My understanding is that there were bishops of Rome but there were no popes, per se, to be there or not be there. Not till gregory the great did the roman church claim primacy and even after that, it was 1200 or so before one could actually recognize Rome as the central and catholic church center.(small letter c) Thus becoming the Catholic Church even if Gregory did claim it earlier.

Christians: have open line of communication directly with God. Pastors preach the word of God and do not claim to be divine. Only God can judge/forgive us of sins. Catholics: have open line of communication with God, but also have leadership structure/middlemen that claim divinity (Pope, Bishops, Priests, Brothers, Sisters, etc) and can judge/forgive you of sins. Christians: when you die you go to Heaven or hell. Catholics: when you die you can go Heaven, hell or purgatory (in between Heaven and hell). People can pray or pay money to get loved ones out of purgatory faster. Christians: Communion is for symbolic remembrance of the sacrifice Jesus made for us. Catholics: Transubstantiation occurs which is where bread and wine is magically transformed into Jesus's body and blood during Communion.
