    "trying to keep my body healthy" followed by a shot of Mountain Dew and Doctor Pepper multipacks 🙂 I've been working from home for the past 16 years, my advice would be to switch to a low-carb breakfast and lunch if possible, but breakfast is the most important one. Switch to drinking just water throughout the day, but tea and freshly-brewed coffee is also good. As for stand-up desks, the best one I have ever used is also the cheapest: Ikea's manual-adjust model which is called Relatera in the US

    Godot is an excellent first game engine choice and GDScript is a lot like Python so easy for beginners to pick up. If you are coming from a C# background then Firebelly Games recently released a course on Udemy showing how to make a grid-based puzzle game in Godot using C#. It's a good starting point if you want to keep using C# (but GDScript is very easy to pick up).

    Hey as someone who never wrote a code in their life and decided to pick you unreal few months ago, it’s probably the best software out there. As a beginner it makes so much sense, it’s very well documented and blueprint get all the work done. Unlike unity, in unreal they usually have full fleshed out systems. They handle lot of things especially the tedious technical stuff and are always improving and optimizing their things. I hardly see them adding useless / unfinished features and as epic games is also a gaming company and use unreal for Fortnite, they make the engine account to that. Because unlike them unity is primarily a software development company so theres this unaligned things there. Over all unreal has a lot of systems built in for you to use. I saw many unity devlogs where they had to either buy plugins or make a system from scratch that unreal has inbuilt. And after seeing lot of gaming companies being built on it, as an solo dev it gives you a sense of security. As they can’t really fuck up because of all these big companies working with them.

    Nice video. And THANK YOU for putting project as the 1st tool. Just a couple of things to clear up: 1. The Unreal Engine is a Commercailly licensed engine where you would have to pay a fee (5% the last time I checked). A proprietary engine would be one created and used by a company and not typically available to anyone outside of the company. 2. The Unreal Engine uses a modified version of C++ for its own purposes. I'm told UEC++ and C++ are fairly different from one another. UE does not have a built in code editor that I'm aware of (and BluePrints is Visual Scripting). Unity 6.0 still has Ye Old Mono built in, but I'm told developers don't really like it. However, most of the smaller and/or open source & FOSS engines usually come with their own code editors. Godot, GameMaker, Defold... I've used personally and they all come with their own and work well in my opinion.

    • @Savallion
      @Savallion 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I feel like points 1 and 2 here support what I was saying, rather than "clear them up". With its own flavor of C++ it sounds like I'm getting some accurate vibes here in that it *feels* like proprietary software (not that it literally is). They don't still do a percentage-based fee, do they? I thought they stopped doing that years ago because it's ridiculous 😂

    An excellent round up. If I were to add a fifth category it would be music and sound FX. Similar to your art advice people can obviously use music / sfx libraries but if you are going to go for custom art to create a unique feel to your game it would make sense to get some sounds that support that mood or experience.

    Nice video. With respect to Godot and debugging (important as you say) - reportedly, in the upcoming Godot 4.4 debugging is becoming a lot better. You'll be able to run your game directly in the Godot-editor and click around to select objects and automatically be able to change their properties. on-the-fly so to speak. So good times ahead :-) Keep up the good work.

    Im just aspiring to be a gamedev And make a game that i would love to play, my neuroms in my brains are fried and cant feel dopamine in games so... I find obsidian is the best tool for taking notes, but right now im sticking to notepad, samsung notes and pen paper. As im just brainstorming my ideas. For free assets. I got the megascans for free as its free until the end of this year. I will go with epic for my dream game but for beginning godot and unity is my choice as it would be a 2d platformer or something. Programming language i would say i have none, although i have learnt c and c++. Learning python now, lets see. Visual studio is the one i would choose for now. Blender is go to for solodevs😅 Dont know about sound and lighting effects. I would probably hire a DJ and buy a sound pack for sound design. Lighting i will have learn by myself by im almost blind to good/bad lighting hahahah. I still cant detect the raytracing on and off. Thanks for your wonderful. insights.

    I would suggest Unreal to beginners if they got a decent computer, just use the templates that comes with the engine (like the third person or the first person template). Even kids can make games in Unreal after watching the right short tutorial videos. About 3d assets, you get so much stuff without spending any money. Unity looks also fine, but everything take much longer to make than in Unreal. One thing that I have notice is that the assets seems to cost a little bit more for it. I would suggest to make playlists that are only for game development like one with very important tutorials, one with not so important but useful tutorials and one with "inspirations" that could be videos of other games, music, art, movement (humans, animals or vehicles) ... etc. Also write everyting that is important down, make screeshots, save links in a text decuments.

    • @Savallion
      @Savallion 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For me the recommendation to learn to make assets (instead of buying them) is not really about the money, it's more about the cohesion of the art style and the ability to express creativity as a game artist. As I said, there's nothing inherently wrong with using only premade assets (people find success doing that all the time), but I think there's value in giving a part of yourself to the art as well as the mechanics of the game design.

      @@Savallion Agree, but the main problem doing everything self is the time that it takes. I just talk for myself, I'm sure that the chance that my games will fail is very high ... the main reasons could be my extremly weak main characters, they would be clumsy and not very smart. Also, most of my games would be action adventures in open worlds, but the players would have no inventory and would not see any UI (no lifebars and no maps). In my case it would be a waste of time to make hundereds of complex 3d models for my games, that at the end no one would play.

    I'm here to say that Unreal Engine using only blueprints is extremely powerful. You wouldn't want to make flappy bird in it, but it really excels at games that are character-centered. Even small indie games. I learned it as a beginner and I've used it for 6 years now and I don't plan on changing anytime soon. I now make a living from game development using Unreal Engine. : )

      Yeah, UE is definitely "heavy". If you aren't aiming to make something that's "graphically stunning" then there's no real reason to go there. Of course, there's no real reason NOT to either - every engine requires an investment in time to learn. Godot is totally viable and it's really growing a lot lately. Bevy looks very interesting. Torque2D and Torque3D have been around a while and are also pretty nice, though the maintainers have been known to leave the CMAKE setup stale.

    FWIW Unreal by default uses/integrates with Visual Studio for IDE purposes, including an extension thing you can install from VS itself (it also includes plugins for VS Code, XCode, Clang, and a few others). In my journey so far, I have come to like JetBrains Rider a lot for my IDE (I never clicked with Visual Studio personally), and Rider also has plugins/integrations itself for pretty much any/every engine. Good luck on all of our collective dev journies :)

    Excellent video! I did hurt my soul a bit when you said you'd been doing profession software for 12 years. It made me feel even older than I already felt... One important thing for to most games that you missed is audio. Whether it's music, sounds effect's or UX sounds. I'm struggling with it in my game. I've looked at about a dozen different audio programs but they're all a bit overwhelming. For now, I've done as those before me have and I am not working on audio until it can't be ignored anymore so I still have some time to procrastinate.

    Last thing I think make a cohesive game the feels nice create the ambience for any game is the sound. What products do you use for this? I would think garage band or something I am sure there are better ones for game dev though.

      Ah, I wanted to see how long it would be before someone mentioned sound. It is very important and I also have no experience with sound 😂 a gaping hole in my skillset. I experimented with LMMS (as a Windows user I do not have access to Garage Band, but I'm sure it's a fine option), but music production is a WHOLE THING. Definitely something that would be interesting to do more research on.

    if 2d is your thing, i would highly recommend asprite and tilemapper. i havent tried godot with C++, but if you using GDscript, the debugging tool do all the things you mention and more 10 out of 10 recommend on that one too. Unity is a good engine, the main problem is they might go bankrupt. this is not an issue with Unreal or Godot :)

    You forgot sound and music. For a beginner who needs a free tool, I recommend Beepbox. It's online so you don't have to install anything, and it saves all the data right in the URL of your song. It also lets you export and download your song or sound effect, and you can use Audacity to convert the file format to your preference.

    i forgot to add but apparently, game jams are the recommended way of gaining confidence? anyways, for anyone who does read this, if you want to get better at game dev without getting stuck in tutorials, you need to focus on thinking why something being done is being done when following tutorials. just wanted to add it since many people get stuck in tutorial hell and while i am not there anymore, i was stuck for quite some time too.

    About GDScript - try it! It's kinda like Python in terms of syntax (and in terms of performance if you don't use static typing so PLEASE don't forget to use it! xD). And don't overcomplicate it! For example define static type variables like this: var my_variable := 5 instead of: var my_variable: Int = 5 Godot's IDE is good enough for GDScript. VSCode is a good alternative of course. About Unreal Engine - you are 100% correct! It's mostly for AA/AAA game developers. For indie projects you would disable 90%+ of it's features anyways!

      Yeah I just switched to Godot and so far I'm enjoying GDScript. I like how everything is in one place too - IDEs can be pretty overwhelming places!

      Does static typing make that much of a difference, performance-wise, in GDScript? I haven't been using it because I'm lazy. lol.

    • @igorthelight
      @igorthelight 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AfterBurnett It really does! There are videos that show the difference but basically, the more computational heavy your code is - the more difference there will be! Just create new variables like that: var my_variable := 10 It's static now! P. S. Find in the Settings ability to autogenerate new functions with static types - it makes the job easier ;-)

      @@igorthelight Ah sweet, so just the colon? I don't need to explicitly state int/float/bool/whatever? That's cool. I'll get into that habit. Only just started my game so I can easily fix all my dynamic variables.

    • @igorthelight
      @igorthelight 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AfterBurnett Yep! It's like using "auto" in C++ or using "var" in C# ;-) For functions you should use ":" and also explicitly say what it will return. Here is the example: func _physics_process(delta: float) -> void: var my_variable := 10 var my_other_variable := "Hello"

    I am not really belong here but thought I could comment here. I personally not a game dev yet and not studied programming and have no coding experiences what I did by myself because I just following some tutorials here and there and I am now trying to learn Godot. I tried to make batch game, some one with game maker, I do like to mod and script existing games to make my mods for them (simple ones) but I am more or less a graphic oriented person not a coder. I have a very basic experience in these so not in the next few years going to make the new GTA but I do have plans for game ideas, maybe I can share few if anyone interested or just describe what I think and someone could consider how feasible to do it. So I am really in my early level to make something but hopefully later can do something. This video was useful in my opinion and I think I can utilize it later.

      A good way to get your head around coding is with visual scripting like Scratch or GameSalad or something. I started with GameSalad and when I finally learnt C/C++ it quickly clicked as I had been putting the same logic into place, only through graphical programming instead of typing text. It really then just becomes a matter of learning the syntax of the most important aspects of coding. You'd be surprised what you can do with a few loops and if/else statements!

      If your assets are low poly to begin with, I'm not sure that you need substance painter. You might try looking into some stylized techniques. Joyce (known as MinionsArt on the internet) has a wealth of really excellent tutorials around a method called "lazy UV unwrapping" that could be really useful to learn as an alternative to traditional texture painting.

    Great Video! I feel before you even worry about any thing though. Build a rough test version of your core gameplay mechanic in any engine. Until you get your hands on a playable version of your core mechanic, you have no idea if that mechanic will actually be fun. You might go through twenty versions of that mechanic till it feels right. You may even just scrap the entire idea, which I have done several times. Once you prove the mechanic is fun, then figure out your final design concept, engine, and art pipeline to produce the game. All the engine choices you mentioned are good. I am personally in UE5 right now, I like it's flexibility and wealth of documentation.
