New Eagle Harbor
มุมมอง 3652 ปีที่แล้ว
I got the bug to build some structures but needed a place to put them. I decided to expand Eagle Harbor so I lengthened to road through town and updated the topography with hills and rocks and trees then added the structures shown in the video. Hope you like the change. You can compare this video to the end of my video of the Boat train to see how much different the area is.
The Boat Train
มุมมอง 1.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Each OP session runs the boat train from Arcadia to Eagle Harbor where a car float arrives daily. A local switch crew operating A&BR # 7, a 2 truck Climax, unloads the float in preparation for the arrival of the boat train. The crew will load the float with the cars from Arcadia and the boat train crew will return to Arcadia with the off-loaded cars.

      James, so glad you like the layout. I don't currently have any plans for tutorials, the methods I used to build it have been well documented by many others over the years. I have not done anything I would consider unique I just strive to do everything as well as I can. As for the mountains, I hand carved all of them using Hydrocal and molding plaster.

    What is "keep alive"? This is something new to me.

    • @arcadialogger
      @arcadialogger ปีที่แล้ว

      A keep alive is a series of capacitors and diodes that store power while the locomotive is on powered tracks so that should the loco come to a dirty spot or dead frog in a turnout the keep alive releases power to kep the loco moving.

    • @alanglasscock4242
      @alanglasscock4242 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arcadialogger Ah, that's really cool as I was wondering what the issues might going through switches and the like with this new DCC and how to overcome them. Your replay generates another question. How in the world do you squeeze all that "hardware" inside the tight spaces in an HO loco?

    • @arcadialogger
      @arcadialogger ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alanglasscock4242 Fitting all the pieces into some locos is quite a challenge but with the size of the componants getting smaller all the time it gets a little easier and a little creativity helps. For example, the speeder # 12 has the speaker under the hood, the decoder in the cab and the keep alive is in the water tank behind the cab. Skip

    Great work and a joy to watch. Especially enjoyed all the scenery including that nice painted backdrop. I'm a little jealous that you can run those 10-car trains. On my much smaller logging layout that uses switchbacks the switchback tail tracks can only hold the loco and 3 cars, so that's my limit. But that's all the space I had. Thanks for going to the trouble to make the video and post it.

    How where the log cars moved into position to be loaded without a locomotive? Did the crane reach far enough to load all the cars without moving them? Did they use the tractor to move them? I'm interesting in learning about logging operations.

    • @arcadialogger
      @arcadialogger ปีที่แล้ว

      In most situations like this one a locomotive would move the cars into position for loading but they could also use a seperate cable drum on the donkey to pull them into position or even an additional donkey or caterpillar. Thanks for watching.

    What kits use lid loaders

    • @arcadialogger
      @arcadialogger ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you mean by "lid" loaders. The log "A" frame loaders at McKenny's landing are scratch built with SS Ltd. boilers and drums but the small Dolbeer donkey is a Tomar kit. The loader at Cat Landing is a KMP Donkey kit but fitted with a diesel engine and drums I fabricated from parts in my junk box. All of the rigging and spar trees are scratch built with Rio Grand Models castings and Spider Wire fishing line as the cabling.

    I've never been to Arcadia, but lived in Michigan for 60 years. When I worked construction I was all over the state. You seam to have a lot of bedrock in your layout. That seams odd since Michigan is all sand that I've seen. Michigan sits on a bowl shaped limestone foundation carved out and filled with deposits by glaciers. You have an excellent layout, but I find it odd you choose to model so much bedrock. Is there a particular reason you choose to do so?
