Thunderbird Overnight Trip to San Clemente Island for Yellowtail, Bonito, and Bass
It had been nearly two years since my last overnight fishing trip, and my Dad and I were itching to get out. We booked a trip on the Thunderbird out of Davey's Locker Sportfishing, and headed over to San Clemente Island.
The weather had been rough leading up to this trip, and water temps were all over the place. After a tough crossing, we anchored in the lee side of the island and enjoyed great fishing for yellowtail, bonito, and calico bass. This was a trip I won't soon forget!

Day 2 of our trip, following pond fishing near Bishop. Lots of fish, and my first time cooking trout over a campfire. It has been way too many years since I explored the high sierras, but I'm itching to go back after this trip! All the fish were caught on #2 Izorline XXX, with a salmon egg on a #14 Gamakatsu single egg hook and split shot.

Barracuda are one of the most fun fish to catch off the southern California coast, but they often get a bad reputation as table fare. Barracuda are actually really good to eat, as long as they are iced right away and eaten fresh. 'Cuda make great fried fish tacos, but my favorite way to use the meat is by smoking it. Didn't know about this trail! Thanks, gonna bring up my wild motorcycle... LOL kidding -- it's a total putt-putt pig KLR
Glad you liked it! It’s a great little trail, I hope it didn’t get wiped out by the fires.
Do you have the address for this place wanna take my son fishing
If you post your email address, I will send it to you, then I will delete this comment. I’m trying to keep it on the down low.
Relatively new 4runner owner and my first pin-striping was tough on me. Been trying to stick to wider trails to avoid that issue, so I'm bummed this trail is tight. I'll get over it soon, I hope, but not just yet, Lol. Thank you for the good info, though
Understood, wait on this one.

Were there lots of people? I was going to go up yesterday too, it decided to go fishing (video coming).
@@rohrsoutdoors do you know if you can camp up there?
@@cruzinthruspace I don’t, I’ve been meaning to call forest rangers.
Awesome video, thanks for posting. What time of day did you go?
First light, over by 9:30 am
What are you doing differently to get hooked up so much more than everybody else
There are several things that help get bites when fly-lining live baits, especially if the fish are not biting full speed 1) Light line- #20 fluorocarbon is harder to see, #30 braid helps the bait swim easier. 2) Longer casts get the bait out to the fish that are holding away from the boat. 3) Picking a good bait that swims away quickly. If the bait doesn’t swim, it’s time for a new one. With the sardines, change baits frequently. 4) I like ringed hooks for live bait. It may not make a huge difference, but every little bit helps.
I'm going on the Thunderbirds September 10th I hope he spends time looking for bluefin and not just anchored up at San Clemente
@@victorcianflone5093 They always try to give their passengers the best chance at catching fish. Conditions were miserable that day anywhere besides the lee side.
@@victorcianflone5093 Personally, I’d much rather catch yellowtail, bass, and bonito all day long on an overnight trip.

The Thunderbird, I caught a 20lb yellowfin about 12 years ago on that very boat.😊

Stella and saltiga have much better drags. I have the saltiest mq in a 3000. On overnight boats, conventional setups work well. The rail is so high, you can rest the pole on it. Private boats, spinning is way more fun.
Agreed on many points. I didn’t intend for the Saltist to be a pelagic reel, I bought it for inshore fishing for bass and barracuda. That said, as you pointed out, spinning reels are stupid fun. I may need to get a better reel for the pelagics.
Looked fun! What size spinning reel were you using?

Excellent day of fishing!
You got that right! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video will make sure to follow for more great content. If you don’t mind sharing which bridge was that ? Doesn’t look like poleta or the 5 bridges.
I’m not sure of the name. It is below Bootleg campground. I haven’t fished in that area in over a dozen years, so I am not terribly familiar with it.
Nice, that’s a great trip when you catch some yellowtail 🙌🏾
You got that right!
I never understood why using spinners for flylining is so frowned upon in SoCal. You can clearly see just how easy it is for a sardine to run with almost no resistance compared to a conventional
I still prefer conventional for a lot of applications, they are more powerful and give you more of a direct feel when free spooling. That said, I just bought this set up and wanted to mess around with it. Throwing into the wind also favors spinning gear- it’s a trade off, but I had a blast.
All i use is spinners
@@myungkwak0311 fun for sure, and really useful in certain applications. It’s nice to have options.
Always expect the comments when I pull out the spinners. It changes peoples minds by the end of the trip
@@jaimeruiz4313 it’s a tool, and excels in certain applications. We had wind against current, and the ability to toss a sardine way out made a difference. I still love my bait casters, but am learning to like spinning too. Maybe I watch too many East Coast and Australia videos.
Spinning rod and reel specs please great video...
Daiwa Saltist 4000 Phoenix Bermuda 777 7’7” 15-30
@@rohrsoutdoors why did you choose spinning over a baitcaster I'm thinking of taking a small setup like that on the Thunderbird on next Tuesday
@@victorcianflone5093 two reasons: 1) It was wind against current, and spinning gear lets you cast without worrying about backlash. 2) I had just bought that rig and wanted to pull on some fish!
Great video! We are going to try fishing the horseshoe area pretty soon. If you could share details on the location of the shipwreck it would be greatly appreciated!

You bet! Can’t wait to get back up there, but rewatching this one is almost as good.
Bailey Canyon is one of my favorites when I just want to get away for the day, there is a couple of hidden little offshoots on the trail to park and relax in relative solitude if you know where to look. If you don't keep your head on a swivel you'll drive right past them. Right now I have a 96 ZJ and a 91 Sidekick, on that trail even in the Suzuki I'm guaranteed to get pinstriped.🤣 It was a cool little video and you got a nice rig to do it in. 👍
Agreed. That was my first time, I am definitely going back in the fall.

Do you have any suggestions for a mechanic? At 225K miles I am down for the whole rebuild or replace, there's no other rig I'd rather have so I wanna find a way.

Great video and you were slaying those trout. I’ve been wanting to do something like this with my girl and kids but honestly don’t know where to start 😅. Are the trout year around there? I’m guessing the water stays pretty cold.
You should! The season usually opens around April 20-25, and goes to sometime in the fall. I haven’t gone in 12 years or so, but we used to go every year sometime between April and July.
Some of the trout are there around, but the majority of what you catch are going to be stocked rainbow trout. Weather and water flow are the two big things to think about, if the water is flowing too fast, it is basically unfishable in the streams.
I know we are in the same basic area- if you are ever near Brea stop by Fisherman’s Access. Jack and the guys are great, and can help get you set up. It’s really straightforward, #2 line is the key.

How long did it take you do finish the trail?
It’s pretty short. I think you can do it in under two hours. It took a lot longer because we did a bunch of off shoots and stopped for lunch.
How do you fish the hookup bait? Do you just drop it and let it sit or jig it some sort of way ??
I am still trying to figure it out, but it seems like there are several ways for bass. It almost always seems to get bit on the sink or on a pause during a retrieve, I I mostly let it sink to a certain depth, wind 5-20 cranks, then let it back down.
Hookup Baits actually has their own TH-cam channel where they show how.
