It pains me that I experienced these games for the first time as a little kid who wasn't any good at platformers. Like, I can go back and play them again now, and frequently do, but I feel like I lost something from never being able to play this game 'for the first time' as a competent player.
Oh, trust me, I was not at all competent at video games when I first played this game. I literally got at least 5 game overs on the first mission of Good Egg Galaxy.
The interesting thing about Galaxy to me, is how varied opinions on the game are. The majority of people seem to like it, but a handful of Mario fans I know think it's not great. It's clunky to control; the grand scenario doesn't fit Mario's down-to-earth nature; the lore is too crazy; etc. I also know many people who think it's somewhere in the middle. The game may be clunky, but it's still fun to play. There's a lot of enjoyment to be had, and they have fond memories of the game. Some of these people tend to prefer Galaxy 2 for its more streamlined and enhanced gameplay ideas. I think I'm also somewhere in the middle. I think the way Galaxy controls is one of its biggest faults. Mario is slow and has very little options in his moveset. The spin-move is great, but imagine how much cooler it would be with movement like Sunshine or Odyssey. Anyway, the most interesting thing of all is how the casual fans view Super Mario Galaxy. A lot of the people I knew in High School... they didn't have Switches or care about Nintendo all that much. But they'd say Super Mario Galaxy is one of their favorite games. My older sister and her husband also see Galaxy as one of their favorite games. People love Super Mario Galaxy. The ways they chose to express the feeling of space hit people in a way that they haven't felt anywhere else. The analysis in this video helped me realize part of the elements that I never thought too hard about before. The feeling of "space" that they created for Galaxy is why, despite not appreciating the physics all too much, it remains such an influential and nostalgic game for me. Nothing else has really tried to tackle that vibe in the same way as Galaxy did.
I always felt like Super Mario Galaxy did something no other Mario game came remotely close to achieving. I first played the game when I was thirteen and already well-versed with videogames as a medium, but something about the game unexpectedly clicked with me. Yet whenever I tried to ask myself why I felt in this manner, I wouldn't really comprehend where to start. It's always just had this sort of aura that I felt attached to, in a sense. Perhaps that's the reason why I've never been able to replay it past my first playthrough, if that's even something I want to do in the first place. It's just one of those games that I just, can't extract the same 'vibe' from past the initial experience. This analysis puts into perspective some of those feelings to me, though. To be fully transparent, I almost forgot why I liked this game at all in more recent years. It's a little comforting to remember that yes, Super Mario Galaxy was a really special title, and it didn't just stick with me because, at the time I played it, I hadn't experienced as many games that impressed me in said regards.
i LOVE this video. The way everything ties together at the end is just so marvellous and the anecdotes were super interesting. I feel inspired to go blow the dust off my old wii console and boot up the game again, because you never know when a fun level might be the last one you ever play
i have NOT already seen this mario galaxy video. after the hundreds of videos about older titles, the video essays about marios and sonics or whatever, this is definitely one of my favorites. the stories from childhood are the perfect thing to accompany a nostalgia filled childhood title. i also like how you used the fireplace in the beginning, with the sound mixing it feels like your at a fireplace telling a story, its very cozy. the intellectual integrity story is excellent, made me wish my teachers were so insightful and made me think a ltitle too hard on my impact on this world. mario galaxy is cool, but genuinely i think the other bits were great to listen to and mash well with the mario parts. the story of watching your friend do bad things and watching without fear of punishment was also pretty interesting. same with your thoughts on non frequent gamers being very confused about things that are simple to us. my girlfriend is relatively new to gaming and despite gaming for years, still doesnt notice things i myself would find extremely obvious. i wonder, is there anything in the non-game world that would make me feel the way she does? who knows great video. have watched it quite a few times.
I was one of those weirdos who enjoyed my language arts classes in high school. I've had a lot of really cool and inspiring teachers of the years. It makes me sad that so many seem to have had the opposite experience.
if galaxy is a 9.9/10 then galaxy 2 is a 10/10 also you can just call mostly subjective criteria objective, like fun, you cant tell me whats fun and whats not in galaxy i was defiantly bored or frustrated a few time, while in galaxy 2 i quite literally had a blast from the beginning to the end tho i cant expect everyone's experience to be the same, this is just a piece of advice for your next videos

I found out that Super Mario Galaxy existed through a walkthrough guide on some website many years ago. There were screenshots included and I couldn't believe it was a real game, that's how amazing it looked. Great video, it should have at least 100 times more views!
I got recommended your new paper jam video yesterday, which was fantastic, and once I finished that one I immediately subscribed and looked at other videos on the channel. This one really blew me away. The mix of the satirical elements of "objective game reviews", with the stories from your own life that relate to the theming of the video, really great stuff. Love how experimental this is compared to other video essays like it. Will be happily waiting for whatever you decide to make next.
This is such a cool concept for a video and is exacuted so well. It's also perfect for a game as diverse and, at msny times, disconected as galaxy. I kept wanting one of the sections to talk about what I think is the coolest thing about the game, at least for me: the insatiable curiosity it nurtures in the player. It's something a lot of games lead people to feel, an itch to explore eveey nook and cranny and to go beyond. If you're older that beyond is dev worlds and scrapped content, and as a kit it's your endless imagination. There are so many things in this game that have always left me a bit irked. I want to explore the whole of the mansion in ghostly galaxy, the same as I could in luigi's mansion. I wanted more complex caves in beach bowl, to dig into the core of freezeflame's mountain and fire sphere, and to find another cove within deep dark. These are the levels that spoke to me, because they weren't just linear challanges but also spaces jam packed full of fun. Honeyhive is in this boat too, but it always sataified me. I don’t know why. But yeah, that phenomenon, I want someone to talk about it. It's not even just this game, games like ocorania of time have this phenomenon too. But the last section of this video gives me the answer to my want. As long as more peoppe have experiances related to the game, more videos can be made. So... I should make that video. Powerful message, thank you so much for making this.
P.S. Yes purple coin stars rock, especially the non timed ones! They encourage you to poke around and explore the space, even more non linearly than you already were/could. I love them, freezeflame purple coins is the best star in the game
Damn, I wish I saw this video for the first time while I was high. It had a similar vibe and structure as The Cursed Judges liminality through the lens of Trackmania-essay "Games That Don't Care About You". The way it all seemed like disconnected parts, kind of not understanding or forgetting what the video is supposed to be about, but you connecting them all and bringing it home at the end in such a beautiful and thought-provoking way. I highly recommend that video for anyone who enjoyed this, and amazing work to you for the video Alex! A clear favorite of mine!

Alternative title for chapter at 12:18 - An objectively bad way to review Super Mario Galaxy, or any game for that matter 🤣 That being said, I love the parody aspect of that chapter. Adds a fun spin on trying to do something new with the old. The whole entire video is great too! A meta-analysis on analysis itself is always fun to try to wrap your head around.
Absolutely beautiful video. I spent most of it wondering where you were going, but the ending tied it all together beautifully. It wasn't a collection of separate mini-essays, it was an explanation of how the game made you feel. What the game made you think about. It was a video about you, not really about Mario Galaxy. I guess I should've seen that coming given how some segments had... nothing to do with the game at all, but either way that realization was really beautiful to me. Great job! :) As for my story- Super Mario Galaxy shaped a lot of what I love in video games. I didn't play a ton of games before Galaxy; while I really enjoyed the ones I did try, they were mostly just distractions. Really fun distractions I loved, but distractions. Super Mario Galaxy was the first game I cried while playing, and it was during the ending (of course). I was so profoundly invested in the game at that point, and seeing all of the Lumas sacrifice themselves to save the world was... heartbreaking. I was overjoyed to have beaten Bowser, mortified at what the Lumas were doing, confused about what the hell Rosalina was saying, bittersweet that the journey was over... I felt so many emotions while playing though the ending. While I'm down to give just about any video game a shot, I don't think it's a coincidence that my preferences lean towards linear platformers with an emphasis on atmosphere. Mario Galaxy singlehandedly shaped what I look for most in games. There's so much I appreciate about it, and it even feels like I find something new to love every time I play it! It's left such an impression on me and is my favorite game ever. No matter how long it's been since I last played it, it is- and probably always will be- the purest form of art to me. Thank you for sharing your story. I really wish there was more content out there like this- not trying to be "objective" or "correct", but instead, trying to be human. I personally find it ironic that you should mention physical sensations of playing a game and wonder about AI being able to put together a game that feels satisfying. Because I think that this is what Galaxy fails at the most. It feels sluggish to control, the movement itself bound to the gravity mechanics, making Mario himself less satisfying to move around than in 64, Sunshine or Odyssey. This might not be too important to some people - it might play even into the more somber atmosphere for some - but it's the reason why this duology firmls sits at the bottom of all 3D Mario games for me and why I've grown so tired of them being praised as "perfect" often times.
I'll definitely admit the gravity mechanics often make Mario a bit wonky to control, but I've always enjoyed the movement in the Galaxy games more so than 64 or Sunshine. Odyssey is definitely my favorite in terms of movement though, that's for sure.

ive definitely seen mario galaxy videos before where they relate the emotional impact of the game's atmosphere to their life and use it to bring up a personal story. in that way i have seen this video before, and yet the specifics of your story and your experiences to share are wholly unique to you.
its all a sense of scale then? genuinly, a fantastic throughline to chose for covering this game ina new way. from literal, metaphorical, cosmological, emotionaly, the scale of reviews, and how big and small begin to bleed a bit at the edges when zooming out so far. even the joke powerpoint review, its a scale of impact on that one level, or the lack of scale in statment that gave a rather nice pause in the middle of the videos near constant chamge of direction to zoom out in. i mever realy thought about how the scale of the game is to me in such differing ways, but im glad you wanted to show me.
I still find it odd that there are not that many games like SMG. Whist there are some that can convey similar feelings of spfic elements like scale (no man's sky) theres no game that directly compeates or challanges SMG. Maybe both SMG 1 and 2 where so good that there was no competition needed. Honestly it just creates a strange vibe around the game that really makes them special.
This video helped me to understand why I felt out of love with Galaxy. After considering it and it's sequel as my "favourite game of all time", coming back to 100% it again on Switch two more times it disappointed me. I actually started on writing my own essay style document (got around 3.000 words in), but I got stuck writing about 'objective' part of the gameplay. I could not see why people liked Galaxy so much and still recieves so much praise. The atmosphere, music, the Comet Observatory, I still loved it all, but it didn't 'land' anymore. When you described Mario as small at 3:02, I thought you were going to say he feels big. As a kid Mario felt small, he was exploring all kind of different solar systems and unique galaxies. Now the planets feel small. Mario is normal sized and no planet feels like an actual planet. They all feel like models. It made me wonder: what if Mario galaxy was exactly the same, but without space? What if the Comet Observatory was replaced with a town where Toad houses function as the domes? What if there were no Lumas, but it were simple exchange machines? What if the soundtrack was the same as the New Super Mario Bros games? Would Galaxy still be as beloved today? I still find a lot of postives in Galaxy and some design choices are ingenious. But a lot don't work on me as I grew older. I don't have to wander around the Comet Observatory scouring for 1-up mushrooms. Feeding hungry lumas don't give intrinsic joy anymore, they are just a way to get acces to another star I already got years ago. Maybe I will go back writing my, more negative, essay later, but for now I think I got the answer to the question that I had the past weeks thanks to this video. The game got so much acclaim because it transferred Mario in to space, while now for me it feels like just models in a videogame.
The satire of review essays was too good. Need more of this sort of experimentation with other TH-camrs.

Galaxy 2 is only really better from a level design standpoint. The first Galaxy feels so much grander with its story elements.

I don't fully understand what this video is about but it's actually amazing I rate it 9.9/10
I personally find it ironic that you should mention physical sensations of playing a game and wonder about AI being able to put together a game that feels satisfying. Because I think that this is what Galaxy fails at the most. It feels sluggish to control, the movement itself bound to the gravity mechanics, making Mario himself less satisfying to move around than in 64, Sunshine or Odyssey. This might not be too important to some people - it might play even into the more somber atmosphere for some - but it's the reason why this duology firmls sits at the bottom of all 3D Mario games for me and why I've grown so tired of them being praised as "perfect" often times.
I'll definitely admit the gravity mechanics often make Mario a bit wonky to control, but I've always enjoyed the movement in the Galaxy games more so than 64 or Sunshine. Odyssey is definitely my favorite in terms of movement though, that's for sure.

ive definitely seen mario galaxy videos before where they relate the emotional impact of the game's atmosphere to their life and use it to bring up a personal story. in that way i have seen this video before, and yet the specifics of your story and your experiences to share are wholly unique to you.

genuinly, a fantastic throughline to chose for covering this game ina new way. from literal, metaphorical, cosmological, emotionaly, the scale of reviews, and how big and small begin to bleed a bit at the edges when zooming out so far. even the joke powerpoint review, its a scale of impact on that one level, or the lack of scale in statment that gave a rather nice pause in the middle of the videos near constant chamge of direction to zoom out in.
i mever realy thought about how the scale of the game is to me in such differing ways, but im glad you wanted to show me.
probably got like at least 100 game overs on level 3 of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3ds personally.
The "Games are a Language" section using the visual language of Mario sleeping to communicate boredom is awesome

I still find it odd that there are not that many games like SMG.
Whist there are some that can convey similar feelings of spfic elements like scale (no man's sky) theres no game that directly compeates or challanges SMG.
Maybe both SMG 1 and 2 where so good that there was no competition needed. Honestly it just creates a strange vibe around the game that really makes them special.

before watching this video i asked myself, have I already watched this, then I read the title but wasn't convinced, and it turns out I didn't

This video helped me to understand why I felt out of love with Galaxy. After considering it and it's sequel as my "favourite game of all time", coming back to 100% it again on Switch two more times it disappointed me. I actually started on writing my own essay style document (got around 3.000 words in), but I got stuck writing about 'objective' part of the gameplay. I could not see why people liked Galaxy so much and still recieves so much praise. The atmosphere, music, the Comet Observatory, I still loved it all, but it didn't 'land' anymore.
When you described Mario as small at 3:02, I thought you were going to say he feels big.
As a kid Mario felt small, he was exploring all kind of different solar systems and unique galaxies.
Now the planets feel small. Mario is normal sized and no planet feels like an actual planet. They all feel like models.
It made me wonder: what if Mario galaxy was exactly the same, but without space? What if the Comet Observatory was replaced with a town where Toad houses function as the domes? What if there were no Lumas, but it were simple exchange machines? What if the soundtrack was the same as the New Super Mario Bros games? Would Galaxy still be as beloved today?
I still find a lot of postives in Galaxy and some design choices are ingenious. But a lot don't work on me as I grew older. I don't have to wander around the Comet Observatory scouring for 1-up mushrooms. Feeding hungry lumas don't give intrinsic joy anymore, they are just a way to get acces to another star I already got years ago.
Maybe I will go back writing my, more negative, essay later, but for now I think I got the answer to the question that I had the past weeks thanks to this video. The game got so much acclaim because it transferred Mario in to space, while now for me it feels like just models in a videogame.
