      i think as always have to keep in mind that this was a practice designed around a 12-18 year olds body and so many of these postures -such as marichyasana D - for an adult are simply not going to be in the range of average mobility….

    Loved this one so much, Adam !!! I had to work on my deep rooted need for internal and external validation while facing fresh injuries in a room full of acrobatic yogis in Mysore. One of the most brutal lessons ever. But now, for example, when I let go of the 'bind' (knowing very well that I can bind) respecting the aches and pains, it feels like a more advanced act to be honest. From channeling and letting out my anger into the practice to pushing into the poses and now to finding softness has been such a wild ride and a huge transition that cannot be seen from outside or in the 'ideal' shapes.

    • @keenonyoga
      @keenonyoga วันที่ผ่านมา

      yes, what occurred to me on re-reading your comment is that, as you say, it’s a ‘wild ride’ enough already; we don’t need the person who’s meant to be guiding us on the outside making. it wilder! They’re meant, somewhat( in my mind at least) to help smooth over our feelings…

    Thank you Adam. Wise words as always. I wonder if the only way really to understand what you are saying is to practise consistently for years and years and discover for ourselves what ‘pushing’ is and is not, and what works/what doesn’t work. I like the idea of a more gentle Ashtanga practice but on the other hand I sometimes need a bit of a push (eg a led class even if only online) to get me to practise at all… PS are we going to have a Keen on Yoga book anytime soon??!! The Ashtanga literature in terms of new releases has been a little light in recent years (at least in the UK) and maybe some of this stuff should be committed to writing rather than just TH-cam? Which is not to say the online stuff isn’t great; it is 😊

    • @keenonyoga
      @keenonyoga 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      hi! yes: The book has been on my mind for years. It may still happen… Perhaps, the forces are different; motivation and energy may be purer or less so in terms of the influences I spoke about here exerting untoward influence on the individual- I don’t count needing to be led through a class necessarily an example of pushing oneself. The devil is rather in the detail - what’s the attitude behind the exertion … thanks as always for watching and taking the time to comment.

I got up this morning and decided to really work on my forward bends , I beat myself up mentally first and saw an image of myself as being way not good enough and from a Catholic background I was in that position of suffering as you talked about. Deep down I know what my body is capable of but my mind just keeps up the pressure. Thank you I’m just going to go down and keep your podcast in mind as I do my practice 👍👍👍

    Great stuff, thank you Adam. I’m one of those people who’ve been practising pretty solidly for nearly 20 years but have never ‘progressed’ beyond primary series. To be honest I don’t find that demoralising or boring at all - it still challenges me and gives me so much. But after hearing this, I’m thinking I might dust off the old David Swenson manual and take a look at those intermediate poses (or at least the early ones). I’ve done a few in the past in classes but now practise 100% from home due to time constraints. Will be interesting to see if those additional backbends help with the wheel in primary! Although to be honest I get a lot of juice out of my updogs in primary so wheel feels good to me (mostly!) even without any intermediate. Thank you for all of these posts - they are such a wonderful resource.

      hi there, it’s been a pleasure being of use and providing points of interest. I would say though that the primary is lacking in terms of offering a full range of movements. I could relate to the point wherein I also did not feel like a part of the group in the Mysore circle that I was in when I unsubscribed from the guru. But as somebody who has learned to fly solo from a very early age, I didn't care much about being part of any yoga group or community. It's only recently that I woke up to the power of having like minded individuals around when I went through tough times of being injured in Mysore and for a change I didn't feel alone in a crisis-like situation. I also appreciate your online Mysore space which feels very free, there is no sense of competition and everybody is on their own journey which has given me more space to explore my inner world than any shala around. I also met few people there who warmed my heart with their free spirit, friendship and companionship on the journey that can be quite challenging at times. 🙏💛

      Hi Shishira, thanks for listening. I just think; why wouldn’t we be able to share freely with each other, without feeling judged or that we have to only follow a certain narrative to fit in? It’s unusual I. know to try to hold a supportive space that is free for individuals to experience themselves as opposed to tell them how to do it - but, surely. that is the whole point in yoga? I’m just surprised sometimes that more people don’t want to do this and allow themselves to be part of communities that control their experience of themselves and what they can or can’t do or think.

Operating from one's own center and autonomy comes with some heavy duty inner work and taking up self accountability that not everyone is ready for. Being uncomfortable and raw with your own self is not easy. However, if done , it brings so much inner transformation and wisdom that no guru can take away from the practitioner. ☀️

    Thank you Adam. I particularly liked your points about the current series/sequences being modern inventions and in a continuing state of flux/development. They seem fallible and imperfect like every other human invention. I think that’s a nice counterpoint to another human urge which is to seek to explain away things as god given and therefore perfect and immutable. The truth (as always with humans) is more messy - but no less interesting as a result. Thank you for these, Adam - your thoughts are much appreciated.

      thanks for listening. Yes, as I always say, just because tradition isn’t god given, it doesn’t need then to be negated - albeit something mutable always in evolution. in fact, that makes it more practically effective in as much as these are now tools in our own hands - as opposed to a magic spell conducted by our ‘priests’..

    Good afternoon Adam, thanks a lot for your talk. It's very interesting and encouraging. Yes, the rules are difficult to follow. I agree on what you say day practice. I always try to practice six or five days a week but many time I don't manage mainly because of lack of time (or maybe I find something else to do not to practice...). I think the rule is necessary because it gives me a benchmark. I've tend to the rule that's enough for me. Usually I practice 4 times a week but without the rule for daily practice I probably would practice even less than that. My teacher has a shala where he teach Mysore style 3 times. Some other times I practice by myself. Practicing in a yoga class is more motivating even if concentration is not always 100%. Same for vinyasa. When I practice the 2nd series expecially from ekapadashirsasana I feel I need longer pauses. But it depends on our features. For example I warm up easily (lot of fire) and sometimes I need to stop a little. Thank you again, always useful inspiring and bring me to a better analysis. Best Regards!

      thanks Marco for your generosity in sharing !Absolutely! we need both the ideal (expressed in the rule) but then also the knowledge that this is of course an ideal and not ‘the law’ - that realism always looks (and should look) different for an organic living body that is not a god like machine!

    Nice conversation, but it should be 3 hours long at least! So much wealth and depth of knowledge he possesses, I felt like I was watching an intro to a podcast!

    Great episode. Thanks Adam! As always, this is GoLD information . It is for me. Through all your podcast , GuESTS, testimonies, experiences, etc., I found myself bringing important considerations, books, and key elements that allowed me to have a better and healthier time while on the mat, and thanks to that, I always end up my practice more energized and happier. Short forms, variations in postures that work for me and the limitations of my body, blending options ( S1 or S2 ), bandhas , keeping the noble good flow, are very healthy advices for someone like me that wants to understand Yoga and still don´t DIMENSION what Yoga really is or really enclosed. These episodes will always keep me more interested in paying attention to the intelligence of my body and its limitations and work with that, and bring the benefits from THAT that I can do ( even if i´m not the most elastic and strong man ). Also , these podcasts have helped me to spot " mental desires " that in times are pushing you to that strict zone that you might wonder if they are stealing from you instead of giving you FOR THE NOW and for your older days.

      hi! thanks for getting in touch and letting me know your thoughts- one is never sure anyone is listening! Indeed, it’s a journey for us all, and, as it’s after all, an experiential one; induction from direct experience as opposed to deduction from reason , we need to share our ideas together and find context around our feelings on the way. Which is to say- this process is an open canvas as opposed to a closed book!

    There is a exact way to combine primary and second series...and it is not the way - part of primary and then pasasana....in my opinion...must now we're you are energetically in practice to switch the series or combine. .
