I have one of these and it lacks the power it had last year. carbs have no gunk in them i adjusted the floats as the fuel was leaking by and prime bulb wasn't getting hard. adjusted carbs it runs and idles well most the time. sometimes it will not idle at all. Any ideas?

put a temp sender and temp gauge on it you wont get any warning horn if the temp sensor is bad in my experience these old temp sensors rust out and dont work you can disconnect the temp sensor wire at the knife cionnection turn on key and ground wire to head should sound the horn in the controller but that dont mean the sensor is good also under the thermostat housing there should be to springs and poppet valves that only open under high rvs or pressure allowing water out the 2 holes otherwise they just drip

If 4 strokes we around in the 80s why were they not popular? Being carby, did they chug lots of fuel still? Were 2 strokes just lighter and faster so more popular?

Didn't even realize they were running. Holy crap.

Looks like an exhaust gasket leak. Probably on the main exhaust cover. Letting exhaust gas get in to to water galleries and it rises up the block and out the telltale. And that same gasket or the outer cover one is letting water out. Might honestly just be lose or broken bolts on the whole exhaust cover.

Few props have smacked the inside of that metal barrel lol. We use the big rubber ones at my marina I work at for that reason. 50 gallon garbage cans work too but they cut easy. I like the 50 gallon plasctic drum idea.

4 strokes are slow especially mercury back when optimax was still around they were good much better holeshot and really good oil mileage

That "shit" is oil from the smoke that appeared when you revved the engine. Your engine is running too rich or your fuel is mixed with to much oil
