SKIING JAPAN: A Backcountry Ski Shop in Japan
This is my go to shop for any equipment that I need for the ski season, or for any season for that matter. Shugaso has 3 locations in Hokkaido. Two of the shops are in Sapporo and one of the shops is in Asahikawa.
There are multiple floors of equipment and clothing and I have always found the service to be exceptional. The staff are very knowledgeable and are keen to offer assistance. In terms of sizes for larger people, they seem to order in clothing that fits me and I am a large. For boots and I am probably on the edge of what they would order, a 27.5 which is a U.S 9.5.
It is always interesting to see the type of equipment in this kind of shop, especially if you are from outside of Japan. You will find some quirky items, like the raccoon arse warmer!
Be careful of days that they shops don't operate. Monday is the day off in Asahikawa and the shop closest to the center of Sapporo. I think that it is Thursday for the Shiroishi shop.

SKIING JAPAN: What’s it Like Skiing Asahidake?
มุมมอง 3.6K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Asahidake is probably one of the most misunderstood ski destinations in Hokkaido. In recent years it's popularity has exploded. One of the reasons is the quality of the snow that you will often ski here and the regular snowfalls during the winter season. It is the only real lift served skiing in the Daisetsuzan National Park, discounting Kurodake with the short 150 vertical lift at the top of t...
SKIING JAPAN: Backcountry Skiing near Niseko, Hokkaido
มุมมอง 5945 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a bit of a regular spot for backcountry skiers visiting the Niseko area. The terrain is some of the steepest that you can access around Niseko and the snow quality is always very good. One of the good things about backcountry skiing in Hokkaido is that it is very accessible. The approaches aren't so long so that you can get the maximum amount of vertical in a day. And hot springs are ne...
SKIING JAPAN: Testing Pomoca Free Pro 2.0 Skins
มุมมอง 1.4K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Skins are one of the most important pieces of equipment that you have. With the job of guiding I look to have the best that I can buy. Recently, more and more of my colleagues using Pomoca skins and they seemed to function very well. So I decided to buy some Pomoca Free Pro 2.0 skins. The local mountain shop in Sapporo that I usually go to had some in the size that I needed, so I reserved them....
JAPAN SKIING: A Spring Day at ASAHIDAKE
มุมมอง 1.1K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
There is still good Powder skiing at Asahidake in March. One thing I like about later in the season is that we have better weather. There are many days at asahidake here during January and February where visibility is very low. It was a busy day initially but for the ropeway, but soon dissipated. SKIING JAPAN: Ski Touring in Tokachidake
มุมมอง 1.3K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
There is a lot of really good touring options in the Tokachidake area which is at the southern end of the Daisetsuzan Park. This is really the center of Backcountry skiing in Hokkaido. There are multiple access points into the mountains from here And there is genuine alpine terrain. The tree skiing is also very good in the old growth spruce forests. Today we had beautiful weather as it was the ...
SKING JAPAN: A Record Breaking Powder Day in Niseko
มุมมอง 7K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
There are deep days and then there a deep days in Niseko. This was one of those very deep days with it the gates only barely opened due to the incredible amount of snow that fell in 48 hours. We had been lining up at the cheer on moiwa and a patroller sneaked in front of us. It was perfect timing as when we got to the top he was just opening gate six. There were three others in front of us and ...
SKIING JAPAN: Skiing the live volcano of Mt Tokachi
มุมมอง 1K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Mount Tokachi is a live volcano at the southern end of the Daisetsuzan national Park. Actually the live volcano is “Mae Takashi” or “Front Tokachi.” The main peak is actually behind it. On this day we had a group from Scotland and Australia. It’s not often that you can combine really good weather with fantastic snow but today we had it. The wind steadily increased and at the peak it was a very ...
SKI JAPAN: Snowmobile Assisted Backcountry
มุมมอง 96110 หลายเดือนก่อน
We have been running backcountry skiing tours With Snowmobile assistance for a number of years now. On this day we had the antipodean crew of Stephen, Terry and Sue. Stephen was on a split board and came out with us 10 years prior with snowshoes. Maybe it wasn’t the deepest day of the season but certainly some of the best quality snow that I have skied during 23/24. Chuck is the director of Hok...
SKIING JAPAN: Checking the Tokachidake Snowpack
มุมมอง 1.9K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
In early December we always go up into the Daisetsuzan National Park to check the snow pack. Just across the valley from Furano is the Tokachidake area which is at the southern end of the range. The main objective is to see the depth of the snow and the coverage. It can take a while to ski safely up there as there are bushes which grow over 2 meters and these need to be covered. We will look at...
SKI JAPAN: Asahidake, the Live Volcano
มุมมอง 2.9K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Any day where there is good visibility at asahidake is a good day! It is great to be able to see the billowing fumaroles on the volcano. When you combine the good visibility with great snow then you’ll have an amazing day. Up until this season and there hasn’t been a ski patrol at asahidake yet but it seems like they now have a volunteer patrol. They may not be in attendance every day but it is...

Mount Yotei looms large over the Niseko area. It is otherwise known as the ‘Fuji of the North.’ This wasn’t a day that we were expecting to get to the peak and caldera. A descending Japanese group that they had stopped at the tree line because it was wind affected. We had...

Do you just take the gondola up and ski down? Wondering if downhill only set up is good to ski there or do I need a backcountry set up
Best with a bc setup as terrain from the gondola can get tracked out quickly on a busy day
@@bikerider270 what do you mean tacked out? asking because I only have downhill skiing experience but would still like to ski asahidake
Great to see you back. Really enjoy your films.
Many thanks!
I'm looking to purchase a pair of cheap radios, the ones that don't need a licence. Do you know a store in Furano that would sell this style of radio? Thanks!
Unfortunately I don’t. You could try DCM Hardware store when you arrive. Or best to order online before arriving
I think I saw you in their other shop in Asahikawa last year on one of the rainy days 😂 in feb.
Haha. Coincidence. Maybe I like gear!
How do you look? 😂 G'day from Tas Chuck!
Hey Bishwa! Coming over this season?
Looks like a good shop. When you say “toe” what kind of toe are you referring to?
The toe of the boot. The older version of Dynafit Hoji didn’t have a toe section which was meant to be better skinning and pivoting further back.
@@bikerider270 I’ll look into it. Thanks.
An interesting discussion. A very important point missed was a discussion about rocker. The growing increase in rocker, tip and rail, has made a HUGE effect on float as well as under foot #. If you took your 95 ski from 15 years ago and added the ton of rocker the big fat skies have(38-50% or more) you'd find they ski pow a whole lot better. Conversely, if you took all the massive rocker out of the big fatties they would ski not nearly as well.
Good point Rick. Thanks for that.
What time of year was this?
January
Glopping is a result of walking around with your skis when one ought to be gliding.
Haha. Yes I must have been walking those damn things!
Hey is Ken still guiding Furano ? I’m a kiwi heading over end of Dec 2024 . Blair
Yes he is
Hi there. Looking for guiding for Feb. do you have Kens info? Cheers
As I understand it "Russell" refers to the Russell snowplows used to clear railway tracks.
Interesting
haven't summited this beauty yet, my last attempt was back in 2018 and had to turn back at 1500m. Gonna try to knock it out before 2025
The summit can sometimes be elusive. Always good skiing though. Wish you good weather and snow for your next attempt.
It is clear that you are an expert skier. However your comments may influence skiers of less ability to choose 124's in either Furano or Niseko and that is fraught with danger. It's fine on piste, but in the trees, skiing the fall line? Great video but really needs a disclaimer. Although lesser skiers probably can't ski the fall line in trees.
Good point. Thanks for your comment.
Nobody can tell me the origins of russuru (Russell). It's an odd thing. A lot of Japanese lie to practice Russell to get in shape. Sometimes I'm lucky. My friends from Utah come to visit and they take care of all the trailbreaking. They are beasts and they set the steepest skin tracks. it's all I can do to keep them in sight. 🤣
Ahh, very good friends to have!
I tell you that this is crap. If you don't have energy to hike so small amount of vertical then you shouldn't be doing it. Heliskiing in Hokkaido is for fat people. Just so damn awful.
"Just a wee drop" 😀
Cant wait to late Jan, will be there
See you this winter! We meet eachother at beer cellar Sapporo last winter. Take care from Paris, France <3
Yes I remember. See you next season!
Yep paradise. Hopefully not too busy next season 😂
In about 20 weeks that snow will be back in business!
That place is beautiful! Awesome video
It really is!
Good choice
You don’t actually have to pre-tension the clip before attaching to skis tail. Attach it a tad loose and then pull on the strap to get the tension you want.
Thanks for good tip
Just what we needed a bit of skiing. Weather in Switzerland is awful 😞 btw those field earths in the show are something special as well.
Field Earth?
Your jackson hole crew all love and use these pomocos (fyi, i do find I need to press them down once on the ski so snow doesn't get under and I also sometimes do the back clip off on the side then slip to the back as easier) enjoy!
Great. Thanks!
Really good stuff on the skins. Feels like you’ve brought us along.
Let us know why skins you are using for the backcountry

Good review, met you this year in Furano, I’ll definitely be back, would love to see you show off some of the super light snow that Furano is famous for. 🙏✅
Hope to catch you again
Great conditions!
Always happy to see you have a a new video when it pops up on my feed, hopefully a good end of the season with plenty of spring days like that
Excellent vid. Conditions are good here. Customers are happy.
Was this second week of January? I was there!! It was insane, also funny story, that guy we see at seven eleven freaked out on me because I forgot to take the lid off of the smoothie containers they sell. I messed up the machine pretty bad and he kept looking at me saying f%#k you!!!! 😂😂
He can be prickly
When did this happen?
First week of January
Howdy guys - nice film. We've been in Furano the last seven days and we're coming back next year as well. Planning to do Asahidake then. If you're in for the treelines only, Is it possible to do that from the top of the gondola or do you have to skin as well? Thanks
Can do from top of rope way.
Loving the content
Thank you
If you dont mind me asking, I see you are wearing orange jacket, yellow layer then another orange layer, do you have a base layer under the orange layer or is the orange piece your base layer?
I have a synthetic base layer under orange layer. Orange layer over base has been retired and back to mid layer I had been wearing previously; very thin Polartec fleece which is similar to grid style
Definitely the best yet ! ;-) Thanks CHUCK
Glad you joined
Excellent! Our snowmobile business is doing good as well. It was a good business decision to find new terrain. Get away from the crowds and amateur guides. We’ll get some helicopter 🚁 access as well this season.
Could you send me some contact info for next year?
Very professional operation you got. I'd recommend my clients to you.
Great place to ski and board. A lifetime experience.
Awesome
Awesome!! Which route did you follow?
Thanks for filming another epic ski adventure. Ignore the negative.
Appreciate your comment
We all know how easy it is to set a "steep" skin track in powder as the trail breaker....4/5th person maybe not that easy to follow. Set a track with recycling in mind :) Although it didn't actually look that steep...
Thanks Dee for your comment
Cheers for comment
