The problem with hybrid training
In this video, I react to a TikTok discussing the expectations vs. reality of hybrid training and why it’s not designed for aesthetics. Drawing from my own experience, I explore how hybrid training, including events like Hyrox, is all about performance and functional strength, not looking 'shredded.' Many influencers in this space spent years bodybuilding before transitioning to hybrid training, giving a false impression. I also dive into how different rep ranges build muscle strength vs. size, and why focusing on aesthetics could actually hinder your progress. Plus, for plus-size athletes, this type of training is incredibly empowering because it shifts the focus to what your body can do, rather than how it looks.

Yeah it is real but the impact isn’t as significant as first thought as I referenced
Don’t discount simply being lucky and not having to work that hard to look good. Reality is that happens for some people and they over hype their work on social media to sell themselves. Harsh but true reality.
100% true! i find it really frustrating when fitness influencers attribute a large, if not all part of their strength/skill JUST to hard work and don't acknowledge genetics/life privilege etc. Theres an awful trend where people string together fitness clips with the caption: 'she/he's so lucky!' and then show themselves supposedly 'working hard' implying there is no element of luck at all. Of course people may work hard to achieve x strength/skill, but the lack of acknowledgement for luck and life circumstance is bewildering to me.
As someone who's been into fitness for over two decades, I promise you - very few people have this luck. A more correct analysis would be that they're cheating, i.e. drugs.

Haha you don't have to tell me twice. I've been working with a PT for 2 years and I'm bigger than before 😂 I have accepted me going to the gym is about habit, joint and bone health, mental health, aging with strength and building community. It used to be for appearance until I accepted I will eat until I'm full and that's that. 😅

love your content. agree with this, when I was seriously running marathons and weekly training (30+ miles) I could never put on serious muscles. Now I look similar to Nick Bare and do 12/3/30 and walking as my cardio regularly. Or if you really want to be nick do a lot of gear.
I used to be like this but then I started going into a caloric surplus (3500 calories per day) 200g of protein. Took me 8 months but was able to build a lot of mass and even when I went into caloric deficit (from 202 pounds to 174) I kept my strength and looked bigger. I also just walked during my caloric deficit period never ran. I would walk 1-2 hours per day after lifting weights.

If I didn’t already have a trainer I love, I’d happily buy your program. As a beginner weightlifter, I love watching your videos. I love seeing a strong mom who can lift heavy weights. It makes me feel like if I keep working and being consistent, maybe I can get that strong too, even though I’m a busy mom too. I hope you don’t take the negativity to heart. People love to tear women down, but you are actually motivating real women to get stronger and fitter.

I agree that you’re working hard in the gym and it’s awesome to want to be an inspiration for people of any size to be working out. Yes, fitness is testable but to say it isn’t directly related to size is incorrect; that is in direct opposition with any scientific evidence that we have on fitness and disease prevention. No ones is saying to be skinny or underweight, even a little overweight is probably fine; but being obese is not. I’m in the same boat as you and I feel strong in the gym but the obesity does hold me back but being even better in and out of the gym.

We really just making up new rules now…. I used to follow this account because I thought it was an inspirational journey. Now I realize she’s just making excuses and looking for acceptance. I totally agree! We should focus on our strengths and not expect to be good at everything. You’re going to crush the sleds in the race! I’m doing my first HYROX on Oct 5th in Toronto! The running and burpee broad jumps are more my pace and I’ll surely struggle through the sled movements but I’ll make it through- eventually 😅

You know what is so amazing is the level of fitness that sportybeth must have. She did this workout in 30 minutes and then a 100 meter sprint and never broke a sweat. Elite athletes can’t do that. How is sportybeth not participating in elite events? It’s baffling.
