👀
It's my first isekai anime 😭 In our local tv show the opening is in Japanese 😢
I vaguely remembered Monster Rancher, but didn't remember much about it.
I heard of the games; I might have seen the anime no idea. o.o
That's quite rare!
The first isekai anime I saw was Fushigi Yuugi. The anime had 2 female protagonists.
Monster Rancher was fairly easy to get. Taro Alien (Uchuujin Tanaka Tarou) Well, so far I have only found a Japanese and a Taiwanese dub and the better one was almost 360p. And then I found out that "Thai" and "Taiwanese Mandarin" are very different languages. So even though I know someone who could translate Thai for me, this is not gonna be easy.
I played one PS1 game of this show. I remember I was deeply saddened that my monster freaking died just when it was starting to get strong enough for higher championship leagues. I remember reloading the save, but my monster just kept dying of old age.
That's just too much trauma for a kids game
I WAS TRANSPORTED TO A FAR AWAY LAND- I rewatched this series in Japanese and this bought back memories! Owned the GBA game and the PS2 games. I think there was a re-release of the games for phones.
Oh I only watched the dub haha. And yeah I heard there was a rerelease on mobile but I guess it never got beyond. Asian borders?
I think the main issue was just that the show wasn't particularly interesting It had cool moments but I remember liking the evil monsters more than the main cast Suezo was kinda fun sure but the others were rabbit, wolf, golem and pink thing Meanwhile the bad guys had succubus lady (my young mind wasn't ready), ice golem, evil wolf, (at least those two had better designs) sun mask wizard (my favourite as a kid) and Muu who was way cooler than most others Besides that I remember the show kinda disappearing after season one ended and then me catching an episode of the second season and then nothing else With how hard competition was, between Pokemon which was way more popular, Digimon having a way better show, Duel Masters (the OG Abridged series) and Medabots having cooler designs and premise MR just kinda existed
Monster Rancher's series finally was pretty Lame, rather than epic. Disappointment in that lame series ending may have something to do with being 'forgotten'.
Jea Monster Rancher was a good Anime back than. And after it ended ... there was just nothing! No Games, no Extended Story/Spin Off. (In germany) It just ended.
There was a movie spin off but only hardcore fans checked it out :/
@@waggishwonderland Ohh thats interesting ^^
great video, it's true just because an anime/ game is popular doesn't always mean its good, sometimes there are gems right under your sniffer. I remember monster rancher, I think you were right with all the reasons it didn't succeed, the mascot designs were ugly.
Thank you for the kind comments. Yeah suezo but they really needed to rethink their mascot choice
5:09 funny that you mention all of this because I have a very similar experience This show was dubbed in greek and broadcasted on the weekend at very early morning. Like 6 or 7 early. The only chance you would watch it was if you were a very early bird. I was 11 at the time and caught it by chance one time. I remember going to bed early just to wake up and watch it, missed tons of episodes and forgot about the story, watched the season 1 finale by complete accident and barely understanding anything...And to top it all off, years later, I realized I never bothered to look up what the show's title even was (lol). Mind you, back then we would be lucky if we had an hour of dial up per week, so the only way to learn the show names was navigating through chaotic teletext on the TV set. Almost a decade later I heard the japanese opening theme by accident(the one used in the greek dub) while browing through youtube, and remember myself bawling my eyes out for hours. All the childhood memories came back, and I finally learned the name of this show. To my surprise though, nobody of my peers remembered it. I think only my brother and one of my colleagues had a vague memory of it. But nobody else. It is a shame after having watched the show fully again, skipping over the opening each time (it still gets me very emotional). To make matters worse, despite being broadcasted in a time where VHS recording was fully available, the fact that it was broadcasted so early and never really got a crowd pretty much doomed the greek dub. To this day it is lost media, I have never found anything no matter where I search.
That's a really sweet story 😊. Well if you don't mind it in English there are full eps on TH-cam. But yeah i do find it weird how it just evaporated from memory. It wasn't a bad cartoon at all and so the fact that people completely blank out when asked about it is so strange to me
Hey, here in Italy it was relatively known, I think it had to do with the opening: it was very similar to American Pie but sped up, quite memorable, I guess that helped a lot. It was also aired at normal times together with Digimon and other anime, I even played the ps1 games so I mean it's not well-known but not unknown either here.
Hahaha another commentator told me to check out the Italian opening. It was very euro 00s pop which was cool
I had the game on my Playstation, it was okay. I liked using Tenchu Stealth Assassins to generate this Ninja Monster. I liked what of the Anime I got to see too. Moochi was awesome. I miss him.
I just kept getting pixies
😅😅
Monster Rancher was soooo much better than Pokemon. I honestly can't believe Pokemon is still around. Granted the GameBoy games are hands down the most addictive games ever made, but still...
Ooof that's a strong strong claim chef
My cousin had a music cd from his mom that the monster it generated was muu...... I dont remember if it was a pure muu but that was just crazy.
i remember monster rancher
I mostly remember the show for the female villain Pixie, as a youth and how she had a really nice design.
THATS whEre I KNoW that EyE BALL fROM!!!!!!!!! I knew i wasnt that crazy!
I'm glad it's returned into your life xD
Oh God what a throwback I watched Monster Rancher too I think I watched it on the same saturday morning show too Live & Kicking too it was a really good old school anime
Eyyy another UK anime fan 🪭
ironically I remember the animae fondly, but half forgot about it as it's almost entirely wiped from the internet for some reason. My brother and I BOTH ... obtained ... (ahoy-matey)... "copies"... of it via... (avast!)... "methods".... but they are of poor quality. So yeah, watched this video because that's what I've been wondering myself, why did this animae kind of vanish from the internet. And your theories make as much sense as anything. That said, maybe because this show showed up in my region when I was in late high school, I didn't mind Swazo as the mascot. Muchi was a harder pull for me as mascot though.
RE: Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher. WOW! DIdn't know that was a thing, I'l look that up. I bought the 1 and 2 remixes on steam, so if they release this game on Steam it's a fairly instant buy for me, even just for collectors value (yeah, I don't Steam is now requried to say you don't own anything, but I might make an exception as I want to support this series). EDIT: Switch only :( So, I guess I'm out of luck as I'm only purchasing physical switch cartridges these days since I'm frustrated at Nintendo over quite a few things, and I dont' see a physical cartridge for this one ( :( ).
Hmmm can you not get it physical through import?
@@waggishwonderland I haven't looked into this option yet, but it might be something for me to look for. I think someone DID create a DVD set at some point so if I can find it affordably it might be worth a purchase once I dig myself out from my Christmas purchases (I overdid the Christmas stuff this year so I'm a little low, and this is on top of some expensive medical proceedures I've been subjected to for the past 4 months or so)
I-remember-the-series-finally-it-uncut-last-year and-i-have-notice-that-the-first-opening-theme-song-is-more-laid-back in-the-Japanese-version,
The anime actually ended. It turned out Genki's monster friends combined to form the Phoenix, the only monster that could take down Muu. When they fought, Muu and Phoenix killed each other and Genki was immediately transported back to Earth. A pretty somber ending, especially since the shows constantly shifting time slots
I think one of the biggest shortcomings of Monster Rancher was strictly that it was focused more on a JRPG styling that was intended to appeal more to the Final Fantasy or SaGa crowd than it was the actual creature capture fanbase. The rough and darker styling was cool, but definitely not something kids of the time would've liked. I say this as a longtime Pokemon fanatic, who actually did enjoy the Monster Rancher anime because it gelled more with my side interest in Final Fantasy than Pokemon.
I definitely remember monster rancher, certainly moreso than mon colle knights, medabots, or flint time detective, which I for some reason, associate with it.
I think cos they all came after Digimon and Pokémon and ppl saw them as the next wave or anime trying to jump on the western train
used to watch this on upn and then one day it just stopped airing. never did watch the last episodes. thanks for reminding me of this.
I saw Monster Rancher when it first aired in Germany, during the late 90s or early 2000s. I'm not sure about the JP release, but when I saw it it came a good few years _after_ Pokemon, Digimon, and YuGiOh already saturated the market for card games. In particular, the massive popularity and cultural impact of Pokemon made Monster Rancher feel like a knock-off product, even if it wasn't. It came too late to leave a lasting impact, at least in the West. Mind you, I somewhat enjoyed the series when I was young, but it was inferior in most regards to early Pokemon and Digimon. It looked... _a bit cheap_ and didn't have the style or substance to get away with it. It had some heartwarming moments, a good few laughs, and some of the characters were competently written, but that's about all the praise I have to offer. Meanwhile, I could talk at length about early Pokemon, Digimon, or YuGiOh, even though I haven't seen them in over a quarter of a century. It wasn't a bad anime, but it was in direct competition with some of the best kids shows ever produced, in history. It was an amateur going into the ring with absolute legends - it never really stood a chance.
Hahah you actually gave a better summary than I did 😜
@@waggishwonderland You flatter me, good sir.
it's crazy how it was running on Fox kids in my country, for a long time, I really like it, but never got to see it from start to end because they kept rebooting it. To this day I don't know how it ends
TH-cam is now your friend with the full eps!
I love hat when you spoke about Isekai you brought up the Vending machine when, when that anime has actually unironically ended up one of the better Isekai we have had in years. Everyone says how its so much better than it has any right to be. (You're correct tho that its over saturated XP)
Ooooh. I've heard some mixed opinions on Reddit and other anime places. I think I was in Japan when I first heard of the plot I was like ' yeah, no, anime needs to snap out of this isekai stuff they are running out of ideas!: xD
About 10 years ago I misremembered the title as "Monster Ranger" when I came across the video game and was so disappointed with the whole ranch setting. (The anime had no ranching what so ever and my English wasn't too great back in the '00s, so that's my excuse.) I really enjoyed the darker themes and (relatively) complex characters in the series. Also the German OP had a great song despite the lyrics barely relating to the show and having a weirdly conservative message (making things the way they used to be).
Right? Why is the show even called rancher then. There was so much confusion x'D
You should listen to the Italian opening of Monster Rancher: it rocks!
I looked it up. Wow it has a such a euro 00s pop sound 😆
I remember this anime. I liked it very much when it started but gradually lost interest in it as the show progresses. I practically has zero interest in it after it ends. I never played the game so I only have experience of the franchise through the anime. For me, the reason why it is forgotten is because it is kinda half-baked. Monster Rancher is such a patchwork job of an anime. It cobbles a lot of neat concepts and ideas but it never really flesh them out. The isekai aspect for example is practically pointless. You could easily take that aspect away from the story and it would barely change anything. Compare that to Digimon for example where the isekai aspect is integral to the story and character's motivation, goals and development. Even its central conceit of monsters living along with the humans feels more like a cosmetic element. This general lack of fleshing out of its concepts make it feel really generic. Moster Rancher just doesn't develop its ideas to be strong enough to have any lasting impact.
That's a really good point about the isekai element. I'm just thinking if it wasn't isekai how much difference would genki story make?
@@waggishwonderland Not much I guess. From what I can remember, Genki as an isekai protagonist doesn't really add much dynamics to the story. Genki doesn't even feel like an actual protagonist as he doesn't really lead the story but is just carried along, very reactive.
I loved this! Though was it ever fully aired in the UK? Never been able to watch it all. Always wanted to. Also anyone remember Flint the Great Time Detective? XD
So we did have flint as well right? I've seen so many comments and then when I googled it I'm like 'yo that looks sooo familiar!' I think it was on CITV for us maybe?
@ aye we did! I remember watching both Monster Rancher and Flint the Great Time Detective on Fox Kids (we were lucky and had Sky), but I think Flint was on BBC too. I’ve forgotten so much! Need to watch it for the nostalgia! I think BBC or CITV had Hamtaro too, I remember them being McDonalds toys! Man the 90s/00s kids tv was just the best. Ah millennial dopamine machine: nostalgia xD
@@timbobshe super monkey hyper team force go Cubix Cardcaptors I think CITV also had Megaman Nostalgiaaaaa 😭😭
never knew the game released first before the show
A lot didn't! They did zero marketing for the games
I never played any of the Monster Rancher videogames but I loved this cartoon.
Wasn't monster farm already taken from that fox family Saban show?
Might be an American thing?
@waggishwonderland copyrights are still a mess to deal with. Your not go to have two shows named the same as "monster farm" on air in the US like that lol
The child's monster-collecting boom chasing the Pokemon trend back then was nuts. Just dozens of attempts at failed franchises. Only a few that really did anything special or unique, as most were cynical cash grabs with no heart behind them. The Devil Children franchise was a poster child of the trend, but we got very little of it localized overseas. Lots of games and TWO anime series that added up to 100 episodes. You could not say they didn't *try*. Frankly they probably would have done better if they had stuck with the older themes of the other Shin Megami Tensei games. Trying to be a clone of something that already exists always has diminishing returns. I always have a soft spot for underdogs not trying to churn out a corporate product, though. Lots of love for the Jade Cocoon series. ... and for corporate products, I do really like Dragon Quest Monsters.
We never got the devil children, so I looked it up now and my God does it look a lot like Digimon
i only knew of the game
I watch it on Toonami aftermath every weekend, it's a great watch.
God I miss toonami
Several of Monster Rancher quirks I understand, for example the monsters honestly feel pretty basic and generic, but that's because those are the base monsters, breeding the more interesting looking hybrids is a mechanic of the game. Some are pretty cool! However what I can't understand for the life of me is making Suezo the mascot. That thing is hideous! I've never raised a Suezo in the games, I can't stand it.
I think they were stuck with suezo and is why they had to scramble in getting mochi as a quick co-mascot
Its Mu, not Moo lol. Pronounced the same but totally diff words lol
Haha yeah I was just having a bit of fun for the little joke I put in
@waggishwonderland lol I thought so, but wanted to comment bout it just in case
@@frankbarrie6785 i appreciate your keen eye 👁️
I remember getting the tubs of monster figures from Walmart. I had so many color swaps of pixie, I'm sure that didn't affect my taste in women growing up.
What about Shinzo AKA Mushrambo, that anime is even more forgotten than Monster Rancher and it came around the same time hehe. It was from Toudou Izumi the same creator of Magical DoReMi, Ashita no Nadja and all Precure
I don't think mushrambo reached Europe unfortunately.
Never liked MR. Me: th-cam.com/video/ba7SjpKAyg8/w-d-xo.html

Bro...what...-_-
I remember catching it on syndication as a kid. Definitely an underrated gem of a show with an awesome story. Hell Mu’s introduction is still chilling for me. 😊 I think the main problem with its marketing (aside from the lack of it) was how it was both unique yet also somehow plain at the same time. That’s the best I can describe it. 🤔 Also didn’t help that it used to channel hop a lot. I didn’t find out about the second season until like a decade after it had stopped airing. Apparently the west coast wasn’t good enough for it 😢while the east coast and Canada were just right. 😤
I still would like to watch all the episodes.
It's all on TH-cam!
@@waggishwonderland yeah I saw, on episode 4 now. 😂
