Refinishing a metal patio side table
How I refinished a patio table
Yikes! I almost forgot the final piece in the commission work I received. Thankfully, the folks who commissioned me were very understanding that it was incredibly hot, and they didn’t mind waiting to get it back. This little table was once again not a very scientific trial, but I did get to test if using a strong blast from the hose and a metal scraper brush was as good as anything else. The honest answer is inconclusive. If I had used a real pressure washer, I think it would have worked extremely well. As good as a professional sandblaster??? Not sure but I think it was better than the first three attempts of the strippers I used. (Not better than the fourth.) It was also easier to clean and although not perfect for the environment I think it wasn’t too bad. The paint chips dropped to the patio and the water ran off to the lawn. Once the patio dried, I swept up the paint.

Upcycle Magnets with Clay, AIR DRY or POLYMER?!?
มุมมอง 73หลายเดือนก่อน
Air dry clay or “oven cooked” polymer clay, which one’s better? To be honest, they both have their points for being better than the other, but mainly it depends on the project you’re about to do, how you would like to finish them and your time. In my opinion: air dry clay is easy to work with in that it doesn’t require a lot of strength to flatten it or roll it out. However, it cracks easily bu...
Patio bench MAKEOVER using strippers!
มุมมอง 91หลายเดือนก่อน
This paint chipped patio bench was supposed to be easy! Arrg, far from it. I will say it gave me a new appreciation for chemical strippers. However, as much as I like my low odor paint strippers the idea of reapplying multiple times and having to re-wrap them in plastic so the stripper wouldn’t dry out seemed a bit much. It occurred to me that perhaps applying the low odor one on once and leavi...

This #patiofurniturechallenge was supposed to be fun! While I'm looking forward to seeing what my fellow TH-camrs do with it, my entry was anything but fun. Refinishing an old Orange Table! (pt 2) the base and chairs
มุมมอง 1393 หลายเดือนก่อน
Been putting off redoing this table and chairs I got from my dad of years...why I couldn't wait five more months until it was cool again I don't know! Aside from that climate timing tip, my only other big recommendation from this is the importance of a sander with minimal vibrations. As we already had a few tools from Ryobi we had plenty of batteries and chargers making the choice for my new co...
Multiple fails at removing a tabletop finish! Scrapper, Strippers, Sander and Heat gun!
มุมมอง 1354 หลายเดือนก่อน
Not sure what type of poly coating was used on this as it dings easily but won’t come off! This is my first time trying a carbide scrapper and it helped the process but certainly didn’t seem worth the effort. That is until I tried 2 different chemical strippers unsuccessfully, a heat gun made the process dangerous, and finally my trusty orbital sander that required a lot longer time than usual ...

Easy way to REMOVE PAINT from METAL with Baking Soda and WITHOUT BOILING!
Beautiful job Margie. I am sure the customer is over the moon with all rhe pieces. The only other thing I can think of to do in getting extremely heavy loaded up paint and rust, is take it for a chemical acid dip. It probably costs a bit, but you sanity and knuckles are well worth it. Question, are you buying another water blaster?
@@diysbydar I don’t work with metal often enough to warrant it 🤔
Seal it with wax free shellac,. Adding a second coat of stain will only activate the first coat of stain. Shellac then wait 20 minutes, varnish.
It doesn't have to be an alcoholic drink! This is why God invented coasters.

Excellent info and a file clip title! Thank you
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you!

Very cute piece!
@@OwlingDogDesign thank you! It was so manageable I should have started with it 😉
Well researched and thoughtful. Other reviewers just slap it on willy-nilly. Critical to know that it only works for laquer or shellac when applied directly, and that any polyurethane-finished piece would still have to be sanded.
Thanks
is there a shade you can use for anything? at 20 to 30 a pop I would hate to spend hundreds vs use only a middle do all shade.
@@Jack-Surreal_Panes it’s been my experience that it is pretty forgiving. Only caution would be to not use a darker tone on a light piece. Mid ranges are very reliant on the stain already on your piece. If you got the lightest tint for a really dark piece it might not be as successful. Short version: if you have a wide range of pieces to work on get the lightest tint and a mid tint.
@@AskingSpot wondering if there is an app that you can use that analyzes the stain color that is reliable?
These are all so fabulous!!
@@diysbydar thank you!!
You are fabulous!
@@OwlingDogDesign thank you! Just really love his work 🤭
Thank you but horrible music.
@@MM-vu6gw sorry about the music but really wanted to convey how frustrating this task can be. Still worth doing though!
Good idea, but why not just lay the entire piece down in a pan at one time? That way all surfaces are touched at one time! 😂
You are correct! I was just wondering with what I had 😊
Used it on a 1923 mahogany Victor vv215 record player cabinet. The cabinet was in near perfect condition, just needed a couple minor nicks covered and to bring back some pop to the finish, worked great.
Wow that sounds like a fantastic piece!
Thank you
You're welcome
Wow! What a fantastic job you did on that! I love impressionism! 😊😂😮
@@stephanieb2557 me too! Thank you 😊I have become a super fan of Van Gogh the more I looked into how many artists he inspired 🖼️
We refinished the table top on a 1920's dining room table and used a polyurethane spray for the finish. Now several years later, there are small patches of film on top that need to be removed. I did the q-tip test, and it passed the test so restore-a-finish could be used. But removing the film buildup is my dilemma - any suggestions? Thanks for your time!
Whoa this is a tricky one. I really can’t say for sure not being able to see it. If you used a poly there shouldn’t be anything on your cotton/alcohol test which would mean Restore A Finish wouldn’t work. But you said you did get something so that makes me wonder…could a wax have been placed on top? That film could come off with mineral spirits perhaps?! (Test in an inconspicuous spot first) Here’s the thing, if I’m understanding this correctly, removing the wax would still leave the poly and that couldn’t be repaired with RAF…but just removing the wax buildup might be all you need. Sorry, I’m not much help. You might try your local hardware store to see if someone there would be able to answer your questions better.
Thanks for your input. I'll check with our local Woodcrafters store.
Oh how cool! Did you stitch this?
Just drew the pattern and used embroidery thread 🙂
That IS mini... and beautiful❤
@@statementdesigns thank you! As you are such an artist that is high praise😁

@@thekraftycreech they’re relaxing to do, too!
Hmmm. I sprayed 6 percent vinegar and salt onto brass candle sticks and left for 24 hrs. They turned green. Which i like. But i want to turn solid green .
@@prettylagoon wonder if you could paint it on?
@AskingSpot I suppose but it won't have that magical aged look
Oh how cute! Clay is a craft I don't explore as often as I probably should. It always looks so fun! I love how much blending you could do on the air dry clay with watercolors. And you know how I feel about upcycling. Great project, Margie!
Thanks so much 😊 I know you would rock it!
Oh yeah!, love anything to do with clay. Loved watching you, it looks like you really enjoyed making these. What you can do with the kids, is put round holes in the pieces and make pendants, or bracelets with leather cord and beads. I have been wanting to do a side by side using DAS vs. Real earthenware clay in making a pressed impression clock. Super vid Margie!
@@diysbydar Thank you! Ooo like your ideas, can’t wait to see the earthenware vs. DAS comparison😁
Just got done two small windows and cursed the whole time. I have to redo it.
So sorry you have to redo it. I’ve done this to multiple windows and in 3 different homes and I have had to redo as well.
@@AskingSpot no worries. Your video helped me.
Did you consider a pressure washer to get the loose paint off?
I used the highest pressure setting on our hose and it was helpful for loose bits. At one point a neighbor was getting their driveway professionally pressure washed and I thought about approaching them but wasn't sure if that would be a business issue. Kicking myself for giving away our pressure washer!
Thanks!!
Such a cute idea!
@@OwlingDogDesign thanks,it was fun to do too!
Not only did I learn a lot from this video (thank you!), but also I love your voice. It's very warm and soothing.
That’s the nicest compliment, thank you!
Thanks! I tried it on a wooden chair and it did nothing. Next step, stain. 😢
@@ytsux9259 Thanks for watching. Good luck, chairs are tedious at best, hope it doesn’t have too main spindles.
Thanks for the great video. Lamp shades are so expensive and boring! You gave me a great idea!
You are so welcome! It’s been a few years since I did that and I am still happy with the results. Good luck with yours
So pretty!! I love it & it looks so much more special in copper 🥰
@@OwlingDogDesign thank you! Wasn’t sure if my own love of copper was skewing my opinion of it but I think it really works😊
Oh my, i saw a similar set in a antique shop, vintage & pricey. It had a finish on it like your dealing with. You restored that bench Margie, job well done!
Thanks! Now that I know what it takes (gobs and gobs of paint stripper) I might take it on again if the weather is not too brutal!
What would you say is the closest color to brass? I’m looking at all the different color golds they offer and can’t decide!
I can’t be certain because I can’t see the piece you’re trying to match it too. If it’s a dark brass or really shiny brass. I will say I picked antique gold because I wanted it to look like brass for the piece I was working on and that’s what I used in that video if that helps at all.
Good Vid. I haven't done it yet . . . a bit concerned that it's going to dry and chip off a year or two after application. Do you know how long it might last?
The first home I did it to (several windows) we moved after 5 years and it was fine then. (Did another home but it got crushed by a tree from a tornado so can’t say there.) The next home I used it on was a friend’s and theirs is still fine after 3 years (it’s on their sliding patio door that they use often too.) This video was made 2 years ago and we are still happy. It is on all our front windows that get a lot of sun. Embarrassingly I have not cleaned the windows on the inside of the house in that time. (For the record I have cleaned the outside. 🤭)
@@AskingSpot Many thanks for your help, I'm going to give it a try. The kitchen was redone 3 years ago; we had new hardwood which is now fading near the windows because of the UV light. Hopefully this film will help!
Wow!
Great tune.
I pray everyone affected will recover in Jesus Name Amen🫂❤️.
Thank you sharing this info. I just bought the film and would have totally ruined the first roll !
Glad to be of help and good luck!
I’m curious. Why didn’t you use sand in the sandblaster? I thought that’s what you’re supposed to use in the sandblaster.
@@TheShizNat weirdly in the instructions it says do NOT use sand. As we have sand in our backyard that would have been handy. Not sure why they didn’t want sand used.
That was helpful. Thanks for posting.
I saw a set just like this at my local thrift store and thought it would be good for the challenge - and while I was thinking about it, someone purchased it! Ugh and after seeing what you did - I'm disappointed because they came out great. Did you ever consider taking the furniture to the car wash and pressure washing?
That is a brilliant idea! I’m not completely done with the loveseat so I will be googling where the nearest self serve car wash is, thanks!
I can't imagine the frustration! Congrats for hanging in there!!!
