Postcard from Ashcombe (1) ...approaching the station from the west...
Firstly, thank you to all subscribers to the ‘Lowleigh’ videos. Your support and encouragement are most appreciated. Sadly, Lowleigh is no more. But I have incorporated as many as possible of the buildings and smaller models into my new layout ‘Ashcombe’. And some of my favourite old locos are still plying their trade albeit converted now to EM gauge.
Lowleigh was, of course, closely based on Highley, Arley and the railways and trains of the Severn Valley and thereabouts. Moving south, the lines radiating from Wells in Somerset are the inspiration for Ashcombe.
The new layout is longer than Lowleigh, offering wider perspectives but progress is slow. Instead of waiting for the layout to be completed before filming, Julia and I have decided to offer a series of ‘Postcards from Ashcombe’ each featuring a completed section of the layout. We hope this new approach will provide enough interest and entertainment. Our first postcard looks at the western approach to Ashcombe station. Prairie tank 4560 heads an early morning 'up' service and Collett Goods 2260 passes with a 'down' freight.
Music featured on the video is ‘The Banks of Green Willow’ by George Butterworth performed by the English String Orchestra.

Lowleigh - the end of the line
มุมมอง 31Kปีที่แล้ว
This is our last visit to Lowleigh Station. It's 1964 and much has changed since our first video set in 1957 - 'A Day at Lowleigh Station'. Lowleigh is situated about halfway down the fictitious branch which runs between Kidderminster and Brombury in Worcestershire. The model is to the scale of 4mm:foot, track gauge '00'. 'Lowleigh' was featured in MRJ numbers 241 & 242 and several shorter artic...
Brombury Loco
มุมมอง 20K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Brombury Loco is a 4mm scale model of a small engine shed in the Worcestershire market town of Brombury, terminus of the ex-Great Western Railway branchline which wends its way through Lowleigh from Kidderminster. The video depicts a typical day in the life of the shed on a Saturday in late September 1953.
Sunday Special
มุมมอง 12K3 ปีที่แล้ว
On Sunday 19th August 1962 British Railways organised an excursion from Brombury and Kidderminster to the Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester. In this visit to Lowleigh we see the 'special' as it makes its way up and down the branch.

Diesel Debut at Lowleigh
มุมมอง 12K4 ปีที่แล้ว
In our third visit to Lowleigh, a passing station on the ex-GWR branch which wends its way from Kidderminster to the market town of Brombury, we see the introduction of a diesel service on the line. It is 1958 and a class 122 diesel mechanical single unit replaces the small prairie and its B-set which previously provided the passenger service. Please make a donation to the Railway Children char...
Three Vans For Tuckers of Lowleigh
มุมมอง 19K5 ปีที่แล้ว
In our second visit to Lowleigh, a passing station on the ex-GWR branch which wends its way from Kidderminster to the market town of Brombury, we watch the morning freight arrive. Three vanloads of supplies are delivered to Tuckers' agricultural business situated in the station yard. A now empty mineral wagon, which has been unloaded since our last visit, is collected from the local merchant's ...
A Day at Lowleigh Station
มุมมอง 95K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Welcome to Lowleigh. After an introduction to the branchline and the station, the video depicts all of the trains that call at the wayside passing station on a typical summer's day in 1957 when railways still served their local communities. Lowleigh is situated about halfway down the fictitious branch which runs between Kidderminster and Brombury in Worcestershire. The model is to the scale of ...
Better than real? Bloody close.
Thanks Norm. All the best, Peter
Oh England, where art thou?
Indeed! Best wishes, Peter
Takes me back to my schoodays when railways were just like this. They didnt have long to go but I am so pleased I did experience many. This set up is perfect. Many congratulations
Thank you for your kind words. I hope you enjoy the other 'Lowleigh' videos and 'A Postcard from Ashcombe' (my latest layout). With best wishes, Peter
The fam cottage ❤️
Thank you but there's no central heating!
I watch this film so often. It’s absolutely beautiful. It’s my perfect dream to live here. Just love it.
Thank you. Best wishes, Peter
idk how you managed to get a chuff every quarter turn but you sure did.
Luck to be honest! Best wishes, Peter
The allure of GWR in 4mm is so so strong....! Lovely layout!
Thank you for your kind comment. Best wishes, Peter
Lovely modeling Peter and great storytelling Julia, thank you both. Can't wait to see more of Ashcombe. Sad though Lowleigh is no more, Dr Beeching and his cuts
Thank you for your kind and encouraging words Michael. I've nearly finished the next bit - just trying to get the level crossing gates working! Best wishes, Peter
Magical and enchanting as Lowleigh was, so good to see you back.
Thank you - slow but steady progress to report! Best wishes, Peter
Entertaining video. Just one thing - the distance signal is facing the wrong way! It should be the other way around with the ladder to the rear! The home signal, with a red arm would normally be immediately before the tunnel. Thanks for uploading.
Thanks for your comments. The fixed distant is on the 'wrong' side of the line for easier sighting by drivers emerging from the tunnel but I think it's correctly placed though not the full quarter of a mile from the station. Best wishes, Peter
@@peterharrison6230 From the point of view of videoing the layout, a home signal would look better at this location, since the camera cannot be placed at the viewpoint of the driver leaving the tunnel! Have fun.
So good to see a new series of videos coming from you. Looking forward to more. Greetings from Oz.
Good to hear from you and thanks for watching. We've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
I just came across this video ... Subscribed!!! 👍
Thanks Shawn, you might enjoy the 'Lowleigh' videos on my channel. Best wishes, Peter
Brilliant return. Thank you both. 👍👍👍
Good to hear from you Robert and thanks for watching. We've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
I’d love to visit one day. Great Britain looks very beautiful and relaxing. Xx
Thank you
Good to see you back. I'm looking forward to more lineside adventures 👍✌️🤞💜 I love that over bridge it feels very; Lechlade, Fairford, Carterton. That right wing wall abutment area looks of the era too but maybe needs the Civil Engineer to cast his eye over it just to be sure🤔🤔😉 Charming music and voice over too👍✌️💜😊
Good to hear from you. Yes you're right about Carterton/Brize Norton - not intentional but I've just looked at a pic in 'Great Western Branchline Steam 2 p72'. Re the Civil Engineer again you are right! Because of the curve of the track and the embankment the bridge is hardly visible from a normal viewpoint and I didn't notice the wonky abutement til we watched the video (the camera was perched in the field in the corner). It would take major earthworks to fix it. Comments always welcome and thanks for watching. We've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
Great that you are back
Good to see you both back making great videos. Looking forward to watching more from Ashcombe👍
Good to hear from you Robert and thanks for watching. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
Glad to see you back with your new layout, Peter. I'm looking forward to seeing what the next postcard reveals.
Lovely video! Great to see you both back for more videos. Very much looking forward to part 2!
Good to hear from you and thanks for watching. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
Great to see you both back. You've been missed!
Lovely to see you again. At my age it is fine to have somewhere to imagine you are
Thanks for your kind words Jeremy. We try not to be over-sentmental in the videos but nostalgia is a powerful thing. I have no memories of GW branchlines personally as I was brought up in industrial Wallsend on Tyneside - shipyards, pits and heavy industry and endless 'J27s', ''Q6s', rattling wagon trains and lots of smoke - lovely!, Best wishes, Peter
Share all the foregoing comments. Look forward to further postcards and a printed timetable 🖐
Good to hear from you James and thanks for watching. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). I must admit I haven't yet decided where Ashcombe is supposed to be. The track layout is based in Wookey Station in Somerset but I'm not sure whether a timetable will emerge. We found it a bit restricting on 'Lowleigh' especially in the final years! All the best, Peter
Thanks for responding, Peter. Growing up with Portreath, Berrow, Charmouth et al, I always felt that operating to a timetable added to the authenticity and plausibility of a model, yet it is done so little these days. Anyway, thrilled to have your modelling back on TH-cam, and looking forward to further ‘postcards’ 👊
Welcome back what a superb layout so atmospheric !
Thank you for getting in touch. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
Great to see you back with a new video! Great work , I have been waiting for it. Cheers from Canada Bob
Beautiful model, excellent attention to detail, captures the atmosphere of the steam railway perfectly
Thank you for your encouraging words Robert. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
Oh my goodness!! I’m so pleased you are back. Your videos are just the best and the narration and filming superb. Very calming - thank you 🥰
Thank you for such encouraging words Ernie, we did wonder whether there was enough interest in 'Postcard 1'. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
Simply a wonderful railway.
So kind, thank you. Best wishes, Peter
What a lovely soothing way to enjoy a cup of coffee - thank you!
Pleased to hear your reaction to 'Postcard 1'. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
Well done Peter and Julia. Pleased to see a first edition of EM gauge Ashcombe, although I still go through all the past episodes of Lowleigh. I think I recognise Digitrains sound files in your locos as I`ve got them in my O Gauge stock.
Thank you for your kind words John. We have re-used many of the buildings and other bits and pieces from Lowleigh on Ashcombe so there will be some 'deja vue' moments! You're right about Digitrains - I've dealt with them since the 'Digby Manor' days. It's been interesting to watch how the firm has developed. I've always found them helpful and good to deal with and enjoy atrip to the showroom in Lincoln from time to time. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
Huzzah, you are back🙂
Good to hear from you Andrew and thanks for watching. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
It’s great that you & Julia are back ,really looking forward to seeing your new programs .Again first class scenery & detail .😊
Good to hear from you Steven and thanks for watching. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
Great to see you both back, Peter and Julia!
Great to see you back Peter! A worthy successor to Lowleigh. It makes me want to live there😊 Just wonderful.
Very pleased to hear from you Phil and that you enjoyed the video. We worried that it might not have enough interest but it seems to have gone well. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
Welcome back, looking forward to this
Good to hear from you and thanks for watching. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
Wonderful!! Welcome back Peter. As someone from Somerset this is lovely.
Thank you Rich, good to hear from you. The track layout is based on Wookey by the way. Since uploading the video we've added a bit more information to the video description. Hoping to do Postcard 2 soon (when I get the pesky level crossing gates to work!). All the best, Peter
So this is a model ? Not real world?
Yes it is!
the music scenery is all awesome, the work put in is excellent
Thanks you so much for your encouraging words. I hope you enjoy the other 'Lowleigh' videos on my channel. Best wishes, Peter
I still miss this lovely layout! One of my favourites ever. How’s the replacement coming along?
Hi Phil. Slowly but fairly surely is the answer. Time and cash are the main problems...EM is MUCH more expensive than you are led to believe. I'm finishing the layout bit by bit and will do a video about each segment...we've nearly finished the first one so watch this space as they say! All the best, Peter
The imagination runs wild. Just give me the smell of burning coal and engine oil, some steam and smoke and I'd be right there! Those poor engines really do reflect the declining years of BR, unwashed, limescale leaks and runs. The uneven (rocky) trackwork is evocative of neglect and decay. The driver will need to take care over the points, he doesn't want a waggon to derail. Wonderful!
Thank you...it's not easy when you've shelled out a hundred pounds or so for a loco to get out the weathering colours!. Peter
"Well I don't know, the driver is comfy and all that, but the fireman must still be wondering where to put the coal! "🔥 Having been brought up on the well-known blue tank engine, I'm sure this DMU is Daisy 😁 I do hope the track alignment isn't bad for her swerves! - Another enchanting video - thank you so much.
Thank you...Edward was always my favourite ...hence the Midland 2P in 'Sunday Special'! Peter
@@peterharrison6230 Midland 2P is a very handsome engine, I like them too.
Beautiful, evocative, imaginative, wonderfully narrated. Thank you for sharing your GWR OO world with us. I felt I was shrunk down to 1/76th scale and wandering along by a beautiful west country location.
Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words. I hope you will enjoy the other 'Lowleigh' videos on my channel. Best wishes, Peter
Thank you, yes, I already have.
Brill!
Thanks David. Best wishes, Peter
Great model railway and very detailed and realistic. Plus great video and narration. However. Where are all the passengers. The train is empty so the railway must be making a loss. Don't get me wrong but almost all model railways I watch don't have any passengers in the passenger cars. The whole purpose of railways is to carry freight and people so come on modelers fit people in your trains. I am building a Z gauge model railway and all my passenger cars and locos have people in them. If I can do it in such a small scale there is no excuse for other scales not having people. You put them in stations and towns and in other scenery so fit them in passenger trains. Please don't take this the wrong way. Its just me having a slight moan.
You're right of course John. In my defence there are passengers in the B-set, on the station occasionally and in the 'Sunday Special' set. Getting the body off, and more to the point back on the Dapol diesel is considerably easier said than done! Thanks for your comments, Peter
Superb video, I have subscribed and hope to watch videos about your new layout.
Thank you. Best wishes, Peter
A poignant story, superbly told.
Thank you...I hope you can watch the earlier, more cheerful, videos. Lowleigh is being re-born as 'Ashcombe' in EM! Best wishes, Peter
Just popped by to see if Ashcombe is nearing completion........ any morsel will do........... Best Wishes, John
There is some progress to report John but I may have bitten off more than I can chew! I'm intending to finish it bit-by-bit and do a 'postcard' from each completed section beginning with 'Turkey' or 'Bantam' Curve'...the approach to Ashcombe. (Apologies to the G&W Stean Railway!) Best wishes, Peter
Beautiful model and operation. I really enjoyed this video.👍
Thanks for your kind words Martin. Best wishes, Peter
Excellent presentation with realistic rail traffic movements.
Thank you very much for your comments. Best wishes, Peter
More commentary from Julia
She's pleased to hear that!
Superb .... do good to see Operation like this - well Done ✅✅✅
Thank you very much for your comments. Best wishes, Peter
