  • There are many skin manufacturers out there, but which perform the best in Hokkaido conditions?
What Are Hokkaido conditions first of all?Well, we ski deep powder snow from December through to the end of March. Temperatures are cold, particularly in the prime powder months of January and February.
Of prime importance is the quality of the glue. It is not uncommon to do three changeovers during a backcountry day in Hokkaido. Over the years we have seen many failures of skins which is all to do with the glue not sticking by the third change over.
Richard Has been using Pomoca skins this season and has been extremely happy with them. The glue seems to be the perfect strength of sticking to the skis after a number of changeovers and easily pulled apart when stuck together.
I have been using Black Diamond ‘Ascension’ skins for the past three seasons and they have served me very well. The glue is extremely sticky and so are dependable. One small drawback is you have to use some sort of backing on the skins during the day otherwise it can get really difficult to pull them apart when sticking them together.
Regardless of the skins that you have, a recommendation is to buy some Black Diamond ‘Gold Label’ skins glue before coming to Hokkaido and apply a small amount to the edges of your skins.
It’s also a good idea to have a few extra straps in your pack just in case the skins fail.

@@bikerider270 Thank you! Number one brand it seems from reviews. On a wide powder ski I see that glide is more important than friction due to the large surface area, so a mohair blend rather than full nylon is called for.
