099: Building a Life of Recovery with a Plant-Based Foundation with Adam Sud
Addiction is a pervasive issue affecting millions of people worldwide. In the United States alone, over 20 million adults suffer from substance use disorders, with relapse rates ranging between 40% to 60%, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). These statistics underscore the immense challenge of overcoming addiction, particularly when conventional treatment methods often fall short. As bleak as these numbers are, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that innovative approaches, such as plant-based nutrition, can play a critical role in recovery.
Adam Sud’s Transformational Journey
One person who knows a lot about addiction is Adam Sud, the founder and CEO of Plant-Based for Positive Change. Adam has emerged as a leading advocate at the powerful intersection of plant-based nutrition, mental health, and addiction recovery. His journey is one of profound transformation, moving from a life marred by morbid obesity, addiction, and chronic diseases to becoming a beacon of hope and inspiration for those facing similar battles.
Early Life Struggles and the Roots of Addiction
Adam shares his experiences growing up in Texas, where he lived in a loving household with supportive parents. However, around the age of 12, Adam's life took a turn when his father became hypercritical of his and his twin brother's appearance, particularly their weight. This scrutiny triggered feelings of inadequacy and anxiety, which Adam tried to suppress through rebellious behavior. Diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed Ritalin, Adam recalls how this began a downward spiral into substance abuse, which he initially used as a means of coping with his insecurities.
The Dark Path of Addiction
Adam’s story of addiction is harrowing. What started as prescribed medication for ADHD evolved into a dependency on drugs like Adderall, which provided him with a temporary sense of confidence and acceptance. This substance abuse masked his deeper emotional pain but also led him into a life of criminal activity, severe obesity, and isolation. By the age of 30, Adam had hit rock bottom, weighing 350 pounds and on the brink of homelessness, with his life deteriorating physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
The Turning Point: Overdose and the Decision to Change
In 2012, after a near-fatal overdose, Adam experienced a pivotal moment of clarity. He realized that despite his circumstances, there was something about his life that he loved enough to fight for. This moment of insight prompted him to reach out to his family for help, leading to his admission into a treatment facility. It was during this time that Adam began to explore the potential of a plant-based diet as a foundation for his recovery.

Thank you Dr Esselstyn, I am in 2nd year of following the diet and it's working brilliantly so far. It's difficult convincing family to join in, but I am in it for the long term. If it works and I get to 82 yrs of age without any medicines/surgery, the plan is to donate half my networth to Dr Esselstyn's foundation to spread the message but it's still 32 years till it's proven.

Right Dr. Furhman, inflammation is closely related with the bodies attempt to heal itself. People don't understand that. When we eat plants sometimes we encounter a healing crisis, a term used to label the purging, the detoxing of the body, which is precisely what the body needs to get rid of inflammation. Unfortunately, the IGNORANCE of humanity is huge, they blame plants who are assisting the body in its healing journey, so they turn CARNIVORE, not knowing they've made a huge mistake and will continue overtime the self imposed injury.😢

Nice to know someone I followed outside veganism is also vegan! When I was a teen I was amazed at how much I could communicate with my cats (just in non-psychic ways lol). Realizing this (and expanding that empathy to all animals) eventually led to me to become vegan. I’ve heard the explanation that the animals who are being used for food on the soul level know and accept what is happening (heard this from another animal communicator). But the explanation that it’s so humans get their shit together is very comforting. I’ve been struggling with that one for a while. My dog definitely taught me I was capable of unconditional love. She succeeded there.

But .. she said she didn’t do it for the animal suffering after watching cow Spiracy 😔 only the impact on the environment. I really enjoyed this interview with Angela Fischetti. Dr. Sabatino, you asked great questions to elicit the hows and whys of Angela's life story and trajectory. Angela is wonderful - caring and compassionate; very dedicated to helping others live their best life by improving fitness and maintaining it throughout the senior years. She is an inspiring person and this comes across the zoom connection. I appreciated hearing how she developed her expertise over time. She is very perceptive and early on recognized the benefit of bringing in knowledge of physical therapy, chiropractic, yoga, and nutritional knowledge into her sphere of practice. This holistic approach is very meaningful in a coach or leader. Angela is always learning and keeping herself updated. I feel so fortunate that I can access her wisdom and expertise even though I am on the west coast and she is on the eastern shore. Thanks, Dr. Sabatino, for having her on your podcast. Wow, in one show, two of my dearest friends in the plant-exclusive movement. It brings a big smile to my face. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation that spanned Cyd’s background from her work as an art gallery owner to her present state as a wfpb educator and author. I have worked with Cyd on several projects and I have watched her appearances on many podcast shows. What stood out for me in this episode was her work with the Plan B part of her book, The Plan A Diet. I’ve been living this lifestyle since 1987 and I’ve rarely heard guidance on how to help people transition their diet and lifestyle. Cyd spells out in her book how to do this within 5-6 weeks. As always, with Dr. Frank Sabatino, who is my doctor, there are questions one rarely hears. He elevates a conversation while simultaneously making it real. He’s authentically present with his guests. Excellent broadcast and thank you, NHA, for sponsoring this truly excellent show.💜🌹

Think this post is maybe what you refer. Natural Hygiene was taught by Natives to USA medical people & those teachings remained the law of the land up until the late 1800's when big pharma began to take over making Natural Hygiene unjustly obsolete until early 1900's when Herbert M. Shelton re-founded the orthopaedic practice at his health sanatoriums & by the 1950's he ran for potus, but big oil land grabs & big pharma swindles had a monopoly by then, also it was further corrupted by the liquor industry that had spiraled out of control as a drug of choice ever since the 1930's. So it is way past time to make Natural Hygiene a part of our daily lives again, as the once sober apple cart was upset too many times over the years by oppressive governmental inebriated addicts who have been increasingly abusing a once sound medical practice here in America for far too long. Here is my take on needed improvements for those who have yet them or even considered changing these corrupt current laws yet. Back around the 70's reagan began shutting down state hospitals to save taxes for the rich resulting in an ever increasing spiral of homeless street people & overcrowded prisons. Reagan was inebriated on his bubbly. That points to another mess up that occurred back in the 30's when they made alcohol their drug of choice as legal recreation & criminalized other intoxicants. Past time for a resolution to both these gross errors. 1- make all drugs & alcohol legal medically with supervision. 2-drug & alcohol test all law enforcement, politicians, educators & gun owners at their own expense, never as illegal recreation in use currently. Until those insane obsolete laws, rules & regulations are changed with appropriate resolutions the errors of the past will continue to escalate.
