Brown Coating Western Spurs

I show in detail how to properly brown coat steel spurs to get a rich dark color and make your overlays really stand out !! Material List: Birchwood/Casey Plum Brown gun coating, fleece swab, glove, handy propane torch with click on switch, paper towels, scuff pad ( not to abrasive), 1/2 gallon of distilled water, baking soda, and some sort of rack with a wire to hang spurs from afterwards, WD4...
Putting Nice Caps on Your Spur Rivet Heads

You want to dress up your spurs? Cover the rowel rivet heads with some nice caps. These can be copper, brass, sterling, gold or any metal you like. They are easily made by cutting a 7/16" to 1/2" round disc, and doming it to fit the rivet head like you want.

      My orbital is from a wood carving supply. I have had it for 7-8 years. Never no problems. Much cheaper than engraver’s supply toys! Its reversible and speed controlled. Fits all the engraver bits.

    Hi John--I'm interested in your larger torch because I make musical instruments and I need a hotter torch than my Map gas torch. I need to silver solder 3/16 to 1/4" thick brass together on an approximately 15 degree angle joints. What and where to buy? Thank you for your advice! Tom

    • @JohnNordDesigns
      @JohnNordDesigns หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is called a Acetylene air torch. It runs off of a bottle of Acetylene and the torch mixes air with it. You can find kits on ebay and amazon with different size tips, a hose, regulator and torch for about $150. I run mine off of a B tank. Hope that helps.

    • @JohnNordDesigns

      To attach rowel to shank you use 3/16” dia headed solid rivets….or if you welding then in, just use 3/16” rod (steel)

      Thank you, that means so much to me! Yes, I took my first engraving class in Alpine, Tx. and returned another time, from Johny Weyerts. He no longer teaches though. I also learned alot from watching Bruce Cheaney and ordering some of his video cd's. I then enrolled in a silversmith class with Wilson Capron and learned to solder and do alot of the things I do. I also took a week of private lessons building spurs from Wilson, which was very fortunate. Wilson is one of the best. He can be found here on You Tube and on the web.....he teaches beginner to advanced classes. I am self taught on jewelry making. Mike Pardue, and Stewart Williamson taught me buckles...... so you see, I have been fortunate at getting the help I needed. Most of all.... my experience is from practice and not being afraid to try. This is why I am doing these videos. I truly want to help every person that wants to learn. I paid for alot of lessons, and it wasn't easy....I got ALOT of help from Western Artisans that were willing to share some free knowledge 10 yrs ago. I don't have the facilities to teach classes at the moment. But I do want to someday. I don't have a desire to make money from these videos, and I don't.....I just want to give back. Thanks for watching.....and watch all you can, and try all you can. Practice... failure.... practice.... succeed !!!

    Thank you John! I learned what I have been doing wrong by not drilling a hole and coming in from a side edge. I was always trying to save on back plate but created so many sawing problems I now realize. Tiny pieces were always flopping around and so hard to control and stabilize without the full border there. I think this will be a game changer for my sawing going forward! ❤

    You are truly a master and I take my hat off to you! I am seeing with each video I watch that you just know how to do everything and anything. I am curious as to how John Nord artist extraordinaire came to be? Do you have or would you consider doing a video of your story and jewelry history? You are so versatile and well rounded in all aspects of jewelry fabrication. So many focus on one aspect and stay there and become well known for that specialty. You are excellent in all. I doubt there is anything that can be thrown your way that you cannot do. I am truly amazed and thankful to be able to watch you at work.❤ BTW I really missed the Dave Stamey music!

      Thank you for the kind comments. In one of my videos, I think it is “ learning the craft” I talk about how i got started. I was working on a Ranch, when the boss ask me if I could build a pair of spurs. I did. Then he wanted silver on them, and paid for me to go to the “ Johny Weyerts engraving school.” He is a master and I remained friends with him to this day, visiting him regularly. I am also close friends with Wilson Capron. He made a huge impact on my work. Look him up here on you tube. He is president of the “ traditional cowboy arts assoc.” and one of the best there is.

Very interesting and I appreciate all the extra steps to keep track of all the pieces. I will watch this several times as I had to zoom in to see better. Then rewind to zoom back out to read what I was watching. This video packed a lot of info. to absorb. I would have loved to be looking over your shoulder to watch this ring coming to life. Thank you John for sharing with us all your tips and tricks to make your beautiful creations. You are an amazing artist and I appreciate you!❤ Just a suggestion but perhaps you would be willing to film your next true inlay ring as well and show even more of the process. I would love to have seen how you actually cut the tiny slivers of turquoise, etc. I think this process deserves having a Part 1, Part 2 etc. it’s a lot of information and a lot of steps but I am hanging on every bit of it.

    John I have a tip for you that I came up with to find the spot to use for cutting out your stone. Take the exterior of your paper you cut out from rubbing out your interior inlay paper pattern piece. Use that as a “frame” for moving over your stone and auditioning different spots. When you find your perfect spot insert your paper cut out pattern into the frame holding it in place while you remove the frame and then trace around your piece. Voilà!
