I'm not kidding this might be the ONLY mario game I disliked so much, I couldn't even get myself to finish it. Uninspired areas, characters and the gameplay with all the toad rescuing makes this just a really bad game in my opinion. Even in games like Sticker Star I had lots of fun. Yes, there’s a lot to hate about it, but it was still paper mario at it's core with unique areas with cool concepts to go through. Paper Jam had nothing of that. A series KNOWN for it's unique areas and crazy concepts and cool characters. And worst of all, the idea of combining the paper mario world with the real mario world has SO MUCH potential, yet it flopped so hard. I'm super excited to see the series return with a banger game. Glad I got this video in my recommended :)

The most enjoyable thing about Paper Jam (or "Paper Jam Bros.", as it is for some reason named over here) is actually, ironically enough, due to its lower quality, and that's its abundance of insane glitches. Said glitches include being able to clip out of bounds almost anywhere, being able to activate a cutscene during a load transition (which lets you move around while holding R to fast-forward, meaning you can move around at hyperspeed), or escaping a mission and then beating the final boss, causing you to be unable to return to said boss and thus bricking your file. This sheer level of brokenness (?) allows you to beat this otherwise very long-winded game in less than an hour, which I like to interpret as flipping the game off.

Super mario galaxy 2 will always be my favourite game of all time. I prefer it over galaxy 1 probably because I got this game first, so it’s more nostalgic to me. However, every galaxy is just pure fun and the game throws so many ideas at you that I think it's the superior game. I also reallyyy love the idea of traveling through the different atmospheres with your ship and that the atmosphere changes in the hub world depending on which world you are in. What really pushed this game to my favorite is probably the green stars. Some people see it as lazy content, but in my eyes it's an amazing addition. Green stars are in the most ABSURD places that makes me think I'm breaking the game and that is amazing, plus it's also really fun going back to all the stages and having a trip down memory lane. And of course, it ends with the coolest galaxy ever. Banger game, 11/10, would recommend this game again and again <3

Peach saying that about Luigi is where it really clicked how bad the bizarre cynisism towards Luigi was. She'd never say something like that about him, it was very out of character and almost made her feel like a mouthpiece for the script writer.

Very well-thought analysis of what most people missed when discussing the gameplay of Fury, there's just one small add-on that should have been mentioned on 3D World. While you already said how 3D World's level and world gameplay structure highlights the issue with repetition in the open-world genre, one of the issues I dislike the most just further proves the point, especially for 100%-ing. WHY THE HELL DO I NEED TO PLAY EACH GODDAMN LEVEL WITH EACH CHARACTER JUST TO GET THE CHARACTER'S STAMP?! THEY'RE THE CENTRAL FOCUS OF THE ENTIRE GAME AND SOMEHOW I'M FORCED TO REPEATEDLY COMPLETE EACH LEVEL IN A TOTAL OF 5 TIMES JUST TO COLLECT THEM! Also why Plessie was extremely fun to cruise around in the lake, the mention of Jaxi as a worse controllable character literally used for challenges (Moons) where the main difficulty is the controls further undermines this 'travel-issue'.

    - Make a crossover between two Mario RPG series that have some of the most unique characters & locations in the franchise at the time - Make the world in the crossover as generic as a Mario world can be with no characters specific to either series appearing or even mentioned (To keep the Sticker Star comparisons going, even Sticker Star mentioned Goombella at one point)

Stellar analysis. Loathe as I am to admit it, the City stuff didn’t even occur to me. Maybe that’s just a casualty of how minimally the game meditates on it. I didn’t like the ending either, but for me, the final straw was allowing the worlds to ultimately reunite last minute. I actually don’t mind splitting them apart, because it felt like one of the story’s few genuinely consequential decisions. Forcing Noah and the gang to choose between their ideals and relationships with each other is interesting because in all other respects, Xenoblade 3 seems terrified of exploring unchangeable loss. Don’t like that Ethel is dead? Complete this quest to revive her! Not sure about erasing Ghondor’s entire being? Don’t worry, she believes she’ll be inexplicably reborn as a perfect facsimile! Sad that the worlds ultimately split apart? My, is that Mio’s flute I hear? And then there’s Miyabi, Mwamba… the list goes on. I’m genuinely stunned by the decision to make loss meaningless in a story about war. I love this series and didn’t hate 3, but man did that game stomp all over its narrative stakes.

I think one thing that drove us up the wall about Tears of the Kingdom was it shoving Zelda and Ganondorf, *again* , into the exact same roles as they've always had. The series is supposed to be in an era of refresh, and yet the obsession with never letting these three stray from their designated roles made us outright dislike how they handled every one of them. I want to see a Ganondorf who isn't the bad guy. I want to see a *PLOT HEAVY* Zelda who doesn't have a carbon copy repeat of her last game. Like, this game includes time travel purely as a means to shove Zelda out of the picture, to fridge herself for a sword that doesn't even work, and *nothing* else??

For me, it's not the dungeons that matter in botw and totk, it's the journey to the dungeon. I don't think these games work with the dungeon concept, considering how the devs really did not want to lock the player into a linear area like past games do. However, it's the exploration and journey accompanied by each dungeon's respective character that makes it for me, and the games could be much stronger if the dungeons didn't focus on the puzzles but instead the boss fights or something else.

    • @somedude4487

Now, I also think, if the game requires dungeons, they should be like hyrule castle, specifically the underground path to ganondorf. Essentially I think they should be exploration-based, with many different enemies and obstacles, not puzzles, and a single end point, not terminals.

It helps establish the world and make Link more relateable, and gives him more real world responsibility. It's why I don't connect eith other Zelda games as much, Twilight Princess just has a unique charm that its long intro helps build.

I think your point about the Larry fight also puts into context why people find the combat in 64 and The Thousand-Year Door more fulfilling. Those games have proper progression systems, yes, but they still thrive on the strategization that Color Splash *attempts* to put into focus - especially before you obtain the Quick Change badge. Something that has baffled me since Sticker Star's release, however, is the games forcing you to defeat each group of enemies in a straight line. Although encounters are designed around this mechanic in some cases, like the Boo stack and Larry fights, I've always felt that it *limits* strategization and is another reason why combat in Sticker Star and Color Splash feel so unfulfilling. Using multiple attacks in a single turn is essentially a stand-in for having partners, but the lack of choice in how to utilize those turns is really off-putting.

While I am certainly someone who prefers the more serene and contemplative atmosphere of Galaxy 1, I absolutely agree that reducing the conversation around the games to “story vs gameplay” is unfair to both titles. I always hate when people say things like “Mario games aren’t known for their stories,” because, as you laid out, the emergent stories the games tell as one plays through them are, for many of us, the entire appeal of the series. I would argue that Galaxy 1 does have a better sense of narrative progression than you give it credit for, with Melty Molten Galaxy feeling like a perfect pre-climax that even ends with a cleverly remixed version of the first boss, but its true that this narrative is somewhat upended if you do not choose to play new galaxies as they become available. Ultimately I think I would argue Galaxy 1 has a “better” story simply because I prefer its gameplay, and thus, its emergent narrative beats, but you make some great points in favor of Galaxy 2. Really, it is a game whose presentation and emergent story still surpass many, many others, and that’s worth appreciating

I disagree with a lot your interpretation of the ending mostly cus I disagree with two of your interpretations of the themes themselves. I feel like we got something very different out of the games narrative. Honestly the DLC doubling down and being like “yes the worlds are connected in the ending” feels very interesting to me.
