    I had a friend in high school who was initially misdiagnosed as ADHD in middle school, but later correctly diagnosed as Bipolar. And apparently that's a somewhat common experience. And just listening to your struggles and the coping mechanisms that help, really helped me see how that can happen. I have ADHD and I can relate to a lot of what you said. Especially the being seen as a "problem child" or struggling with routines while desperately needing routines. IDK that knitting has helped my anxiety (my triggers are more social and "my body doing weird things" focused), but it's versatility has helped because it can both be the busy work I do with my hands to help focus on other tasks, or the thing I'm hyperfocused on, depending on the project and situation.

    • @toksknits
      @toksknits 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Amanda.aka.Megan.Shines people getting misdiagnosed is so so common. That’s why I think it’s always good to also do our own research even while seeking help from a professional. It’s interesting that your knitting hasn’t helped much with anxiety. I think I realized that I need to have a variety of projects going with different levels of difficulty to maintain that balance. So I’ll usually have some plain stockinette, color work and cable projects going at the same time. That way I don’t feel too ‘stressed’ about a particular project or construction.

    • @Amanda.aka.Megan.Shines

      @@toksknits I started anxiety meds about a year before I started knitting, which helped with the low grade dread I felt from my anxiety. So now, the break through anxiety I feel is mostly situational based, like having to make a call or having a new migraine symptom and convincing myself it's something serious. So in those situations I either can't knit or I am so distracted by being anxious that I can't make myself knit.

When I had my mental collapse, I returned to knitting, one of the oldest crafts I knew how to do. It became a life-line back to my new normal. BTW, I am Bipolar II with Depression. I was diagnosed at 55½ yrs when I could no longer cope with a disease I was born with. I do not want anyone's pity, just an acceptance that it is part of who I am. Speak the truth boldly.

    I love knit and chat videos. Thank you for such an interesting and thoughtful one. I had to laugh when you stopped and realized you weren't knitting and said, "How do people do this?" I feel this is a real case-in-point how knitting can help! It allows us to just stop and focus which, with over-active and over-thinking minds, many of us have with mental illness. Knitting helps the mind switch off, to the exclusion of everything else, as you say, like meditation. What I also love about knitting, which I think you might have touched on, is that it provides a sense of certainty when all else feels uncertain. A (yo, k2tog) always makes a lace stitch, no matter what else in happening in my life! Thanks for your time, and thanks for adjusting the ads 🙂

    I also have Bipolar Disorder (type 1)! It's funny because, like you said, whenever I'm manic I would always want to start new hobbies and knitting is the only one of those that I've actually stuck with long term. I think it definitely helps with my anxiety. Also it's really nice to have something to concentrate on and do with your hands instead of just sitting and ruminating all the time.

    This is such an inspirational vlog. I picked up knitting out of curiosity. But then I realized how it relaxed my mind. My body is so tense because I am always managing pain from lupus, Sjögren’s and peripheral neuropathy. Sometimes I am so mentally exhausted trying to take care of myself. Knitting makes me feel happy and challenged artistically. I knit something every day. It makes me feel normal. I feel so different from everyone I know. Picking up my needles just gives me peace even when what I am working on is hard and challenging. 🧶

    Thank you for sharing! I have depression and anxiety, I started medication for depression last year and it is definitely helping. I had already been dealing with depression for at least the last 10 years without medication or really seeking help because I felt like I didn't need it/I didn't want to feel judged by my family for seeking help. But it was so hard everyday trying to deal with life stuff plus depression. I was over it and finally talking to my PCP. They do depression screenings all the time, and I would usually just lie and say everything was fine, but that day I just answered truthfully. Knitting and crocheting help me as well. Knitting I learned last year (thanks TH-cam), and I learned how to crochet in high school. Crafting is such a great outlet. I'm always advocating for my friends and family to find some type of crafty hobby, but they never listen lol. Sometimes I feel like I can't do anything, but I know I can knit some socks or crochet a blanket or stuffed animal :) . And the repetitive motions and movements are soothing. Knitting has brought a great deal of joy in my life, and has been the source of a lot of inspiration. Like looking at all the projects and different yarns sparks so much happiness. I've also found a great knitting community locally and that's been a great plus, it's just nice to have people around who are just as excited about yarn and patterns as you.
