Electric Heat: Cheaper Than You Think
Garage or shop heat. There is no way electric is that cheap or there is no way it only cost that much or it's a waste of money to heat shop, so I am told. Let's look at the data and talk through how electric heat in your shot can be affordable.

4 year Mahindra Compact Tractor Update - Is it worth buying?
I’ve used my electric heater for almost 20 years. Wish I went gas. It costs me roughly $180 per month in Chicago. I looked at all my electric bills. That’s around $800 a year! Gas roughly 30 a month extra. Changed my electric out a year ago.
@@kenblaese8719 definitely depends on how you use the heat and utility rates. Thanks for stopping in!
The key to his result is by lowering the temp, insulation performance goes up.
Essentially, keeping the lower temp you reduce the heat trying to escape the building therefore making it appear more effective. Appreciate you stopping in!
Let me know your thoughts below!
If you want to heat with electricity, the most efficient way is a heat pump. I heat with a mini split ductless unit with a typical COP of 2.5. This means for every watt of electricity I get 2.5 watts of heat. Install one of these in your shop and you will cut your electric bill by at least 50%.
Correct and you also get AC! Buy no means is the unit I have the most efficient when it comes to cost per btu, however I wanted to highlight that using electric in general is not guaranteed to break the bank. I plan to install a minisplit this year so I can enjoy AC and heat. Days like today where it's-5 out and forecast to go to -11f make me nervous to use a minisplit, I'll just have to make sure I buy the best low temp unit i can. Thanks for stopping in!
@@rayherriott6517 what is the lowest temp it will operate?
It depends on the unit, some don't work below 10 degrees F and some work to -15... they all lose efficiency as it gets colder and colder
@@k6outdoors That's true - however they never get a COP below unity. For most of the time in my area temperatures are above 0F and that results in a substantial electric saving over a normal resistive heater.
Yep your right, sounds like i need to buy a minisplit and demonstrate the differences!
You actually keep your garage very cold. This helps with cost a lot as you lose less heat. If you doubled your temp to be comfortable. You would probably triple your costs. Gas or oil would be cheaper in cost per BTU. You have chosen the most convenient. It's a fine choice if you can afford it.
@danielmackenzie680 precisely, i just want it warm enough to keep things from freezing. By no means is a coil induction electric heater the cheapest option to run, it however can be affordable if you are intending to use it like I do. Thanks for stopping in
I forgot to add that LP vs Electric can vary greatly and in my area you could expect to pay around $1.50 for LP vs $3.75 ish for electric for the same btu output. If gas is higher or electric is cheaper then the scales obviously tip.
you must have one nice ass poco. we getting raped out here
here in ky my electric company ( licking valley) charges 14.35cents per killowatt. my garage is 16x30 i keep it at 55 degs, im charged 275 per month for the whole month just for my garge. im running a 10,000 watt furnace but dont use but 5000 waTTs on low.
@shawnwagers6061 based on that, it sounds like your heater is running alot to keep it at that temp, somewhere around 6 hours per day on average. I assume the building is well insulated?
@k6outdoors yes it runs 24/7. Lots of paint. Can't let it freeze.
Mostly nonsense. Electricity is the most expensive way to heat a building if you calculate $ per btu. I have researched this heating my cabin. Propane cost 1/3 the price of electricity.
@VinceWaechter it definitely depends on cost of the inputs, LP drastically varies depending on location. Using electeic induction heating for a whole home would not be the best route. Electric heatpump with coil assit in extreme cold would be the best option for efficiency
I've read that anything running on electric is like burning money in really cold areas.
I live in Iowa and it's currently 10 degrees, checkout the video i just put together, i think you'll be surprised. You also have to think that whatever you use as a fuel costs some kind of money. th-cam.com/video/H-S4WSJFWMU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=br4jUnoZkcsaALBr
thumbs up ( I was going to say to put in a heat pump, but by the time you consider the initial investment, for how much electric you use, seems you are doing the most overall best thing ) We use a heat pump in our garage, but it was there when we moved in and until it breaks we will use it. Maybe consider something like a Mr buddy heater just in case the power goes out. I have also found out that Propane at about $3.50 per gallon cost me about the same as electric strip heat How much did it cost you for that interesting, easy to use, high tech heater ( mated to solar ) you are using? We have "paid off" solar also, it was a great investment , ROI, for us.
Hey, i appreciate you stopping in! I too have considered a heat pump/ mini split setup for the shop; i still might as it would be great to have AC out in the shop. Theoretically I would be able to cool and heat it all year for a very affordable price. I have the same scenario here as well, my solar array is paid off and work very well. The heater really isnt specific to solar but its expense to run is 100% offset by our solar panels production for our property. I picked up the original King Electric ECO2 from a local home improvement store (Menards). The ECO2s+ can be found online and was sent to me by King Electric. I was able to pick the heater up for around $600 but its been several years ago, I am however impressed with its performance. Take Care!

Thank for the great video. I have been trying to decided between an electric heater and propane. I currently have no LP on my property. Looking like electric may be the way to go. Like you said by the time you get a tank and then pay rental, and piping install. Electric I can pull all the permits and do the install myself. Plus no venting and no explosion hazard from fumes.
Its been a great solution and really like the electric heat, its been reliable affordable and safe!
DO NOT OVERFILL THAT ONE POUND TANK It has a safety release valve. As the tank warms up, it might build up enough pressure to release gas. If it finds a spark you'll have a fire or explosion. NOTE: That is why it is a violation of DOT laws to transport tanks you have refilled at home. Put some of those in the trunk of a car on a hot day and you can blow the car to hell and back. Whichever brand of tank you buy, weigh it full from the store and never fill it to be heavier than the store bought weight. If you insist on transporting those in a vehicle save the four way plastic restraint and the caps so you can make it appear they are factory, NOT refilled. The fine can be as high as $100,000.
🤬
You need weigh that tank if the tank temp was the same you didnt fill it
No way you heated your garage with electric heater for the winter for $150 no way yeah maybe if you kept a thermostat at 45°
@Poncho758 correct, it's mentioned in the video i set it at 45 , above freezing at all times unless I am out there. Good insulation makes a huge difference. I know for a fact the units run time each month and the utility rates to figure cost. Thanks for stopping in.
Per month
I'd encourage you to watch this video. th-cam.com/video/H-S4WSJFWMU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1HWtzLrkhNw9yXiI
It ran 200 hrs. That's not .uch so i assume you only heat the shop when you are in there. Is that correct ?
@cinderellaslifeadventures7269 200 hours is with the heater set consistently at 45 degrees and also includes if i turn it up when I go out there. For December of 2024 it cycled a total of 35 hours according to ecobee.
now when i put mine together, and don't read the directions, i have a good idea how to assemble it thanks for the how to...also i think i will wash the grill top before i put it together....just bought one 1/6/25 on walmart website for $147 and i got an adapter hose there too

I've done a similar modification to my shelving(same style). I would recommend a cross bar or two between the wheels. It stops you from being able to roll things under but it adds a significant amount of strength. The shelf cross bars aren't as permanent and can lift out. Also, casters are generally rated for 3, not four. This is so that if you roll it on uneven ground and one wheel lifts, you are still within the rating. Beyond those two changes, it's a great idea and I'm always surprised that companies don't build a rolling rack like this.

I use a nail in the fill hole to purge pressure. There is a relief valve on the side of the 1 lb,some pull this up with needle nose pliers to purge
Ya need ta purge the excess pressure afore doing that. Also close the large valve before ya tip ot up.becouse some will flow back into the 5 gal.leave in sun outside. If any leaks leaks Do this with his method and you'll usually get a full or close to full 1 lb
I love my rear blade for snow removal, best tip I have is bring in the top link so when the blade is down its angled forward, that way it wont dig in and rip anything up
@@kennyp507 great tip and thanks for stopping in!
The problem with doing that is that when you shorten the top-link, it requires you to drop the 3PH lower before the blade hits the ground. If the forward hitch end of the implement is lower than the blade end, when you angle the blade, the end if the blade closer to the tractor will be lower than the end further from the tractor, and you’ll gouge you gravel surface. Adjust the top link so that the implement is level front to back when the blade is on the ground. Then when you angle the blade it wont also tilt it side go side. If the blade is scraping up too much of your gravel, either turn it around backwards, or fit a steel pipe over the edge. I have a 1 1/4” steel pipe fit on mine so I don’t have to worry when the ground isn’t frozen.
Nice job working with the kiddos
