony recorders have slightly lower self noise than the Evistr recorders. It isn't a huge difference but might be something to consider. Overall I don't think you would be disappointed with either unit. The V508 is a good digital voice recorder. I hope this helps.

Your cat is hilarious btw 😂
My cat is VERY persistent. If I sit in that spot he always comes up on the table and insists on being patted. f after dinner I don't move to my usual chair, he will sit on the coffee table in the living room and scold me until it do sit down and again he insists on being patted,
If you don’t mind my asking, what do you use to edit your videos?
At the time of this video I was using Open Shot to sync the V508 recorded audio to the video and then I would use the Video Editor included with Windows to join the clips together and generate any title cards or overlays. I now use NCH's Video Pad instead of Open Shot. After one of Open Shot's "upgrades" it no longer "cooperated" with what I was trying to do. I found Video Pad and it is much more transparent to use, much easier to sync the audio to the video and has many more features. I still use Windows Video Editor for the titles but that's only because I haven't taken the time to learn the much more powerful system in Video Pad. Hope that helps. If you have any questions, just let me know.
Thank you 🙏🏽 💯

Hi sir, could I ask if the evistrl53 is better or is the v508 better
Hi Aaron. I don't know if one is "better" than the other but the L53 is much more versatile in that it has gain control and lower self noise. The L53 needs to be attached to your computer to transfer files while the V508 can use an SD card or be attached to the computer. I prefer the L53 because of the gain feature and I prefer the size/style of it but both have comparable recording quality. I hope that helps.
Really? The voice activation does not seem to work, and on the lowest voice quality setting, the battery doesn't seem to last 8 hours. 😥
Hi David, I'm sorry to hear that your V508 is functioning properly. I would suggest that you reach out to Evistr Customer Service. I had an issue with one of their other recorders and they were very prompt in responding and very helpful. They solved the problem very quickly.

Thank you so much for responding quickly. I am trying to meet a deadline. I really appreciate it. I've tried everything I can think of. The numbers are moving like it's recording. The light is on and says it's recording but when I playback, I hear nothing
I subscribed to your channel because this is what's needed. Someone who actually responds to the people watching
You may have a defective unit. I assume that you have tried adjusting the volume and have also tried listening with headphone or earbuds. Also try moving the files to a computer and listening to the playback there. The recording on this device is very straight forward. Pressing the red record button starts and stops the recording process. If the red light is coming on I would assume it is recording. Do you hear anything when you playback your "recording"?

I purchased the V509 under the name Dgtek V509 from Amazon and I too made the purchase mostly due to the AAA battery option instead of an internal battery.
Nice recorder but I do wish it had less self noise.
Same planning to buy model with AAA batteries because of the replaceable battery option. Zoom recorder used AA batteries. Sadly tradeoff is noise. Reminds me of my first mp3 player.

This may be the best review for a recording device I've seen. Good examples, very thorough. Subbed!
I'm blushing. Thank you. I try to make all my reviews as thorough and unbiased as I can. Thanks for the Sub.
Do you know if there is a way to change the input volume for an external mic? Your example sounds great with an external mic but when I try it my voice sounds so loud on the playback and it seems like it is recording it too loud. Any tips?
Hi Kevin. Unfortunately there is no gain control on the V508. For that you would have to step up to the L53. What I suggest is that you use headphone to monitor as you record. I assume you are using a lav mic. I think you likely have the external mic to close to your source which will cause distortion. To see the different this can make watch my Evistr V509 review ( th-cam.com/video/bUjTeGtcxpQ/w-d-xo.html ). It is ready sensitive and I had to use the lav mic at 12 to 15 inches away and it was still distorting and I have samples that show the difference. Another option is to use a mic that has a gain control. I hope this helps, but if not, let me know and we will see what other solutions we can find.
Is the audio transferable to macios?
Hi Mickey. The V508 records either MP# or WAV files (your choice). Your Mac should be able to handle both. If the native audio player doesn't accept these files (I am not an Apple user so I have no experience with their software) you can always download something like Audacity which will allow you to use any audio format and you can edit and clean up your recordings easily. Audacity is available for any operating system. www.audacity.org
Cool review! I just got mine today. I need it for my short wave radio hobby. In specific items on such receptions. I like the "line - in" jack on the V508. It's an awesome little device. It's really pretty action pack. 👍🏻😎 10.1.22
Thanks Rudy. Line-in is a really handy feature and one I use all the time. Enjoy.
Hi Rudy, I am thinking of getting one for exactly the same reason as you. :-) Do you need a special line-in cable from the device manufacturer or will any line-in cable do? And, would you agree to share some of the recordings you made on evistr508 through line in, for example by uploading them to the vocaroo audio hosting service?
@@piotrbienkowski1095 They are pretty much cheap but well made devices. On board it has like 16GB capacity but on the TF card the storage is up to 32GB and that has a side switch to what size you need? Supports Windows 98, XP, 7/8/10 versions. It doesn't support Windows 11. Any cable "line - in" will do... Nothing special about that. You will have to determine which switch needed to use for the line - in or external microphone connections. As for giving a sound example it's not appropriate since my recordings remain private, so no one gets offended. And that kind of action you would need written permission from such source to be granted to hear such content. So, purchase the cool DVR and listen to your own recordings. 👍🏻☹️
@@rudytoth Thank you for your reply. It is (not only) my opinion that whatever people, in particular radio amateurs, put out on shortwave, is in the public domain, but then again I do not want to get into a dispute about that. :-)
@@piotrbienkowski1095 Sure. I understand and agree. I just use the DVR for station ID and addressing perhaps to obtain a cool QSL cards. Which I have few of them being foreign radio stations and domestic. It was easier for me to record on the device than use memory to jot all that down like years ago. 😁👍🏻
Hello Mr. Gordon! I have the L157, and it records without any ability to modulate the sound. So all recordings are as if way too loud, causing distortion. I have put the volume down to 0 and though somewhat lower in volume, it still records with the same amount of distortion. I don't find that a problem with voice, but when I record my piano practice, even with the recorder buried under a pillow, it distorts the sound in such a way that it is uncomfortable to listen to even for reviewing my practice. No way to modulate. I would be interested to know if the V508 is better in this regard, the same, or worse. Thanks!
Hi Kareemah. It sounds like you need something with a gain control so you can control the recording volume, The Evistr L53 has that or if you want a step up, the Tascam DR-05. Both allow you to adjust the recording volume to prevent distortion. I have not had the type of issue you describe with either the V-508 or the L-157 but I have had it with other similar recorders and it is very frustrating. You will find having a gain control is extremely useful. I hope that helps.
@@gordonsviewsreviews3360 Yes, thank you, for your response back! I found reviews that also show the V508 with a better sound. But since I do have this one, I found a solution in post production, by opening any recorded file from this Evistr into Audacity. I can then apply the 'effect' of 'normalize loudness' and it makes the sound much more comfortable to listen to. Thanks for your suggestions!
Hi, Gordon I am a recording secretary of our HOA. When transcribing minutes this device doesn't seem to go back only a minute or so. It rewinds to the beginning of the recording. Is there a way to just rewind a short amount. Very frustrating typing minutes. I can't type as fast as people talk. Help me, please. Thank you.
Hi Barbara. I don't know if this will help. There is no way within the V508 to rewind or fast forward within a file. You can however use the A/B facility of the device. To do this you must be playing back the file. When you get to the beginning of the segment you wish to repeat, press the DEL button. When you reach the end of the segment you wish to repeat, press the DEL button again. Your play back will now repeat that portion of the recording until you press DEL again, at which point the play back will continue through the file. You can repeat this as you go and it will not delete or harm the recording. If that doesn't work for you there is an alternate method. I will assume that you are transcribing the recordings on a computer. You also likely transfer the recordings to a computer file as a backup. There are several different, free, software packages available for processing recorded files, all of which are excellent. To my mind the simplest is Audacity ( www.audacityteam.org/ ). It is available for Windows, Linux or Apple systems. In the software you can play back whatever section you wish and move around the file freely. You can also clean up the recording of any background noise and edit out any unnecessary interruptions. There are all kinds of tutorials available on TH-cam for Audacity but it is not difficult to figure out for the tasks we are discussing here. I hope this helps.

Hi Gordon. I ordered two of these from Amazon. Unfortunately, I have to return them because there is no way to adjust the levels. What a bummer to make a recorder and not be able to adjust the level before recording. I reached out to the email they included, but no one got back to me. You had to move the mic away from you. What is the use of using a clip on mic if you cannot clip it on your shirt for being too loud? You should be able to adjust the level so you don't have to physically move the mic away from you. Same with line in. It records way too soft and you cannot adjust the level to record hotter. Bummer. I tried to save money,, but I will have to annie up and buy the Tascam. Cheers. MRT
HI Michael. The V508 does not allow you to adjust the recording levels. For that you need to go to the Evistr L53 which does have gain control. It is cheaper than the Tascam and most reviewers agree is is "almost" as good. I have both and I agree with that assessment. I have used both the L53 and the Tascam DR-05 to record the audio for various video without issue. The L 53 is a much more compact recorder if that is a consideration but the Tascam has the advantage of an SD card. The Evistr only has the built-in memory of 8 Gb. Good luck with whichever you choose.
@@g.websterstudios6674 ok. Thanks for your reply and the info. Yes I may have to go with the Tascam. We'll see. I may check out the other model you recommended. Take care Gordon and thanks again. Cheers. MRT. :)

Is there a way to get rid of plosives? I can't see a foam screen that's sized correctly for it
There are a couple of ways to prevent plosives. The best way, whether you are using a microphone or speaking into the digital recorder's mics, is to not speak directly into the mics, but past them. Have the mics pointed toward the corner of you mouth and 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) away. The other option is to use a lavalier mic with the foam wind screen clipped to your lapel or between the top and second button of your shirt. I will do a short video to demonstrate .

great review. I bought this recorder because of your review. However, I cannot figure out how to pick up where I left off on a recording. Are we able to do this? If so, can you please tell me how?
Thanks Kristie. I'm glad you found it helpful. I'm not completely sure I understand your question. If you are recording and you need to stop for a little bit then pressing the PAUSE button ( II ) will pause the recording. Press it again when you are ready to start recording again. If you are using the AVR mode, when you stop speaking (or making whatever sound you are recording) the recorder will pause recording until you start speaking again. Also in AVR mode you can use the PAUSE button to pause recording when you don't want a certain portion of your conversation, or whatever, to be recorded. if it is something other than this that you are attempting, I would think the easiest way to deal with it is to simply record what you want to record as individual files on the recorder and then, if it is important that they become one continuous file, using a program like Audacity (free recording and editing, easy to use software) join the files into one eliminating any bits you don't want or need. Does that help? If not, let me know and we will figure out a solution to your problem.
