First 28 miles on the Colorado Trail - Segments 1 & 2
I start my week long thru hike trek on the Colorado Trail beginning on Segment 1 in Waterton Canyon. Me and Amanda hike all the way up to Bighorn Sheep rest area at Strontia Springs Reservoir. We camp 12 miles in on Segment 1 to finish our first day. On day two we reach Segment 2 at the South Platte River where we stock up on water before hiking through the rest of this hot and exposed segment. We camp at the end of Segment 2 less than a mile out from Segment 3.

    From 1977-1980, I lived on the line every free moment I had . I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB in Rapid city. I’m a huge CB&Q railroad enthusiast and their line ( now a trail) through the black hills has been my addiction . A gentleman named Rick Mills has written a couple of great books and numerous magazine articles about the route . Thank you so much for this excellent trip down memory lane on a path I’ll never trod again

    Are there multiple trails or just one? If multiple, do they all include tree skiing?

    • @zrey17
      @zrey17 ปีที่แล้ว

      You hike from Timber Ridge/The Outpost and from there decide where to go. You follow the cat tracks up to the top of the bowls and decide which one to hike. There is tree skiing after yes from Bergman bowl specifically you do have to follow a specific trail out or you risk getting stuck. Best trees are off of North Bowl which you hike from the Outback chair.

    • @zrey17
      @zrey17 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is ample parking at the trailhead but unfortunately I don’t know if you can park there for multiple days. I’d imagine it’s fine to do so. Their website will have more info or someone to contact on it. I believe the trail is maintained by the state.

    • @zrey17
      @zrey17 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Late June would be better for sure. I don’t know the snow the black hills got this year but your probably still good in May. Conditions are better in October because it hasn’t started snowing yet whereas in May your waiting for snow to melt.

    Zach, I typed in Yellowstone Falls overlook and found your video. I was reminiscing of the Summer I worked in Yellowstone and the many days we spent exploring the park. I recalled being on a ledge over the falls and almost feeling the pull of the water (mentally) to follow it. It's a feeling I've had many times at other waterfalls. Am I nuts? Seeing the wildlife and Mammoth - terrific. We went one night to a place on the Firehole River and went swimming by moonlight in water warmed by the springs, geysers, etc. So much to marvel at in the great US West. That summer was in 1964 - I was in college. Thanks for helping this old guy recapture some of that magic.
