What happens when life takes a different turn than expected? When your dreams die, and you have to start all over? How do you find a new identity in what seems like a whole new world?
I never thought I'd be a filmmaker. I never even knew I was creative. After chasing my Olympic dream for over a decade, I had to give it up and find a new purpose in life.
We all face these challenges at least once in our lives. And it's hard. But there's always another chapter waiting for us. Whether it's the second, the third, or the fourth.
This is my short documentary about how I found my second chapter, and how this changed my life. How I found purpose again.
Filmed with the Sony FX6 and FX3.

    What is the point of this video?? If you’re a film maker you have control over your lighting and if you don’t like the look of 12,800 ISO just don’t use it….I used FX6 at 12,800 in the far north during the summer, after midnight with great results. Sony doesn’t claim it’s the same, it’s literally in the product literature. Everybody knows the lowest ISO is always the best, don’t need to make a whole video about it.

    • @kriswarwick
      @kriswarwick 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching the video and visiting my channel! The point isn’t for me or you, who clearly know what you need to know about these cameras. The background for this video was that I am a part of a forum where someone asked if there were any comparison videos on the 12800 of these three cameras. I thought it made sense that he was curious about this, as I would have been curious myself if I didn’t own all three of them. Thus the comparison was the motivation for this video. And hopefully this answers some questions for those wondering. And yes, as a filmmaker I know all these things you just pointed out. And so do you, it seems! My approach on TH-cam is that not EVERYBODY does. I didn’t when I first started out, and I had to learn somewhere. For me, that was TH-cam. I love that I have the freedom of using 12800. It’s a great tool when you can’t control your surroundings. And I’ve been using it for more than three years. What I didn’t realize until I made this comparison was how much more grain you get at 12800. I am not saying it’s disappointing. It is 12800 after all. But I thought it was worth sharing these things for people who aren’t familiar with it. I know filmmakers who didn’t know that there was a difference. And honestly they are making a living as filmmakers. So I guess this video can be relevant to more than just beginners. I probably wouldn’t have needed to see this video if it was me, and I am sorry if it provoked you. But thanks for letting me explain why I made it. I hope it answered your questions!

    If the lenses are fixed, why not buy the sl2 or 3? Newbie here and interesting in photography.

    • @kriswarwick
      @kriswarwick 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A very good question indeed! For me I would say there are a few factors. 1. I bought the Q3 because I wanted to challenge myself more with just a fixed lense. Not being able to change lenses makes me think more, and forces me to be more creative with my angles. 2. The size. It’s a smaller body and the camera is super easy to travel with. The SL3 is so much bigger. 3. I have enough cameras. For me, who has a Sony a7rv + a lot of Sony lenses, I felt like I was good with the two Q models. I have been considering getting the SL3, but realized the Q’s together with the A7RV is a great kit. But I have considered it! 3. Price. The body of the SL3 is about the same price as one of the Q3’s if I’m not mistaken. And then the lenses might cost me just as much for one. So knowing that I am happy with the 28 and 44, it’s actually cheaper at the end of the day. 4. It’s better. I don’t know if this is true, and I’m not saying it’s better than the SL3, but since the whole camera is based on one fixed lens, you get a camera built for that exact lens. I honestly think this is an argument I am using to justify it more. But there’s something about having a fixed lens that I like. 5. The hype of it. The Q3 is so popular and such a big hype. A hype I love to be a part of. But I am sure this plays a role too. I tried to answer as honest as possible, and I hope it helped you understand. At the end of the day the SL3 is just a much bigger work horse, whilst these two are two smaller pieces of art. And I love them.

    So…. you have less than 2K subs on your channel, but are paying $1200 per year for basic, royalty-free music licensing? That doesn’t really add-up…. business-sense-wise, or strategy-wise….. especially when Artlist and Epidemic are far less expensive….. not to mention using loop/phrase services like Soundly….. or AI generated music from Udio / similar service…. Not trying to be critical…. just a bit confused 🤔

    • @kriswarwick
      @kriswarwick 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching. Could be that I don’t remember what I said in this video, but did I really say that I am paying $1200 for basic music licensing? Artlist and Epidemic might be less expensive, but they are also harder to deal with in terms of clearing videos after. I also don’t love the music options. Musicbed stands out in that way. And as a creative I want to have access to the best music. Filmmaking is also my living and with a creator subscription I’d pay $350 ish a year. This equals about 0,1% of my yearly revenue. I’ve made about $1500 dollars on TH-cam the last two months, and with a Musicbed creator subscription I’d pay $60 dollars for two months. So I honestly don’t think it’s a bad strategy. But this is also based on the fact that when I make videos for my own happiness, I want to have the best results. And for me that also includes music. I’m not paying $1200 for my music, but I probably would have been willing to do so. Regardless of the size of this channel today, I see everything I make here as an investment. Your questions are legit tho! I understand where you’re coming from. But having used all these services, I am not in doubt when it comes to the quality.

Yeah, at the StadtMuseum in Copenhagen some years back, they had an Etching Show of Rembrandt's originals: He had self portraits of his hair in a mess, combed, his nose smashed, etc. Very funny to observe. I started laughing out loud--others got nervous. When I explained, this is exactly what we do in photography & film school, they all began to relax and started laughing with me. The Q343 you purchase the lens and get the body kinda almost for free. The APO lens series of Leica is the top of the line. Maxed in the SL system. Fun fact: Even though Adobe and Leica are going hand in hand, there is no correction profile for the APO Summicron SL lenses, simply because it’s not necessary, that lenses are optical perfection. The Q3 Summilux 1.7 is of course also perfect and super sharp. You can easily drag the sharpness slider of LrC from the default value of 40 downto 10 and sometimes even to zero (e.g. photographing people). That missing charger: I fully agree. The central shutter could be 1/4000 instead of only 1/2000.

      I thought so too. According to some people in the comments it’s because of a new law, but it still seems weird to me as you have to pay a lot to get a charger if you need one. I’m in NYC taking photos now and if I had to plug a chord into my camera whenever I needed to charge the battery, I would be without a camera for a few hours. With the charger I can switch batteries and let it charge while I’m out shooting photos

    2:31 -> Being a noob, I was wondering if there was an other way to have a bigger focus area, other than to increase the aperture? Coming from an iPhone where the focus area is pretty big at low aperture (I think the 15 pro has f/1.78 fixed on the main lens if I'm not mistaken), when trying to reproduce the iPhone shot with everything in focus on a regular camera I have to bump the aperture almost up to 22 I guess (I usually try 16+)? But then no light, and yeah I need to go to 12800 ISO even in broad daylight sometimes. There surely must be another way to do this that I am not yet aware of. Byt the way, which aperture would you recommend when you want to get a shot with both foreground and background in focus (provided the foreground is not too close) ? By the way, thanks for the video 👍 When going for those 12800 16+ aperture shots I also noticed a drop in quality but I wasn't so sure because I also believed that being a dual base ISO camera, 640 and 12800 were supposed to give a similar result (ZV-E1), but your video confirms that it isn't

      Thanks for watching! I honestly haven't looked that much at the specs of the iPhone, but the iPhone having 1.78 doesn't mean it uses that aperture for the pictures you're taking. In terms of focus area, aperture is the only thing playing a role in this from a technical perspective. That being said, the wider the lens and the further away you are from your subject, the bigger focus area you'll get. Does that make sense? Keep in mind that "everything in focus" usually means less debt, and that's what sets a professional camera a part from a phone (at least it used to, until the phones got better on this too). And regarding the question about what aperture I'd go for, I think it depends a lot on the lens. I hope this answered some of your questions.

      That's not what the cinematographer of the new Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, said. He used the Venics 2 which also shoots very clean at 12,800. He used this high iso to stop down and get deep focus for many scenes and used negative fill to control lighting.

    Been saying this since its release, it feels like a pointless move. The 28mm is perfect for street photography. Now if they release a 35mm Q4 with fully articulated screen and improved autofocus - let’s talk, but no way I’m chopping in my 28 for a 43.

    This red dot don't attire only the eyes of photographers. for travelling I prefer my little Fuji. I always been a skeptical of Leica. But the history of the brand is really interesting, I understand your feeling. The best camera for each photographer is different and it does not imply to have all the best spec. For example my brother who is a Sony fanboy, don't understand why I love to shoot with my Fuji, but I completely understand why he love the alpha 7, he find it more interesting to edit his raw, and I prefer to show and play with the film simulations. I just prefer the colorymetry and tactil feel I have with my gear, he love the autofocus, spec and technology of the Sony with a quality for his raw incrediable to play with it.

      This is so interesting! And I am curious. Why are you skeptical of Leica? I understand your view on the Fuiji. It gives such great colors and the feel is amazing. With Sony I am getting more and more disappointed with the colors. Although it is my work horse and I am filming with Sony, I believe there is a bigger issue with the colors they provide me with.

    Does anyone find it amusing that what everyone using digital cinema cameras says they are going for are "filmic" and cinematic images, yet few people today have experience shooting motion picture film stock. Film is grainy, even low ASA film has grain. Even fine grained 35mm stock has noticeable grain, it's what makes film look like film. I wish everyone shooting today had a chance to actually shoot and telecine some film, it would completely change your outlook on what you do, what you worry about, what you obsess about. Today's digital shooters are absolutely fixated on shooting the cleanest, most sterile looking footage humanly possible, which is the opposite of "filmic" and cinematic, at least if you are comparing your images to classic or even recent films shot on film. We would all be well served to lose the mania for squeaky clean, sterile looking images, a little noise, grain has very little bearing on what your audience perceives, especially when viewed on the average viewers 4" phone screen. ISO 12,800 on a Sony FX3 or 6 is LEAGUES cleaner than ASA 50 S16 stock ever was. I've always been a fan of digital cameras that have grainy looking noise that looks like film grain over cameras where ths noise looks like video pattern noise superimposed over a video raster. Canon, Blackmagic and Fuji, in particular, seem to excel at this more filmic noise while Sony's noise doesn't look as filmic to my eye. It wasn't that many years ago when the average digital cinema camera had what today's shooters would absolutely have a melt down over. The Canon 5D MKII. The Panasonic HVX200 and the DVX100, even the early RED cameras were noisy as hell, yet somehow people used these tools to shoot some amazing storytelling. My tip is, if you want to shoot footage that is filmic and cinematic, shoot it to look like film, don't sweat the grain unless it's distractedly prevalent in the image. Nobody but other video nerds care if your image is noisy/grainy, all they care about is does your lighting kick ass, is the sound good and is the director able to tell a great story. All of the rest is basically video and film people's OCD and supporting OCD is a dangerous thing. How many of your clients have EVER complained about video noise or grain in footage you've shot for them?

    • @kriswarwick
      @kriswarwick หลายเดือนก่อน

      I love this comment and this is something I’ve tried to bring up with other filmmakers from time to time. It’s ironic that we pay thousands (or ten thousands) of dollars to get cameras with a technology that gives us a grain free look, just to simulate the film look in post. I totally agree with you, and personally I don’t see an issue with the grain you get from a camera that can’t give you that clean look (or the 12800 as shown in this video). TH-cam wants to see it, because a lot of modern filmmakers are all about this. I often contemplate trying to go super old school and shoot film, just because of the things you mentioned in your comment. I think our time’s filmmakers (if we can call ourselves filmmakers…) make it harder for others by shooting such crispy images, and therefore clients might actually find it to be too grainy at some point. I wish it wasn’t that way. Thanks for your contribution here. I hope everyone reads this.

    In my opinion, the spot provides info about the shape of the lightsource and the direction the light is coming from! However, I would not use it to measure exposure or the amount of light hitting the subject.

    • @kriswarwick
      @kriswarwick หลายเดือนก่อน

      The white reflection in our eyes is showing that what we are filming is alive. I would say the lack of this white spot in the eyes is a sign of bad exposure. Unless you’re intending on not having it for some reason. Which you never would in interviews. However, you could get this and still overexpose the shot and therefore making it look bad. But if the angle of the light, and the amount of light is poorly placed/lit you will not get this spot. When I don’t see this spot in the eyes I feel like there’s no “life” to the person.
