how the disaster: 'The Critic' showed Ian McKellen's brilliance
In early 2023, 'The Critic' was released to audiences only to be pulled quickly for re-editing due to its poor performance in theatres. Despite this setback and the film's overall disastrous reception, Ian McKellen's performance stood out remarkably. Join us as we dive into how McKellen's mastery of difficult dialogue highlights his exceptional talent in a film that otherwise failed to connect with its audience.
This video breaks down McKellen's ability to transform what many considered clunky and overly theatrical lines into a profound demonstration of acting brilliance. Why did the rest of the cast, including talented actors like Gemma Arterton and Mark Strong, struggle with the script, while McKellen excelled? We'll explore the specifics of his dialogue delivery and how it contrasts starkly with the efforts of his co-stars.

even just 10 minutes in, it feels like i’m tapping into friends having a good conversation. keep it up guys!
Thank you man, that's really nice to hear! Been a while since this one was released, would definitely say our episodes run a bit smoother now lol Fred
They deserve each other! and Knives was a kid...
Yeah totally agree man, maybe he should have ended up with Kim 😅
Would love to have see where baby driver would of gone in the rankings, personally maybe 1 or 2 like the writing isn't as tight as the other films but it has a soul to it.
CORRECTION: went through the first part calling The World's End: 'At World's End'. Sorry, not sure how we managed that - perhaps we're both just desperate to get onto Pirates of the Caribbean asap. Fred
I think a CC is a Movie which was not a success when 1st released, but it grows over time to be appricated for what it is and viewed by more people than at 1st release. Fight Club not a CC...
Fight Club is a how to movie, when we get tired of getting fucked....
@@naehafgh Fight Club is a very obvious 'how NOT to' movie.
yea exactly, a cult classic is a film that wasn't a huge success on release but has a grown a loyal audience and an appreciate by the general populous
Does the original Blade Runner fall into your definition of a cult classic? Fred
Absolute piss take mate 👍
Not a fan? 😅
Really love you work guys.
Appreciate it man, thank you ! 🙌 Fred
In my top 10 films of all time, but agree on last 20mins but its such a great film I forget last bit is rushed/slow... I did got to cinema to watch it when it came out.. "Gamer"....
The comic is way more interessting imo. Especially the last chapters flesh out the characters more. The movie is still amazing though
Did you manage to catch the cartoon series they released? I'm wondering whether it's worth the watch. Fred
@@MateNight I love it as much as I love the graphic novels and the movie. Two things I will mention is the man behind all of Scott Pilgrim, Bryan Lee O’Malley, is one of two writers for the anime. He considers each adaptation “its own thing” and I’ll leave it at that. Thanks for this video btw leaving a like and sub for sure.
Ah man that’s so kind of you to say thank you very much. I might check out the anime, been forever since I caught any - think it was JJK last I watched. What’s the best format out of all of the Scott pilgrims or are they all different enough that it’s not really needed? J
@@MateNight The first one that comes to mind when I think Scott Pilgrim, is the movie, as it was my introduction into the universe. That being said, it's porbably the most hollow of the 3, so I'll probably have them like this; 1a: Graphic Novels 1b: Anime 2: Movie 3: Game The game was probably least liked but I don't dislike it, I'm just not much of a 2D side scrolling beat em up type dude.
The great thing about Steve Buscemi in this movie is that the movie spends so much time establishing that he's kinda weasly and no one really likes him..but in the end, he's the only one that "understood the assignment". From the first time he shows up in the warehouse on, he is bang on right about everything. And when all is said and done..he's the only one smart enough to survive the situation.
Completely agree. He has an unusual charisma that comes more from his character and professionalism than his appearance. Good character great performance 👍 J
Difficult to register how bad RD would be with QT playing Mr pink. It would kill the film Buscemi proved himself in RD and his full range still not covered & that with boardwalk empire -a towering slow burn performance over five seasons
The commentary really reminds me of the Rest is History podcast which is a good thing! Steve Buscemi is one of the few actors that just stands out, his face just really draws your attention in every scene. I think he just looks so much like a guy you would just see walking around in day to day life so he just seems authentic and real.
Thanks man, just listened to the RIH podcast - that's a really kind comparison 🙌 He's very underrated IMO, always delivers in everything he's in. Fred
Buscemi's endless appeal is simply BDE.
Undisputed
Instant subscription after 1 min. Brilliant. Noiiice
That really means a lot, thank you 🙏 Fred
He's a fucking professional 😂
It was "golden girls"
Legend, thank you!
Little gem of a chat! Thx
Tarantino movies are copied from other movies he has watched. He has said this himself. In most of his movies you can find an older movie in witch the scene is the same. Also notice that Tarantino tends to use the same actors/ actress has his main characters. These actors become the character. Want to be like Tarantino then watch lots and lots and lots of movies.
Oh yeah totally agree, we actually just did a video on this. Personally not only do I take no issue with Tarantino’s “postmodernism” but actually I love how passionate he is J

Well, he’s not a thief at Amy Schumer level hahaha😂
You got that right - he doesn't make the shit he steals worse lol Fred
this is stupid
Not really
Aha maybe you’ll like the next one you see 👍 J
Not remotely what plagiarism means
How do you define it?
"Trying to pass of someone else's work as your own." Oxford dictionary Tarintino wrote the whole movie and directed it. So how can you credit someone else ? I think you mistake taking inspiration from someone's work and plagiarism.
@@ayderla789 That's and overly simplistic definition. Here's a better one (directly from the University of Oxford's webpage): "Presenting work or *ideas* from another source as your own, with or without consent of the original author, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement."
Yeah gotta say happy to be wrong but not sure I agree with you here. I think it even fits the simplistic definition. City on fire isn’t in the credits of reservoir dogs and the core plot of the movie is taken directly from it. It’s not speculation, QT has openly said it. That literally is trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own. For the record if you missed it in the video, we both love his work and take no issue with what he does. But I think it probably is still a form of soft plagiarism. J
What do you think of the “cartoon” style video?
Yeah it's good...maybe expand on it with a few more poses so the characters are a little more expressive. But it was edited well so it's not like we're staring at a static image. This is my first video watching your channel so good job I'll subscribe.
Oh my friend thank you so much for the feedback! And the subscribe both mean a lot. That is absolutely the plan if people like it we can invest some more time in making it better. More poses and a bit more detail in the face maybe 🤔 Thanks again! J
Make your own movie first, let people critique it, then talk smack about well established directors / writers. You're not anywhere close to RLMedia's level, and they've already done a full length feature film. Good luck.
I mean, do you think that only people who make films should be able to critique them? No smack talk intended on QT, the guy's incredible. I was more interested in understanding at what point the line is crossed... Fred
Tarantino is my favorite director and writer but come on dude……..stop lol. In order to critique films you gotta be established? If you know QT you know when he doesn’t like a film or actor or genre he is VERY outspoken about it and he doesn’t hide his opinions……so it’s ok for him to discuss but not others? Reservoir dogs is my all time favorite film but he absolutely straight up ripped off city on fire lol
Appreciate it crowz 🫡 think it does seem a little strong “you can’t comment on a film until youve made a full feature length”😅 J
The line between plagiarism and inspiration is blurry also he is really talented so who cares
Yep fair enough. Still, I found it very interesting when hearing about the similarities between City on Fire and Reservoir Dogs. And there is clearly a point when it goes to far, just hard to work out where that is... Fred
I don't know who I am, I don't know why I'm here, all I know is that I must subscribe
Welcome aboard mate ✊️ And best of luck with your existential crisis. Fred
"Can Marvel be saved?" They had one flop movie and people are acting like their entire company will collapse.... Please WB hasn't had a hit with a DCEU movie since like Aquaman, is it the end of DC? Most movie production companies would kill to be Marvel studies right now... Shit even before DP3 released.
Did you watch Deadpool 3?😅 the whole point in the movie is saving marvel! J
@@MateNight yes I did.. No the point of the movie was saving Deadpool's universe.
when done tastefully like paul walker's brother working with the team to complete the movie to pay homage to paul walker, but not just bringing them back for the sake of it no, id say its a very rare case when bringing people back makes sense
Yes great example. It was also done with the purpose of gracefully concluding the character arc. In some of these cases, you feel like a movie studio is just wheeling out a character that they have the rights to without any real need to do so. Fred
In general I would say a strong "no". We shouldn't be outsourcing work to AI, when real actors could be getting paid for the work.
Fair enough, are there any exceptions?
The Crow - Brandon Lee
Yep, good one. No idea how i feel about the one's where they die during filming - guess they have a right to complete the work with them superimposed in. Fred
No, I watched first 5 seconds and answered your question. rest of the video is irrelevant and if you think it is ok then there is something wrong with you, you should get yourself checked out by a professional.
Easy tiger
I’m my opinion it should Only ever be allowed if it’s given consent by the family. Otherwise it should be made completely and utterly illegal to ever use the likeness of any actor or person or for the studios or whatever to make contracts stating they can that actors have to sign. Oh and if they break that law it’s punishable by death because they effectively used the death of someone for profit and possibly made the ai say and do things the person wouldn’t have wanted to do, and most importantly without the family’s consent(last part is a joke 🤣🤣🤣)
😂 punishable by death Yeah seems fair - I’m with you on that although after 70 years maybe who cares at that point? Also some families can be real pieces of work so can they really be trusted?🤔 J
@@MateNight yeah! I don’t see why it wouldn’t be a fair deal. “Ask the family for consent to do da ai ting, and if no then don’t do da ting. If ya do da ting with the dead persons likeness you become dead person with a likeness…a likeness to death” 🤣🤣🤣 But yeah like after 70 years then maybe but also at that point there would likely be no point in doing it anyway. If there was anything they would do they would probably just do the typical thing where an actor/actress played the person who would have been dead for 70 years.
Yeah actually that’s a good point why would you be using an actor who has been dead for 70 years. What about Rudolph Valentino in a 2024 film?😮 I guess who’s really gonna be hurt and it would be interesting J
Algorithm randomly suggested your channel and wow very good quality videos.
Really appreciate it mate ✊️ Any film you'd be interested in seeing content on? Fred
Loved this one, well done Jambo
Could of saved Marvel overall, by making less films per year, spending more time with the main guys we want to see on screen, have better writers and spend more time developing good story's..
What do you think of the new animated style?🤔
Better
No, definitely don´t watch!
Bold claim, any particular reason? Fred
@@MateNight Just don´t watch. Who on earth wanna get robbed 139 mins of their life by Quentin Tarantino. Think about it you will never get that time Back, so don´t do it.
what do you mean initially not well received?
No marketing budget and critics broadly didn’t like it because it was too graphic and cartoonish. Not even legal to show in the UK for a while 😅 took a little bit to get the critics on side J
Should have called it Taransino Fred
Missed opportunity there
Should have said the n-word
Too soon for us to get cancelled pal Fred.
Love the new look of the boys
I know it's not the same, but Cyberpunk 2077 had one of the actors come back for the DLC with the ok of his family. Obviously only voice work, but it was done pretty well, you could hardly tell.
Similar situation with an anime we used to watch called Bleach, one of the American voice actors died and they have another cast member doing an impression of him. Always felt that was an interesting direction to go. Famously, they also used an impersonator for Hugo Weaving's part in Infinity War whilst he was still alive - people don't seem to have as much of an issue with that. Fred
@@MateNight not sure why I didn't get a notification for this. Impressions are an interesting workaround I never thought of. Feels more ethical than the AI in Cyberpunk's situation.
The algorithm is killing it. This video is such a great idea, audio is great, video is well made, and you guys have under 300 subscribers? Keep up the great work, guys. I think of this movie whenever I think of the idea of 'show don't tell'. While there is a lot of narration, the narration is over film that would probably be sufficient, like think of the scene where the guy goes into the count room and each step is narrated. It also sets up an interesting moment when Nicky is in the cornfield and his narrator voice reacts to his character on screen being hit with the bat. (So I just went back and watched the count room scene via clip on youtube with the audio muted, and it plays out like it could have been a silent film. Ace gets out of his fancy car, goes in, meets some other men in suits, they walk onto the floor with a super wide shot where they are lost among the gamblers and lights, cut to the stacks of coins, i.e. the point of all the lights and glamour, cut to a machine counting the money and so on, then the bagman comes in and you can even get the info that he is there, but nobody acknowledges him except the guard who gives a tiny nod on the way out that he doesn't return. I get that we know the story, but try it out and watch that scene on mute. I think the narration was a style choice, not a lazy one) Of the three options in your video, I'd pick Tarantino. Partly because I'd have liked to see him forced into a bigger production earlier than Kill Bill and see what he was capable of. Partly because I think his 70s music would have been a bit weirder. I'd have loved to see a Michael Mann version of this story. Also Tony Scott, but I could say that about half the films made in the 90s. And I can't help but think of Barry Levinson, which sounds like I looked it up (I did), but I remember the movie Bugsy vividly from watching it as a kid, about Bugsy Siegel and the founding of Las Vegas. I could imagine this almost as a last part of a trilogy, Bugsy about the man who saw the potential and then Casino about the men who actually exploited that potential and 'fucked it all up' as they say in the film, kind of a beginning and an end. There could be a middle part of the trilogy about the rat pack and Elvis era when it was at its peak.
Richard, you're an absolute legend. Thank you so much for taking the time to give such a detailed response, we both really appreciated it ✊️ Your point about the exposition-heavy narration being an artistic choice is a very interesting one, that neither of us considered. Have you any ideas as to why he would have chosen to do that? Personally, whether deliberate or not, it didn't work for me at all. I agree that the film is perfect for Tarantinofying - the soundtrack in particular would absolutely slap 👌 Mann and Scott are also great shouts, can't say I'm familiar with the work of Levinson though. My first thought went to Bugsy Malone before you clarified haha 😄 Is it worth a watch? Fred

...then what is the conflict for DeNiro's character? What is he doing it all for?
Well, here’s my thoughts: he’s a career man. He wants to make the Tangier as big as possible. He’s a professional, the best around at what he does. That’s always driven him. The conflict then is between him and Nicky. Ace wants to (sort of) go legit, Nicky wants to take advantage of the lack of organised crime in Vegas. Actually a really cool bit of conflict that I was 100% invested in and makes an excellent film. Since the Nicky and Ginger affair never amounts to anything, the ginger element becomes superfluous. I wouldn’t mind but it’s also infuriating to be audience to and has no material impact on the gripping Ace/Nicky story. It can be scrapped and the film then also happens to become a more palatable size at the same time. What do you reckon? J
