Fast 1000 rpm or slow it down to 200 rpm. The belts can lay flat or quickly swing to vertical, forward or back. This one will show you how fast you can fix and sharpen a damaged knife. At farmers many knives aren't in the best condition and your customers don't want to wait for them so speed makes you figure out how to keep the quality and still stay fast.

Nylon gears, what could possibly go wrong?
@@leonardbertaux6897 I sharpened 15,000 knives and nothing happened. I even looked at the gears and just a minor seating on the nylon. That said I tried a platter wet stone sharpener with two metal gears and the growling was loud. P.s. replacement nylon gear was under $10.

Do you have an example of pricing for sharpening. I’d like to do this out where I live( not in CA by the way)
@@davidnevins4883 Google prices on sharpener’s website. Example on a bad day I might sharpen 40 knives. Good day 200
Let me ask you another question, sir as I mentioned, I have the same machine, but the latest one, can I put a water trough underneath that belt and run that belt damp instead of using the bottle? I really dislike using the bottle. Are those belts more water resistant and what belts and what grits and where do you buy them? Please, Peter when you have the time my hope is you answer some of these questions cause I’m still trying to learn this machine. Unfortunately there’s not a lot of videos out there with others utilizing this machine.
@@Phil.D333 I buy my belts from true grit in Ontario California. Some belts are waterproof or water resistant. You can’t use a water trough unless the wheels turning 100rpm. Any faster requires a rain coat. I’m using 100grit orange blaze on one side and a 1000 grit resin wheel on the other. I’m putting a water soaked microfiber cloth under the resin wheel. But if you put a cloth under the 100 grit it will throw it out
@ I have also tried raising up the Apex unit about 4 inches taking out the steel plate on the bottom that slides left or right, then use Tormek’s deeper troughs. I’ve been using thicker car washing sponges within the Tormek troughs. Although the stock Apex seem to be OK at Tormek troughs retrofitively if you’re well seem to hold water better at higher your speeds
@@Phil.D333 I think the wording is not clear enough to understand what you’re saying. Perhaps you are using a translation? When I used Tormek and when I found running them at 120 rpm was as fast as I could go without having water problems. I’m running my AC BELT OVER WHEEL at 3800rpm
@ what grits do you buy from them?
@@Phil.D333 100 grit. But 120 leaves a nicer finish. But 100 lasts longer. 80 lasts the longest but I don’t like the rough finish. One piece of advice- expect to change your mind on your process. I do. So what I do/use isn’t the best it’s what I’m prefer today.
Question, sir, why don’t you just leave the trough under the 100 grit as well instead of having a spray it all the time? I leave mine on both wheels, I set the plate that holds these troughs half-and-half. You know that aluminum plate underneath the unit that slides left and right. Have you ever sharpened knives Edge Leading on these wheels? I have on mine but it seems that I really don’t need to my fear is wearing down the grit on the 100, and the 1000 when doing Edge Leading or at least I think it does wear out the grid a little more. But Jeff, the owner said it doesn’t. It’s the same as doing Edge Trailing. Another important question, sir if you will, please, have you ever used Cutter Master’s jig to drill holes in Tormek wheels, or any other CBN 10 inch wheels and ran it on the Apex? I ask this because I’ve got, or purchased many other wheels other than Tormek when I was using them on my T8s.
The 100 grit wheel is rough enough to grind down a sponge or a microfiber cloth. If you can put up with it wearing the sponge you still have to deal with it being thrown at you. And its dirty, wet and generally hits you in the nuts. that process leaves a stain. I was wearing jeans that closely matched the resin wheel color. P.S. Belts are even toother than the resin wheels so they even throw stuff better. Fine resin and belts don't have this problem.
I’m a little bit confused. Are these wheels the same as they put out today in 2024 from Cutter Master’s, 100 grit and 1000 grit? Or is this the same wheel but back then they didn’t have the three holes and the pin as they do today? Thank you so much. I’ll get back to continuing with this video.
WEN tools look good, but just don't last long. Worse part is the pump always goes bad, and replacement parts are not available.
@@l82nite sorry but you are mistaken. I ran two when wet grinders and sharpened about 15,000 knives. Only had one problem with the axle. It was my fault it bent. The replacement axle cost $7. And kept in mind that the wen costs 1/2 what a replacement wheel from Tormek costs.
Hi. Thank you so much for your help, channel!!!!!!!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
If you need to profile chisels, wen is going to take an eternity, I return it and profiled my chisels with a diamond stone

Standin on bidness
i started a sharpening business this year, started with shear/ salon and Clipper blades. then people wanted knives etc. got an mdf wheel system, tormek knockoff. been doing pretty good, busy more and more. just upgraded to a 1x30, works much better for consistent angles and sharpness.
Once you go Bigger than 1X30 with out guides you will be very productive. Always check your work. Almost every new sharpener thinks they are consistand and dont need to test knives. Thats when you start getting in bad habits.good luck!
I have the Wen. I use a cheap whetstone from Harbor Freight as a grading tool. I'm not a professional, just like sharp knives, but the Wen is great, and $4 vs. $35 for a grading stone? Seems good to me.
Yeah I would use the jig for chisels too, or if you do something like drawknives you will get a much better result. One question Pete, I had such a hard time getting the alignment right from one wheel to the other - which left me confused, I have done the zeroing and everything on the support bar, so it should be right if you know what I mean. Maybe its just because the jig is so precise, even minor differences like 0,5 mm will be a big deal. So yea since I do chisels so rarely for customers, I just sharpen them the same way I would in my workshop, rough it on 100grit Resin wheel like you do, and continue 400 grit -> 1000 grit on flat hand benchstones, when you have the concavity its much easier to hit that angle by free-hand, but it will leave a 100grit scrach pattern in the middle of the divot. Still sharp result.
@@Musicpins if you zero out the tool rest the wheel size is the only variable. My wheels had a slight size difference due to having one of the first 100 grit wheels with the thicker resin. Only one of my wheels is this thicker size. It’s measured 1/16” thicker resin. It was a test wheel.
If you set up a sleuth with a paint roller in it so it spins, it would transfer water to the wheel.
@@sween187 interesting. Perhaps a foam weenie size.
@@sween187 Good idea. Maybe a slow drip on the roller as well.
I'm glad to see you back, Pete! Thanks for taking us through your process for chisels. That's an amazing grinder!
i started my side business with a mdf wheel on a buffing grinder this year! got really good at freehand sharpening. but got tired of grit flying off, do made my own plywood wheels with glued on 240 grit sandpaper- lasts over 50+ knives no problem now.. but that's going back to putting buffing wheels on, found out 1x30 belt sander works way better, you ever try one?
hey! just found you again, 1st- does the soft deburring wheel not round it at all? or is it soft enough to only take off the burr? sorry, long story here if you're interested in a read.... started a sharpening business in Canada, mdf wheels, hand guided only, king 10" wet- now 1200 cbn, getting a better microscope like yours $30 one doesn't cut it anymore, got the laser already. just got a bucktool low rpm 1x30. have you tried a 1x30 or 1x42 belt sander? it is awesome! modified an angle guide, finish on 5000-7000 grit aluminum oxide belt, edge leading, hone on leather belt ( hard surface side) with green compound (making my own .1 micron diamond soon) no micro/ foil burrs from looks of$30 scope. does curvy push cut through ad paper 😊😊
@@rowpaul4545 thanks. I’d love another belt option but swapping takes too much time for my fast pace work load. I’ve just shot a microscope video. It might be out in a week or two.
@@rowpaul4545 the deburring wheel I have and green compound is said not to round over according to true experts. Oddly I can feel a difference when heavy passes are needed but Bess testing numbers do not show this rounding. The wheel and compound is from Perfect Edge but they sell to tower owners and close friends.
Good to see another video, Pete. Nice wheels.
Nice
I have a Wen, noticed you put a Tormek stone. I wasn’t sure if it fits properly? It does, right?
yes it does
@ thanks
Brought a cheap knock off of the Tormak u fortunately shaft bearing was plastic and didn’t last long
Great video Pete, especially for those starting out! Can you share a link to the microscope?
I've got one in 200 grit as well on my T-4. I use a computer program to set my angle. I like mine enough to consider getting another grit and get me smoother before proceeding to the Japanese water stone as a final finish. I'm a hobby knife maker and use this to establish an initial edge after I grind the bevel. I run my CBN wet and put it in my tempering oven at 250 degrees when I'm done.
Great video Pete, did you share a link to the laser? I love the idea, I've been thinking of something similar, & I'd like to try it.
Can't get a link to work. Search red line laser / focusing with stand. I toss the stand and make one that mounts it overhead.
Perfect now I know one side only just touch up on back !
What is the price of the machine?
A scotch-Brite wheel or belt on one of your side machines quickly also takes the birr off I find. I have the scotch brite wheel on a variable speed jet machine on the left side and on the right side I have a leather flappy wheel with blue compound wheel on the right side of the same machine. The leather wheel is one of those that are glued together, sort of at the core, but as it flares out to the edge of the wheel, it’s a little bit more separated. I think I got that at Curry’s custom cutlery. this way, we can just zip along quickly as well
No need to answer. I found my answer as I backed up. Thank you Peter.
I may have missed something in the video with my question because in the beginning, you had the 100 grit on the left side. But when you did those small garden snips, that’s why I’m asking about why you had the rubber wheel instead of the hundred grit.
On the left side of the unit with the rubber wheel, why don’t you just leave the 100 grit resin bond wheel there? Just asking.
Why not turn the machine around and reverse the rotation on the strop wheel to avoid the handle interfering with the grinding stone?
Sometimes the obvious gets missed. You are possibly the 50th to point that out!
Hello Pete, I’m interested in purchasing the Tradesman but I would like for you to help me set it up like yours.

Thanks for the video Peter. I like this machine. Question I like a machine that also has other options such as me running two of my Tormek diamond wheels, or other CDN attached to this particular machine. -Have you tried this with various other CBN wheels? -Have you tried it with Tormeks diamond wheels? * I understand you need a particular type of pin to attach to this unit when I want to run Tormek wheels. Is that correct?
This machine ,the AC edge can take all these wheels you mentioned. You will just have to drill a Pin hole that lets you use the reverse without spinning the wheels loose. Cuttermaster has a jig/guide to drill this hole next to the 1/2" center hole. Ive had to drill this hole on a couple wheels I had and its no big deal at all.
Nope not for the price I seen online. But hey great for you.
If nothing else I love the box of bandaid in the background. Like some sort of Easter egg.
Actually, I’m sorry, buddy. It’s not these machines I’m questioning. It’s the tradesmen Bell over wheel and your other video.
Again, don’t get me wrong. I love belt over wheel convenience of application. I’m debating these machines. I too for knife sharpening. I love the torque. My wheels totally slow down if I’m adding two cbns on my Tormek T8. It’s unbelievable. It totally slows down to a stop. Maybe I should check my shaft my washers on my T8. Make sure everything is in place but it’s happened many times.
