    Bonsoir from the South of France Jo 👋
    Thank you for letting me mention my baby YT channel 'Found in France' here. As you know i'm another late baby boomer focusing on being 62 and solo in France. Personally I have been had a bit if an epiphany recently about accepting myself and letting things go and i now feel that i am more content than ever before. That's quite a shock after being clinically depressed 3 years ago. It's also one of the major motivators for kickstarting my channel because I think it's so important that people know that clouds pass.
    I really admire you wanting to do your doctorate. My brain doesn't retain information any more so just learning Spanish is muy dificil! The editing is a challenge too but I love the creativity and learning from it.

    So pleased to find your channel, Jo and thanks too for the further context you provided today.💐 I think your doctoral study plans/proposal are excellent and the integration between your channel and scholarship is, I'm sure, achievable👍. I'm sixty, married with three adult children and a grandchild) and in Sydney. I'm an English teacher -cum-private tutor(primary and secondary students)- cum writer. I currently combine tutoring with writing. With regard to the latter, I'm entering short story competitions (only three to date, early days). I consider myself an apprentice and I'm happy to forge ahead, not sure yet as to whether to pursue a writing course or press on with the completed novel manuscript I have which may, upon further editing, be suitable for self-publication. My thinking has been along these lines: have a finished manuscript on my computer and in the desk drawer, enter writing competitions and commence a course, not the other way round. I've overcome clinical depression and manage anxiety. In my case, this corresponds with my faith as a Christian.( I've been able to come off meds).🙏 In terms of You tube, I find the conversational-moderately structured approach relatable and helpful. I'm finding this age challenging but creatively brimming with possibility. I'm sure there can be an inspiring and purposeful conversation. 💌

      Thank you for watching and coming to introduce yourself! It helps to “know” some of the people who are watching. This sudden surge of interest is exciting but a bit overwhelming at times, if I’m honest! All good though - I’m “leaning in” as they say.
      As a writer myself, I think that’s a sensible approach to your career. If you go that route you will have the confidence that you can complete an entire novel. Then you can hone your craft if you want to with courses etc. If you start with the theory it might derail you as you become overly critical of your work! I don’t know if you are able to access this in Australia, but the BBC have an affordable subscription called “Maestro” which features several writers. I enjoyed listening to JoJo Moyes talk about the elements of a love story for example. www.bbcmaestro.com/explore
      Also, as an English teacher I’m sure you know the mechanics of writing and what makes a good story! You might want to study the business side, the nuts and bolts of self publishing which isn’t difficult, but does have a steep learning curve. Just my 2 cents.
      Oh, and please be wary of self publishing “services”.
      Finally, I wanted to say that it sounds like you have found what Margaret Mead called your “post menopausal zest”! A surge of energy and creativity that will carry you forward and hopefully help you leave anxiety and depression in the past.
      I’m planning a live in the future with a writer to talk about the surge of creativity we often experience at this time in our lives. I’ll try not to make it in the middle of the antipodean night! Good luck!

    I totally agree about the in-person yoga class! For many years I’ve attended one & so enjoy the camaraderie. I don’t socialize much, so that weekly class is nice. I was attending yoga 4-5 times a week at a fitness center & loved that, but the pandemic brought those activities to a screeching halt. Keep up the good work. Since you asked, I like a mix of environments for videos. The same background and a talking head all the time gets dull and I have trouble focusing. So I like changing it up with the LR talk and the walk and talk and the car talk (although thank you for being parked, there is a creator who talks and drives and I worry about them). I have considered creating a channel and content myself at age 56 but I have just started a doctorate and I still have teenagers at home plus one in college so I worry about the time. I appreciate your straightforward and vulnerable manner. Don’t change it!

    • @JoBlackwell-MidlifeAndBeyond
      @JoBlackwell-MidlifeAndBeyond  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for taking the trouble to comment. Do you mean you prefer scene changes in the same video? do things like the appearance of text and photos etc help? I agree a static talking head can get boring (and no, I’d never try to drive and film 😳 plus it’s illegal to even touch your phone when driving here!) Personally, I don’t like too many rapid fire effects as they make my head spin!
      What would your channel be about? So long as you post consistently I don’t think it needs to be weekly. It depends on what you want from it - to build a community or as a hobby? It does take time to learn all the things. But it’s very rewarding.

    I am starting to do more talking on my channel about being in my mid 50s now. I have been on TH-cam now for a few years, but mostly just about baking and tutorials. But now I am ready to talk. I also will not touch on politics or religion. But I want to let others in a little about my life and their thoughts too. My first video I just put up on my feelings is Mid-life from a 55 year old woman. And then I took it down since i was overly criticizing myself. But just this morning I put it back up again. There are far more experienced creators than me that can help, but I can definitely encourage! What I can say is:
      *Work out the purpose of your channel and who you want to reach
      *Spend time watching and learning from others both in your niche and generally
      *Learn the skills you need, like filming, lighting editing etc (just basics are enough) **just checked out your channel and can see you've already done this!**
      *Just do it - be prepared to make bad videos and have low views, and see every one as an opportunity to learn.
