Excellent, thoughtful video as always, Jo. I especially liked your thought about reviewing beliefs. We had our provincial elections last autumn and while we were walking to the polling station I told my husband that I was still considering who to vote for, which was unusual as I'm usually pretty constant in my political viewpoint but this time around, in such a shook up world, I was really having to consider my beliefs and which candidate/party best reflected them (even if they didn't get in). I was surprised when he confessed that he was in the same boat and we had a really good discussion about the situation on the way to the rec centre to cast our votes.

Great video again. I can put a date on when I finally showed up, 4th July 2024. When you lack self confidence and overthink how people see you, you live life under the radar. I mentioned last June to someone close to me that I was planning to change and even start a youtube channel as I was now in my 60s and my self consciousness needed to go..or I'd forever be hidden under a stone. Their reaction was "but why YOU? Who's going to watch?". My answer was "why NOT me?". The conversation stumbled on and they seemed horrified but I was so annoyed that I just did it....for me. @@JoBlackwell-MidlifeAndBeyond Thanks! I stopped ignoring my health, drinking alcohol, buying things I don’t need, listening to other opinions and overcommitting myself. I started building strength, prioritizing sleep, thinking of life outside of work more than work itself, created a morning and evening ritual that really works for me, and practicing gratitude.

A lot of what has prevented me from being my so-called authentic self, has been caused by me imposing upon myself norms and expectations that have crept in over a lifetime. I can be at home all alone, with no one there to judge me or expect anything from me, and realize that my entire pattern of thought is immersed in these cultural behaviors to a point that it is hard to separate them from my inner self. I do recognize the issue, though, but it is a major soul search to peel all that away to expose my real pure self and go from there. Like you say, we are made to play so many roles in life (for me its the daughter, the wife, the mother, the mother-in-law, the sister, the aunt, the sister in law, the chef, the employer, the ski instructor…I mean, just look at the line-up! ) that it can be hard to find out who we really are. Life is a journey!! Thank you for your profound and thoughtful insight 😊

@@thefinefrugalline3232 I just think back to when I was very young, say 5, 6, or 7 yrs old, and reconnect-- that is who we are, are likes and dislikes, our true character, before it got corrupted by negative influences, maybe.

It really is like peeling an onion. The more layers of cultural behaviours we expose, the more appear and it gradually starts to become apparent what is “society” and what is “us”. 💐

@JoBlackwell-MidlifeAndBeyond Yes, and we can start to separate our real identity from our outside influences I believe, since I've practiced doing that myself as part of emotional healing technique some years ago. It was eye-opening for me.

At 70 I've never been more authentic. I think, in part, that as we age we begin to care less what others think of us. Then when we retire there are fewer people around to pass judgment which frees us up to show who we are, have always been, and are the best version of ourselves.

    1. Stop measuring yourself against others, accept you for you and pursue what makes you happy. 2. Learn lots of practical useful skills, that gives you self confidence (this includes making budgeting habitual). 3. Don't ever see processed foods as "easy" or "treats". Fuel yourself with good essential basics. Great positivity subject to talk about Jo.
